I've been using Ubuntu for a while now, it's been great, but I think I want to de-bloat a little bit.

I'm not a very advanced user, slowly learning though. I've been on it for about a year now. I'm looking moving to Debian, is that a good next step?

Also, does anyone here know anything about Grub? When I boot it gives me options to boot into Ubuntu, Ubutnu with advanced options, or Windows (I need windows for work). How will installing debian mess with grub? Will the system automatically get rid of the option to boot into ubuntu?
>>

So, I've been using openSUSE for a while and it was enjoyable, I've seen the light of freedom and will stay the course (albeit I sin by using nonfree GPU drivers, but having an AMD card is painful otherwise)

I use Debian on my desktop since I wanted something without too many frills, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around apt-get and aptitude

Compared to
zypper in foo

which shows me the package I'm about to install in a clear manner
apt-get install foo

or
aptitude install foo

is both harder to parse, as well as way more verbose, which adds up a lot with se, up, lu etc. being really nice abbreviations
I know I can just alias it, and I probably will, I just need to know if I'm missing something

Additionally, I only now realized, after installing way more packages than I probably should have, that apt doesn't install suggested packages by default, but I can't figure out how to install all suggested packages for already installed packages other than going through them one at a time
I've tried
aptitude/apt update/upgrade/dist-upgrade --install-suggests
but shit don't work

I'm obviously retarded when it comes to these things, since I'm not actually at all doing anything related to computers in my "real" work, and have no prerequisite knowledge, so I'd truly appreciate some help

Also wondering if there'd be any problem with my using rsync to sync my laptop's and desktop's document/.config/.emacs.d folders. I'm using KDE on both if that matters (I'll probably switch to i3 or ratpoison or something soon, I'm not really using any of the DE stuff other than calendar etc. and I can just use conky for that, right?)

TL;DR: I need suggested packages through apt/aptitude, pls help

probably not, grub should be smart enough to see both Ubuntu and Windows when you reinstall it. So youll be presented with three options, Windows, Ubuntu, Debian. Youll need to be careful if you install Windows over Linux, as the Windows bootloader will wipe out entries for Linux.

On a desktop system? Probably no longer necessary.

On a server, it's important for the stability of your applications to have some spillover so that you have time to respond to scaling needs. Increased application latency is preferable to a denial of service.

apt and apt-get are referred to as different things? I thought they were interchangeable, my mistake
Regardless, I did
apt-get --install-suggests -update/upgrade/upgrade-dist
which didn't work either so

I'll install synaptic and try it out, though I'm adverse to GUIs, but I can always just set --install-suggests for apt-get in the future, but pray tell, what does aptitude use instead? I see the -r flag for recommends, but nothing for suggests, other than mentioning that aptitude why foo will show dependencies, recommends and suggests for foo

hi guys, getting the hang of this I think but I still need some help and really feel like I should know this answer by now.

Anyway, I am running slackware and I got the thing to use my tethered connection despite the applets and junk not showing a positive connection buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I'm wondering if there's a possibility that this will function this way with my wireless card. A netgear wna3100 (Prorietary trigger!). Yes, I've read everywhere, throroughly, and know that I will need ndiswrapper, but I have no idea where to look to find anything on this thing. I have heard of slackpkg and swaret but I'm still not sure how to install those.

git, right.

it's git, right? like I'm an idiot now right?

But
>>
>>58539371
I fixed it! qvm-copy-to-vm fedora-23 <filepath> then I ran the auto.sh for the driver
>>
>>58539724
btw, installing slack helped me solidify a big part of my experience with linux. I still have to learn how to install xorg-server from the command line, so I can get an idea of how the process is being cut and maybe get a backdrop. I still need to learn how to customize the css of the deals running the os media. And I am still terrible with general networking but at least I've managed to get this and a few other distros going without a full blown gui.

Have yet to get this card running out of ubuntu. I also still can't get any of these things to write to my sandisk cruzer. I think I have to change the filesystem to fat32 but does that do enough in the bypass of the first flashed partition?
>>
Just to double check:

My partition scheme is as follows
>sda1, boot partition, 1GB, ext4
>sda2, swap partition, 4GB, swap
>sda3, root partition, 20GB, ext4
>sda4, home partition, rest of disk space, ext4

What order and to which mounting point do I want to mount these partitions during the first steps of an arch installation?

This is what I think I'm supposed to do, please tell me if I'm being retarded...

root@archiso ~ # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
root@archiso ~ # mkdir /mnt/boot
root@archiso ~ # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
root@archiso ~ # mkdir /mnt/home
root@archiso ~ # mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/home
root@archiso ~ # mkswap /dev/sda2
root@archiso ~ # swapon /dev/sda2

later once I've generated my fstab, I should then add the entry

>UUID=<UUID> none swap defaults 0 0

where <UUID> is my swap partition's UUID, correct?

don't forget it needs to go in UEFI and that you need to set the GUUID not to be confused with the volume ID. Single pass on the dd. After that I don't think you raelly need to concern yourself with having a large home partition. You don't want to be reading high volume high frequency files on an ssd, things like large videos being during editing sequences really wear down on the ssd. How many times will you be on your linux to watch a movie, you know?

my home is 50gib but I also made a /dev_home where I keep my code stuff and an /etc_home where I keep the sound, image, video and general value information and files.

I have three primaries, slackware, arch. parabola or pixel, an extended with 10gigs for a /usr each ( opting to customize the path for a program or something to use them as storage if it's too much ). And then the 3 50GiB partitions. I think the parimaries have like 40 GiBs each to hold desktop and build configurations.

From now on I'll just be adding new drives into fstab and slowly building an arsenal of usbdistros to go with every build and desktop so I can hand em to my son and have him pass them around to his friends and cousins. Maybe that'll get things moving.

I could start one of those patreon revolutions and dream in code. This kind of thing would be real cheap too using a Linux machine. I could have 100 distros out in 32Gig drives for like...$600?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>58546417
What does that have to do with anything? The old ones are very likely to have a lot of quirks caused by their history with X11 that will carry over into Wayland. I'd prefer something new coded with Wayland in mind.

Also, for the record that image doesn't mean anything either when basically everyone _agrees_ that all the competing standards are shit. That image only applies when there are many options that are already good enough yet someone wants to start a new one hoping to just unify everyone.
Totally different situations.

Looking in my .Xresources file, if I have

If I have
XTerm*faceName: ProggyCleanTTSZ:pixelsize=16

instead, then the line drawing characters are rendered but I have this issue instead when rendering colored blocks.
What the hell, is it possible to get the line drawing characters AND avoid this color nonsense? This font configuration stuff is really frustrating.

I just want something that werks and composites out of the box.

stop using xterm in favor of urxvt now
>>
>>58546956
But then I don't get my scanlines!
>>
>>58546952
What the hell is so great about unity? As far as I can tell the only benefit over the standard desktop paradigm it gives you is you quickly type out what you want in the search bar to access it instead of fumbling through menus.

But that's nothing special, for example pretty much everyone using i3 uses dmenu or equivalent, which basically does the same thing without all the bloat.
>>
>>58546679
Not the distro, the new fontconfig did that.
>>
>>58546952
Because Canonical are filthy jews who don't contribute anything upstream and make it very hard for others to use their stuff. They heavily patch packages for Ubuntu and it's very hard to port Unity to other distros

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

What are you talking about? It's /flt/, it has always been that.

Anyone knows anything like SAMBA but over internet, so i can access folders outside my localhost?

I have tried sshfs with some success, but it cant replace samba.

I know that Samba can be run over the internet but not encrypted.

Have been trying to google this but no real good alternatives, except using like an VPN and just continue using samba.

Got some strange issues with using alsa/pulseaudio on Archlinux.

Everything was running fine until today where I decided to install pulseaudio to automatically set my USB Headset as default device when pluggin it in.

I did this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Troubleshooting#Automatically_switch_to_Bluetooth_or_USB_headset

Got a strange issue since then.

When using a music player like:
-quodlibet
-amarok

and selecting a song, the application gets muted. After unmuting the song the music plays just fine until I select another song, then it gets muted again.

Here is some info about my system if it helps:
System: Host: tomo Kernel: 4.8.13-1-ARCH x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 Distro: Arch Linux
Audio: Card-1 Intel 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-2 Hewlett-Packard driver: USB Audio
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.8.13-1-ARCH

Alright, so I bought an SSD for my thinkpad, I moved the hard drive to the ultra bay slot and put my new SSD to where my hard drive was. Now when I boot I get pic related. What do I need to do now so that I can boot from my hard drive and have Linux recognise my new SSD?
>>
>>58547466
You need to change the boot command. It tries to boot from sda which is now the SSD while your HDD is sdb
>>
>>58547530
Btw this is why you should use UUID/PARTUUIDs instead of sda/sdb etc

This. Any reason why I shouldn't use labels on the fstab?

A year or so ago when I used Arch, mpd would pause or go forward a track if I had certain images displayed in sxiv (and some other things I can't remember). I changed mpd's port from 6600 to 6601 and it stopped happening.

I was using snd_hda_intel, nothing else.

So I just saw that my boot is 15s and then it takes ~20s for GDM/GNOME 3 to set up and take me to the login screen, so I'm naturally thinking about ditching GNOME, what would you recommend that demands little configuration needed but is faster and more lightweight?

What would be wrong with Debian anyway, it's about as far from resource-intensive as you can get without being completely bare-bones.
