I have an Acer 5744 laptop with shit 15.6" 1366x768 LED LCD screen.
I've been looking to upgrade it, and found some generic 15.6 WUXGA 1920x1080 screens that appear to have the same connector in the same general location as the Acer.
See pic related. Left is my LCD screen, right is the closest one I could find. The connector is the same 40 pin, but its not in the exact same location. I dont know if it closer, or farther from the source. I might need a new ribbon cable, and I'm sure those are all proprietary.

I cant find any info if these models ever came with an upgraded display

I have not tested the VGA output resolution, but with an HDMI dongle I have no issues outputting 1080p to my TV.

Will that screen work on this laptop?

Try loading a game from a different hard disk if you have one available. If you can't get it to reproduce the crash then it's your hard disk, if it still crashes it's probably some firmware issue (update drivers etc.) rather than a hardware issue.
I would expect to see blue screens and boot issues with a hardware problem.

Yes, this is called coil whine, and its not your RAM, its either caps, or coils.

You can apply a special paste over the coils to reduce their noise. I have no idea what the stuff is called, someone else here can chime in.

make sure you dont have blown caps

It really does sound like it's coming from the RAM, but everything I've found says it's either PSU or HDD and I only have an SSD in at the moment.
Assuming it's the PSU, is this a worry? It's a brand new EVGA 550W G2 that brags about 100% Japanese capacitors and a 7 year warranty.

RAM doesnt have any components on it that can whine.

There are a bunch of capacitors, and coils around your RAM slots that will make this noise.

Get a mechanics stethoscope, or use a metal rod with a non-conductive tip, put it to your ear and find the exact spot where the noise is coming from

When I built my PC I used all Gigabyte, and Corsair parts.

I started with a GTX 470 from Gigabyte that burned out after a few years, they replaced it with a GTX480 that also went bad. I had it replaced under warranty, sold it, and bought a reference 480 for the same amount.

No issue with their mobo, and I've always used Gigabyte for my PC build.

I no longer go anything but reference when it comes to video cards, they are generally better, and easier to upgrade heatsinks because the VRAM layout hasnt been fucked with

480 wont ever get frame rates anywhere near that
I run GTX 480 in SLI, and the best I can do is around 75.

I would honestly wait until a 4k monitor comes out that can do 144Hz with no compromise, and then build yourself a new PC.

I finished putting together a new computer and I am trying to install Windows 7 onto it. The hard drive is brand new and detected.

The error I am getting says that it is missing a required CD/DVD drive device driver and will not install Windows 7 unless it's installed. I am running the installation from a USB drive. I tried putting in the motherboard disc, but it didn't bring up anything. Then I tried multiple solutions I googled online such as using only the USB 2.0 port, switching multiple USB ports, and trying to install the drivers downloaded online and placed on a USB, but nothing is working.

Why can't I get it to work? It's very frustrating to deal with something like this on a new computer.

windowsfags, you know how the bar turns from blue to red when a storage device doesn't have enough memory?

>>58464629
You're fine. Red just indicates that the drive is running low on space, not necessarily that it's completely out.
>>
>>58464752
I should add that you can safely pack the drive until it's full, and windows will inform you when there's no more room.
>>
>>58464752
i'm not talking about running out of space
i'm talking about the amount of free space you're supposed to leave on a storage device for it to function properly
which is what i'm assuming the red bar indicates, and i'm just curious as to how they decide when to turn red, is it like a certain percentage of space?
and more importantly, how accurate is it
>>

Which one is better? Or it the same but with different fans?
>>
>>58464815
That's really only relevant for a system drive, and only to a certain extent. For pure storage drives, no harm or effect on performance will come from low space. The bar turning red is just an advisory thing, to warn you that your space is running low and you -may- want to do something about it at some point. But even on a system drive, the bar turning red doesn't mean your system's going to stop functioning properly.

When i watch movies on my laptop (connected via hdmi to a samsung lcd tv) i notice that when camara moves side to side you get something like screen tearing, but its not (i don't know how to describe it in a different way). Would a higher refresh rate on my monitors (tv's) fix that or is it because it's filmed with 25 frames per second?
>>
>>58465507
because people who develop those games develop only for windows
>>
>>58465517
But why would they do that if Linux is supposedly so much better?
>>
>>58465475
#2 because of two reasons:

1. air is more susceptible to heat loss, so the air cools down, and because the water exposed to the air in the bottle has a higher surface area than #1, it freezes_slightly_ faster

2. colder air is heavier, so it'll sit at the lowest point in any chamber; since the whole bottle in #2 sits lower in the freezer than #1 (in which only the bottom sits lower) #2 will freeze a little bit faster

This is all theory though, in practice in a home environment you'll most likely never notice the difference.
>>
>>58465524
because there isn't much people using linux so it isn't economical to rewrite a game so only a few hundred people can buy it. And people don't use linux because they are retarded or they just can't
>>
>>58465540
But surely if it were better more people would use it wouldn't they? It doesn't make any sense that the vast majority of users would knowingly choose an inferior option.

>>
>>58465575

>>
>>58465546
The majority isn't always right. You have to realize that at some point.

Would you let the majority make decisions for you? Say, any decision in your life, you have people vote on them. Following your logic, the majority would surely pick the best alternative/course of action, right? That's not realistic.

People are dumb. People are selfish. People are lazy. And most of all, for the sake of being "one of them", people will do as the person next to them. Herd mentality is part of being human, and it is a way to maintain ourselves in a social group. Since everyone's using Windows, to go out of the group's way and use something else is defying your nature and you'd need a reason to do so.

>>58465569

>>
>>58465582
>People are dumb. People are selfish. People are lazy.
I don't believe that. Some people are dumb, selfish, and lazy, but I think that the average person is at least as intelligent and well-intentioned as I am. Just because our opinions might differ sometimes does not make the rest of people stupid. It is only narcissism to think you are the only one who can see the truth among a herd of thoughtless sheep.

>>

thats true... but it's just killing us slowly... no difference
>>
>>58465599
Well it's not like there's no happy medium in between. People are slowly transitioning into other fuel sources, but it's a slow process. We can't just tear down all the coal plants and put up thousands of new nuclear ones overnight, it would be a disaster.

I never claimed to be some sort of enlightened being, or that GNU/Linux users and whatnot are such.

The average person is well intentioned, I'll agree with that, but go back to "would you let the majority choose this for you?", and think about how most people see their own interests as more important than yours.

I'm not saying that's bad, I'm a moral nihilist. This is just to prove a point.

>Some people are dumb, selfish and lazy.
Selfishness is natural. So is laziness. Now think about the state of education worldwide and you'll see that even if well-intentioned, people can make mistakes. Misunderstandings are a thing. The majority just isn't reliable.

Some questions regarding internal HDDs and HDD enclosures

1. Does all internal HDD require external power supply when plugged to enclosure?
Or only 2.5" doesn't need to?

2. All laptops uses 2.5" HDD right?
The only difference is height?

3. Would getting HDD enclosure for internal HDDs better than bettering external HDDs? Price and durability wise I mean?

Finally do you recommend this?

For something to be popular it needs to be good enough, not good. If you can change it (depends on the driver, you can do it easily in Linux but I'm assuming you're a winfag), you'll be able to do it here:
http://www.wikihow.com/Change-a-Computer%27s-Mac-Address-in-Windows

Just change the last digit to something else, that way it won't change the manufacturer or model details.

Reinstall your PC if you believe that some faggot has hacked you and is fucking with you by messing up your router settings. Otherwise just log into your router on your phone and remove your PC from the blacklist, or if it's not in there find the reset button/pin and factory reset your router. Make sure you have your ISP username/password to hand if you hard reset your router or you might have to call your ISP to get back online.

On a non-flash disk, if you do that then you'll fragment new files to fuck and there will be an IOPS massacre when reading from or writing to those files.

>>58464815
It's a heuristic (guess) rather than a fixed limit. It represents how NTFS filesystems and tools perform under low-space conditions. Like if you try to allocate a large file but only have tiny gaps between files to store it in, then the file will be fragmented and your disk will need to do many more reads to pull it back off the disk. Best performance on an HDD is to read sequentially, so there's a de-fragmenter that moves the files about. But the defragger needs space in which to work, and is slow/ineffective if there's not enough space or its too heavily fragmented.

As the other anon said, if a system disk fills up you risk not being able to write to critical OS files, which might leave your machine in a bad way. On your user profile disk, you could end up fucking programs up for your user if you run out of space when writing their settings to your home dir.

1. Some 2.5" disks are hungry. Some USB ports can't provide enough power. You can get a double-ended USB cable for those ones, it attaches to two USB ports and pulls power from both. All 3.5" external caddies need external power supply.

2. All recent ones yeah. And no, the disk size is smaller in all dimensions. pic related

3. If you want durability/speed you can get better disks and put them in an external enclosure. If you want the best price then buy 3.5" external enclosures with disks inside, even if you don't want the enclosures. For some reason (probably bulk buying reasons) it's cheaper to get a random 3.5" disk in an enclosure than it is to buy the disk itself.

Please respond

The only surefire way to remove all trace of images is to first delete the files and anything referring to them from the filesystem, then secondly to write over the space so that they can't be undeleted.

On Windows you've got cached thumbnails, links in your history and god-knows what else. Your best option is to clean reinstall Windows and then fill up the disk with big files, or use a program that does that. On Linux just delete the files, clear your thumbnail cache and then run BleachBit.

Try not being such a fucking filthy pedo in future.

>>
>>58466211
time to defragment is a function of the number of fragmented file blocks, and the free, unfragmented space in which is has to work. It'll need several times the space of the largest fragmented file in order to work efficiently. The closer you get to full and the longer you stay there, the more fragmented it will get.
>>
>>58466243
Yeah that's the one I have. One of them is a dud and will only provide power, the other does power and data. Not sure about power requirements but I know that an SSD uses less power than a mechanical disk, so I assume that some 2.5" HDDs are more efficient than others. My old Gigabyte laptop's USB ports couldn't power an external HDD without the splitter, my current one can, my old Dell XPS could. I haven't actually measured the power drain or looked at the specs though. If the port is underpowered it'll just make a clicking noise as it fails to spin up.

GTX 970 has recently started making this "grinding" style noise. I isolated it and it's the left fan of the GPU. It was extremely loud earlier, but ~5-6 hours later it's quieted down (Likely due to my fans themselves being very low speed idle). I got the card in December of 2014, so it's only very slightly out of warranty.

Should I contact MSI about an RMA (3 week turnaround I'm assuming) or just fix them myself? I found the fans for ~$30 online, but I've never dabbled in replacing a GPU fan but can't imagine it'd be super difficult.

GPU would be something around a 1060/used 970/RX470 etc. Shopping used comes with risk but can net you cheap things. Go all the way down to a like, 960 or 280X for cheaper but still decent.
Stock cooler should do, Hyper 212 EVO otherwise.
MOBO is based on your needs, same for case. PSU is mostly whatever but around $40-50
RAM is just whatever high-speed 8GB, though consider 16GB if you do heavy art/editing.

This is closer to $600 than anything (Possibly like $650). Downgrade the GPU a bit if need be and stick to 8GB. You're mainly after a good CPU with those needs in mind.

I checked all dates in this"choose details" window. Looks like it won't work. I was just curious in what order i downloaded my music albums, how my music taste progressed. So it is nothing important. I wonder where older dates come from. bottom folder shows files i ripped from archive that came with videogame i installed from CD disk. I guess date was created by game dev team or when "original copy" was created for disc factory.

It's also the browser developed by the guys who invented the first firefox. They're still part of mozilla, get a very small amount of money, but almost all of their work is being used in FF.

There where tons of safety issues with FF which have been resolved by the SeaMonkey team also some of the features SeaMonkey has had for eternity get ported over to FF.

It's arguably just a better version of FF which sadly doesn't get updated enough.

>>
>>58467621
If you're on windows you can assign the drive letter/path yourself.

Press windows key -> Type in "Disk" > Chose diskmanagement (or something like that, I'm on german windows idk the english name).
This will open a new window where you can see your drive (identified by the name)

Right click the name of the volume you want to change and simply chose Change driveletter and paths.

A new window will open where you can assign each partiion of the volume a drive letter you want.

A media disk I have is R:, if I unplug this and plug in another disk, will it have the R: label?
Or, if I unplug R: and plug it into a new port on the motherboard, will it retain R:?

>>58467668
Xubuntu has a date/time panel item called Clock.
If you right click a panel and in the context menu go to panel > add new item > type "Clock" in the search bar and chose the first item (simply called clock)

Right click the clock item and go to properties to change the layout etc.
>>
If you set it to R manually and plug it into another port it'll be set to R again if it's available.
Windows remembers the manually set drive letters and the device ID.
The information is not stored on the device though, so plugging it into a different computer will not make it be set to R.

There are certain anti virus scanners that can boot into a malware scanner, avg is one of them.
ESET Nod32 can do it too afaik.

Can't tell you if they're good tho, I used both on different occasions, on different machines with different contaminations and they have never solved the problem.
>>
>>58468086
I need to copy files from external HDD, that's most likely to be infected with malware for windows, to another machine.
I know I can boot any distro to copy those files, then nuke the HDD.
But what if the malware is with those files?
Will it infect the machine on it on, or do I need to be idiot and run it myself?
>>
What's the difference between an M.2 SSD and a SATA SSD? Just speed?
>>
I teach some programming and every year I get a couple of students who will spend an hour or two writing hundreds of lines of (very buggy) code without thinking twice or testing once. Then they try to run it, which ends in a much longer effort to untangle and debug the mess they have wrought.

Various students have different problems and I can assist them with most, help them understand various concepts etc.

But these people I just don't understand and I find it very hard to help them. Why do my comments that it's better to go bit by bit testing along the way not reach them? Those people do it repeatedly even after getting the same spiel from me over and over. Most of them are not even dumb people.

Did anyone on here ever go through such a phase? Can you explain me what went down in your heads?
>>
>>58468133
If the files are infected it will definitely infect the machine.
Common BUSINESS practice is when a machine is infected to nuke the whole system from orbit.

You can never be 100% certain that the files are not infested even if you scan them with anti virus software.

>>58468284
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2607731/whats-difference-ssd-ssd.html
Short answer: M.2 is faster but the performance / price ratio isn't worth it for most (check link for further details)

>>58468328
Maybe they're not interested in programming?
I had people like that during my IT training and they never learned it, no matter how well you explained it to them. I call those people learning resistant.

They simply did what they always did, you helped them solve the problem and they immediately forget about it.

A docking station has no direct influence on battery life.

Some of the things that affect battery life are:
- Usage
- Load cycles
- Time
- Depending on what sort of battery you have: Temperature

A docking station can be good for your battery because when you put the machine in the docking station the battery will rest and won't be used, thus won't discharge or have any battery running trough it (you can achieve the same by plugging in the power cord into your laptop and taking out the battery).

Only way to improve battery life is to, sadly, buy a new battery.
If you want your battery to last as long as possible ONLY CHARGE when the battery% is between 20-80 and to do full charge cycles, don't interrupt them.
>>
How do I set up for sharing data between a window 7 machine and a Windows 98 machine using a crossover cable?
>>
>>58468447
They weren't really learning resistant in general and some of them were very intelligent.

It's just that their default approach to a problem was to soldier on, write the entire thing in one go as if they were sure it will work, then debug the entire mess at once.
>>
>>58468487
does this mean that the docking station has it's own battery built in that drains instead of my laptop's battery? I'd still consider that to be a win. I know that the docking station needs it's own charger so that would make sense.

In that case AVG will probably do the trick.
When formatting your HDD use a program that lets you format it with something called zero filling formatting, that way you make sure to format the ENTIRE HDD, not just the used space.

Is that a IT specific class? Maybe they're not that into programming or something.

>>58468559
The docking station itself has no battery, it requires it's own power cord because if the docking station would draw the power from a single port on your laptop it could fry your mainboard (a dockign station has like.. 5-6 outputs? if all of those draw power from something like a USB port you'll have a bad time)

While your laptop is in the docking station tho it won't draw power from your battery.

What should my fan set up be with this?

Are the stock fans okay? I got the extra fan in case I needed to switch things around.

I'm thinking having the 1 fan on the left as exhaust and 2 fans on the right as intake.

Would that best be placed on the right alongside the fan that's already there, or on the bottom of the case?

You can stream over your GPU tho depending on which codec you use.
The NVIDIA codec (obviously) uses your GPUs processor to stream and the NCENC (or something like that) codec uses your CPU.

If you want to get serious with streaming I recommend investing in a streaming PC and a capture card, what this does is it will capture the video from your pc you're playing with but use the resourcs from the streaming PC to actually stream them. This his obviously better for you since the second PC only uses it's resources for streaming.

Can't really answer your question tho, I don't stream that much.

>>58468655
Yes, formatting means just removing the partition table and yes, zero/random filling does the same.
Zero fills everything with just that, zeros while random filling fills the spaces with various random data patterns.

So I've watched a video on how CPUs are made.
What makes a CPU model pricier, or different than another one?
For example, what's the difference between an i5 6500 and a 6600, from the productor point of view? Isn't this the same chip with different settings? Isn't this unethical as it would technically be the exact same sillicon?
And going even further, why doesn't an i7 cost the same to produce as an i3? Is it a problem with yields or something?
Same logic applies to GPU.
