Why won't Windows 8.1 update anymore? It sits on "checking for updates" for hours, this is a brand new install.

Think I should post in /g/ too,
I've been researching for days about this shit, and I want to hear your input.
Essentially, I used to play on wired but now I cannot run a 50 foot ethernet cable upstairs to my PC/Consoles from my router for whatever reason. I've concluded that I can either go wifi or powerline. Well I have both setups, wireless (wireless-N router and some $30 USB card shit) and powerline (Netgear 1000Mbps in a >2005 house) and have been trying to see which gives the least amount of lag and jitter, but I can't get any accurate results(more worried about jitter than anything). I'm wondering if anyone here can chime on my problem, gaming wise? Which to be more reliable for gaming and downloading shit on.
If anything matters, I heavily play fighting games.
>>
Is there any other way to update to Win7SP1 if you get manifest errors other than doing a custom reinstall? I've been trying for a day now.

Any anons got advice for how to do my internet to maximise connection over the whole house? I live in a 3 floor house.

Drilling holes isn't an option, are powerline adapters my next best bet then using a router? Any advice on ones to get?
I've got 2 ASUS RT-AC51U one for downstairs and I'll put another on the second floor.

If this isn't the best way I'd appreciate any responses on how to solve my internet problem.

No ISM shared spectrum wireless communication or PLC will ever have the low latency or lack of jitter that wired networking does. Not 802.11, not infrared networking (has no official standard, that's how shit it is), not anything. Either wire your shit up or live with shitty connectivity.

>>58453643
I recommeded an access point, not a router.
You can use kismet to do spectrum analysis so you can pick IEEE 802.11 if the 5GHz spectrum isn't as noisy as it is elsewhere and IEEE 1901 if it is.

I recomended an AP, not a router. What's commonly referred to as a router isn't one, it's a combination unit that contains a router, an access point, a switch, a modem and a firewall. If your ISP gives it to you, it's called CPE, but if you buy your own there isn't really a name for it.

>>

>>58453801
Antivirus software is basically almost 90% signature detection (i.e. we have a checksum of this malware, we've detected file on your system with this checksum) and some heuristics combined with access control (for example, irfanview shouldn't be able to load device drivers).

As long as you use Common Sense™ and Windows Defender which is in Windows already, you're pretty much as safe as you're ever gonna get.

Can you use grub2 in CSM/MBR mode to boot an EFI partition? Perhaps a chainload?

I have a fagbook pro trying to triple boot Linux and windows 10 also. I want Linux and windows 10 to stay in legacy MBR coz of driver issues but I want macOS to boot from EFI and keep one united bootloader.

Some of my old game boy games are going for seriously high prices now. Should I start selling my rare video games? I haven't played them for years, they are just sitting in a plastic bin, but there are a few memories in that plastic bin.

Selling refurbished laptopts. Do i stay honest to the customers and market them as refurbished, or go with all the other scumbags and sell them as brand new, with "very last warehouse items, might show small signs of use" written in fine print at the bottom of the page?

I know some fuckers buy used shit, clean keyboards a bit and slap a "brand new" on it. When the RMA's keep piling up they just disappear and open up a new e-shop month later. On the other hand they steal most of our customers, because lol same chinktop but $30 cheaper.

Assuming this is a secondary/non-system drive? The sound you describe is just the sound of the drive powering on, and the lockup is just the system waiting for the drive to finish spinning up so it can begin doing the work. Nothing to be particularly concerned about, non-system drives get powered off during periods of inactivity as a means of extending their lifespan by only having them on when they're needed.

Editors are more simple, which may be an advantage.
Some IDE's have a bad editor, and then it is better to use a stand alone editor.
I use kdevelop myself. It is using kate as the editor, but ads a lot of functionality related to programming that is not there in kate.
Other people turn the editor into an IDE.
This gives them a bit extra control of what is going on with their editor.
Eg, kate is scripted in js, and some people does not like that, so they use vim, which is easier to bind to bash.
The most notable downside with an IDE is it integrates everything into a single window.
This is rarely a useful thing as you have less space to work with this way.

Detached windows in the IDE is probably the easiest if you want to keep the IDE.
Otherwise, just use separate windows and set up kwinrules so you don't have to move the windows around every time.

2. attach one of those electric plate coolers like in a refrigerator

What is the name of a server that provides an OS image? Would like to set one up so I don't need disks or USB drives with OS installations on them.
I know there is a server that runs the OS to a client, I don't want that. All I want it to do is provide the OS so the client can install it to itself.

Why the fuck is ublock starting to not block youtube ads.
>>
>>58460523
I'm no expert, but I imagine it has to do with how adblockers work. Since they essentially prevent certain elements in a page from loading, the page can simply use unblocked (unblockable?) functionality to check whether the elements in question exist (i.e. got loaded) or not, and if not, bitch about adblocking.

I need an explanation. Lately I've been having trouble starting up pc games and some programs.

Half of my games stop responding on startup. For some games if I leave it for 2-5 mins, they'll come alive again and work normally. Sometimes they crash in game though.

Also, When I sign into steam, it stops responding for about 2 mins and then starts to work. It isn't a Steam related problem though, because some non-Steam games do the same thing.

As I said some random programs do it too, but I can't think of any.

It might be possible, but it's risky to swap out a higher resolution screen on laptops in general, and especially risky on laptops built to such a low price point.

I would test it by plugging in an external display and cranking it up to 1080p (or as high as it will go) and using it like that for a bit. If it gets a lot hotter than normal, then I would say it's probably not a good idea to upgrade.

Screen swaps are *usually* done on laptops that offered display upgrades from the factory.
