Water Cooled edition

Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

>Assemble your parts list with price comparisons by vendor and compatibility filter.

General Tips:
>Consider substituting an i5 6500 for an i3 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build
>Consider substituting an i5 for an i7 if you are not a content creator
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any i3 or locked i5 build
>Consider a B150 mobo for any i3 build
>Always consider an SSD for your build, the difference between one and an HDD is night and day

Does anyone here

Have an H100i v2

And can tell me if it's loud
>>
>>58413316
At full blast they're extremely loud
At normal speeds they're noticable noise, but not anything horrifying. replacing your radiator fans will help with noise a lot, the pump noise is also there but it's not distracting or anything
>>
>>5841330
Shit. Get 8350 and different mobo, you will be much better off
>>
>>58413348
Will they be loud with a 6700k @ 4.7 Ghz playing intensive games?
>>
>>58413316
I have a h115i. It has a sata plug for power. If you don't use the sata it gets noisy, or so i've read. Check your power hookup.
>>
>>58413373
Probably not, as 6700ks aren't hard to cool at all
>>
>>58413393
So I wouldn't need 280mm to not have a fucky loud bullshit radiator?

About to get this 460X tempered glass meme case and it fit's the H100i pretty well, in the front looks to be a good spot

The pump noise isn't insane is all I'm saying.
The fans might be loud for you or they might not be (personally I don't even mind having a desk fan running by my PC 24/7), but if they are bad you can always change them, and that will significantly lower your noise, doesn't matter what radiator you're using they could always have better fans

I don't want to spend $30 on fans just to make my radiator acceptable in noise

If I can have the fans at 1050 RPM then they should be fine but it's hard to tell if they will be running at this speed in game

It looks like only the EK Vardar fans are decent stock

Also, Why dont you get fucked? Here you can see there is no fucking difference between stock and ultra premium noctu with Kraken

>>58413648
But we're not talking about an X61, were talking about my H100i, the radiator with unbearably loud fans (even louder than my desk fan) at full load
Sorry you want to buy an h100i and want to be assured that it's the greatest gift to mankind, but it's not
Ultimately id recommend a noctua 120mm air cooler, because not a single skylake chip on normal OCs warrants a watercooler and coming with no pump and good fans make them much quieter
>>
>>58413721
No there's just a watermark in the corner (unnoticeably tiny for me at 1440p) and you lose the ability to change your taskbar color
That's it
>>
>>58413721
No just you can change your wall paper and you have a water mark that tells you to activate windows. Just go to pirate bay and download an pre activated copy or use KMSpico to activate.
>>
>>58413730
Yeah I guess the H100i isn't ideal then even for a 6700k

The money spent on those fans can easily just be put towards the Kraken so I would do that instead. I am considering the air cooler but I don't know if I can get more than store credit, also the Noctua may not overclock as well
>>
>>58413713
More than enough for 1080p.

The left is why I wish /pcbg/ was around a year ago. Ridiculous, overpriced, heavy, large case. Shitty power supply that arrived DOA (and I lost the warranty papers of course). Shitty outdated CPU (I'm fairly certain skylake was available). The games I played at the time heavily relied on strong single thread performance. Shitty motherboard that I had to replace after 6 months. Honestly the only good things I bought were the Storage and the cpu cooler. The graphics card was ok but not amazing.

This is why I post here and give advice. Every one build I can stop from being my first go makes me feel a lot better. When you're new to building, shopping for parts is the hardest part.

Should I be concerned with m.2 SSD thermal throttling when it's mounted on the back of a motherboard with no airflow and I'm using it as an OS drive?
>>
>>58414414
That's more like it kek
If you're buying new ram for a Z170 board you might as well get faster ram, maybe more ram but that's up to you, 2400mhz is basically stock 2133mhz, if those are US dollars you can get 16Gb of 3000mhz ram for nearly $70
>>
>>58414469
well you completely blew it on the motherboard. What the fuck is that? Are liquid nitrogen cooling? No? Then don't buy that. Jesus Christ get an evga z170 ftw or something for a third that price. The blower style GPU wasn't a smart choice either but it's not going to matter much. The rest is fine for your price tier.
>>
>>58414469
I would've spent a bit more for a 1070 strix, even if you dont like the RGB it can be turned off and with a case as roomy as yours, the directcu cooler would be a bit nicer than a blower cooler
>>

The 2400mhz was the same price as the 2100mhz at the time. I already have it all installed now. Power supply was given as a birthday present. > Anon scarred me off of ATI and AMD permanently.
Are you incapable of independent thought? Have you never heard of benchmarks? Shit I knew how to look for benchmarks back when I was trying to buy crappy "gaming" laptops. There's nothing wrong with the Rx 4xx series except that the reference cards and maybe the g1 gaming from gigabyte run a little too hot for comfort. If you're paranoid about that, my MSI Rx 480 Gaming X runs about 65c in most of the stressing games I play. The XfX GTR model has a good cooler as well.
Currently for nvidia around $300 all you can buy is a used gtx 970 (can probably get for $200 if you can haggle) or a gtx 1060- 6gb.

>>58414810
>I'm going to pay $339 to look at a black slab with silver accents instead of paying $125 for any other color neutral z170 board
>>
Is a i7-6700 worth the jump from i5-6500/6600 if I actually do editing and programming stuff?
Would a gtx 970 still be okay for gaming despite the 3.5GB issue, or are the 10XX's worth it?
My current computer is potato tier so a full rebuild is in order.
>>
>>58414939
if you're gonna be doing lots of content creation and such you can't go wrong with an i7.

the 970 is still a fine card despite the whole scandal. if you're going for a 1080p/60fps build it should be more then fine.
>>
>>58414939
If you HAVE a 6500 then no jumping up to i7 isn't worth it. Depends really how much you stress the CPU. Look up the program that you use that causes the most load and look up some benchmarks I suppose? Also Kaby Lake just came out, you might want a 7700 instead of a 6700k. This is all assuming you refuse to overclock (which is fine, IMO)
Do NOT buy a brand new gtx 970. Used? Yeah if it's like $200 or less. But the gtx 1060-6gb is $249msrp and whups it's butt. Less wattage too.
>>
>>58414806
the barracuda is fine. Been running mine as a storage drive for 13 months no, no problems. Decently fast for spinning disk.
>>58414810

>>
>>58414810

>>
>>58415273
Even a 6500 will be a massive upgrade. 6700 you only get a bit of speed and hyper-threading. If your programs take full advantage of HT and/or if you like to run virtual desktops or virtual machines then maybe yeah the i7 isn't bad.
But check what the price of a 6700 and the price of a 7700 is near you before you buy. The 7700 runs at a higher clock speed without touching anything.
>>
>>58415403
Out of curiosity, where did you buy from? IIRC Newegg has "replacement only" returns on most items.

I got the NZXT Kraken off Newegg and my processor and the mobo off superbiiz which ought to be here by tomorrow. If I do wind up going with another motherboard I'm going to have to see what they're return policy is like.

I don't know anything about AMD processors but I fear you'll have to swap it for a new one. This means you'll end up buying at least graphics card, mobo and CPU, which is not really that cheap. Add DDR4 RAM, new processor cooler, SSD and new PSU on top of that and you've pretty much replaced eveything in it.

>Samsung 250GB SSD is actually only $10 more than the SK
>out of stock

Fuck my life, Sandisk is only $20 more, though so that'll be fine.

Gonna put my build list together then post it, I'm still not sure what to look for in a motherboard and I'd appreciate some suggestions, considering I'm bumping against my budget now.
>>
>>58420745
if you can find a good deal, get the rx470, otherwise should be fine

>>58420803
just get a cheapish board that fits your needs (if overclocking then get a z-series, otherwise b-series) and fits your form factor. look at the extra features and decide what you'll actually use. if you want get one that doesn't look like shit, but don't be a cuck and spend $50 more for shitty leds.
i've used the gigabyte b150m-d3h and the asus z170-a, both are good boards.
>>
>>58420585
get a new psu
>>
I'm thinking about turning my current full sized rig into a smaller form factor PC so I can take it to and from my girlfriends place, is mATX big enough for an RX480, i5 3570k and 8 GB RAM or can I go even smaller if I don't care about upgradability?
>>
So I'm buying all new shit. Is there a good reason not to go with a z170 mobo with the 7700k, since they're a lot cheaper?
>>
>>58420943
you can go itx with that iyw

>>58420964
> a lot cheaper
go ahead
>>
>>58420986

What features am I missing out on that is default for z270 though?
>>
>>58420859
Yeah I'd seen multiple builds here and on other sites vouching for the z170-a, I was just wondering if I wasn't going overboard somehow.

Also I actively do not want LEDs as much as possible. I want a PC, not a rectangular christmas tree.

I kind of want to hold off on getting an HDD on top of the SSD for more storage. Can I get away with 250GB for now and just purchase a 1TB HDD when I need the space?
>>
>>58420964
They aren't 100% compatible, Z170 mobos will require a BIOS flash which probably isn't out yet.

Why no 6700K + Z170?

Not going to happen unless you dump that into a can filled with liquid nitrogen.
From what i've read 5GHz is very unstable under normal conditions, ypu might as well go with a 6700K at 4.5-4.8GHz m8.

intel optane and a few more pcie lanes. so basically nothing. if you plan on using them then sure but you probably won't

Yeah stock would be insane. I've now read some other articles, some say 5 is doable, some say it's very unstable, one states that the variation is overproportionally high for Intel CPUs.
I think it's because of their new 14nm process that might not be fine-tuned.

That's exactly what i've read, too. 99°C @5GHz is simply stupid and unusable, especially if the cores start failing, wtf.
Also TIM seems to be a huge problem with Kaby Lake which is why i wouldn't buy it, 99.9% of the users will never ever replace the TIM, which seems to be mandatory for good OC.
You article reads like technology satire, no wonder it's already earned the Kelvin Lake title.

thats a molex to fan connector, you only need that if you aren't using the mobo fan outputs. the other end has a molex pass through and a break out for the fan wire right?

Hey, new to all of this

So I want to build my own first PC, and came up with the following build ( pic related )

My motherboard is the ASRock Z170M Pro4S Intel Z170

Is that a good build for my budget ( ~900€) or something to improve?
>>
>>58422025
i can see it being a good overclocker, provided the tim is replaced and decent cooling is given, but not for your average gaymer. i like it though, gives me a chance to scoop up a cheap 6700k from cucks i see on fb

Get a cheap 1070
It'll overclock at least to a stock 1080 level
Spend the $250-300 you saved on some cocaine
No point in spending 1080-tier money for a 1070 with an expensive heatsink, especially when pascal cards tend to overclock really cool

Are M.2 Slots/M.2 SSD's a meme? I was going to go with a 500 GB SSD and a WD Black HDD but I keep reading that if you load your OS onto an M.2 SSD your shit will be fast as fuck. I'm considering cancelling my order of the physical HD and just getting a small m.2 ssd, like 250 GB and using that mainly for the OS and games and using the 500 GB SSD I have for everything else.

NVME M2 drives (specifically the Samsung 9-- series) are pretty fucking fast.
As for an OS drive, I think it's wasted since your motherboard posts slower than you boot, and for general work the speed is not very noticable. If you copy and rewrite huge files constantly though, and need that speed, the 960 pro can deliver
Personally I would just spend that kind of money on a huge SATA SSD, any SSD is already blazing fucking fast, the extra 4-5x speed of NVME isn't as noticable as the switch from HDD to SSD
>>
>>58422302
I am totally new to this, sorry.
Do the cards that have no cable power also lower performance?
>>
>>58422724
Okay so I have a samsung 850 EVO 500GB sitting here waiting for me to start my build when I get the rest of my parts and the only thing that's going to slow me down at this point is the WD Black 2TB HDD that I ordered weeks ago but isn't even shipping for another week and a half. I'm considering just cancelling it at this point because I hear they're kinda noisy.

So I should just buy another one of these samsungs? One for the OS/Games and the other for misc. other bullshit?

>amazon prime is actually quite nice
>>
>>58422766
If the card needed more watts than the PCIe slow could supply, then yes the performance would be bad
Luckily if a card needs an extra 5V power source, it has one, right?
Right Raja?
>>
>>58422676
Using an SM951 and 950 PRO as VM drives, they're insanely fast at booting four VMs each. Like, you blink and all eight of my VMs are already fully loaded.
>>
>>58422766
they shouold be about the same but the 75w cards with an external power connector will stay on boost out of the box. You usually have to undervolt a pci only 460 to do so. I'm not sure about 1050s

That's what I would do, I have only two SSDs in my computer and I'm not looking back, I got one NVME M2 drive (Intel 600p) but other than sequential reads it's not as impressive as I expected, and the boost from my SATA Intel 730 SSD is hardly noticable
I would be just as happy with two SATA SSDs

So, my current build is the following

>i5-4670
>GTX 760
>8 GB RAM
>1 TB HD

Does it make sense to upgrade to a GTX1060/1070, or should I save up a couple more months and build a whole new thing for $1000-1200?
>>
>>58423328
Kinda waste to build a new shit when the IPC gain is literally down to 1 or 2 digit, aka less than 10%.

For GPU, if you upgrade to 1060, you'd gain about 70% performance increase. Think about it in relative terms. If you play a game with 45fps, it will jump to 70+fps. If you play a game close to 30fps, it will jump to 50+fps. 1070 would be roughly 150% better than 760. So, 45->112 fps, 30->75fps

If you're playing only 1080p games, stick to 1060 or RX 480 upgrade, as that will be enough for 2-4 years.
>>
>>58423427
won't i get CPU bottlenecked in games?
>>
>>58423651
Majority of the games still wont use more than 4cores.

Or rather in another terms, multi-core scaling reaches diminishing returns at around 4core, so anything extra would only increase performance marginally(maybe few percentages) while you'd spend $300+.

Some people put a plastic cup of water (not cold, because that'll create condensation) on top of a naked CPU

Or you could just set the heatsink on and hold it down with a book or something
