Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

>>58402465
Vega is expected to match a 1070/1080 performance level, that's hardly 4K itself. At 4K, you're probably gonna be limited to 60fps, which means your CPU isn't as important as it is for high-fps gaymen, zen should be able to do it, but the last 4 years of Intel also should do it fine
I honestly think vega is unrealistic for 4K, you're probably gonna have to go with nvidia for that if you're expecting this before 2018
>>
>>58402505
I'm fine with high settings, maybe even turning it down to 1440p, and I'd prefer to avoid Nvidia for graphics cards.
But AMD themselves are promoting Vega to be able to push 4k, so we'll see.
Also, I'm not upgrading my CPU for gaymen, but for other tasks.
I'm just excited to have an all-AMD system after all these years ;_;
>>
>>58402526
The exact same quote that said vega was for 4K said the 470 was for 1440p
I'm all for sticking it to the man but don't buy and if it turns out to be shit
>>
>>58402550
I'll never go for the option equivalent to Nvidishill *80 pricing anyways, as the price to performance is just fucked beyond all belief, so I'm fine with Vega not being ubertopmeme

Morning, sunshines, I have some trouble choosing a MB for kabylake. So basically I have a pci soundcard which I will keep at any cost, so it comes only to 4 choices (upgrading bios of 170 ones isnt a problem):
*MSI Z170A GAMING M3
*ASUS Z170-A
*ASUS PRIME Z270-K
*ASRock Z270 Pro4
After some thoughts I'd like to prefer asrock over other ones. Is there any particular reasons why I should choose another one for using and probably OCing 7*00k?
>>
>>58402612
PCI to PCIe adapters exist
But let's not mention that PCI support hasn't been mandatory since broadwell, you're completely relying on motherboard hardware/firmware for PCI, it's out of the chipset and has mixed success with different motherboards and OS'es
>>

Get a better PSU brand
Looks gud tho

>>
>>58402646
>Get 1 8 GB stick instead of 2 4 GB sticks, leave a slot for future upgrades, you can also get a single 8 GB stick for about $10 less than what you chose there
>Rosewill is known as Roseshit for a reason, get a proper PSU, that is the last thing you want to cheap out on
>That said, that system does not need a 650 watt PS at all, use this http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator to calculate what you really need
>Get a cheaper MB, ones around $80 are just fine
>Mechanical keyboards are a meme, save your money for a better GPU, you will be glad you did
>Use savings I've already enumerated to get a 1070, or stick to 1080p but get a better monitor
>Beware those random nobody sites surprising you with shipping costs that are not included in this list

Avoid no name brands, past that just look at reviews, because even companies that are generally okay have lemons sometimes. One thing to bear in mind is not to weigh one "My shit was DOA" review get to you and psych you out of buying a piece of hardware, people who have shit that goes fine tend not to write reviews, and everything ever made has some failure rate. If it has lots of reviews and 3 stars then avoid that shit though.

Also check the chipset to make sure the MB you're looking at has OC support, just in case you're unaware that is something to consider.

Stupid question, if I were to remove the i3 processor from a dell inspiron 3520, could I use it in a PC build? If it is compatible, I don't think it will be a problem since the PC will be for older games like TF2, and I'm willing to buy a good graphics card.

Will I need to get separate SATA cables to connect my SSD? The one I got didn't come with any.
>>
>>58403279
Unless they explicitly say they are throwing in SATA cables, do not expect them, most of the time they are selling the drive and nothing else.
>>
>>58403302
What kind of SATA cable will I need? Will the power connector come from the PSU into the drive?
Also, will I need to get a tray for it or will the case include one?
Nothing I read included any of this extra stuff and I want this thing built by tomorrow.
>>
>>58403331
Sata3 (6Gbps), basically the only one you'll find
Yes you'll also need a SATA power cable, your PSU should come with plenty
Depends on your case, some come with HDD trays that have SSD mounts in them, some require you to buy a $3 3.5"-2.5" adapter, some cases just have holes to screw/slide your SSD into place directly onto the metal
If you don't have any of that, you can Velcro your SSD anywhere on your case, toss it into an empty bay of any kind, or literally just leave it hanging, SSDs aren't affected by how they're mounted
>>
>>58403363
Thanks a lot for your help.
>>
>>58403331
Get some SATA cables, just search "SATA cable" on amazon, these are SATA cables for data

The power supply has the power supply cables for SATA devices running out of it, only one type will fit the SSD, so you'll know it when you see it.
>>
>>58403363
One last thing actually.
The case I'm getting says it comes with two trays for HDD/SSD, but would it also come with the screws? Or would I need to buy them separately?

>>
>>58403527
Most headers support max 1A, just look at the fan specs and if both combined are less than 1A, its fine.

>>58403591
Usually the splitters will have one 4pin and one 3pin so one fan's PWM signal controls the speed of both fans.
>>
>>58403562
From what I'm seeing online, there is no standard max amperage through a fan header, but people are regularly pulling 1 amp+ through a single fan header on older motherboards
Noctuas website is shilling their fan as "ultra low power .06 amps" compared to "standard 2 watt (.16 amps) fans"
So I'm assuming, even with "normal" efficiency fans, you could put 2, 3 or even 4 off of a single fan header safely
>>58403591
But the PWM pulse comes from the motherboard, there's only one PWM signal. The fan speed sensing pin might be a bit inaccurate but it shouldnt affect how your fans work
>>
>>58402646
A 24" monitor really is worth the extra money. Check www.acerrecertified.com for good deals on monitors. I've read great reviews on the scratch & dent items.
>>
>>58403255

Do note it's AUS prices.
>>
>>58402931
Make sure you have enough sata cables. I doubt your mobo comes with 6. They cost $2. I'd get a 650w psu with at least an 80+ bronze rating, and make sure it comes with at least 6 sata power connecters. Dont buy Rosewill.

Get 6700K/7700K CPU, Z170/Z270 motherboard, and if you're at 1080p and 60hz, a RX480/GTX1060
Solidworks doesn't need a 24GB ECC OpenGL powerhouse for school projects, one of those gpus should keep those programs moving fast enough, and the 6700k/7700k CPU have hyperthreading, which 3D modeling programs take full advantage of
There is practically no difference between 6700K+Z170 and 7700K+Z270, that's more of if you simply want the newest or not, the K means it has idiot-proof overclocking
Get plenty of ram, and fast ram since Z170/Z270 can use fast ram, 16GB 3000mhz ram is usually at decent prices
Get an SSD, and the another SSD or an HDD depending on how much porn you hoard
Get a case of your choice, an evga G2 or seasonic anything power supply of 550w or more
You'll need a CPU cooler as well
Don't forget your programming panties
Of course this will all change depending on your budget

I have pic related, I can sell my MSI 1060 6G.
What would I get if I swapped this to an Gigabyte RX480 8GB G1 OC?
Obviously the following
>2GB more VRAM
>backplate, RGB
>vulkan
>no drivers [still a thing? I've experienced driver crashes on my 5770 and 7770, I've yet to experience a single crash on my 1060]

Windows 10 is objectively the better OS but it has that ol' botnet fucking you in the ass. Also the home edition is free from Microsoft
Make sure your case is the right size, ATX or mATX or whatever
Motherboards are tough because they all suck. Get the right chipset (Z170 can overclock and use fast ram, but isn't necessary if you're not overclocking or getting a K CPU). Check reviews. /g/ likes gigabyte ultra durable shit
Multimonitor depends on what you're doing with it. If you're not running two GPU heavy tasks at once like rendering a project and playing a game, or playing a game on both screens together, it might be worth it to get a stronger GPU like a 1070
But if you're not running two GPU heavy programs, you don't need anything more than a 480/1060, an extra desktop screen or chrome browser isn't gonna demand anything from the GPU

Nah not really, I've playing all those games at 60fps+ ultra settings on 1080p.
What got me into thinking about swapping it is because of comparisons between them now that they've released several driver updates and it seemed like the RX480 is starting to take the lead.
And admittedly I also love backplates as I'm planning to get the S340 Elite when its price drops.
I'm a filthy subtle ricer.

I took a lot of inspiration for this build from this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/zd4CmG

I really would like to get custom cables and cable everything the way this guy did as it looks really organized and the silver cables would fit the black and silver theme I was trying to stick to.

When it comes to placement of the radiators for the CPU and GPU I would do it the way he did if possible but I'm not sure if my case will allow that. This will be my first time building a PC.

My bad, it's 15%. Not 22%. Just ran a bench on my stock 6600k. http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/2516397
Quadcore integer and float score of 439, vs the average of 381 for the 6500. So 15% faster. I'm using a stock intel cooler I've had forever. Paid $230 for the 6600k. The i5 6500 is $204, so my 6600k was 13% more expensive while being 15% faster. The fact is that doesn't amount to a "waste" no matter how you look at it. Don't be mad just because you mindlessly followed some retarded guide from the OP or reddit.

That said blck overclocking on the i5 6400 with a ~100 dollar z170 board has been by far the best value buy all generation.

Minimum FPS: 17.23ms or 58.03FPS
Average FPS: 13.86ms or 72.15FPS

Let's see.. we are looking at 6900K + 1080 VS. Ryzen 8C16T + VEGA 687F:C1.
Now let's tell me why you are talking shit:
1. 1070.. 1080.. what are you talking about? Make up your mind.
2. Initially you said Vega is DOA because it can't even match a 1070, after seeing how it performs vs. the 1080, we can safely assume it's going to beat the 1070 without problems.
3. VEGA 687F:C1 is the name of the GPU, you do not know if that's everything Vega will bring to the table.
Overall, Vega beats the 1070 since it competes with the 1080 since it's min FPS difference is like 8 FPS and the average difference is 5 FPS and that's why you are talking shit.

Just jumping into this whole pc building nonsense for the first time. Got a price range firmly in mind, but the one question I have is this: In the interest of keeping to that price range ($1000-1500) what can I afford to skimp on that won't bite me in the ass? Case? Storage?
>>
i56600k or 6500 with a RX 470 build?
>>
>>58409081
1000-1500 is quite a big budget so you don't really have to skimp out on anything if you're just building a standard gaymen computer.
>>
>>58409081
>what can I afford to skimp on that won't bite me in the ass?
Honestly? Nothing. Everything will bite you in some way in the ass if you skimp on it.
A cheaper case will probably have worse cable management, worse fans, cheap build quality, etc.
A cheap SSD is likely to be slower, a cheap HDD is likely to be slower, louder and might fail you somewhere down the road.
This applies to ALL components, but of course there are good value options that don't have worrying downsides, but they obviously won't perform as good as top tier components.
Anyways, you shouldn't worry about it since you have a generous budget of $1000-1500 which is enough for a good PC.

>>58409108
Both are fine, if it's for gaymen only get the 6500.

I'm ripping out the innards of my Old PC and building a new one. I'm also re-using the HDD and I have an external HD which aren't listed here. Windows 7 I plan on throwing on a USB and uploading. I also have plenty of spare fans I'll be using to keep everything cool. The Monitors are ones I purchased when I made my first build and I plan on keeping them unless there's some reason I shouldn't.

Later half of the year I plan on either getting a second GTX 1080 or moving to a liquid cooling system. Let me know what you guys think.
>>
>>58409158
Well, it is 1500 CAD, so...

I guess what I want most of all is to understand just what I'm paying for with things like the Case. Looking at the "excellent" build on LI, for example. What the hell am I paying for with the "Storm Trooper?" I feel it necessary to mention I have absolutely no desire to fill my PC with a bunch of LEDs, since I'm a light sleeper to the point that I have to cover my laptop while I sleep to get rid of the damn blinking lights.

Is the point a more expensive case just space for fans/wiring?

PSUs have optimal efficiency at around 50% load and so you should get something like a 500-750w. It seems most 2tb HDDs are only marginally more expensive than 1tb ones, so maybe that's something you could look at.
Maybe also get a evga 1060, they are very lenient with their warranty.
That motherboard supports the 7600k and it overclocks higher than the 6600k, I don't see much of a reason not to buy it. Unless that 6600k is significantly cheaper.

You're over paying for that corsair mechanical keyboard.
If you could trim $100 off your total you could afford a 144hz monitor which you will love.

Here maybe something like pic related, $20 more bucks but you get 144hz monitor. You'll love it for games like overwatch, cs go, league, world of warcraft, rocket league, etc etc.
Next time you have a spare $40 grab another 8gb of ram for it
>>
>>58409300
>recommending EVGA GPUs
I mean, maybe they usually have good ones, but after their fuck-up with 1070 and 1080 cards I sure as hell wouldn't touch anything coming from their GPU division.
>>
>>58409293
The 470 scales really well when overclocked because it has less cores per rop than the rx 480 and so more bandwidth per core. an overclocked 6600k is a nice match for it. great value/pref buy.
>>58409332
it was a small percentage of 1070s and 1080s and the issue isn't present at all with their 1060s so
>>
>>58409353
Imho a 6600K @4.5GHz will sit back relaxing when paired with a 470 4G, i wouldn't bother with it unless you plan on upgrading the GPU or keeping the CPU for long.
>>
>>58409407
The other options are so shit though. I hate the locked i5s from the skylake line, they're all clocked so low that the 2500k beats them. I bought a i3 6100/1060 6gb last summer and ended up just picking up the 6600k and throwing it in my b150 mobo because the i3 was incapable of driving my 144hz monitor.
The locked kaby i5s seem like okish buys but their price is too close to the 6600k right now.
I do understand your point of view though. I don't even know how you were initially talking to, I just chimed in like a faggot.

>The locked kaby i5s seem like okish buys
6400 is.. meh, 6500 is good for budget/mid-range builds and if you don't want to OC.
Other than that you're right, the 6600K offer the best price/performance right now.
That's also why Kaby aka Kelvin Lake is such a huge failure with all it's issues and the 6600K and 6700K being so good.
>>
>>58409487
I was going to suggest a $40 mechanical from amazon but then I noticed the corsair has dedicated function keys and thought he might not want the qisan because it doesn't. But something like this https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483995442&sr=8-4&keywords=mechanical+keyboard is half the price and knock off switches are fine. couldn't find it on pcpartpicker
>>58409529
The 6500 is 12% cheaper for ~15% less performance than a stock 6600k.
Depends on exact budget, future plans, etc.
I bought the 144hz monitor after the i3. I originally had a 2500k/144hz but ended up selling them. Figured the i3 6100 was roughly equal to my old 2500k since i ran it at stock.
>>

fractals are alright, but a bit bland. Not to mention I'd rather the S over the r5. I'd say something like the Evolv ATX, S340/Elite or despite its flaws, maybe even a Pandora ATX with that board, or a krait, or if you want to get away from the "look how mature I am" aesthetic /g/ is so obsessed with an M7, maximus viii hero, or anything like that. your choice though
>>
>>58409597
6500 is more cost effective for budget builds since you can save money on CPU, mobo and cooler, but otherwise 6600K aaaaall the way.
>>
What are the general rules for applying thermal paste?
Like how much should I use? Is it bad to use too much?
How should you apply it too? There are so many methods of doing it online I don't know which one to use.
>>
>>58409703
Yes my point was just that the 6600k is a decent buy even in a mobo that doesn't support OC because it's stock clocks make it ~15% faster than the 6500. I suppose you do have to buy a cooler too though
>>
>>58409597
The keyboard you linked doesn't have dedicated fn keys either though.
>>
>>58409735
I've always used the 'dot' method, just put a roughly pea-sized dollop of thermal paste on the heat spreader and let the heatsink do the work for you

also, current setup, waiting for vega to buy GPU. Plan is to water cool and i'll probably get an 850 P3 PSU around then too

>>
>>58409783
Those fn keys have shared functions with media player keys. Those aren't dedicated function keys.
>>
>>58409783
So the cross method is the best?
I've read it needs to reach as far as all four corners to get the best results.
>>
>>58409868
ehh, not really. It uses a lot of paste and you don't really need 100% coverage on the heatspreader. Line and (if you use a bit more than in the video) Dot give enough to ensure good contact with your heatsink/block
>>
>>58409697
Fractal cases are overall excellent, they don't look like gaymer trash, are silent, fans are ok, R5 has a fan controller and good layout for storage and cable management.
Evolv is good, NZTX is meh and no idea about the Pandora. The MSI Krait is just objectively a shit board, not only because the (((gaming))) branding, but also because the shit VRM.
The Krait costs around $125 while the UD3 goes for $139, so usually about $15 difference, but it's worth the money. The UD3 is a smaller UD5 which received excellent reviews.

>>58409736
That's why, also no idea about you but here in EU the price difference is even worse because muh Jewish Union taxes.

Anyone know a decent Mobo that will support two GPUs and an i5 2500? I have a GTX 560 to 448 and a gt 730 (and as stupid as this sounds) I use the GT 730 as a dedicated physx card. And it works quite well, on Borderlands 2 I get an fps boost of about 7-10. There's just limited space for things, and the SATA ports are underneath my GTX, so I have to use right angle cables, and can't use one of the ports.

This one? Looks good but layout is hit imho, no exhaust other than top, only 2 intake front (probably fine though) but the most concerning part is how narrow the case is.
You'll probably have difficulties fitting any decent tower cooler in there which means AIO or top-blow.
Fractals don't have this issue, they can fit Trident Z RAM with it's huge heatspreaders and a NH-D15 which will have to have it's front fan moved up my 20mm.
>>
>>58410129
honestly I'd just stick with your current setup, sell the 560 and 730 and get a 470 or a 1050 ti, better to have the most powerful single card you can get than a separate dedicated card like that

I want to use a Fractal Design R5 case. That's all I know.

I have a $1000 - $1350 budget.

No, I don't NEED it, I just want something nice, fast, and reliable for work and play.

I checked out the logical increments thing and I like it but I feel like it's missing some info and my case I like wasn't on there.

Also outside of that budget I'm looking for some great 1440p monitors. Open to suggestions that are good for work and play

>>
>>58410266
Well, it's not a GTX 730. At most, I'd get 50 bucks from it. And I got the GTX 560 for 50, I could probably sell for 100
>>
>>58410651
If you're planning to game, get an SSD or if you want to go cheaper, get a Western Digital Black 1-2TB, as for power supply in case you want to add on to your build in the future, get a 650w for the extra head room, since you haven't chosen a monitor yet.
>>
>>58410651
Well, the calculated wattage is 279W, so a 350W would be sufficient, or 400W if you want some extra headroom. If you're planning to upgrade in the future, 500W would allow for an unlocked CPU + a high-wattage GPU.
>>
Is there any real difference between the different ram speeds (2133, 3000, 32000, ect...) or should I just get the one that fits my size best?
>>
>>58410302
>>58410400
Huge as fuck but looks decent, only downsides are no noise canelling insulation and you have to lay down the case sideways to access the front intake filter.

>>58410648
Checkout the Define S and C if you don't use the ODD cage. By 1440p do you mean 60Hz or more? Makes a price difference.
I'd say save like 350-400 for the monitor and spend the rest on the mobo, you may have to cut some edges with that budget depending on what you want.
>>
>>58410752
650 seems like a comfortable allowance, though it's starting to encroach onto my budget.

Is SSD worth the price/lower storage capacity? The Western Digital 1TB I'm looking at is all the storage I see myself needing in the forseeable future, I still have plenty of legroom even on my 500 GB laptop HDD after 3 years, though.

Is SSD really going to blow my socks off, to be worth paying over double for half the storage?
>>
>>58408136
490 is confirmed as not vega, and confirmed to be just as "4K" as the 470 is "1440p"
>>
Thinking about putting together a local file server for light/medium use between about 15-20 people and some database software (Sesame), would buying a server motherboard/cpu like a xeon be worth it at this level, or should I just shell out for a decent normal setup?

Alright then. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mqbkbj

Monitor and Keyboard are lesser concerns for now. I've got some hand-me-downs that will suffice until I've come to a decision on what I need. If I need external storage, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. For now, I'd like to square away my Case for as little as I can get away with.
