I think it depends more on whether your torrents contain several files (music/tv packs) vs single files (movies)

I've had deluge shit itself with only ~800 torrents, but it was mostly music

Does what you're seeding actually matter? I figured only the amount of torrents capable of connecting were what could slow down the program.
Also I've hear deluge is very bad at handling a lot of torrents. I usually hear about 500+ is when shit starts to slow down. rtorrent I know can handle however many you want.

Yeah I think it has to do with open file handlers, but I'm not too sure. I had to transfer to rutorrent. Unfortunately the Deluge thin client responds much faster than the Rutorrent web GUI, but at least I can run more torrents
