Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

>>
>>58349458
It's not too many questions my dude. It should last you 5 years if Intel speeds up 8 if they just rebrand and re-heat their chips. Your 1060 should do fine in the high 1080p spectrum, don't expect anything fancy though. It won't hit acceptable frames at 1440p Medium
>>
>>58349305
so few people actually do that so it would just waste more space.

4 cores for more whores

6 cores isn't necessary unless you're building a 64gb/sli/pci-e ssd gigabeast
>>

Thanks mang you're helping me reassure myself. I actually don't game but its nice to know that it can. So it is good to go for editing video yes? is there a better card than the 1060 in the same price range? I read that editing suites take advantage of the CUDA cores so i chose a nvidia card
>>
>>58349569
You read right, many editing software suites get a speed boost from the CUDA cores. The only alternative to the 1060 is the 480 but you need the CUDA so you're good.

I've been getting a lot of help from this threads, its my first build and all so I wanna get it right. I'm kinda under budget right now but I want to leave the possibility for upgrades in the future.

This is my current build, I am really considering dropping the GPU in favor of a Z170 ATX mobo. I want this machine mostly to play overwatch and do coding, nothing too intensive. The Pentium G4560 is from the Kaby Lake and comes with Intel HD610 APU; which is actually enough to run Overwatch in constant 60 in medium/high settings for 900p. So, would it be a good idea to sacrifice GPU for the sake of a more flexible and expandable mobo?

I'm just waiting for the G4560 to drop on Amazon to start buying all muh shit
>>
>>58349937
phanteks has an exposed optical drive bay. also does that thing have no front I/O whatsoever?

the r5 looks good. any reason to get the r5 over the r4? r4 looks a bit cleaner.
>>
>>58349958
I threw in the Phanteks for lols. I agree that from the pics the R4 looks cleaner. It's up to you my man. Have the search I used http://pcpartpicker.com/products/case/#s=0&u=1&f=2&t=4,3&sort=d6
>>
>>58349978
thanks friendo
>>
>>58349955
If you're under budget I'd **immediately** upgrade the G4560 to an i3 6100. It's the biggest performance bang for buck you can add to that build.

I would very much not recommend using integrated graphics for Overwatch, it will look and feel like shit. Your best option in the ~$100 range is to get a used card. Check your local Craiglist. Something like a 7950 would max overwatch at 1080p and not be much more than $100.

Z170 motherboards are a luxury meme for overclocking and that's about it. OH, ALSO NOTE: if you overclock your non-K chip the integrated GPU disables itself. So you need a card if you're going Z170.
>>
Any suggestions for a keyboard I should get for my new build?
>>
>>58349987
no problem amigo!
>>
>>58349955
>>58349991
Also, what exactly is your budget? I have a feeling you could get the price down fiddling with combos.
>>
I'm pretty familiar with the technical part of PC building, but I'm new to the price-watching game. Does anyone know how much we should expect a Skylake setup to drop in price now that Kaby Lake is out?

I'm trying to decide between
i5-6500/H170/DDR4-2133
and
i5-7500/H270/DDR4-2400

All else equal, I figure the Kaby Lake build is *slightly* more likely to survive an extra refresh cycle, but they're so close I would easily go Skylake for the right price.
>>
>>58350129
It won't. Intel never lowers retail prices (seriously, Haswell hasn't dropped a cent, check it out) and you won't exactly find Skylake on the used market yet.

There's also no reason not to get the 2400MHz RAM on the Skylake system, unless that's a limitation of the H170 chipset. I'm running 2400 overclocked to 2666.
>>
>>58350129
>>58350168
Oh, and important note - if you splurge for a Z170 board and the Skylake chip, there's a chance you can overclock the locked i5. An overclocked i5 6500 will obviously wipe the floor with a stock speed i5 7500. Look up the specific motherboard and "non-K overclocking" to find pertinent info.

>>58350188
I may do that, because then I can OC the RAM, too. I was hoping to avoid overclocking because I don't like introducing additional failure modes, but that might be the only way to up my performance/price ratio if Skylake isn't going to get discounted.

Well, I would rather G4560 since it's pretty much the i3 6100 but costs $75
This is the only comparison available right now, since the thing isn't even around yet.
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/298/Intel_Core_i3_i3-6100_vs_Intel_Pentium_Dual-Core_G4560.html

>it will look and feel like shit
It will be better than how I play it rn, 30fps with 47% render scale, it's literally making me go blind. Plus look at this Overwatch run with a G4500 + APU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bBN4LLBO8k
As long as it runs smooth, it will be enough for the time being.

Also, I have been checking craiglist and all but I live in a very rural area, most stuff is at least 100 miles away.

I kind of agree Z170 mobo's are a meme, but it's a good meme to put my money on since it will allow me upgrade for a very long time without having to buy another mobo. Thanks for the warning though, I did not know about the APU shutting down on OC.

>>58350071
I'm spending no more than $450.
>>
>>58350327
>pretty much the i3 6100
No, anon. That's not how Pentiums work.
>>
>>58350287

that's impressive. have you tried to game or render at that clock?

>>58350302

of course. witcher 3 is a very resource heavy game.

but seriously, pcpartpicker allows you to have 24gb vram gpu's in 4-way sli but only sells a mobo that allows 128gb of RAM. what use is that?
>>
>>58350388
Haven't tried rendering but I played about ten - twelve hours of Overwatch on it and it was fine.

Flash an archived BIOS. My motherboard came from the factory with a board where baseclocking had been "fixed". A quick flash undid that.

>>58350479
Skylake has memes like DDR4 and native USB3.1 support, which are imho worth it (buying new DDR3 RAM is investing in a dead platform). Performance wise, meh. Kaby lake is definitely not worth it.

my RX 480 maintains a high clock speed after exiting a game for no reason, why is this?

>>
>>58350627
Get a faster 1TB hard drive, unless you torrent metric shit tonnes of Hentai you literally don't need 1TB, much less 2

Or, two 1TB hard drives, and use one to backup the other.

>>58350649
I was going to do video editing, which can eat up memory combined with storing games.
>>
>>58350665
That's fair enough. If you're going for the lowest possible maintenance system I'd consider a good aircooler instead of the watercooling loop (less moving parts to fail) and I'd definitely get a second hard drive for backups (if you need any extra space you can scrap your backups and just use the drive)
>>
Took some advice from the last thread and updated my build. Couldn't find cheaper memory at 8GB or higher so I just kept it as is. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open. A bit torn between whether or not I should get one of the i7s or stick with the i5 6500.

hopefully this is a legitimate response Im replying to. i use Opera browser because supposedly its pretty light. I also have Dreamscene, the active desktop wallpaper for windows 7, which probably doesnt help, but it shouldnt be in the range of 500 to 800 to 1300 MHz
>>
>>58350679
Any specific parts you recommend?
>>
>>58350627
Short of part failure, the only thing that might possibly force you to update this is the RAM. If you really want to not have to touch this build and you have no budget, going up to 2x16GB RAM would be like a 5% price increase for a (I'm just SWAGing, but) >40% reduction in the chances you'd have to update this in the next 4-5 years.

Why the fuck does dual rad exist in most /BST/ builds then?

Why do we even have towers with consistently huge rad support? Is it all meaningless unless you are OC your chip an entire GHz beyond somehow?
>>
>>58351355
some people only care about having the absolute best numbers in a benchmark. dual rads are for memers who need to have the highest possible ghz with the lowest possible temps, and then spend most of their time on these machines shitposting on 4chan.

put yourself in perspective. what are you really doing with this machine most of the time? do you need dual rad and 5 ghz overclock? is that going to make your 106070/80/ti better in a way you're even going to notice? are you doing nothing but compressing large amounts of files all god damn day, or are you just spending money to have a higher number for no discernible reason?

yeah you can have dual rad if you want. your cpu will be cooler, your overclock will be about +200 ghz better. you will notice absolutely fucking nothing, but if that's what you want, go for it. chances are you'll spend the money on that, and then half ass a more important part of your build. cater to your needs, not to your wants.
>>
>>58351062
Im not totally sure, But I would bet that lower temps in general are totally fine, and any temperature under 100C is fine under non-operation

Yes. If AMD don't deliver, just get Kaby Lake. IIRC cpus should get released around Feb.

Any issues with this? Obviously it is budget. Probably not gonna game, but if I do then later I might buy a 1050 to go in it. One thing I wonder is, the b150m motherboard is only a few dollars more than the h110m but is there any advantage?

Toughts on this please? It's a build a friend made for me (I'm a complete ignorant when it comes to PC building and I need a second opinion on this). I want the PC for playing games like witcher 3 or dark souls and he says it should be enough to run them on high settings.

It's from a spanish store, because I'm from Spain, but you can easily read the components. Anyways if you don't understand anything ask me.

There's usually not any advantage on a higher priced motherboard other than "it has more RAM slots" or something.

Just get the one that fits your parts and it should be okay. Check reviews though. If the one you picked has 250 2 star reviews, don't get it.

Can someone help me here?

Just built my first computer and it wont turn on.

The motherboard LEDs come on and theres a blue light next to the 8 pin on my GPU (I think that means it has power)

The system doesn't boot, when I go to the power button on the top on my case when I press it the GPU RGB lights turn on for a split second and the back case fan starts spinning.

Everything is plugged in. Could I have missed something? why does it only turn on for a split second then off again, I don't really want to do it again because I feel like ive shorted the system or something.
>>
>>58352496
to clarify when I press the power button the Case fan and the GPU fan turn on for a split second and turn back off. The CPU fan doesn't move its plugged into CPU_FAN. Does this mean that the CPU is fucked?

>>58352934
Not often at all. From what I've seen in /sqt/, it's more often that a component is dead on arrival than someone has fucked their system. I'd guess the most common true fuck-up is accidentally shocking a component with built-up static electricity. This can easily be mitigated by not building on a carpet with socks on, and touching a ground (door handle, case of plugged-in PC, basically anything that you notice gives you a shock) before you start building. If you're truly paranoid, get an anti-static bracelet, they can't be more than $10.

If you watch any PC build instructional video, you will know what to expect, and if it's a good video, it will point out common pitfalls, so if you're thinking of building a PC, do that.

Doom 2016 gives me solid 45fps with some rare drops on high-ish settings (some things are ultra, some things like bloom or HDR are disabled, some are high, a mess overall).
Skyrim on ultra's with a bunch of graphics mods and texture packs gives me 50fps with some drops, sometimes even a bit below 30fps, but that's rare.
Dota 2 Source 2 gives me a solid 60fps without a single drop.
I don't really play all that many new releases, so not sure what other examples to give.

FYI 6400 won't overclock that well, it's been shown that those silicon really are worthless pieces of shit meant for the lowest-bidding corporate users. Getting to 3.5GHz is a tall order for those SKUs. Kaby Lake is superior in all aspects when it comes to high core and BCLK frequency adjustments and a 7350K can be overclocked beyond 4.5GHz, making it inherently superior even over four physical cores.

Go onto overclocking forums. There are quite a few people who bought the 6400 over the 6500 and 6600 in the hopes of getting a better value for their money with a four core, but couldn't get past 3.7GHz. Meanwhile, 6500s have been breaching the 4.0GHz barrier routinely. I think the 6405P can get higher overclocks than the 6400, but there aren't that many people who've bought them for a rough average (two samples I've seen have gotten up to 3.8GHz, but that's just two samples).

I think that intel kaby lake is a big improvement due to Optane support, improvement of RAM speed, improvement of clock rate, and faster and cooler processor. You also know this processor is the best around for overclocking, better than skylake. So, this is a great news for many, those who want more speed can buy anything K and overclock.

Currently it's generally a bad time to upgrade but if you want to upgrade this year then wait for Zen, see how it performs and then either get Zen, cheap Skylake or wait for whatever comes next.

Spec me a PC case please.

Budget: Up to £150
Cooling: Air

Prefer a case with good amount of fans / cooling as I don't have any custom fans bought.

Would appreciate good build quality. Maybe no shiny plastic as it gets scratched up over time (like the top of my Z11 Plus - the sides are fine though, they're sort of a matte plastic which I like).

Currently have a Zalman Z11 Plus which is fine but It's a case I've had for some time and I want to try and get a case where It's easier to tidy up cable management and clean dust. FYI I don't have a modular PSU.

Behold, my first pc build from October 2015. A series of uninformed opinions and poorly spent money. The PSU was DoA, and I had lost the warranty paper. Had to run to bestbuy to get the cheapo evga 600w 80+ unit. Motherboard was a piece of shit and kept throwing me random freezes. Spent 3 months diagnosing it before I knew for sure it was the motherboard. I played World of Warcraft a lot which barely utilized the extra cores, leaving me with a 4ghz Athlon more or less. I was too retarded at the time to install the hyper 212 so i used the jet engine sounding amd stock cooler.
