used to think this was really ugly, but I don't think it's so bad now.

would consider it if I ever wanted a 65% and if it came out in black aluminum

I plan on getting a qisan magic force with cherry mx blues. Are they decent keyboards for the price? I don't want to pay more than 50 on a keyboard.
>>
>>58259352
They recommended pretty often here, and there are quite a few anons who own it. It's supposedly pretty nice for the price.

Anyone know when whitefox will be available again? Either that or a ~60% redscarf? They seem like neatest ~60% keyboards out there.

Have a Corsair Vengeance K65, it's got a 6.5 inch spacebar so most keycap kits will have issues. I'm trying to make my own custom ones that emulate other keycap themes. Anyone have a good color/theme aesthetic I should go for? Probably something that works with the gunmetal grey on this board.

It's good, very tough and sturdy for that price. I like that the raised feet are big and have rubber on them too. Only cheap thing is the keycaps themselves though. Very thing and you can tell the lettering is probably going to wear off eventually. But I guess they needed to cut costs somewhere. Wish replacement keys weren't so expensive.

>less functional keyboard
questionable.

it's programmable with layers, I could program it to do whatever I want, and that's not something you can do with most keyboards beyond simple things with dip switches

but they still cost more than they're worth for even more obvious reasons
- less demand
- small production

I have a mid 90s Dell rebadge Model M, it's missing three pins in the PS/2 connector, but seems to work fine, apart from the caps lock and scroll lock indicator not lighting up.
I've placed an order in for a new old stock cable from Unicomp, but I'm curious as to why it can still function properly, and whether or not the pinout damage has affected the LEDs in the caps and scroll lock indicators

Returned it and am using my old CM Storm QFR instead, no backlighting to fuck up
>>
>>58264568

Ducky make great boards as long as you don't get a Shine 5 or 6
>>
>>58264584
What the fuck are you talking about?
>>
>>58264584
Really wasn't impressed with my Shine 5 in general, the brushed plastic looks like shit IMO and the included cable is cheap. The plastic case flexes a lot, more then my QFR, granted that's a TKL and not fullsize, but I expected better.

The backlighting looked great while it worked with the white PCB reflecting the light nicely.
>>
>>58264780
Considering a Ducky One TKL RGB. so almost a shine. i just really want backlighting and leopold doesnt make backlit keyboards
>>
>>58265060

>>58264584
I got my blackwidow ultimate for $50 like 4 years ago. haven't had a single issue.
>>
>>58264789

>>
>>58264780
Besides the hideous teeth on the case, what's wrong with the Shine 6?
>>
>>58265250
There's nothing functionally wrong with it afaik but it's the most gaudy board I've seen that isn't some cheap gaymer membrane crap.

Everything about it is ugly. From holding one too, it doesn't feel as nice as the older Shines

Ducky Shine 3 owner here and I'm very happy. Quality really is top notch and is way ahead of the Corsair K90 I used to own. It's held up real well over three years and even survived two coffee spills. I'm going to be upgrading to the One RGB TKL soon for the better ergonomics.

Anyone know any good low profile mechanical keyboards? It may just be autism but I can't stand high keys on keyboards.
>>
>>58267366
The reason why HHKB is so poplar was that back in the mid 90s they had support for pretty much every peice of software all in one small package, which is also why they were expensive. Now days most software is open source and it doesnt really mater, but the price stayed the same and now its considered more of a status symbol.
>>

There is no such thing as a low profile mechanical switch, well there was but they stopped making them a couple years ago. Now days you only have mid profile or those extremly shitty omron switches that razer uses if you want low profile.

Are you sure that it wasn't one of the rubberdome variants? That may be why it was so cheap. Unless you took off a keycap.

Blues are very nice, but I like my keys to be very springy and quite stiff, so I enjoy the buckling springs more.

I used to own a White ALPS-clone Acer keyboard (Acer 6311), it was weird, was my first mechanical tho, and I almost cried when it kicked the bucket. I still have it as a donor system in case i ever find another one.

Nope, it has buckling springs. It was so cheap because the guy labeled it as for parts/not working, but in the description wrote that it worked when it was last used in 2015.

I used it all day today, and I get the appeal if you like stiffer keys. I took a few typing tests with each just to compare, and I type about just as fast regardless of which I'm using. I just prefer the lighter key press of cherry switches.

Definitely hang on to the alps board. If you like the switches, you can do what I did and just make a DIY board with it. My board had several switches die (monterey blue, alps mount key caps) and a ridiculous layout so I cut the plate, got a custom case laser cut, hand wired a matrix, flashed a teensy, etc. Total cost was >$60 and I ended with a better keyboard than I started with. I now have: fully programmable layouts, multiple fn layers, removable cord, two extra modifier keys, much smaller footprint, and some other stuff that I'm probably forgetting.

If nothing else, you can probably strip the switches and key caps and sell those.

Oops, that should be less than $60, not greater than. The teensy was the most expensive part, including the laser cutting.

I also have a matching number pad but I never wired it up because I would never use it. It cost nothing extra to get the case cut since I did it at the same time.

I did it /mkg/. I actually went out and bought a mechanical keyboard. First thought? Wow this is a lot different from I thought. I bought a blue switch keyboard and typing on it is absolutely wonderful but now I know why they say blue switches aren't recommended for gaming.

Then again I couldn't tell why I would want a red when someone they just feel like normal membrane keyboards to me..
>>
>>58269126
>blue switches aren't recommended for gaming.
for what reason?
>>
>>58269135
autists mostly
>>
>>58269135

I don't know exactly, but I found that there was this "mid-way" point between me actually depressing the switch, like the switch needed more distance before coming back and there was a midway point. I realised that I was always hitting that midway point, and that caused some degree of inaccuracy in the key being depressed. I don't know if that made any sense, I don't know much about mechanical keyboards.
>>
>>58269170
Basically the reset point is slightly higher than the actuation point.

I still prefer blues for gaming than Topre though. It feels like Topre switches reset very slowly. Like when capitalizing the first letter in a sentence, sometimes I accidentally capitalize the second sentence because the shift key is still pressed. Or maybe that's just me.
>>
>>58269209
>capitalize the second sentence
capitalize the second letter*
>>
>>58269148
That's what I figured. I've been using blues for gaming for years without an issue.
>>
>>58269126
That's bullshit. Yeah, if you want to press the same key twice really fast you gotta wait for it to come back up, but it's still better than rubber domes, and I'd take the much better tactile feedback any day over a boring linear switch, even for gaming.
>>
>>58269209

Ah yeah basically that. I was using membrane keyboards my whole life beforehand, I'm not too used to the higher reset point. But man typing on this thing is very satisfying.

The Tomoko one on Amazon is good for cheap. There's one with and one without a numberpad.

People say reds switches are better for gaming, but these blues are fine and you might even prefer them.
>>
>>58270403
Why is everyone unable to read the OP and use the buyer's template? There are a lot of keyboards under $100, but how do you expect people to recommend you something when they don't even know what you want and need?
>>
>>58270631
I read the buyer's guide, all I really know is I want brown or blue switches and I could take or leave a numpad. That doesn't exactly narrow it down enough to be worth mentioning.
>>
>>58270660
Yes it does. Now I know it's fine to recommend a TKL but probably not a 60%. I also don't know if you want backlights. All of that could be in a single post if you used the template.

Regardless, the Tomoko is the cheapest decent keyboard you can get. If you want backlights then it's a little bit harder to get under $100, unless it's a single color.

It's a matter of preference for gaming, probably. I was looking for a red switch one but finally settled on a blue switch. It takes some getting used to and by that I mean it takes five minutes.

I've only used a blue switch now, but if you like the idea of a clicky switch you can clearly hear and feel, it's a good choice.

If you want something like that but less noisy, I guess brown is the good choice.

Reds are supposedly smooth, you don't feel them indicate exactly when they register a keystroke. Some say this makes gaming easier, but it's probably all opinion.

One thing is for sure, even with the whole "reset point is higher" thing with the blue switches, they're still nicer to use for gaming than a membrane. It won't make you any better at games, though. Just has a nice feel, and satisfying to type on.
>>
>>58271886
It has a standard bottom row so it should be fine.
>>
>>58271864
if you got tiny mongolian hands, they might be ok. but they are too light for my fat hands. cant rest a finger on a key without them responding.
>>
>>58271864
Reds and Blacks are *ideal* for gaming but they feel like shit to type on, compared to tactile switches. Browns are a great middle-ground switch. Blues feel the best to type on, but their only problem is keys need more time to be released before you can press them again. This is bad when the same keys need repeated keystrokes in games. I would not recommend blue switches if you play a lot of fast paced games, like FPS or RTS.
>>
>>58271985
Think I'll go for browns then, since I type more than I game anyway.
>>
>>58271864
>Are red switches a gamer meme
mostly yes
they are better for doubletapping fast because you don't need to wait the switch to 'reset' like blues for example, but they don't feel anywhere near as good to type on because of the lack of tactile feedback
>>
I can't really speak for red switches, but I still think I'd prefer blue for gaming anyway. The double tap thing is blown a little out of proportion, it's still less effort to do than double tapping on a membrane keyboard, I feel. Just gotta take your finger all the way off.

Movement is a major part of aiming in FPS games, yes, but I still think other factors come into play long before what mechanical switch you're using.
>>
>>58272006
I just got my first mechanical keyboard. Like you, I play games, but I type way more than I game. I got a Ducky One with Browns, and I'm very happy with my decision.

I probably would have been happy with Clears too, but I really need to test them out someday.
