Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer from start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

I didn't give you permission to reply to me. Listen, it was entertaining, first. Hell, it was actually funny.

But now I'm getting the feeling that you actually think that you're on my level. From the day I was born, I was destined for success, you little shit. I was brought into this world by a software engineer and and a prominent actuary, both of Norwegian descent. From the moment that the fucking curtains were raised, I was set to dominate the STEM fields. And because I had guardians that actually cared about me, I flourished. Pretty soon, I was placed into a special school of correspondence, specifically I.M Gelfand's school for gifted children in New England. I not only reached my parents' expectations, but I passed them with flying colors. I had raw talent. I was fucking better. I was surrounded by 6th graders, many from Hong Kong, whom were smarter than half the posters in this fucking thread. And now, where am I?

In MIT, getting my double BS in Electrical Engineering and Physics, with a Stanford-Binet tested IQ of 147 at age 17.

Get this through your head: you are nothing. I am worth more than your entire goddamn family. I'm smarter than you, better looking than you, taller than you, wealthier than you, and more employable than you. While you type out another post to get cheap laughs, I'll be simultaneously working with the brightest minds in the world and fornicating with my beautiful girlfriend. It gets on my nerves when people pretend to be better than me.

Know your place, you fucking vermin. Never, ever reply to my posts, again.

I have sailed across this planet and from my experiences there are two things which seems to show the earth is a sphere. 1. When sailing we are constantly on watch for other ships and have our own terms for their own positions such as on or under the horizon. i have personally seen many ships which are so far away that all you can see first is their smoke then the uppermost portion, then the whole ship from top to bottom on the horizon then in front of the horizon. this would indicate true curvature. 2. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Well this is true unless the line is traveling over a curved space. When sailing from point A to B all ships travel what is known as the great arc so as to save time. this something that can be physically seen and i have myself steered this arc. This is my own two cents. P.S. I believe in a lot of things most would say nay too but from my own experience it seems the earth is round. I welcome your comments.

The problem with most pictures of desktops that I see is that they are actually violating your freedom, even if you do not actually realise it. Firstly, most desktops that I see are desktops of machines that are using Operating Systems which are non-free, such as Windows, Mac's OS, or certain GNU/Linux distros such as Ubuntu. You should be running a distro such as Gnewsense, which contains nothing but free software. From time to time, I will accept the use of Debian for newcomers, but that has the problem of official repositories openly offering non-free software to the user, which is a violation of your freedom. Another issue is the fact that a lot of images that people use as their backgrounds are copyrighted images, so you are actually breaking the law by using an image for your own enjoyment, which is wrong. To avoid this, use images which are licensed under an art libre license, such as the GNU Free Documentation License, or the Creative Commons license.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Ricing GNU/Linux is made by not only choosing themes and colors, but what software goes in your computer. "Display Managers" are the login screens, "Window Managers" are the part drawing the borders, colors, etc, and "File Managers" are what handles how you browse your machine. More info:
