I've been running GNU/Linux for years, and have owned many android phones, all of which have been rooted as soon as possible. This time, I'm going with an iPhone because manufacturers and service carriers do not give two fucks about the consumer.

Unless you buy an international version, you have to wait or find an exploit to get root access. Even better, once you get an android device, it's only supported for a couple of months if you're lucky. You have to unlock the bootloader and run custom ROMS to get at updates. I've been playing this game for years, and it's tiring. First off, half the shit marketed as advantages on android devices are of zero or less value to the vast majority of smartphone users, so that greatly reduces how competitive they are.

Second, Android vendors do the thing where they make 50 scarcely distinguishable models instead just 2 or 3 that covers most people. This is intimidating to average folk, and the simplicity offered by iPhones alleviates the intimidation. Whether or not it's true, people feel like they're getting a great phone regardless of which iPhone model they buy.

The fact is that Android having majority marketshare is owed to the majority of the people on the planet who buy the cheapest thing on the shelf and never use any of the "smart" functionality of their smartphones.

If you want the answer, Android phones have to compete not only with Apple, but with every other phone running their same OS. Apple only has to compete with Android as a whole, as once you decide you want iOS you cannot buy a phone running it from another manufacturer. If Apple licensed its mobile OS to other companies, they would then need to compete as much as Samsung or HTC do.
