Running Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 on a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 14. For some strange reason, once I watch a YouTube video, the sound won't work in any other program than Firefox. Sometimes the icon even disappears from the panel, but usually it stays there and does nothing out of the ordinary. I have to restart the computer to fix it. It happens in Cinnamon, too, so it's not a GNOME thing. Could someone help a guy out?

Also, is there a newbie-friendly distro that runs both GNOME and Cinnamon well? Because Cinnamon runs just fine on Ubuntu, but GNOME runs like ass.

Trying out MATE for the first time. It's actually amazing, it's so impressive. They actually manage to somehow break every single part of their operating system. It is truly an amazing feat, it's as if their is an AIDs cancer virus that just goes through and just breaks fucking everything all the time. How do they do it? Truly impressive.

What the fuck are these autism arrows in my scroll menu? Why do I feel AIDs cancer seeping into my pores through my screen whenever I use any of the abysmal themes included? Why are they fucking homosexual bubble sounds trying to ear rape me whenever I click on something? Why is the panel so fucking shit to configure?

Holy fuck I thought Xfce was bad because of the shit compositor, WM themes, and buggy panel.

Because the running process will still be the old version until you restart it. What Linux does is load the whole executable into RAM and load it off there instead of streaming from disk as it needs like Windows does.

Thank you. Since Mint doesn't come with pulseaudio by default, would it have this problem? If there's no other option, I'll give up on GNOME and stick with Cinnamon if it means I don't have to restart my computer five zillion times a day. Or is pulseaudio something I want no matter what?
>>
>>58082933

Well yeah, you do want pulseaudio since alsa is kind of fucky and some apps don't allow it to work with multiple apps. What pulseaudio does is mix all the sound together and send it to alsa as one stream.

Yeah, it's K-On, and the characters are Mio, Yui, Ritsu, Mugi, and nice little Fender Mustang cat.

Nevermind, I think I figured it out.

Anyway, I'm running btrfs on a chromebook and it tends to be slow despite having COW turned off on various files (e.g. the chomium directory) so I'm looking at using a different scheduler.

I realized that I need to change the actual grub conifg in /etc/grub.d/40_custom because that's where I keep the menu entries for booting from my desktop subvolume. I only changed the entries for booting from the default subvolume.

Linux student here.

So I just finished another Linux based course for my IT degree and have a couple questions for you more experienced anons:

1) I was told to consider getting "Linux certified" in the coming years to go with my IST degree by one of my profs. What your guys' opinions on such a certification? Is it necessary?

2) I am terrible at memorizing commands and Linux resources, so I decided to take an engineer's advice and make my own Linux commands and vulnerabilities bible. You you gents have and reading material recommendations to build it off of?

For the record my degree has an emphasis in Security and Networking.

Also you memorise commands if you are using it very often.
>>

So command bibles aren't a thing? It's just memorization from constant use?

I feel so retarded. I've been using Linux on and off for years from school to my own virtual machines and home server, I still can't keep it in the brain.

Hopefully my internship will put me on a Linux system for 8 hours a day 5 days a week so I can finally get gud.

Regardless thanks gents.

Hi, you should follow this:
>Ubuntu
Pros: Reliable, can shape itself to whatever you want, it's noob friendly and is one of the most used frankendebian distros
Cons: apt a shit , tons of documentation to read, PPAs are horrid if they are too old for your release.
>Fedora
Pros: Consistent speed across all of my computers, dnf is fast, community slightly less dumber than Ubuntu's.
Cons: slight learning curve, dnf is a bit complicated, slow inside a vm.
>Arch-based distros (Mainly Manjaro)
Pros: Stable if you're not a retard, pacman is the fastest i've used, customization levels are insane and the AUR is great
Cons: The community is retardedly elitist, most people on /g/ will hate you for some unknown reason, it'll break if you do retarded shit like kernel swapping

hiro, bro, I Know youre prolly busy selling user data rn but I've got an idea for our imageboard. on /g/, you see, we impliment a script that autobans anyone who makes a post with more than one quotation mark either side of a quoted phrase, and make it a permaban if the offending quotes are around a word on a wordlist.

That doesnt demonstrate anything though. You cant mulitply the meaning of quoting something. Hell, most language isnt suitable for mathematical multiplication, all saying "arch linux'" over and over again does is make it sound meaningless
What would it had meant if I had said
> all saying """""""""""arch linux'"""""""" over and over again does is make it sound meaningless
?
Its nonsense.
The only other interpretation is that its scarequotes, which cast doubt onto the thing quoted, but disregarding how entirely child-like trying to multiply doubt by spamming quote marks is, casting doubt on "he" is completely random and out of nowhere. Casting doubt on "software" in
>free """"""""""software""""""""""""
doesnt even make any more sense than multiplying the quoted-ness of "arch linux"
The most charitable I could be is to just assume the only meaning it has is that its a meme.
>>
>>58085957
""""""""""""you don't""""""""""""
>>
>>58086023
it seems like your brain just can't understand language and is unable to think of mathematical operators as something abstract that can be applied to words as well.
yeah, ""*x on arch linux doesn't make much sense but it shouldn't. learn to use language properly and you shouldn't have even felt the need to try and surround arch linux by multiple "".
"""""""""""""free""""""""""""" education
does this make sense to you? this cast doubts on the possibility of something being free as in cost
free """""""""""""education"""""""""""""

>>
>>58086120
again, if its casting doubt then most of the time its completely nonsequiter, so LOLRANDOM, or otherwise etremely idiotic use of tem.
Are they just autistic, and so understand sarcastic, indirect language like "scarequotes" only in a very cereberal and conceptual way, and so use them in an extremely generalized and generic way often incompatible with the way normal humans do?
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""'whatever""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""", though

>etremely
>tem

>>
>>58086237
you still don't understand how to use them, refer to my two previous examples. you can't possibly cast doubt on 'whatever' as you would with normal scarequotes. it's not idiotic at all and makes complete sense, it's just a little silly but that isn't really anything that makes the operation of multiplying the ""'s invalid.
i've never seen anyone make use of such a long one though so I'm borrowing it for the most autistic scenario

CTRL+MOUSE_BTN1 cycle_values video-unscaled yes no
CTRL+MOUSE_BTN3 add video-zoom +0.1
CTRL+MOUSE_BTN4 add video-zoom -0.1
CTRL+LEFT add video-pan-x -0.01

CTRL+RIGHT add video-pan-x +0.01
CTRL+0 set video-zoom 0.0; cycle_values video-unscaled yes no

There is additonally to "yes" and "no" "downscale-big", which may be useful as startup scaling.

All my problems can be seen in this webm

1. When dragging files around on my desktop and trying to put them into my file manager, it doesn't know my file manager is there and just places them on the desktop.

2. I love the theme i am using (https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1099906/) but there is a problem, when i click and drag to make the select box, it had no transparency. I think it would be an easy thing to fix, but i do not know how to fix it. Which is really annoying, because i do not want to change.

3. On the directory in the quick selection thing on my file manager on the left (with documents, videos, pictures etc) Desktop does not show up there anymore? Yes i have done sudo dnf update and restarted, but that hasn't fixed anything. Any help would be great.

When it comes to Artwork, do whatever you want. It doesn't harm anyone when they save and use a nonfree picture. CC0 is actually the best idea. You can restrict people from using pictures without naming the author with, I think CC 3, but that's what faggots do. Pictures don't do harm so set them free.

Not that you asked, but even RMS finds "proprietary" artwork (and other non-program things) to be fine.
