Long story short: My dad went to China on a business trip and didn't use a burner phone. He came home and synced his iPhone with his Macbook Air. I'm concerned about scary Chinese malware/spyware/whatever spreading to our other PCs (including mine).

Question: In order for chinkware to actually reach our other PCs, it would have to move via the path in pic related. That's iOS (ARM) →OSX (x86) →Linksys WRT1900 firmware (ARM) →Windows/Linux (x86). Realistically, is that kind of OS/firmware and CPU architecture hopping even possible?

Go into the BIOS and tell it to prioritise the HDD. Or the hard drive isn't bootable anymore, so just boot into a live distro and ask grub to fix it.

My question: If I work in a group of 4ish people for a university video game concepts and design course, and I contribute music to our game, do I by default retain copyrights to those assets? I'll likely be making them specifically to be used in the compilation. Would I have to slap a license on them?

My RX 470 keeps losing signal to monitor randomly when I bump the desk. I know I'm not alone because there's tons of other people on google having this problem, the difference is it seems to happen to them at random points in time, while it only happens to me when I bump my desk (which is common enough to be a problem).
There is no fucking solution to it, except for rebooting.
I'm poor and I can't believe I wasted my money on this shit, Should I just kill myself? I don't know how to return items, and I'm doubtful that the replacement GPU wouldn't have this problem since it seems to be common.
Does any other RX 460/470/480/whatever have this problem? how are you dealing with it?

Btw it is not a software issue, it occurs even when sitting on the grub boot screen.

So Windows doesn't really handle high resolutions very well

I've currently got a 3200x1800 screen and there's visible blur, would putting down the resolution to 1920x1080 give me an accurate representation of how programs would scale if I had a 1080p screen or is it more artificial

depends what kind of scaling your monitor does

pic related, linear scaling is common, but point will give you a picture closer to that of a native monitor with half your screen resolution
>>
>>58076326
-- also, point scalers only work well with whole multiples (2x, 3x, 4x, etc)
so for a 3200x1800 display, you'd want to use 1600x900, 800x450, etc (3200 doesn't divide evenly into 3)
>>
>>58076326
>>58076357
to clarify, if you set your display to 1600x900, and it uses a point scaler, it will look pretty much like it would if you were using an actual 1600x900 display

Even then, I think I wasn't too clear with what I meant. I've got a 13.3" screen, when I launch Avidemux, it looks like this, which is absolutely tiny.

If I put the resolution down to 1080p, will it essentially show me how this program would scale on a different 1080p 13.3" screen?

i see that program doesn't completely support higher DPI
some elements are scaled up, but others are not

if you set your machine to 1920x1080, and set the DPI to what windows calls "100%", it would look similar to if the display was 1920x1080, but a little blurrier, as it would most likely use linear scaling, since it's not a whole multiple

perhaps what you really want is just a way to use the program properly, you can try ticking the box in pic related for that program
i'm unsure exactly what it does on a high dpi display, i don't use windows so i can't test it, but if it causes the program to act as though it doesn't support high dpi, then it will probably make the program look more proper

that looks like 125%, it's a bit bigger than normal

here's the linux version, left is the normal 96dpi appearance, right is the same, but point scaled 2x
displayed unscaled on your display, the right will look almost the same as if your monitor was 1600x900

Tried this and everything looked ridiculously small unfortunately. Scaling up to 150% looks better since things are more normal sized, but still a bit blurry. I guess that's due to the linear scaling that you mention. I suppose it's still a good indication of how a 1080p monitor would look though? Avidemux does look better

As for the other part

hdd;
small partition at the beginning for / (rootfs)
rest for /home, or rest minus space for a swap partition if you want one

ssd;
single partition for everything, or two, one for swap, if you want one

the reason is that hdd's are faster near the beginning, while ssd's are the same speed everywhere, so positioning data doesn't matter

also, let the first partition start be default (hit enter instead of "0%"), parted will align it properly that way

ext3 is legacy, it's basically a subset of ext4, in fact, in recent linux kernels, ext3 partitions are mounted with the ext4 driver. just use ext4 unless you're sharing the disk with something that only supports ext3

i've pretty much exhausted my windows/highdpi knowledge, i don't use either
one thing you can certainly do is just set your windows resolution to 1600x900 with 100% size while using that program, that will make everything look like the "image on the right", maybe a bit blurrier if the display uses linear scaling, but the same size nonetheless

perhaps consider opening a bug to the developers of avidemux to request better dpi scaling support on windows

I have a PC running an ASUS motherboard (about 5 years old). Since like 2 days, it seems to shutdown at random usually 1-8 hours after booting it up. It's apparently ASUS' anti surge protection thing to prevent power surges (as indicated by the message it gives me after rebooting).

Various forums state that Asus' anti surge is oversensitive and gives a fuckton of false positives and advise to disable it (I even found some ASUS representative saying it was safe to disable it). I'm scared to disable it though, since I don't want to potentially fry my components (I'm not sure if components other than my motherboard have any kind of voltage regulation/protection).

What would be the right thing to do? Keep in mind that verifying the PSU with a multimeter is not a valid test, since I highly doubt I'd be able to see a voltage spike on a multimeter, they usually have pretty shit update intervals. I don't have a second power supply to swap my original one with, so I can't test the PSU that way either.

Also, looking at the voltages in my BIOS shows me the following numbers:

- CPU Voltage 0.984V (stable)
- 3.3V Voltage fluctuates from 2.9xx to 3.1
- 5V Voltage hangs around 5.04 - 5.08 V
- 12V Voltage 12.384V (stable)

This, combined with the fact that the 3.3V number turns red once it drops below 2.95V leads me to believe that it may be my 3.3V voltage dipping far too low. ATX specified that the tolerance for the 3.3V line is +-5%. The numbers I get for my 3.3V line seem to fall far out of that specification. Is this the problem?

Everytime I launch Firefox I have two processes running. As far as I can remember this didn't happen before. Sometimes when I exit Firefox a window remains (but not usually) that says "about:blank" and is just white space.

I tried to duplicate the window for this thread but its a rare occurance.

Also sometimes the memory shoots through the roof, like 10 gigs of RAM on the secondary process (i have 16).

Ending one of them closes Firefox, except for those rare instances above where "about:blank" remains.

This seems like some pretty shady shit, I'm assuming its Malware of some kind, but I don't know where I would have picked it up. My days of shady porn sites are behind me, and I use Bitdefender, Windows Defender, and Malwarebytes and they don't detect anything.

You can find this information on the internet easily but in summary:

- Mega means 10^6 in every standard unit. So when referred as MB it should mean 8*10^6 bits since 1 byte is 8 bits according to international standard unit thingy.

- The different understanding is MiB called mebibyte. This uses exponents of 1024 instead of 10. So 1 mebibyte is equal to 8*1024^2 bits.

In the end Microsoft sticks with the MiB GiB convention and pretty much everyone else sticks with standard unit convention. And since the *iB's are larger than *B's you get lower sizes reported in Windows. It's unnecessary in my opinion.

For RAMs it's a different story. They almost always report GiB or MiB because the memory range that can be addressed is always 2^something, so it makes sense for them to use this convention. Otherwise some regions may not be addressed.
