my galaxy s6 charges very fast compared to every other phone ive ever had when plugged into the wall, i believe it has usb 3.0 or something

now which piece is making it charge fast? it can't just be the phone, because it won't charge as fast in the car, so it's either the detachable microusb-usb wire, or the actual plug that goes into the wall?

is there a way to get this fast charging in a car? or is the only thing that matters in a car charger the amperage (eg 2.4a power output on x car charger compared to 3.1a on y charger)

I'm clueless about electronics and have Arduino ambitions. Just need to know how much of this is even doable:

1) 4 pots sending MIDI signals and (important) an LCD in the middle that gets text from a form on the PC.
I'd use that to label the pots without writing parameters on post-its.

2) Also a ribbon controller and a switch that turns it into either pitch bend or modulation and the pots go between two banks of control messages as well.

3) Also four jacks where I can plug in some piezos in rubber pads or something to trigger drums. If one is plugged in, one of the pots now controls the sensitivity instead. I'd mostly just use this for kicks while I bang on a Wavedrum. Low latency is a priority, precision not really.

This is a semi-stupid question.

So, let's say I was given a big psu, 850W.
My build would max it out at 400-450W at most when gaming.
But I want a silent build.
How long would it last without a fan?

Since new psus are more efficient and don't heat up as much and I would run it at approx. 50% capacity 2-3 hours a day. And rest would be idle/browsing.

It can't be that bad right without a fan right?

i would recommend instead installing a temperature-based fan controller into the psu instead of just hoping it won't blow up

this way the fan will only run as fast as it needs to

Found one of these for cheap, can I use as a low power server?

http://www.samsung.com/us/business/displays/digital-signage-accessories/SBB-B64DV4/ZA
>>
>>58060888
exactly. more efficient power supplies do not produce as much heat and therefore can run without the fan. they are designed to last, so the times when the fan is off, you know it is within a safe limit with regards to reliability.

there is no real reason to go for a higher power psu other than the fact they are typically more efficient and suit the need.

500W would need a verrry efficient psu to run fanless for prolonged periods. but it is possible
>>
>>58060888
You still want a fan
A number of PSUs will leave the fan off to a point, if you're worried about noise you should get one of those
>>
If you were dropped naked on an island with plentiful resources how long would it take to build a PC to modern specs?
>>
>>58060940
but no, do not take out the fan. if a good power supply that runs silently tries to turn on the fan, then it needs it.

Ok I did a bunch of Googling for this but couldn't come up with an answer. Maybe you guys can help. I just picked up a Linksys WRT1200AC router. It works pretty well. However, I noticed an issue when I'm on the 5Ghz band. Whenever my Sony Blu Ray Home Theater system is on my download speeds on the 5Ghz band get cut more than in half. 2.4Ghz works fairly well still. When the Bluray player is off I get my full speeds. I tried everything, Disconnecting it from the network, blocking it's MAC address so it wouldn't rejoin, nothing. So now the device isn't even on my network and it's killing my signal. Do you think it could be wireless interference? I haven't really tried moving the router yet and the router and bluray player are about a foot or so away from one another on my TV stand. There doesn't seem to be any way to disable wireless on the bluray player. It's been driving me nuts. I'm thinking about re-configuring my old router to see if I had the issue on there.

Hi /g/, I've been doing some stress testing to see if my PSU can handle the system.

First I ran Unigine alone and as far as I can see it doesn't use the CPU at all.
So when I ran it at the same time with Prime95 I got about 15% worse score in Unigine.

I've read that sign of an inadequate PSU is bad 3D performance but the GPU didn't throttle down the clocks and kept running 100% stable throughout the whole test so I'm not sure.

My question is, did Prime95 affect the Unigine results or do I need a more wattage PSU?

If someone can run unigine with and without prime95 real quick it would mean a lot.

Today, these borders around my terminals showed up. The only thing I'd touched was lxappearance, and that gave me no options regardless. To add, lxappearance did not immediately change the look of my terminals, nor the new ones I'd opened during that session. I am led to believe, lxappearance had no impact on this happening.

That said, the borders still remain. And around any terminal I use, including yakuake. My i3config is here:

It started recently and was working fine until I upgraded apt. What is that "connection" between the browser and the file manager? And how do I fix it?

On my arch thinpad video playback is so slow that you can sometimes watch frames render to the screen. I first thought this was because it has a 1.6Ghz Pentiumm in it and that the cpu was to slow to play video. Fortunately this is not the case and the cpu is only at %20 load when watching videos . Also videos play fine when the window and video is smaller witch leads me to believe that its a video card issue. Also all the mesa libs are installed im using the xf86-video-ati drivers and the card is a ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 or a ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 but I don't know witch. Doas anyone have any ideas?

well there's a few things you can try at this point:
1. backup firefox config/.profile files and pcmanfm files then reinstall them
or
2. check your distro's forums for anything related to pcmanfm or firefox for anyone with the same problem
or
3. use "strace -o out.log firefox' to log all system calls cut the parts near the end when you do the file selection menu in firefox then strip out any personal info and post the log somewhere we can see
and\or
4. try to narrow down the breaking package by downgrading packages that were upgraded when it broke

Have been trying to get an answer on Full to no avail.

I broke my OS (conflicting repos) and in trying to fix it before a fresh install had to reboot. Upon reboot, my USB keyboard worked in GRUB but not once the os launched. After unsuccessfully troubleshooting that, for some dumbass reason I disabled USB legacy boot. (Don't ask me for the logic behind it, I deserved this.)

So then, of course, my keyboard wouldn't work in grub. "Oh shit, better reset the bios."

Except after trying everything for three days, I learned the difference between BIOS & UEFI.

Now I'm stuck on an "rtc battery low, press f2" screen. (Generic cmos reset, battery is new.) I can't do shit.

What I'm wondering is if I made a liveUSB of a bios update and attempted to flash it, would that override this page and save computer? Or am I sol and having to wait until my replacement internal keyboard arrives?

The boot order is set to USB first but neither of my live Linux sticks work; rtc message comes first.
FYI pressing f2 takes me to bios with the time reset to 2009 but none of the variables i.e. USB legacy, changed. This is from prior experience; I can't press F2 without USB running. Is there some other way of resetting UEFI without a keyboard?

Nah, that's some bollocks.

In reality it depends what you're doing with it. There isn't a very significant difference, but it'll be noticeable if you're doing a lot of video editing I suppose.

I'm not sure it's really worth $200 more on its own. They're actually the exact same processor, just running at different clock speeds

Help? Sure, it is more powerful.

Significantly though? I doubt it. Doesn't the XPS come with integrated graphics though? Gaming isn't something that strikes me as something you should really be doing often.

Honestly an i5 is pretty decent depending on what you're doing with it. It'll handle most things fine. The U series of processors are known for being lower powered for the sake of mobility, but we've reached a point where they're still decent for a large number of purposes

I'm having trouble with my new ps4 slim. it keeps outputting a black screen.

I'm trying hook it up to my 1080p monitor through HDMI, an Asus VS239H-P.

What's weird is, when I plug it into anything else it will work. I tried plugging it into my 1440p monitor through the same hdmi cable and it worked. however, the screen was obviously tiny because of the resolution difference.

What could be the issue? Why is it refusing to display through this particular monitor? It hooks up to my other monitor, and I've switched HDMI cables a couple times, so it isn't faulty cables.

The monitor isn't faulty, either. I use it all the time to play console games on through HDMI and it works fine.

Could use help with OpenVPN

Managed to set up OpenVPN on my DD-WRT router and connect to it from my laptop from mobile network, but can I access my PC that's on my home network?
Do I need to install OpenVPN on the home PC that's already directly connected to the router?
I'd like to use Windows Remote Desktop but it won't connect and I can't detect the 2 PCs

settings are here, I don't understand almost any of this, I just followed a guide and I realise the OpenVPN server is on another network, but i'm wondering if i can route them or something
OpenVPN netowkr is 10.1.1.0 and the home network is 192.168.1.0

WHAT?

I tried OpenVPN a few days ago on an asus router.

>can I access my PC that's on my home network?
Yes. Have you tried pinging it?
>Do I need to install OpenVPN on the home PC that's already directly connected to the router?
No.

Also, what network are you on right now? Is it also 192.168.1.0?

stop using flash like everyone else 10 years ago
>>
>>58070738
>Yes. Have you tried pinging it?
yes, it's timing out

my home PC which I want to connect to is on the 192.168.1.0 network (let's say 192.168.1.5)

my laptop is connected to my phone which is tethering it's mobile network. The laptop is connected to the VPN, I can see it in the connected list and it's been granted address 10.1.1.2
So if I ping 192.168.1.5 from my laptop, it doesn't work

also, pinging the router in that other network works fine, but pinging the laptop on that network doesn't

that's weird, it can't ping itself?
so i'm guessing you can't ping the router on the 192.168.1.0 network either?

That screenshot was from my home PC. I was pinging the VPN network and the laptop's VPN address (10.1.1.2).

This screenshot is from my laptop, I'm pinging my home network (192.168.1.0) and it works fine for the router as you can see, but doesn't work for my pc

What Linux live can I use to format my HD? I can't boot with the win 7 CD because it only boots in legacy mode.

was going to ask about your router config annd if the interface had been setup etc but doesn't matter cuz home router /puke

the ping is probably going through, you're not getting responded to because the device you are pinging is not able to send info back, so look for the config on the .2 device
haven't read everything cuz I'm driving soz

I can't open the installer because Windows 8 doesn't support 7's boot mode. I have to clean my HD without using the Windows CD. I need to boot a tool or a Linux live to empty my HD. What should I use? I can't find anything on Google for this sort of thing

You do therefor you are. If you can't even do then you might not be. If you wish to be then you must first invent the universe.

Easy, just like making an apple pie.

I live in a very shitty house with old as fuck wiring leaving only VDSL as my internet option and it is complete ass. How hard would it be to get some actual internet wires installed in my home so I don't have to deal with this shit?

And by how hard, I meant would I need to tear down any walls to get the wiring installed, would I need to replace the current thing I have there?

I accidentally deleted my Clover pics on Android because my phone is garbage and was running out of storage.

First it broke the folder in the gallery, then it made it dissappear altogether. Now when I try to change the save location on Clover it crashes the app everytime.

I tried a couple apps from the play store but they search too broadly, showing a fuckton of images I still have alongside some of the deleted ones.

What can I do? It's 4.4.2, not rooted cause I've been a lazy fuck.

the hard part is not you rewiring your house. The hard part is convincing a regional ISP to install new wires on the phone poles near you.

Call all of the ISPs around you and ask them about their infrastructure upgrade plans. Be polite, but be annoyingly persistent. It will take you at least 1 year to catch any wind of improvements coming down the line, and at least another year to actually get better internet

80 and 53 are fine, dunno about the other two. how did you get that list?

run "netatat -l -n -p", which will show you which addresses they are listening on and what process they are tied to. It's really fucking important that they're only listening for incoming connections on your local network

well there's syncthing, which replaces all but public access
what you can do for public access is have a machine that syncs just your public folder(s), along with an ftp/http server which points to those folder(s)
