People are generally completely ignorant of the notion that the head and outer ear introduce magnitude response shifts and the idea that interaural time/level differences are the cues for binaural localization.

Sennheiser HD6xx are made in Ireland, at the Sennheiser factory. But tell yourself whatever makes you feel better. :)

Alright no other place where this is really relevant.

I'm looking into getting a DAC/DAP combo.

I'm looking at the Shanling M2 as the most likely candidate.

Requirements:
USB DAC
Large SD card capability.
Build Quality
Around 200-300 dollars.

I'd really like if I could dock it but I think I'll just get a Generic Micro USB dock if I get the Shanling.

Any suggestions?

Shit that was so cheap it wasn't even branded

mostly for vidya (shit like thief 2 with 3d audio on)/music

Top priority for me is getting something with cords that won't break after a few months. no matter what I do they get fucked after a few months and I end up grabbing the cheapest $5 pair the next day
>>
>>58070606
You're going to struggle finding much at that price range. Best option is this:
www.ebay.com/itm/like/Superlux-HD662EVO-Closed-back-Monitoring-Headphones-with-Self-adjusting-Headband/291913732961

A little bit over your budget, but they're comfy, and sound good. They have a removable cable, so instead of buying a whole new headphone, you can just buy a new cable for a couple bucks.

They're from china, so shipping will take a bit, but they're worth it.
>>
Anyone have experience with the newest version of modmic? Think it justifies an extra 20 bucks?
>>
>>58070497
Fucking snakeoil. My Ruizu X02 would sound the same. I tried the Astell & Kern AK240 or whatever it is called and the FiiO X7 or whatever and compared it to my Ruizu.

I'm a sketched by the switch to switch capsules and the extra lump on the cord from the removable cable. I probably wont be getting one.

>they make products not for big headed people

Is that true? I was going to get myself a 598se, but my head is goddamn massive.
>>
>>58070701
Its not snakeoil. There are plenty of reasons to get a more expensive DAP.

Output power and build quality are two major ones.
>>
>>58070748
It's the shape of your head, not size, in my experience. I have had 558's and HD 600's, and I've got a very big head. Both were incredibly comfortable, and were actually quite loose in terms of clamp.

Friends of mine with smaller heads find them to be quite tight for some reason.

Either way, if you can test them out in a store, do it.
>>
>>58070748
Dunno about that guy but I also have a massive head (size 8 fitted) and I still have enough room. The headband has 18 notches on each side and my head uses the first 15 per side.

That's ~120 AUD, so just the same price as the one on Massdrop I mentioned earlier after conversion. Maybe, but maybe a little too steep now that I've checked my finances.
Might be willing to part much more easily with my money though if I know I'll get a good 2-3 years of use out of them before an internal break in the cable or something, as is always the case with IEMs I get.
>>
>>58072486

Sorry, I was going to recommend them straight off, yet had a hunch to check the price and was surprised that they were going for ~$75 US when I bought them earlier in the year for $52 US.

They are really nice, but I'm not sure why they shot up in price so badly. That's why I mentioned shopping around online to see if you could find them cheaper.

I'm looking for some closed headphones. I have this weird thing where I'm super weird about people being able to hear what I'm listening to, it the same with me hating people being able to look over my shoulder at my phone. I was in the Army for a long time and privacy was non-existent in the military, so I appreciate little things like not having to worry about people listening to what I'm listening to.

That said, I want some closed headphones, that are really good about not letting the sound out. Good sound, especially bass. Removable cord is preferred. Not too sure about bluetooth, I've never used it before so I don't know much about it.

I've heard of the Sennheiser Momentums, but never tried them in person. Do they fit what I'm looking for?

Please respond.
>>
>>58072177
There are also Beyer T70/T90/DT1770/DT1990 and ATH 2000x. The truth is there are no cans at this price point that can justify the price premium over HD650. The next logical worthy step beyond HD650 are $1000+ cans of which the cheapest is probably Beyer T1. Just save yourself some dosh and nerves, get the 600/650 and enjoy.

The DT1990 are typical Beyers with very good resolution and soundstage and trebles that make your ears bleed after an hour of listening. Cannot be run balanced. The ATH I haven't used. They seem to be easily accessible in America, but rather hard to come by and Europe and then only at extortionate prices of €900-1000. If you want to set yourself another goal, I'd recommend to look at Focal Elear. They just came out and reviews seem to indicate they're absolutely excellent.

>>58072809
I might just throw in the towel and go for them I guess. Makes sense that the price/performance wouldn't get much better after around $300. I did notice the HD 700s had slightly more clarity than the DT 880s but I see what you're getting at

their treble peak makes beyerfags shudder, their bass is muddy and their distortion is high.

they basically take all the negative aspects of the hd800 and crank them up to 100

or as tyll would describe it:

"In my view, Sennheiser is the world's best headphone maker. Sure, they can screw it up from time to time—the HD 700 was a screeching banshee, and their "Bionetic" offerings many years ago were an awful follow up to gains made with the HD 560 at the time."

They do look very nice but I haven't seen any real reviews yet. I'd grab them for sure if they're worth the price.
I myself had both 880 and 990 and I'm using X2 right now. I find the sound signature sitting somewhere in between those two but more refined on both ends and with nicer bass.

Not sure how to give this. A little tired.

>phase
May also be called the argument.

There are a few ways to show phase.
Phase is how a sinusoid is offset, shifted forward or backward in time.
You could also visualize it as a point on a circle being rotated as the wave goes through a cycle and oscillates. Maybe this pic could help with that.

>its relation to the FR
It's one of two terms that composes the FR. If we had a sample signal like
>|z| * exp (i * angular frequency * time)
|z| would be magnitude, the term in the exponential is the phase (angle).

The transforms that define frequency response don't remove phase and magnitude.

>point me to a place where I can read about it.
Most of the more detailed explanations are all tied up with engineering.

An applet that lets you manipulate tones by frequency, magnitude, argument. Has sound.

A simpler engineering example:

How the FUCK do you guys clean the pads on your headphones?

Sennheiser are fuckers and new pads are obscenely expensive. I'm pretty sure the pads on my HD600's are velour and last time I cleaned them by submerging them in slightly soapy water they went flat and felt shitty like a bathroom towel rather than velour. I ended up just having to replace them because they made the inside of the cup touch my ears.

Am I doing it wrong? I heard some people use an isoproplol alcohol and water mix but this seems like it would be quite harsh, detergent like you'd use in your washing machine also seems sketchy.

Getting a used pair of HD800's today and want to give them a wash without totalling them.

Once you get out of poverty you start to expand into luxury. When you're hanging around real people these things do matter. They make you more approachable and are a status thing to normies.

Flat bass, more upper mid and top end. Not much of a real change in the LCD formula. The general treble isn't boosted to match, which makes the transistion less smooth, but it's not worse in a significant way.
>SZ1
It's more treble recessed than the 009, and closer to the Audezes in that way. It's lacking low end compared to the things like the LCD collection or the 009. As tempted as I would be to call it a lame LCD, Audeze isn't the most dependable reference.

I never went to a college, I make money online since I'm 16. Nothing I said or how I act would imply that I'm a college baby with no real life experience, like you are.

Most products that try to achieve peak performance (especially for a lower price) do not look the best. Most of the high quality headsets look like exactly like what they are; high quality headsets. If you want Aesthetics just continue buying your Skull Candy or Beats by Dr Dre.

Yea, money isn't hard to come by, but being a retard smug anime poster that gets upset that he can't spend 500 instead of 300 dollars on a good headset shows me that you have no idea about money and that you're just spending the money of your parents or not saving any of your 40 hours a week job money. My previous was HD650 (pads currently drying hence them looking retarded). I'm yet to do back to back comparisons but they are a pretty big improvement in my opinion, they sound much more detailed and I dunno, complex? I'm hearing stuff in songs I've never heard before. The sound signiture is similar to the 650 if you messed with the EQ (800's have a lot more bass than I was expecting), but way more clear. They are a better headphone for sure in my opinion but not worth 4x the price.

My first impression was to worry I got a fake, they are almost comically huge. Didn't get HD800S as they are obscenely expensive and apparently not as good for games, I game quite a bit. Retail in my country for these is 1100, I got an ex-display pair from a shop for 660 shipped. More than happy for that price, but I think if I payed 1100 I'd be dissapointed.

>>58077009
Honestly not very, I gather with everything at max headphones should be deafening and these sure aren't. 100 Windows volume is more than loud enough for me if I was drunk or something, I was listening to music earlier at 75 and that's as loud as I'd want them for normal listening. They get just as loud as my 600's really, guess it's because the impedance is the same.

Dunno if I need an amp or not, people say you need an amp for sure if you hear hissing, I heard a tiny bit of hissing in some music but I'm not sure if it was the recording or not. I gather if your amp is total shit they would hiss even when "listening" to silence at max volume (dunno if that's true or not) and they don't. What would be some good stuff to listen to to check they are being driven properly?
>>
>>58077351
did you like the v6's? they're known for having large amounts of treble, so if you like them consider getting bright headphones rather than balanced, in which case have a look at K702 with a dac/amp

Thank you. BTW, what amp/dac if any you used for your HD650? Recently got a pair of HD600 and love them, but at the shop I tried them with OPPO ha-2 and they sounded bit better so I am looking for an amp/dac now.

Looking for some new gaming headphones for Xmas, needs to be something with good sound quality so I can hear people sneaking about in FPS games and a boom mic for using comms with.

I'm not an audiophile but would like something even a newb would be able to tell is a good audio quality.

I guess up to about £200 budget upper limit, I was looking at the Logitech G930 and G933, the 933 is newer but there's load of bad 1 star reviews about bad mic audio quality and them breaking fairly easily.

I don't really need meme lights or macro buttons or whatever, but would prefer the to be wireless if possible. not a lot of options in this space it seems.

I didn't have an amp/dac for my HD650 either, same as now just motherboard output. I dunno how hard HD700's are to drive but I ran a pair of those off my motherboard once and they sounded like shit to me, maybe I just didn't like how they sounded or maybe my motherboard just wasn't up to the task.

660 is britpoor shekels, still a lot of money in the grand scheme of things but a good deal compared to new. I paid 250 for my HD650 2 years ago for comparison.

What are they?
>>
>>58077709
no, they have pretty neutral bass, some people even describe them as having negative bass
V shaped would be something like takstar pro 80 or DT770

as for the charts, there's often a lot of shitposting about which is the best and which are inaccurate and shit so I'll just give you the three main ones

http://www.innerfidelity.com/headphone-measurements
http://graphs.headphone.com/
http://en.goldenears.net/

I personally don't like goldenears, because it seems their headphone measurements have three drastically different charts, so it's hard to compare two, because often the two headphones you want to compare will have different types of graphs, which means (as far as I can tell), you can't simply compare them

>>58077354
>and apparently not as good for games
That's just bullshit. They have a slightly tuned response to reduce the treble peak and higher distortion. The THD increase is likely in no way audible, the treble peak is better tuned with an equalizer. Neither relates to how good they work for games. Really nice price.

>guess it's because the impedance is the same.
It's because of the sensitivity is the same or similar rather. Not because of the impedance.

>What would be some good stuff to listen to to check they are being driven properly?
Anything that you are used to. Indication of not being able to drive them properly is lack of volume, distortion at high volume or hiss.
>>
>>58077900
they are rec for neutral because there's no better option, if there was a good headphone with less treble while still keeping the same amount of bass, it would be recommended instead.

>>58077886
that's like saying you don't want a nigger serving you food. You don't hate niggers, you just don't want them serving you food
>>
>>58077898
I was considering the dt880's too for a while. Still considering but want to see other options.
The left cup on my v6's is producing no sound for some reason. I've tried hitting it. And that doesn't fix it. And I'm too scared to try more invasive procedures.
>>
>>58077931
Could be just a wire, and since you are replacing it anyway you might as well try fixing, it, worst case would be that you still have to buy a new headphone, best case you get your V6 back and still can upgrade from it or not depeding on your mood.
>>
>>58077925

>they are rec for neutral because there's no better option

You are right, and maybe there would not be a better one at that price-range, if they come with a neutralish closed headphone they would tag it for up 200 usd easily. Anyway, they dont have insane amounts of treble.

It almost looks like the v6 is the most balanced of the three. I mean its line moves more in general but also stays closer to the neutral line. That said the 702's look more appealing than the 880's for balance.

>>58077995
I was looking for an upgrade anyway. No harm it trying to fix I guess. Even if it spontaneously combusts it'd still be a fun experiment.

Interesting. I've never used the HD800S and likely never will, so I guess I'll never know. Would be funny though to walk into a HiFi store, rip out a gaming laptop and ask to play CSGO on their demo HD800S'.

They look way cooler than the standard 800 imo, but I'm not about to pay pic related because they look cool. I gather their are mods you can do to make them sound similar to the 800S, dunno if those are bullshit too.

I do hear a bit of hiss with some music. I'm gonna steal my dad's HD558's so I can check if it's the recording or my source.

When I first plugged them in I was super pissed off because they were hissing like crazy. Turns out it was because I unplugged and plugged my mic by accident and Windows decided I wanted mic feedback on and at full volume, lel.
>>
>>58078171
you don't need 'good for gaming' headphones now, especially when CSGO has HRTF audio

but if you're listening for footsteps in CSGO you're garbage tier at the game anyway

I'm about to make the jump from V6s to DT770s
>>
>>58078021
not sure if you know but you selected the 880 not the 770 I was talking about, the 880 is also good and is open like you wanted, but less V shaped, but I doubt you want v shape anyway. They're still slightly v shaped though.

702 is known for high amounts of treble and not a lot of bass

maybe you could have a look at the hifiman 400i, you can get them on amazon for ~250, and around 220 if this sale is still active

http://www.headamp.com/order/hifiman-he400i-planar-magnetic-headphones/
use code. HEADFI10

they're more, but more balanced, I just assumed you wanted something bright like 702 because you liked the v6
>>
>>58078196
Cool, not a bad choice if you want something that isolates better and offers more comfort, sounwise the treble is not that much different, it does have plently more bass though, but that didn't bothered me, i suppose it could disturb someone more purist about how they like headphone signatures though.
>>
How does /mkg/ feel about semi-open headphones?
Is it the worst of both worlds or an ingenious medium?
>>
>>58078259
I like it because you can still hear shit around you, but people can't hear you're listening to japanese "girls" licking your ears unless they're really close

>>
>>58078252
Well I wanted a headphone that was sonically different than the V6s, mainly something that brought out heavy metal, and these are the "Cans of Doom", But I don't want niggerbassed cans.

The other set I was looking at were the T50 Mk3s, but apparently it suffers in the low end.

Anyone use a ModMic with HD800's? (pic related not mine) I have a one, but putting the magnet thing on the mesh when it's so close to the driver is worrying, I'm scared of fucking something up. I have one on my HD650 too but the gap from mesh to driver looks to be further.

This kills me.
I still have to hear shit going on outside, but don't get the benefit of a fully open sound.
>>
>>58078259
Depends on the application really, i know several musicians and engineers who like semi-open because it isolated enough that the sound doesn't leak in the recording but not enought that they can't comunicate with the headphones on.
For personal listening i like them some times, for example, if i want to isolate myself from the world but still hear someone call me or something. I even occasionally listen the Fidelio L2 on the bus from time to time, but overall i preffer open-back at night when it's most silent and closed-back for isolation on the go.

Bare in mind that "semi-open" doesn't say much about the isolation, DT880 is cosidered semi-open and doesn't isolate at all, L2 isolated a lot compared. For studio semi-open the ones i see the most are K240 and K240MKII.
>>
>>58078303
Metal is the exact kind of music i like on the DT770, you will probably be pleased by it, particularly liked Rammstein on them.
I still preffer the DT880 overall, but that's because i generally enjoy more neutral signatures (even though i've being listening a lot to the AD900X, which is pretty bright and bass light).

Sup /g/
A friend bought a cheap headphone tube amp a while back, and we're very impressed with the sound.
Some googling told us replacing the Chinese tubes will improve the sound even further.
Now, would you suggest buying American (General Electric), European (Philips) or Russian (no brand, from 1988) tubes?

Amp in question: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-Lastest-Douk-Audio-Vacuum-6J9-Tube-Headphone-Amplifier-Stereo-USB-DAC-Audio-Preamp-PC-Sound/32740585546.html
>>
>>58078365
I was looking at DT880s, but I'm not in a living situation where I can fully enjoy open headphones, and if they leak a lot I can't comfortably use them.
>>
>>58078394
They don't leak that much, but you will hear everything around you, might well go for a closed-back if you require isolation.
>>
>>58078389
I listen to a lot of drone and stoner metal, and the V6s just seem to bring out the screech, and not the "boom".
Are 770s "woah-dude drop the bass" like m50s?

Also, are the V6s not flat?

Thanks for your help so far.

http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/HiFiMANHE4002014.pdf for reference. That's the flattest freq. response I've ever seen. It doesn't seem to match the headroom graph though where the treble is worrying. I think its a different model though. Threw in the 770's for reference. Both the hifiman's seem to be on the quit side, but uniformly so. I thought those graphs were relative anyway, so what gives?
>>

what you want is as few dips and bumps as possible, everything should be smooth, dt770 has significantly more sub bass, which is good because they're bass heavy headphones so it feels disproportionate if it doesn't have sub bass. the mids and treble are also smoother. The dip at 65 Hz is pretty bad, but M50 has one at 75 so it's not like there's much of a difference in quality there

400i isn't the 400, they're different versions with different sound profiles.

you'll most likely need an amp with the 400i anyway though

>>
>>58078495
My skin is very greasy so that's my main problem. I often leave them on a stand or around my loudspeakers with a piece of paper under the ear cups to absorb some of the oil out. I've washed the pads by simply taking them off and submerging them in warm water + soap mixture. Pressing on the pads with fingers, replacing the water and rinsing. Then leaving the pads to dry for some time before putting them back on.
>>
>>58079058
Good to know they can survive submerging water, I've fucked some up before with just soap and water but maybe the soap I used was too harsh.
>>
>>58079094
I used basic laundry detergent with a light mixture. The microfiber is fine but I think you can bend the plastic its attached to if the water is too hot. Use lukewarm water to avoid any issues. I used the same method for the headband.

Jds Labs the Element or Chord Mojo? I know that one is desktop and another is portable, but lets say I am in, firstly for sound quality and for how good they can drive my HD600. Both will cost same, 400$ for me.

You're trying to get rid of dead skin glued together with dried body oils. Try warm water with a pH-based cleaner added, probably ammonia.

Also, when you get out of the shower, massage a little grape oil onto the area so that your body does not have to excrete it's own. Also, try changing your diet so that you're less oily overall.

Unless your AC is as loud as Concorde at takeoff I doubt you'll care. Open back headphones let in a lot of sound but if it's a constant sound your brain filters it out once you start listening to something else.

I use super open headphones and I always put my GPU fan at 100% when I'm listening to my shitty music so people in other rooms can't hear what I'm listening to. Once you're 10 seconds into a song you can't hear the fans anymore.
