Alright no other place where this is really relevant.

I'm looking into getting a DAC/DAP combo.

I'm looking at the Shanling M2 as the most likely candidate.

Requirements:
USB DAC
Large SD card capability.
Build Quality
Around 200-300 dollars.

I'd really like if I could dock it but I think I'll just get a Generic Micro USB dock if I get the Shanling.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>58082441
so what, you want a DAP that can serve as a DAC at home for your PC?
>>
>>58082566
Yeah basically, more though when I'm using just my laptop so its still really small.

And then I can just pick it up and go on and switch it over to a DAP.
>>
Never buy hifiman, every single hifiman headphone i've owned had a driver issue where low frequencies would make loud buzzing distortions in one or both channels. i RMA'd replacement after replacement until i had gone through 2 pairs of he-500s 3, pairs of he-560s and one pair of he400i, all fucking brand new and all having distortions.

hifiman headphones sound good, but their quality control is fucking garbage.
INb4: if you got a hifiman headphone that's not broken you're one lucky motherfucker, or I'm just the most unlucky fucking your mother
>>
>>58082619
Ive had almost every 'cheaper' hifiman ever made. Never had that issue once. You amp might just be fukt

What would be a good upgrade from a 668b clone (SR850)? I like the sound, especially the strong treble, though I also like the bass.
Been looking at hi2050/Pro 80/hyperx cloud and 7506. Sadly hi2050 doesn't seem to be sold here

Hyperx cloud is selling for 60€, 7506 is selling for "as new" for 69, new for 88.

Looking at the graphs
http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SuperluxHD668B.pdf
http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/TakstarPro80.pdf
http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SonyMDRV6.pdf

I'm kind of afraid pro 80(/cloud) will be lacking in treble and 7506 will be lacking in bass.
I'm leaning more towards the cloud, because even though the mic quality is worse than my ZMMIC, it means I won't have to deal with the double wire tangle anymore.

Are there any others I should look into btw?
There's also the DT770 but that's 60-70 more than the 7506/cloud

HD419, HD558, HD650, HD700 (shit), HD800. Yes I drink the Memeheiser coolaid.

Basically just looking for cheap shit I can treat as disposable or a backup, is there anything at this price point that isn't total garbage? I'd mainly be using them to listen to podcasts or watch YouTube videos and maybe the odd bit of music.

I just want something that will last. £3 earbuds usually sound ok-ish for what I want them for but they just break. I had a pair of Turtle Beaches I used for probably 5 years before they broke and they were around this price. I have a pair of HD419's that I use for a similar purpose but they are too expensive to be disposable imo.
>>

they aren't too good for gaming. Would help if you told us your price range and the type of sound/headphones that you want
>>
>>58084947

>>58084985
Beyerdynamic DT770's are a safe and popular choice. Closed backs generally aren't great for gaming but dt770's get a lot of credit for how decent they are at it. I'd recommend the 80 ohm version. The biggest complaint is that some people find the bass and treble to be fatiguing but I don't. Wearing closed backs for long periods can also make you sick if you aren't used to them, because of the seal around your ear, but thats only for a very small minority
>>
>>58085048
I've been checking around on a few forums and many people are recommending an amp for the DT770's. I'll almost exclusively be listening to them in my room, so should I be worried about that? Otherwise they do seem like a better choice for all-purpose usage.

They're IEMs, so hopefully a nice snug fit.

Neutral, clear sound desired.

Currently looking at these:

Etymotic MC5s - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B003S3RFIQ

And these 2:
ATH-ANC33iS - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00CL3TAOQ/
ATH-ANC23 - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004K09H32/

But what I'm questioning about the Audio Technicas is... what's the difference between the two? The only thing I can find is that the ANC23 has a Y-Cable setup, and I think no mic/device button, but it's somehow more expensive?

Thanks for any suggestions. Something I can get in the next week would be best.
>>
>>58085216
If you get the 80 ohm version you really don't need an amp.
>>
>>58085216
I don't use an amp with them, though you'd probably need one if you listen to your shit at a much higher than average volume. I imagine sound quality difference without an amp is minimal, especially for people like us.

Okay boys, I've got a problem.
My ears stick out and so I require headphones with strong clamping force and probably thin earpads.
Open or closed doesn't matter, but preferably around $300-$400.
I've tried the HD 600s and just now the DT 770 Pros and both are too uncomfortable because my ears will stick out into the inner earpad and touch the lining before the transducer.
What I've been using for about 2 years are the HD 280 Pros, and they fit perfectly with its clamping force and earpads.
If you have a similar problem or know some good headphones that fit this criteria, please respond.

Pretty extreme clamping, combined with the fact that the original pads are not comfortable. Personally, the discomfort kicks in after 4+ hours of straight use, so for short uses it should be fine.

I need to replace a pair of Audio Technica AD-700s that broke. They're out of production now, so do you think I should buy the successor AD-700x or spend an extra $30 and get the AD-900x, or something else? I play games and listen to some music.

Also, how much do you need to spend on a sound card to really step up from onboard audio? The one I'm looking at is $30 but I don't know if it's like a video card where it's an obvious increase in quality the more you spend
>>
>>58087468
What?

>>58087555
Just get 900x, they're a linear upgrade.

Don't bother with cheap sound cards, they aren't better than modern onboard chips, unless your mobo is very old. Only something like Essence STX would be an upgrade. If you want better sound quality, maybe grab a cheap DAC, 900x needs no amplifier.

New HD 650s go for ~320 USD over here, but I saw a pair in a local shop that's bankrupt and selling everything. There wasn't a price sticker on 'em, but I saw some stuff going for 50% off, so I'm guessing the HD 650's will be around 200 USD or something. Now, I'm not an audiophile and I already have a PC 363D, which I've read on some forum is basically a HD 598 with a microphone.
Should I get the HD 650 if the price is good, or would the upgrade be neglible for a pleb with a 'gaming headset'?

If headphones only need tiny little pinhead size connectors where the cable plugs into the actual can, why do they need a fuckhuge 1/4 inch connector on the other end where they meet your source? Is it just an ergonomic choice?

Yes they can be driven off a phone or laptop pretty loudly when playing music but if you use Foobar2000 ReplayGain to volume match all songs then nope you must have a amp because all songs are -dB minus'ed and the volume is not loud enough or if you watch a movie on MPC-HC or VLC video player volume isn't loud enough either. With non-volume matched music it can get loud on phone or laptop.

I have to have the volume slider at like 70-80% to get a decently loud volume level on my Oneplus 3 with my K240's. Is Opus the end of audio codec progress? I mean it's getting close to the point where you can have a typical 4 minute song in great quality at under 1MB. I don't actually know anything about programming or psychoacoustics so what I'm about to say might be really dumb, but it seems to me that we're reaching a point where there's just no more headroom left for compressing audio further, regardless of how much more complex they make the codecs. I mean they're just simply running out of runway.

It's long, but watch it. You'll learn a lot.

The cheapest not shit, actually beefy, prebuilt amp, is probably a CMOY. They're about $60 USD
>>
>>58099779
Not really, no. If it powers your headphones fine, then you really have no issue. Flagships often have pretty good DACs.
>>
>>58099975
Nice. Honestly think these are too good strait from the motherboard. I havent heard anything that compares to the x2 and I ve listened to hd800s through an 1000$ sennheiser amp. Got them for 150$ on sale.
>>
If I get a mic with my open headphones, would the sound leak cause other people I'm talking to hear the leakage? (if on Skype or Discord or whatever)
>>
>>58100117
Nah you'll be fine. No one can hear my K712s or SHP9500s through my blue yeti.
>>
>>58100117
Not unless the volume is loud. I have a vmoda boompro with some 9500's and the only time it'll leak in discord is if I play it really loud. Skype might be different since it's constantly transmitting the mic

anyone got any other options other than the hifiman he-400i?

i heard soundstage was not pretty good and i'm hoping for some really good stuff.

willing to drop some extra cash for a portable DAC/AMP/music player as a combo. :x
>>
>>58100050

Thanks for all the help dude. I'll grab a soldering iron and that first 10 dollar kit.
>>
>>58100225
Sennheiser HD600. Parts are easily replaceable and if you want you can order a pair of HD650 drivers. Ask Hifiman. They will tell you to fuck off and buy another HE-400i. China...
>>
Anyone here own Fostex T50rp mkiii??

Considering getting them as my first planar
>>
>>58099947
>>58099975
How do planars sound at low volume?
Does it get muddy/muffled? I usually listen to stuff at a low volume
>>
>>58100225
>portable DAC/AMP/music player as a combo

I have a Fiio X3 and love it. Being able to use it as a a DAC/amp with my computer is one of the best features. Absolutely blew my mind the first time I used it after listening to onboard audio from a laptop for years.
I've had it for 3 years now and it's not showing any signs of slowing down or even losing much battery life.
>>
>>58100246
No worries. It's a great skillset to have. Just don't cook yaself.
>>
>>58100367
X2's aren't planars lol

planars work fine at low sound levels tho

If you're going to mod, yes. Otherwise I would get HE400i's.
>>
>>58101553
There are plenty of good looking headphones that also sound good, example: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-MSR7GM-SonicPro-High-Resolution-Headphones/dp/B00PEUBIKM/ref=sr_1_2?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1482294699&sr=1-2&keywords=msr7

But headphones with a band logo on them is just cringy if you don't live and breath their music.
>>
>>58101553
>>58101666
>>58101642
Or why not just get the same headphones but without the branding? Are they unavailable or are you just so desperate to be different that you'd buy limited edition headphones for a band that you aren't literally obsessed with?
>>
>>58101666
Well band logo is okay since kids dont even know stones these days, but brand logo to me is absolutely disgusting. I don't even buy laptops with letter logos on the back.
>>58101701
There are the same price and the logo is not big so I guess its ok
Their only songs I like are gimme shelter and paint it black
>>
>>58101642
get the white m50x's
>>
>>58101749
So you're OK wearing the logo of a shitty dadrock band because "kids dont even know stones these days" but not the logo of a highly-respected and high-quality audio company?

>Their only songs I like are gimme shelter and paint it black
I'm just going to drop this right here.

Actually I just want something graphic. It just makes me feel more "personal" without letter logos on my product, but maybe I'm wrong.
>>
>>58101920
If you're really this concerned with the appearance of your $500-$1000 headphones then I would advise you seek advice elsewhere.

And for the record when I said
>But they suck.
I was referring to the Stones, not the headphones. Those like very nice headphones though the 4 star review average would give me pause.

Hope you find whatever you're looking for but please please stop being so concerned about logos and other outward bullshit - sound is what matters so focus on that.

Wasted $60 on Samsung Level U Pro IEMs

E.G. bluetooth garbage. They're not as bad as the last pair of bluetooth trash I wasted money on. They're just utterly non-musical, analytical without being transparent, slooooow, and require aftermarket tip replacements (currently using Shure Olives) to be usable at all.

If there is any substance to the UHQA BT thing, they might be passably decent paired with a Samsung device. But I sort've doubt it.

Turtle beach mostly. Have used gaming headphones all of my life, but since the recent purchase of my studio mic, I'm looking for audiophile quality headphones to match. I'm going in fresh to this sort of thing, so my past likes and dislikes don't really apply here. So far I kind like the Sennheiser HD 598...

For Xbox One and gym use, nothing fancy.

I got pic related and they're alright. Any other suggestions? Preferably available on amazon bc of return policy.

sorry for no replies man. Are you dead set on neutral or just said that because you aren't familiar with the phrases? Sennheiser 598 are a little on the bright side meaning they emphasize high pitch notes, and they also tone down low notes which means less bass. That said, its usually described as neutral in reviews. Also, you asked for a closed headphone and the 598's are open
>>
>>58103300
Yup, unfamiliar with the differences. Not dead set on neutral, that's just really all I know. That makes sense though...Yeah, I noticed that about a minute after posting. I would still prefer the closed style.
>>

It'll probably be a mix of both music and gaming. As far as a music genre, J-rock and Vocaloid. Will be doing a bit of recording as well, no mixing I think...
>>
>>58103406
SPH9500
>>
>>58103415
DT 770's are popular a popular choice at that price range. They're closed back, do most music well, and are good (for a closed back) with gaming. Though I'm only giving this as a popular choice because idk shit about those genres or recording, so I'd recommend asking again when the new thread is made.

slow is a real descriptor

the other two i can agree thou
>>
>>58103538
So what kind of response makes an impression of slow? Lots of bass?
>>
>>58103556
Decay. Its kind of a synonym.
>>
>>58103576
Please don't say you mean CSD graphs because you do not hear that. It's a stupid term because speed is indeed part of the response and shown it is shown in the FR plot already: just look at how high the response extends.
