They are forcing their agenda on people in the thread, despite a large number not even using gnu for their userland

It's been a very long back and forth thing with it being linux thread vs gnu/linux thread. Just keep it as gnu/linux thread.

This is a Linux thread, everything we talk about pertains to the linux Linux and operating system.
You can talk about gnu within the thread the same as you can busybox, qclibc, and malloc and any issues, grivences, support would still be valid as you are using Linux.
>>

You're wrong, pal. This is a GNU/Linux thread, it says it right there in the thread title. Feel free to create an alpine or "Just Linux" thread if you want.

Been trying to install gentoo for a while now, just for the heck of it. I've had several attempts that resulted in botched installations that I just gave up on, and one attempt where I completed the installation with zero problems and even installed xorg, but decided I was done because I was tired of compiling everything

Now I really want to install it on my laptop, but unfortunately my laptop's AMD card is fairly new and incompatible with the open-source drivers amdgpu and radeonsi (just gives me a black screen on every distro).

I know for a fact that the proprietary driver package (flgrx/Catalyst) works just fine, but is no longer supported/maintained by AMD and therefore no longer easy to install on any Linux distro.

My question is, can someone point me to a recent (2016) resource that will help me install a desktop Gentoo system with the flgrx drivers, and lays out the information with as little headache as possible?

Even better, has anyone else been in my situation, and how to resolve?

I don't think you're supposed to touch /bin. Why not just make a temporary directory anywhere on your SSD like say the root directory, git the source, compile, and run make install? Delete the folder when you're done.
>>
>>58052139
>>58052164
Make a "bin" folder in your ~/bin and put it in your path. You can do this for standalone programs easily, or scripts you make. But you should do the compiling and building within your package manager instead of doing it ouside of it where your system cant keep track of it

You have my permission to use Linux. But only under one circumstance. namely, you can't use BSD on your hardware. Just try it out, you'll love it my man. It respects your anti-communist views, Linux doesn't.
Get rid of the firmware blobs you don't need though if you are in the US or EU. If you are anywhere else it shouldn't matter since the local guys probably don't have access to the backdoors in that firmware.

Little problem here. Too many ways to solve it.

I'm running a remote machine with a desktop on Arch Linux. For some reason, sometime a process (maybe midori, firefox or thunderbird) goes wild and renders the system unresponsible. It takes some minutes of patience to get a shell session and type a command to kill those processes.

My aim is to configure the system, that no process can produce such high load (load average of 30 on 2 cores is definitely to high)

So what could I use? ulimit? cgroups?
I never had to solve such resource problems

And I'm my memory serves me right that happened to me on a different distro a few years ago.

It needs to be on USB flash drive and run from RAM, with minimal resources.
I was looking at qemu puppy, how's that?

The only issue I'm having is the packages.
I'm leaning towards puppy linux since at every shutdown, it gives you the option if you want to save your session.
Which is helpful if you want to run clean slate at every boot.
>>
>>58061278
you can run any distro from ram with a simple initramfs and shutdown hook
that is, have the initramfs copy the root filesystem into a tmpfs mount, then copy/rsync it back to persistent storage upon shutdown

I tried doing that with net debian, things didn't go as planned and spent 3 days trying to fix things, and ended up creating a frandebian.
So I reverted to using a puppy linux/slax.
The only issue is like I said the packages.
I have no issue building from source, the issue is it defeat the distro design.

Hey Im cool with the fglt threads but can we stop using Richard as the picture's post?

Linux is great. Ubuntu is great. But we need to push Linux to be more responsive. Webkit and Git were some of the best contributions out of Linux outside the realm of the immediate OS. But I feel like every GNU project I see outside of Ubuntu is a whitewash of someone reinventing the wheel rather than coming along for the ride to make better mobile-first/single page apps.

Also....Binaries... Need to be universal.

How about we redesign this for the OS'es using it so that it looks more like a modern app store., with featured or popular previewed.

After I get back from AFK I'll take a peak at the software managers code and see if it is even remotely feasible to rework it, then do a fork.
>>58061790
Sounds good.

Does anyone know of a distribution built for containerizing apps?
My goal is to use VMs like digitalocean to create a single platform on which to divide even further. For example, run a Mattermost chat server, then a web server, Web IDE, and onlyOffice all one one single $5 VM, and have them run off their normal ports. The end goal would be to not have to dick around with interfaces, ports, adding extra IP spaces, and have it all run off one DNS alias or a single IP (maybe this is Docker but I envision multiple hosts rather than single). This would be for 1-3 people using it daily.

You can ask 'what does that mean exactly?'.
You dont have to speak in memes.
It probably means you can use the command line.
You should also be willing to read and learn stuff. If you dont know much at all to begin with, and learn everything mostly from scratch from the wiki and manpages, that'll feel really slow and like a big pain in the ass, but if you're already have rudimentary knowledge and a baseline familiarity with linux and cli stuff, its pretty smooth and easy.
If you just want the AUR you dont need any experience to use antergos or something.

>>
>>58063070

/fglt/ is not one person

from an honest debian user - if you're going to use anything other than stable, just use ubuntu.
>>
>>58063428
Why?
>>
>>58063449
ubuntu is "debian testing mad suited for desktop use"
>>
>>58063477
I was hoping I could avoid Canonical, though.

Couldn't I get what I need for desktop use through simply installing the extra programs I'd need after the netinstall, and that's that?
>>
>>58063477
>ubuntu is "debian testing mad suited for desktop use"
would there be any difference at all if you're using a WM from a netinst rather than a DE?
>>
>>58063498
You have no clue about the differences between and relationship debian and ubuntu has but somehow you're full of prejudice against Canonical.
May I just say that it's ridiculous?

Thing you have to consider is the policy towards security patches.
Debian sid and testing do not get security patches. None at all because security is not the goal of those two branches.

Debian does not come with many security features by defaul (like AppArmor)
It's a deliberate design decision of course, not it's devs being inept.
Debian developers expect the user to be able to secure his installation by himself.

And (the most useful from desktop user pov) ubuntu has PPA support.

Debian is an extremely useful distribution.
It runs on everything, it's stable, it's repositories are large and documentation is "good enough" (could be better).
And for all the use cases where debian shines it shines because of the stable branch.

If you're going to use testing/sid just use ubuntu.

I'm saying that as a debian user (both server and desktop).
>>
>>58063655
It's worth to point that debian is one of the few distros that got the balance between sucking FSF's greasy, unwashed cock and not saying "fuck the users lmao" just right.

Regular installation does not ship with binary kernel blobs.
But you can still install them in a whim
>>
>>58063401
Debian Sid is cutting edge rolling upstream, not distro specific patching or bugfixes. Stuff that didn't break goes into Debian testing which is perfect for desktop use. Stable is perfect for servers that need to run for the next 1000 years, bad for desktop use, since you usually want fresh packages.
>>
>>58063738
>bad for desktop use, since you usually want fresh packages.
That's really a mindset i do not understand.

If everything works what's the point of upgrading?
>>
>>58063755
because a lot of stuff doesn't work without the latest thing

it's an incredible pain trying to navigate a 'stable' distro if you want to use a lot of applications

stability is only useful for production environments where you want a standard system that doesn't change or fuck up in any way
>>
>>58063655
Why recommending Ubuntu over Debian? Canonical is absolute cancer, leeching from the community, giving nothing back and they made spyware on Linux distros a thing. Fuck that shit. If a user isn't completly new, there's no reason to use Ubuntu over Debian.

I'm sorry if the question is silly, but I suppose I should ask here just in case someone's kind enough to answer

On a fresh Debian install for a desktop/laptop, what are the basic security measures I should implement right off the bat?

Adding to this, what are some particular precautions I should take when taking my Debian laptop to a public Wi-Fi place? I mean OS/Firewall related things, apart from browser side things like HTTPS Everywhere and all that. Is it true that UFW is pretty much it or is that preposterous?
>>
>>58063854
>I wouldn't call it plain spyware
what they call "service", I'd call "disservice"

>>

if you used openrc on gentoo there's literally nothing of worth for you to look for in funtoo

Nothing wrong with that, Funtoo is fine it's has neat features like epro and networking is much better

>>
>>58067914

I dont think groups can be 'turned off', but you should just add yourself to everything so you dont have to again if this is appening to you.
