Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

T460 or T460s?

I'd get a T450s but they cost as much as a T460/s.

Worth waiting for T470/s or will they just get progressively worse?
>>
Hi anons I asked you before but I have got one more question: I have only integrated graphics in my T420 so should I do anything special to get egpu working? (like downgrading BIOS, I use 1.48) and can you post your specs and some information about game (how they run or something like this)

I work as a computer technician for a small refurbishing company. We only work with business laptops and computers.

Lenovo Thinkpads are incredible to work with, very nicely built and can stand the test of time (We still have working T41's, back when they were IBM and not Lenovo.)

I have a T430 for myself with a 250 GB SSD. Thing runs like a dream still.

If you care size T460s is much nicer than plain T460.

You can still access M.2, single DIMM slot, mini PCIe and batteries if you remove the T460s back cover.

I'm in Canada and I'm looking for a new laptop for college, it will be used exclusively for hammering out lots and lots of essays and reports, mainly Politics and Economics type stuff, so multiple Office Word files, Excel files and PowerPoint, plus 2-3 Chrome windows with lots of tabs.

My budget is about $1500 CAD, or $1150 USD ish.

I am looking for a 15.6 screen, 1080p, and a full size keyboard with the numeric keypad would be nice, but it is not explicitly required.

I have looked into the Lenovo Thinkpad T460/S/P/560, and the Ideapad 700's. I was wondering if any of these would be fine, and what sort of specs should I be aiming for?

I would prefer something with an i5, and 8gb of RAM at minimum, don't have a need for dedicated graphics, so something thin and light is probably possible.

Wanted to know which of the Lenovo's you guys would recommend for my uses.

>>58001599
expresscard will be easier to swap and there's been talk about recent nvidia drivers not playing well with mpcie (express isn't affected)

cards like the 750/950/1050 seem to be a good balance between price and enough power that's not totally wasted by bandwidth limitations. a slot-powered card will keep things a little more tidy on the desk and your psu can be smaller. i use a dell da-2 psu, which is overkill for my 750ti, but i trust the 8-pin more than the standard barrel connector, and it looks a lot nicer than an atx psu

i'd like to see the price for the low profile msi 1050ti when it's readily available. one of those paired with an exp gdc beast v8 would be a damn small egpu setup, almost portable!

You probably would've benefited more from adding an SSD than upgrading to a quad core if your system was feeling sluggish overall. Outside of highly demanding multithreaded workloads, there shouldn't be anything that really taxes a dual core i5. But a spinning rust drive can make even the simplest tasks take ages.
>>
>>58001914
and whatabout those two options while using it with internal display ? i want that little beast for occasional lan parties, and if id have to take monitor, i can already take whole desktop

Using the internal display with eGPU results in massive tearing and somewhat lower performance. I've read that cutting edge drivers and X.org reduce tearing but haven't tried it. Might work better with Windows.

You might get away with borrowing some of your friends' second display.

>>
>>58002001
i spent like 20 minutes fucking with the positioning of everything on my desk before i was happy. the da-2 psu helped a lot because its got a nice long wire to the brick, which stays on the floor. gpu is on the desk behind monitor and thinkpad. the PE4C v3 has a very short and thick cable that's soldered on, so a lot of my positioning was to keep tension off it. the exp gdc cable is a few inches longer and a lot more flexible, so it should be a lot easier to work with. there's been some discussion over which adapter has more reliable data transfer based on the quality of their cable connections, but that's beyond my knowledge.

>>58002046
nvidia cards and their optimus feature are the way to go if you want to use the internal screen. of course there's a dip in performance vs using an external screen off the gpu itself. my experience with the 750ti and overwatch with high gfx settings: internal screen, 40ish fps, so i locked it to 30. external screen, 60 fps
>>
>>58000901

>>

so internal display with egpu is no-go.

then I may end up with portable screen, i have some old 14" msi laptop with fryed mobo somewhere at home. I will buy controller for that display, and hopefully i can power that screen with psu used for egpu.

The whole point is to pack whole lan equipment in one backpack. So I can take taxi.

x240 vs t430? They are rougly the same price, t430 comes with an ssd and 4Gb of ram, x240 with $gb of ram and a spinny, and the screen is the HD one. x240 is tempting because it's super light, and I'll be taking the computer to university everyday. To make or to buy an already completed one? Building one yourself will cost ~$400 total, more if you go for 8gb RAM, a big SSD, or accessories like the advanced dock. Buying outright will cost more, I think I saw a listing for one that was around $600-700 a while ago. It might be worth taking anyway though, just because of how rare the Flexview T60s have become.

The stock 1024x768 TN panel won't work properly with a T61 board. There's also no reason to do the mod if you have that panel, just use your T61 as it is.

You can use a "compatible" SXGA+ or UXGA TN panel if you can find one for cheap, but those panels really suck. You get the resolution, sure, but the colors and viewing angles make the stock TN panel look good. Not really worth paying for unless you're desperate.

Belgium. I was just hoping I could bid on some auctions and get closer to the 120 dollar mark from the guide as opposed to the 190 dollar upper cost, but very few auctions I've seen ever go that low, and even then I get fucked over by shipping costs most of the time. I really wonder how it is that shipping a thinkpad from Finland is cheaper than one from Germany or France, which are about a 4-6 hour's drive from my door on good days.

I've also got to admit that I kind of dig the looks of elitebooks/latitudes. The thinkspads look neat with their all-black housing, but the I'm also a fan of the aluminium case on the elitebooks and whatever it is that the latitudes have got going. Not that looks are going to make me decide between one or the other, but I like them all.

Why not do a clean install? Just back up your games/documents and get the drivers from the lenovo website. The process should take you less than 2 hours.
And if you already have Win7 on an SSD why would you transfer it to mSATA? SATA does 6 gb/s, mSATA does 3. Get the mSATA for the triple drive setup, but use it for other stuff.

do you have that problem? if my laptop were to fall the hard drive failing is the least of my concerns. im not shitting on you for having ssd, its your choice. Just curious as to the why, I have a 30gb msata and ill have something in the bay either another 64gb ssd i already had or nothing else, I don't keep files on my computer just in case. I usually have a external hd.

With a thinkpad? The whole thing will be nice, but the HDD will be worrisome.
Am I the only one who throws my X220 around because it's faster?

Perhaps not the best thread to ask, but has there ever been another laptop with a Wacom tablet integrated in the palm rest other than the W700? I think it'd be pretty cool, but W700 is a bit too much laptop for me. I'd even take one completely replacing the touchpad.
>>
Can I upgrade my thinkpad t520 to an Nvidia card? If so, should I get a Nvidia card or an FHD screen?

X series tablets have a giant wacom pad. The entire screen in fact.

Sure, but I'd like to try out the palm rest version. Not just for the novelty: with swivel-screen tablets the keyboard isn't available when in drawing mode, and I don't want to get or plug in a separate keyboard for when I'm doing art.

You can, but it's not much better than the integrated. Go for the 1080p screen first.

The E6420/E6430 are pretty good. Not all model have the clit, and the keyboard is different from the T420, but its still significantly better than the island hunt and peck shits, No mSata support though, but you can chuck another drive into the DVD slot with a cradle

Hey guys, I bought this from exactly the same company this Xmas for £195 - feel I should have checked the resolution - how much is a 900px monitor for this baby?

I have a Thinkpad T440p with a 9 cell battery that is not even 2 years old, but it's already unable to hold more than 2 hours of charge when doing office stuff on power saver and screen brightness all the way down

I thought that Thinkpad batteries are able to survive for much longer since this was supposed to hold 8 hours of charge to begin with

Without knowing anything I would tell you to do a windows reinstall and install the proper drivers from lenovo and fuck around with the energy settings. You have one of the longest lasting laptops in the world on a single charge, something ain't right.

I have Winshit 10 and the Lenovo power manager doesn't work with it, but I have the power management drivers installed
>>
>>58021360
I had a problem for a while that the computer would get super hot, battery wouldn't last very long. Me being an idiot having never fooled properly with energy management for laptops figured out that basically I didn't allow the CPU to throttle and it made it run hot all the time AND use more battery.

So I suggest you try fucking around with the energy settings on a fresh install. Why a fresh install? Because I don't know what you got on your laptop and it is simply the weakest link in the troubleshooting process. I'd even tell you to try it with Win7 if it is possible/doable for you simply because you can't control what Win10 is doing, the OS itself could be the cause of your problems.
>>
>>58014526
I feel bad for you, keep on looking. I got my W500 for $150 CAD and I love it.
>>
>>58021408
It throttles like a bitch actually and I have to kill half of processes so that it won't lag like a piece of shit when it does that

Also if I install the software in a VM, I'll be able to see the battery info right
>>
>>58021547
>It throttles like a bitch actually and I have to kill half of processes so that it won't lag like a piece of shit when it does that

That tells me you need to fuck around with your energy settings, if it is so slow that you can't do what you need then it's throttling is going too low, but its shit like that which allows you to have a long lasting battery.

>Also if I install the software in a VM, I'll be able to see the battery info right

I don't know. Are you seriously running VMs while on battery? What are you running I'm curious.
>>
>>58021608
Haha no
I run VM only when I have power plugged in and when I do run a VM it's usually a WinXP VM for compatibility reasons

It's part of a feature that allowed the computer to be used as a CD player while it was turned off. However it required special software on a separate partition to function so all it does now is display battery level, power, and charging status.

Sup fa/g/s,
I'm upgrading my T420:

7800mAh battery (current battery is pretty dead)
90W PSU adapter (I need this for the i7)
Qwerty US keyboard (came with espanol)
Alienware 1600x900 matte display
HD+ cable (needed because currently it's 1366x768)
16GB(2x8) 1600Mhz RAM
i7 7260QM 2.2(3.3)Ghz
Intel 7260 AC wifi (still had one of these laying around)
256GB 850Pro
Ultrabay Adapter for adding hotswap hdds to the system

Is this officially the most balling T420N0SC0P3?
Am I missing anything? What else is there left to upgrade aside from a second wifi card or miniPCIE ssd...
