IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Where did it go so wrong?
>>
>>57961404
Around 2010 when the T510 came out.
>>
T410 users (on Linux): did you manage to get an external mic working with it?

It has that shitty dual jack port and whenever I plug in my mic, it detects it as headphones. I tried some hdarejack utility, but it didn't work (wouldn't let me disable the headphone jack or make it be the mic jack). Is there really no way but to shill out money and import one of those shitty adapters?
>>
>>57962071
no way the T510 is the best thinkpad there is
>>
>>57962172
Sorry, but it's when they introduced 16:9 and began compromising.
>>
>>57962185
What I don't understand is the that Lenovo has always marketed the T/X series as premium laptops yet put absolute shit screens in them.

It can't be that more expensive to ask for custom 16:10 or 3:2 panels, at the volume that the T/X series sells at it must be an extra $15-20.

Uh so the screen cover on my T420 is a bit loose on one side, it won't stick to the frame properly. Hasn't really affected functionality so I haven't minded much. But now I've noticed that side has started getting warm for some reason. I'm assuming this can't be very good. The wiring must be fucked somehow. The left side of the screen is perfectly cool

Need your opinion, lads.

Is the X220 too small as the main and only computer? No external monitors or anything.
>>
>>57964829

Hey guys, so i'm thinking about buying a ThinkPad, i use arch linux with a riced i3wm, but i don't know if it is worth it buying a T430 to replace my Lenovo G580 (it is working well but i need some more performance and a better build quality), if it isn't, what model should i go for then? i'm looking for some portability (looking for 14" screen, can be normal size or ultraportable), performance (i plan on playing some games from steam and watching my animes, so i guess a nice screen would be cool and a good heat dissipation method would be nice, which makes me not so sure about ultraportables) and compatibility with a nice dock to use with multi monitors and external hard drives.
>>
>>57964829
if its too small get a biger one like mentioned if you want it anyway get a monitor or a dock and monitor/monitors you can get the IBM / lenovo ones cheap too
>>
>>57961258
So long story short I'm a homeless but some nigger (yes literal) stole my dell latitude. Now I'm in the market for a new laptop which ThinkPad is obviously what I'm going to buy - my budget would be less then $600 so far the model I like is the lenovo thinkpad 13 (silver model) is that a good one?

Well this goes into a bunch of things but yes I know who this person is but he's a dangerous thug. Play stupid game get stupid prizes (in the sense of myself) I should've never cooped myself up with such persons and not suspected this nature.

For more reference the night it happened I had one black girl dancing on my mat, explain to her this is not her mat, she yells at me so I retrieve the staff to tell her ya this isn't your mat. She actually listens to them and says 'oh', but of course side stepping the fact that she initially harassed me when politely telling her to get her bare feet, dancing self off my mat. Then my backpack with all my stuff is missing out of my bin, no shorter then realizing this a vicious assault between two individuals occurs. One is knocked unconscious with blood everywhere. Then yet another person is walking out of the shelter with multiple backpacks that aren't his (one being mine). ------ Every person involved in this story is black but I presumed that was easily inferred based on the behavior.

Became homeless about three months ago because of family tired of my autistic neetdom.

I'm getting a case manager tonight to help me replace all my identification so I can get a job and get this thinkpad. I wish it wasn't so but it is. I'm strong though I'm surviving and replacing my stuff with better stuff.

And through being homeless I became much more passionate about programming. I had been programming for about one month prior to my shit being stolen but I had wrote a robot taht applied to jobs for me, an irc chat robot, and was making very steady progress on a bit torrent client. I'll be back programming really soon - and actually as typing this I'm on a public library computer solving some online programming challenges through an online ide and ocmpiler.

I used Opera earlier, then I switched to this

Higher resolution just offers a bit more space, unless you scale down every program manually, if it even lets you do that. Like your web browser, or an IDE. But then the text looks a bit grainy when you make it smaller on this resolution
>>
>>57966704
i like alot of things about opera, like the speed and the built in ad blocker which was top notch. but it lacks in a lot of features.

as for resolution, i dont get peoples issue. im on my x220 and everything is o-tay. if you want higher resolutions plug your laptop into a separate screen, buy a dektop or be a mobilefag.

That kinda defeats the purpose of a portable computer. I mean I can live with it, but it definitely feels a bit cramped with some things. Thinkpads were designed for working comfortably, low resolution hampers it

Picked up a T420 as an Xmas gift to myself for £195 - second hand. Specs are:
Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core
8gb RAM
64gb Kingston SSD
14" display (1366 x 768)
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (UK English)

Hard-disk is tiny and the lack of display resolution is a bit annoying but I only need it to some web development on really. Possibly a bit overpriced?

What's the first thing I should do once it arrives?

Anyone here have a T560? My company just issued me one, the 1080p screen is a huge upgrade over the 1366x768 shit on my older T540p and I am fucking thankful to have the TrackPoint buttons back. Overall the laptop seems really damn decent, except for the screen. The resolution is fantastic and the viewing angles are not bad, but the colour seems horribly inaccurate. Everything has a green tinge and the basic Windows 2000-ish blue background looks like Windows 95 teal. I have a W520 at home which sort of spoils me as far as colour accuracy goes, but I don't remember even the dogshit panel on the T540p being this bad.

Is this a common T560 complaint? Should I bother requesting a new unit? I don't do any graphic work but the screen is literally triggering me.

What is the consensus on the x260

I'm looking at getting the FHD version with the 6 cell 7Wh battery because I need all the charge I can get. I have a X260. For battery life, it's pretty damn good. A full charge with the larger battery can get me 17+ hours while doing stuff like browsing with the brightness set just a bit below max, but I haven't paid enough attention though. Lasts for quite a while either way. The faults mentioned by the other guy kinda blow, but I prioritized battery power over everything else, so yeah.

The FHD screen quality is a crapshoot though. It can range from absolute shit to slightly above mediocre, but it's good enough for what it is. The previous poster also forgot to mention the fact that it only has 1 slot of RAM, which means 16 GB max and single channel only. Luckily, it's DDR4 and not DDR3L so 16 GB isn't too expensive.

What's the best choice when it comes to current Thinkpads? I have a T420 and it's just too slow for me. I want a very fast, new laptop, not necessarily with a dedicated GPU but it would be a nice bonus. Priorities are performance, quality and battery life, not so much weight or size. Im trying to decipher Lenovos incrompehensible lineup, and im currently looking at the X1 Carbon, T460s, T460p or P50. I hate how much you pay extra for the same specs with these models. Is the premium still worth it with Thinkpads? Are there any non-lenovo alternatives worth looking at? Is the current point in time extremely bad for buying laptops or is waitfagging for Kaby Lake pointless?

P50 is far and away the strongest of those four. P70 is even stronger if you can handle a 17 incher. That said, I'm having a hard time imagining what sort of workload is too much for your T420. Mostly the bloated intelliJ IDE and the docker server i have to use for work. It keeps the cores topped out at 100% and makes things very slow. I know that all of this software is shit but i don't have a choice.

>>57973072
How is the P50 build wise? I like a lot that it has a numpad and dedicated volume buttons. How's the screen, and what version do you recommend / which one do you have? Can you expand with more SSDs? Does linux fare well with M.2 PCIe SSDs? How's the battery life?
>corporate discount
I would get it cheaper with the Lenovo Campus program
>>
>>57962367
They spend 90% of their life in a docking station.
>>
>>57973126
>How is the P50 buildwise?
Bulid is really solid. About 0.75 inches thick, but pretty sturdy. Nothing flimsy that I can tell from using it.
>How's the screen
I just opted for the cheapest 1080p screen, I don't need an insane screen. It's fine. There can be a tiny diagonal screen tearing, but that was only with Ubuntu liveusb, so I don't know whether it's just an Ubuntu thing or a linux driver thing. No tearing in Windows 10.
>SSDs?
1 slot for a regular sized HDD or SSD and 2 M.2 PCIe slots.
>Does linux fare well with M.2 PCIe SSDs?
I don't have any M.2 SSDs, and I haven't finished setting up linux because of school, but I'll do it later.

>>

>>
>>57973373
Very good. 8-10 hours regular browsing and whatnot, depending on brightness and power settings. Obviously running high intesity applications not so much (maybe 3-4 hours), but it does charge back up pretty fast.
>>
>>57973126
I'd reckon you could solve your problems much more cheaply by just getting a quadcore i7 for your T420. That's just a guess though, if you'd rather be certain and you have the cash to burn, go ahead and buy a P50.
>>
>>57973427
That's a lot more than i expected. According to your picture you have the model with the Xeon. Doesn't that thing have no own integrated GPU, unlike the Core i* models? I thought the Quadro has to be always on in that case.

>>57973495
Is that possible? Do you mean the sandy lake quadcore that was originally available for the T420, or some sort of T430 cross-upgrade?
>>
>>57973567
It wasn't ever offered stock in the T420, but you can swap in a quadcore Sandy Bridge i7 with minimal effort. Most people around here opt for the 2720qm, since the cooling in the T420 has a hard time handling the higher-clocked models. I haven't done it myself, but I have a W520 with the 2720qm and can attest to the increase in power over a 2520m T420.

New to this Thinkpad business. How fast do you guys keep your clit mouse?
>>
>>57963592
>>57963467
>>57961404

Screen ratio?

What I see is that they managed to use a full sized keyboard instead of one constrained by space. Also added a trackpad which is always useful, not everybody fucks around with their clit all the time.
>>
>>57973126
I also have the P50.

My configuration is 6820HQ, 64GB of RAM, 256GB Samsung OEM SSD, 4K display.

The lower section is built solidly, comparable to most older Thinkpads. No real problems there. Keyboard sucks, but we all know about this. Numpad is good to have and the asymmetry doesn't bother me.

The upper lid is very weak and flexible due to the lack of any reinforcement (the LCD housing is just a thin fiberglass composite board). This is how they got the thickness down. If any pressure is applied to the back of the LCD (say, from books in a backpack) the LCD will be compressed against the keyboard/trackpoint, leading to the formation of white spots/blemishes. If this happens, Lenovo will replace it without a problem, but it's a design problem they apparently don't care about fixing.

The 4K LCD is good, not great quality. Viewing angle color consistency is below-average for an IPS screen, but not bad enough to be a problem.

I only use Windows so I can't say anything about Linux compatibility.

Battery life is about 2-3 hours under consistent load. Not sure what it would be if you weren't stressing it.

>>57973567
The Xeons are identical to the i-series except ECC memory support is enabled and there are some different clock speeds available. They have the same IGPs.
>>

>>
>>57973935

That sounds fucking horrible. My Laptop is constantly in a backpack, does the replacement only apply within the warranty? That sounds almost worthy of a recall.
>Battery life is about 2-3 hours under consistent load
Sounds a bit more in line with the specs of that thing.

I really don't know. I feel like im paying a ton of money for things i don't need with the P50, from the Xeon to the Quadro to the color verification stuff and so on, and that's plus the already pretty hefty Thinkpad tax. The T460p isn't all that great either, i've heard the screen is shit and buying something with a GTX 900 series GPU right now when the GTX 1000 series just released and made such a large performance leap just feels dumb. Additionally, they actually might announce the Retro thinkpad at CES 2017 in January, and the X1 Carbon with Kaby lake is already leaked. I think waiting really is the best choice, but it hurts so much since i have to spend more money this year for my fucking taxes.

>That sounds fucking horrible. My Laptop is constantly in a backpack, does the replacement only apply within the warranty? That sounds almost worthy of a recall.
It applies to most Thinkpads w/o a touch screen since the *40 series redesign, not really a P50-specific issue. Maybe more notable here since P50's durability has been hyped. I don't think they will help you past the warranty period, but they are very efficient during it.

Thank you. Did you also update the ME firmware by any chance? I'm asking because some people who updated their x201 BIOS suffered from a MEBx error message after the update, and the ME firmware update might be fixing it (though it's probably best avoided as it also seems to extend the botnet features of ME/AMT, such as add "provisioning" over wireless LAN).

Btw a sightly newer main BIOS version (1.40-1.15/1.15 from 2013/06/21) seems to exist, the changes being "Embedded controller update will modify battery charge algorithms to balance battery charging and lifespan".

BE HONEST

How usable are old Thinkpads like the X61, X200, X201? Real world usage and not installing some lightweight Linux distro and then coding in a text editor.

I just want to browse the web and watch youtube videos in 720p. But even on a modern laptop some sites load slowly because they are full with interactive menu elements, embedded videos and images.

my T43 (lol) runs fine but the fan randomly starts making loud noises and restarting reports a fan error, letting it sit for a few hours seems to fix it though curiously the cpu doesn't seem to heat up when the noise starts, am i looking at a failing fan or BIOS issues? running tahrpuppy btw

You'd be surprised. I've picked up a t40, t400, t410, x60, t60, iMac, all for less than 50 bucks a piece at this one. Great stuff! My goodwill always has new computers in. They even had a large stack of PS1/2's the other day. 3 macs from the 80's, and a multitude of thinkpads. (Older ones that is)

What's with this shitty battery life? I have a t420 and acpi reports about 4 hours, even on lower brightness. I am using the 55++ (6 cell, right?) battery, and my conditions are ssh sessions and firefox tabs. acpi -bi reports 84% battery health, would another of the same battery give me a good amount of battery life, or is the 9 cell the better option?

The GPU stays on the desk attached to the monitor. The CPU bottlenecking won't be horrible. Use expresscard with T420, avoid mini pci-e.
If you don't already have the T420, T430s with thunderbolt would be much better.

>>57986411
Using an overclocked X61 with Windows 8, 720p youtube was fine. Some websites lagged if they went overboard with the javascript, but you can't blame the computer for this.

The experience of actually using the computer is way superior to newer models. Using 4:3 after sustained exposure to 16:9 is a drastic improvement.

even though they're chiclets they still have a lot of keytravel and feel just about as nice as the older style keyboards. i'd go for it if you don't mind the layout, plus you can always switch to a t420 keyboard if you really hate it for some reason

Fucking finally. After weeks of fingering the middle mouse rubber button cap after the hinges snapped off my middle mouse button I have got it replaced.

First replacement looked like an xx20 series button and was advertised as such, but the clasps on the back were displaced about 0.5mm vs my original and the hinges too long. So that didn't fit.

Then this silly cunt sent me a trackpoint clit when I asked for a middle mouse button.
He assured me "I JUS LET U KNOW THE KEY FROM X220 (100%)".

He was nice enough though and sent me the actual button after this when I told him.

I get the button and it looks like it's from an xx30 series FUCK.
Somehow though, it actually fits. Pretty happy after all this now as it's comfy as fuck. I much much prefer the flat button. Never liked the weird hump.
