IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My T420s arrived today and it looks completely new. Has not any sings of wear and tear.
But, it makes a squeaking noise. I think it comes from the fan. Is this normal and can I do something? Don't know now it it will annoy me.
>>
I'm putting money away for the 2017 models. Hopefully we will see a Retro Thinkpad with a classic keyboard.
>>
Is Dell Latittude E7240/E7440 good?
>>
>>58025278
>chiclet keyboard actually has better switches
very very arguable, I'd even go as far as to say it's false.
Besides, the biggest issue is the layout
>>
>>58026012
I disagree. Actually I feel that the switches are more responsive and have better feedback.
Anyways, isnt an issue in X230, you can do the mod and install the old keyboard and call it a day.
>>
>>58026091
yeah but that minor pricegap becomes something of a more noticable gap
>>
>>58026115
Good point.
>>
>>58026115
It's not in USD but the price gap is $46 if converted in USD. $221 for x230 and $175 for x220
>>
>>58025948
I'm skeptical that retro Thinkpad will work out, but at this point I'd be happy if they just released a laptop with a taller screen + thunderbolt.
>>

Bit of a PSA - X230 middle mouse button is compatible with the X220. I discovered this by accident but if you're like me and hate the hump thing then this is a great quality of life mod.

Also. What's /tpg/'s favorite mouse clit? I think the cat tongue feels cool but the inverted dome is the most comfortable.
>>
>>58026222
?? that image was correctly orientated before upload.
>>
>>58026214
Yeah but my point is that it'd be more expensive if you had to switch out the keyboard
>>
>>58026244
The keyboard is around $45 if converted. I'm more concerned about performance and graphic rather than keyboard. But I type alot to.
>>
I won a auction today, I was the only bid. €120 for a x220, sounds really good to me.

No idea about the shape it's in other than working, but others said it was good from the same seller.
>>
>>58026256
Yeah if I was concerned about performance I'd buy a new laptop, or maybe a W-series.
>>
what's the general opinion on t430s ? i have a t410 now which sits 90% of the time on a dock, so the less ports wont be critical. How much battery should i expect, are they much hotter ?
>>
>>58026273
But all of them have that annoying touchpad that often get in my when typing and most of them are not ergonomic. They don't have trackpoint either
>>
>>58026297
the best thing about t430s is that you can get one with thunderbolt.
the build quality and display are worse than the 410.
>>
>>58026316
w-series?
>>
>>58026297
As far as I know battery life is duff and the CPU is soldered.

If you sacrifice the ultrabay slot for a battery you can push the longevity. I'd be interested myself to hear from someone who owns one to what extent this extends the life.

Also thunderbolt.
>>
Just got a T410s and the fan seems to make a thumping noise. I am going to take it apart when I have time and check everything out, but what's the likely solution to this?
>>
>>58026356
W series is rare as fuck in my country. Not to mention they are fucking expensive if they are available.
>>
>>58026339
didn't think the display could be worse than the t410's...at least i can get it pretty cheap.

>>58026357
my t410's battery life can barely hit 4hrs, so everything on top would be a plus

Hard to describe. It's kind of like gay guys and gaydar. You just pick it up. I think there's probably some evolutionary component that predisposes people to those mentalities, so maybe that's expressed phenotypically and we tune into that subconsciously.

Looking at her though... I dunno man. Lip stick, mouth shape and her expression trips my SJW alarm.

Got an x220 with an ultrabase for $150. It's really nice so far, but its a model with a tn screen. Is it worth it to try to upgrade to an ips screen?
>>
>>58026477
T520 owner here. It depends on what you want, really. Here are a few points about the T520 for you.

Pros:
It's a laptop that does laptop things.
It has a nicer screen than T420/T420s.
It supports up to a 1920x1080 wide gamut screen from the factory. Still a TN, but a damn good one.
1600x900 panel is decent. Not particularly great, but not as horrid as the mess that is the T420's screen either.
It supports higher specs than T420 from the factory, including quadcore i7 models. T420 can be retrofitted with these, though.
Feels like it could feasibly be used to bludgeon someone to death.
Would probably break the ground if you drop it.

Cons:
It's a bit heavy. I bring mine on my daily commutes to work and sometimes I wish I had a T420s instead.

>>
>>58027153
Damn. First time I'm seeing this mod. Cool as fuck. Wouldn't mind one for my X220. I'm aware there's a nice screen mod for the X220 at least.
>>
>>58027222
the screens for the X6x are even nicer. 4:3 1400x1050 AFFS.
>>
>>58027214
Would you be kind to provide a source, anon?
>>
>>58027229
Yeah, I would appreciate the extra verticality when I'm coding to be honest.

My only minor gripe with the pre-X220 Thinkpads are the escape and delete keys. It's small, but I really appreciate the larger keys. I thought that was a great design choice.

>>
>>58026820
The "retro" lipstick and frames are a hint. Betty Page haircuts and Harry Potter glasses fall into the same category.

It's sort of the female equivalent to 1920s haircuts and waxed moustaches - ironically old fashioned. The thought process probably goes like this.
"It's ironic because we're so modern and progressive we could never be mistaken for reactionaries or those horrible poor white people who work with their hands."

Second hint. Stroppy expression, challenging the viewer, instead of a more open look.

Third, she's kind of malnourished and plain looking, but through her expression and sense of style, seems to expect people to pay attention to her. No humility.

Hindsight is 20/20, but she does communicate a clear "office bitch" look, if not a SJW look.

Is that external display IPS?

Does your new IPS panel have good viewing angles? Just to rule out that its not a TN

>>
>>58027735
What is it that you're doing on your computer when you're on battery only?

Also is that battery new? Mine is a 9 cell, came with the laptop I have two in fact, and neither one show same number for capacity and full charge.
>>
>>58028221
I either do stuff in Word or do some web browsing
Sometimes I even watch a movie or something when I'm on the train
>>
>>58028154
The viewing angles are very good, it is clearly an IPS.
The top one is another computer's IPS monitor.

I don't believe that's the problem. My TN monitor looks great.
>>
>>58027821

Not all displays are created equal.
This applies to IPS panels as well. You can try to calibrate your laptop's colours, but I doubt it'll help much on your undersaturation.

How to change the middle mouse button?
>>
>>58027567
Good build quality and the price is right.
>>
>>58029366
Unscrew the keyboard screws that are marked on the bottom with a keyboard symbol.

You can then remove the keyboard by pushing down and forward towards the screen unlatching it for you to lift it out.

To replace the middle mouse button, you'll need something small to pry it off. You need to be careful or else the hinges will snap. It comes off easily enough though.

Once it's off you just seat the hinges of the new button in their place then press down on the front of the button so that it clicks into place.

It should become obvious how to do this as you fiddle with it. I just figured it out as I went along.

If you want a replacement key, search for those people on ebay who sell individual keys off keyboards and ask them if they have the middle mouse button.

Fuckin arctic silver on an exposed die with a perfectly cleaned and polished heatsink.

Anon, you keep posting your desk only, I wanna see your garage/workspace you keep posting, like show me the entire room.

Also, is there a difference on x220 screens from year to year? My second x220 is from 2012 the first from 2011, both have TN screens, but one looks to have more PPI than the other, less viewing angles than the other, stronger contrast than the other and more brightness control than the other. It also came with stickers from the UN I wonder if it's some sort of privacy screen that you can't see from the sides.
>>
T420 or T430?
>>
>>58032216
T430, because newer.

If you're low on cash and depending on where you are in the world if you can find a 420 and it's significantly cheaper you may want to consider it. Consider however that battery life on the T420 is shit.

Got my t430 in the mail today and I feel like I got boned.

Before I file a complaint, can I upgrade to an Ivy Bridge i7 or am I stuck on Sandy Bridge? If I can upgrade, I'm not too worried as that's what I planned on all along, but if I can't, this was basically a wasted purchase for me.

It sounded good until you said that. By the time you add in a replacement screen and replacement keyboard, you're getting pretty close to brand new prices, you're over half way there. But you are in Deutschland so that complicates things in terms of supply. I don't know.

>700 bucks

Man... well its your money ya know, a lot of people here and elsewhere and if you watch Rossmans videos even he complains and says the x40 is shit because of trying imitate appel.
My reasoning comes from the amount of money you're sinking into a used laptop, if you can spend the 700 plus a bit more you can buy a brand new x260, the T460 is Eur1100 on lenovo website, maybe you can find it elsewhere cheaper and it is brand new and comes with everything you could want, the E and L models are closer to the 700 mark..

The whole point of the thinkpads is that they're cheap used and when you begin crossing that line where you can pretty much buy a new laptop, I personally begin to question the wisdom of doing so.
>>
>>58034564

I know for a fact that e-series are cheap weak chinkpads (it's incredible to see how easily can users destroy company-issued e-series l-series and Ideapads. Like shredding paper i tell you, they are that bad)

I don't know why but I just looked at Lenovo UK FR DE

T460 in DE is 1200 euros
T460 in UK is 899 pounds

is it just because of VAT?? Seems like you can find a cheap supplier in EU and just order a brand new one for the cheapest possible price.

I like it, with the exception of the mold problem there by your window its pretty nice. So you're the fellow with the "snowpad". So you have several thinkpads, can you tell me if there is variation between TN screens over the years? My 2012 model looks different than my 2011 model.
>>
>>58035377
its not mold, just 70 years of shitty paintjobs
you should see my kitchen, instead of using any masking tape they just painted everything blue and gave zero fucks about the cabinetry

as far as tn screens go, i honestly wouldnt know, all my thinkpads are old as dicks so theyre all TFT displays, except for the 380ED which has a FRSTN display

i know that they age poorly, lots of burn in issues and shit like that
its noticeable on my 380ed's screen, the edges where the lights are are extremely white compared to the rest of the screen, internet says it happens over the course of years on alot of TN paneled laptops, alot of chromebook user complaints

i take that back a bit, looking into this more, my IBM monitor i have up top there is a TN display, its alot darker than any of my other displays and seems to be slightly yellowed, like its too warm
max brightness is about the halfway point in brightness for my t42's screen

I think everyone loves your snowpad, you need to post more of it.

Last year I had a ThinkPad Edge 11.

The thing went haywire after about two months. Keyboard kept telling the computer I was pressing B. There was a persistent beep, which I think indicated some kind of hardware problem. I was using a brand new SSD hard drive, which I'm still using at this very moment, so that wasn't the issue.
Then again, its battery had already been burnt out, so it had seen some use. But (mid?) 2011 to early 2015 is not exactly a gauntlet, and there are people here using older thinkpads. That experience was not at all encouraging. Did I just have bad luck, or something?

>>
>>58038843
It was used, and I was no longer on the same continent.

A bad keyboard doesn't explain the beeping. I think it was a motherboard issue. Eventually I couldn't boot it up at all, despite the hard drive and operating system all being in good order. I can't remember all the details, but I was getting long messages on the TTY screen, accompanied by obnoxious and endless bleeping.

I tried re-using the RAM, but it seemed to have been burnt out. Like I said, none of this is encouraging.

Does anyone have any experience with the W-series (specifically the w520 and 530)? Been thinking of snatching one of them but want some opinions on reliability. It most likely would be at home but I would possibly bring along to other places. the size and weight isn't a problem for me.
>>
>>58040342
I have a w520 that I use as an esxi server, it's been running great as one.
although the gpu throttles under load, so that may be an issue if you use it a lot
not an issue for me since esxi doesn't give a shit about 3d acceleration.
>>
>>58040026
>A bad keyboard doesn't explain the beeping

Don't know if you've looked through the previous threads. Long story short, my keyboard went bad because I washed it. What happens with a bad keyboard is very strange on my thinkpad.

Won't POST, power button lights up and goes off, light by webcam comes on and goes off. Computer is going on and off obviously.

Another thing that happened with the bad keyboard, when i managed to get it on, x220 would beep as if I was pressing random keys.

So I say, your problem sounds like a bad keyboard.
>>
>>58040342
If you have a working computer, I'd wait, as we are in a transition period. In another year or two, pretty much everything will be USB C.

Alcohol conducts poorly, a spray can spread evenly without dripping like a wet cloth does,it makes ink stains melt, and it also evaporates quickly. Spray once it from a height, then wipe with dry kitchen roll, and there's next to no risk at all.

ok, so i figured out where it can easily intake air
it pulls air from behind the keyboard like i thought it would, and along that bottom side of the heatsink
which is blocked by the pcmcia slots

so i removed the pcmcia slots, and then wedged the cover open, you can feel the air getting sucked in
fan makes less noise, outputs more air

so along with cleaning out dust, i repasted and such
now its down to 50-60c under load

oh its a piece of shit
The Atom 1.66ghz N455 is about 1/4 of what my T42's Pentium M 755 2ghz is
It can only do 360p video and stutters alot for a few seconds at the start, its slow, hot and loud

only things good about it are:
>it was free
>i can shitpost from it
>8 hour battery life
>looks cool
>has free verizon 3G until 2020

Besides that its:
>slow
>hot
>loud
>slow
>slow
>just barely able to run the newest version of ChromeOS
>has almost no storage on a 16gb SSD, where the newest ChromeOS takes up 1/4 of that
>limited expansion
>only accepts one retarded speed of ram, wont boot otherwise
>32 bit
>"grippy" plastic coating is a dust magnet
>weak speakers

Hey can some one verify this is a IPS, I'm a bit skeptical because all other IPS are priced around £70.

Just installed tlp on ubuntu for my T420.

I'm going to be studying finance in college next year, can someone recommend me the best modern Thinkpad? I love its aesthetic and practicality. I'm looking for modern Thinkpads and have a budget over $1000. Thanks.

I don't care much about the 2 in 1 or touchscreen shit because it seems like a meme.

will an i5 t420 with 8gb ram and ssd be decent enough for running Windows 7 and photoshop cs6 in a vm? Also how likely am I to get dead/white pixels, and is it more common on the 1600x900?

>>58049035
Also would xp sp3 be faster? All I want to do is use illustrator and ps without dual booting. Nothing crazy and no huge files, just assets for web dev.

Found a T430 with:
8 GB RAM

Where to get cheap high quality replacements for X220 batteries?
>>
>>58025869

x230 w/ i5-3320m, 8GB ram, SSD, and no damage for $185.
I'd get the 9-cell battery as well, so total cost <$250.

Is that as good a deal as it seems?
>>
>>58052017
keep in mind that you can never change the CPU, if you're satisfied with the i7 then get it. Also find out if it's IPS or not, but you can change that afterwards.
>>
>>58050693
If its in good shape, has the adapater, and a decent bit of ram, yea
Its a more common old school thinkpad, but it really is "the black box" in its purest form.
I got mine for 100$, with adapater and 48mb of ram, in great shape

This isn't necessarily for a thinkpad but I reckon you guys would know this shit.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good 802.11ac mini pcie card that will work out of the box with linux (preferably debian 8)?

I have a realtek usb dongle rtl8192cu which is apparently infamously shit, and I have an atheros pcie card I can't even identify.

oh and it would be even better if it also had bluetooth onboard that worked out of the box with debian, but I have a working usb dongle for that currently.

Had 20 years of sticker residue on it
50% alcohol, 40% water, 10% acetone

Also, today is my 380ED's 20th birthday

This thing is just fucking amazing
20 years of use. It was almost never on a shelf. It had an office inventory tag and release sticker, there wrgeere files on it going from 2003 to 2014 when i got it, the battery has shitloads of cycles and still holds an hours worth of charge

A T420 is a pretty reliable, long lasting machine
My T42 is 11 years old and is still hanging on
But 20 years of service, where the only visible wear is a paint chip on an edge and the white edges of a well used screen
IBM must be proud

I am having trouble deciding - do I build a desktop or not? I have some leftover ram, a psu, and a heatsink, but I have been using my t430 with a monitor and wireless kb + mouse for months now.

Using a desktop is more comfortable to me as I have more control and can use more features, as well as swap things out. I don't need a desktop though, it is more of a want

Got a W520. The thing is overall very solid, although the speakers quit on me a few months back. Apparently this is a not so uncommon problem which can be traced back to a design defect, where Lenovo routed the speaker cable around a metal clip that would chafe away at the wire insulation. Electrical tape sort of fixed the issue but they now have noticeably lower volume. Headphones and external speakers are not affected.

Aside from that, everything is great.

my old laptop that i had through college died the other day, and since i only really use it for web browsing these days i figured a cheap thinkpad might be a good replacement. I like the T520, but i'm having trouble finding a used one with the 1920x1080 display. its been too long since i've had a laptop/monitor with anything less, am i going to regret going with something that has 1366x768 instead?

I'm not worries about the speakers. I hardly ever use them on my Surface or any other computer. I don't do much gaming (except for some older games and semi-recent ones). How does it handle games? Still deciding whether I want the w530 or w520, need to look more into the differences and upgrade paths. My overall plan is to have windows and linux mint installed. Windows for some games, programs, and music making. While Linux Mint would be pretty much everything else. I've tried setting up the audio system on Linux, but it doesn't like to play nice with my interface.

What's the fucking point of having a shit ton of plastic that comes up around the side anyway? I'd have to cut it all out to actually use the dock effectively.

What speed is the x220 fan supposed to run at maximum?
Mine is rather quiet and runs at 4398 max. 40C idle temp, 80 to 90 under heavy load (make -j5).
