It's a meme, it's to get people who don't like arch, and the arch userbase, mad.

Arch is not supposed to be begginer friendly and yet most if not all of the people who writes "btw I'm on Arch" makes very silly questions.

Is it good? Kinda, if you like netinstalls and don't mind to spend some time actually learning what's wrong when you have a problem, you're probably gonna like it, if you want something more GUI based and ctrl+c ctrl+v solutions, you're gonna hate it.

is opensuse-guide.org a worthwhile site for learning the ins and outs of openSUSE, or is there something better?

As a followup question. if I wanted to use Tumbleweed over Leap, is there anything I'd want to know in addition to what the guide explains for using it properly? (Assuming the guide is even good.)
>>
>>57991895
What do you need that guide for? What do you want to learn?
>>
>>57992157
Mostly the differences between Zypper and Apt. (I've pretty much used *buntus exclusively.) That, and the steps one needs to take to get the various codecs set up that you'd find in ubuntu but not openSUSE. MP3, etc.

I've had an easy time of test running openSUSE in a virtual machine, but I haven't gotten the extra codecs to work for some reason. The instructions outlined in that guide are easy enough to follow, but the page makes it clear it's working on Leap, which is why I'm wondering if me using Tumbleweed had something to do with it. Or maybe it's just something with the VM itself.

How to change DE/WM on PCLinuxOS? There doesn't seem to be a dedicated tool to do that. Apparently if you install another DE/WM's packages then it will then be loaded with X, but what if you want to switch to the other one without uninstalling anything? Slackware has xwmconfig to accomplish exactly that, does PCLinuxOS have anything similar?
>>
>>57990156
>blurry textures & blocky polygons

It was tolerable in the previous decade, but now not so much.
>>
>>57994392
Most distros without a login manager use startx to run whatever's in ~/.xinitrc, or maybe /etc/xinitrc. See if it's using one of those, and ask the arch wiki what to put instead to launch what you want. But maybe Puppy doesn't do that.

On Ubuntu 16 /bin/lua points to /etc/alternatives/lua-interpreter which points to lua50. I could probably just ln -s that to lua53, but is there some way to change the default lua version less manually? There's 7 lua tools in /etc/alternatives, and I don't wanna keep track of that.
>>
>>57994392

Most display managers offer you to choose a session.
Unrelated but top using PCLinuxOS and other shitty downstream distributions. I bet you can't even name one valid reason why someone should use it. On the other hand I can name you at least one which will trump your "zero reasons": being close to upstream.
>>
>>57994576
>PCLinuxOS and other shitty downstream distributions

What? PCLinuxOS is not based off of anything else. It used to be a fork of Mandriva but that's long ago, it has been an entirely independent distribution for many years. Not using systemd is a very good incentive to use it if you want something that's easier to work with than Slackware or Gentoo.
>>
>>57994576
>PCLinuxOS
>shitty

Somehow it's considered a major distribution by Distrowatch. Stay uninformed.
https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major
>>
>>57994623

Apparently you are knowledgeable enough to understand init systems and system managing tools, but you don't know how to change your desktop session. Typical anti-systemd gullible person. Such a person would also know how to search the internet, but you didn't do that either. Which only confirms my claim.

I just checked PCLinuxOS and you're right. It's still an obscure distribution which has no pros for usage by "new users", which it seems to be targeted at.
>>
>>57994707

Distrowatch is the authority on common sense in the Linux distribution world.
I can't even find a website which allows me to browse through PCLinuxOS' packages. So much about how serious it is. There could be though, I'm still searching.

Who here has given (GNU plus) Linux to a normie? What distro did you pick? How did they take it? What problems came up?

I ask since my parents have creaky old laptops running Windows 7, and both are adamantly opposed to using either 10 or a Mac. They asked me recently if they can still get laptops running 7, and I told them no, if they want new hardware, their choices are 10, Mac, or Linux. I suspect they might take me up on option number three.
>>
>>57994914

Why would you want to install that bloated garbage on their laptop? Don't you care about your parents?
>>
>>57994945
because I figured if I didn't add that someone would interject for a moment
>>
>>57994914
You realize you can install Windows 7 on new laptops, right?
Just give them (X/L/K)ubuntu, make launchers for LibreOffice Calc, LO Writer, Firefox and the file manager of your choice and there you go. Maybe teach them that .exe files don't do shit and tell them to ask you if they need additional programs so you can fire up a terminal and be all 1337 pro hacker by sudo apt installing.
>>
>>57994970
Why don't you just ignore anyone trying to force their choice of outdated and bloated software onto you.
busybox + musl libc is already a thing and I'm sure there are other alternatives to GNU as well. GNU/Linux is literally outdated and useless at this point in time.

To answer your question though, my parents have used openSUSE without that much trouble. I just preinstalled everything they could possibly need. I guess you could give them any distro which doesn't break too often, kde or mate would probably be a good DE choice. Also you could just install win7 yourself if they can't deal with Linux.
>>
>>57995012
>>You realize you can install Windows 7 on new laptops, right?
Yeah but I figured it'd be nice to not have to worry about them getting malware. Or for me to just be able to ssh in if they got stuck and needed me to fix something, instead of having to have me in front of their machine.

3 retards

Meme: 1. an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.

2. an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.

So installing arch because /g/enitals told you so, is not a system of behaviour passed done.

The word "Arch' is a meme.
>>
>>57995161
>>57995240
So why cant Arch be a meme?
>>
>>57995279
>>57995324
the second definition is invalid and is basically the reddit definition.
the first definition is the correct one but a distro can't possibly be that. there could be memes about a distro like the false meme "arch is lightweight" but the distro itself can't be a meme.
the word arch denotes a distro which has a lot of memes about it. a distro can't be a meme by definition.
>>
>>57995335

>system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means

So i ran ubuntu for awhile on a VM. I enjoyed it enough to go through with dual boot with windows. The only problem is when i go through the bios and boot up linux to install it it doesnt give me the option to run side by side with windows. I have two hd my though was to just put linux on one of them but that was a fail. Some kind of error came up to do with not finding an OS. my question is how do i go about partitioning my hd with windows on it so inhave a place for ubuntu. I might be a little vague its been about a week sense i messed with it. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to reduce the size of the partition windows is in. Defrag your drive first and then shrink it by either the windows partitioner http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/gg/up/sshot-2009-08-27-15-50-21.png or boot up the live-USB ubuntu and use gparted to shrink it. I would suggest using gparted as windows partitioner sometimes just doesn't want to co-operate

>>
>>57995992
Why the fuck would anyone be arsed to download an image off the internets to his disk first just to upload it to 4chins then? Why can't 4chins fetch the image directly from a link?
>>
>>57996016
Unlike windows partitioner (dunno about the newer versions, I've only used the one that came with 7) gparted first makes a list of actions you want to make to the drive without actually doing them so you don't have to worry about having second thoughts midway of doing something, You have to apply the operations after making them.
>>
>>57996058
Windows actually has a way of using temp files. You paste the link into the upload box and then it uploads that image. I just wish I knew how to do that in linux.

Set them up with Mint...

Got my mom a new laptop with 10 and she quickly adapted from 7. She's not a huge tinfoiler and as long as everything appears the same there's no problem (Chrome = Internet, LibreOffice = Office).
Otherwise I'd put her on x/kubuntu or something.

you compile everything. you don't have to but it's kind of the point, since it was made to do so for those sweet 5% performance gains. it's not hard in so much as it's just following a guide and have both basic troubleshooting skills and the patience to bother using them.

if you just want something that works without tinkering don't bother.

I use it for writing and printing.
I can't use any OS newer since the hardware doesn't support it, and I can't use Linux since it doesn't fully support the printer, or any printer for that matter.

And even if I wanted to browse most of today's sites is very demanding.
>>
>>57996665
because you pick and choose exactly what is included when you compile. A binary release will usually have everything included, like functionality for a variety of types of computers, of a huge array of features. But when you compile it you get to flag exactly what you want and can exclude all the superfluous shit.

I'm still learning my way around kubuntu but I'll probably give gentoo a crack in the next few weeks when I've got some time. once you get it all setup and running initially it's actually quite easy to maintain, or so I've been told.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Can confirm.

Anti-systemd hipsters are actually worse edgy than Arch kids.

what's wrong with systemd?
>>
>>57999651
It's cool to hate it. That's the only actual reason.

>>57999651
Nothing critical since it's free software. The discussion is basically autism about the programs structure and size.

Nothing unless you're super autistic and care about low level things in your OS you don't even notice and won't have any problems with 99% of the time

My grandmother cannot tell the difference. I just got absolutely sick of dealing with all of the viruses she got on windows. The issues that I have ran into is that there is a bug for lightdm that would keep her screen from locking. I just switched her over to xscreensaver and it works fine now. My only complaint is that I cannot turn off the update reminder. I set it to every 2 weeks, but I just wish it could be shut off.
