If you're going to keep your computer on all the time, you need a RAID.

If you don't want to build a RAID, turn your computer off when you're not using it. Windows especially has pretty high disk activity, even when the system is idling for various reasons because it's a shitty botnet OS and Microsoft hates you. Turning off the machine when not in use will greatly extend the life of your drives.

Regardless of what you do, RAID is not a backup and you should be backing up data anyway.

Even raidz2 is deprecated now. Using 4TB drives, you can expect a second and third drive to fail before the array is rebuilt, meaning total data loss.

raidz in general is stupid if you ever plan to expand your storage. RAID10/mirrored vdevs is the only reasonable choice.

Just follow the 2^n + p rule for ZFS, where raidz1 has a parity of 1, raidz2 has a parity of 2 disks and raidz3 has a parity of 3 disks.
