Thinking of buying 2 of pic related. I currently have a 32" 1440p monitor as my main display and am looking to add 2 monitors above it. One oriented sideways like normal for watching a movie or streaming netflix while gaming. The other situated vertically for browsing the web.

anyone have this monitor? Or Acer monitor in general? How are they. I have no intention of gaming on these 2 monitors.

I want to buy an rx 480 8gb. My question is if I wait, when are the new AMD and NVIDIA cards comming out?
>>
>>57942506
not soon enough to matter. Don't play the waiting game. Is the RX480 going to meet your needs NOW? Buy it.
>>
>>57942562
Ill just be playing at 1080p
>>
What's the daily write limit for a HDD?
>>
>>57942587
the RX480 is basically a lower power R9-390 really. The 390 was getting outperformed at 1080p by most mid range Nvidia cards.

Does your monitor have Freesync? Do you play a lot of games that use DX12? If not buy a gtx 1060 6GB. The 480 is a better long term investment in regards to DX12 implementation in later games, but for the hear and now, the 1060 performs very well at 1080p.
>>57942588
limit? You mean theoretical? Assuming an HDD doesn't have its read or write head fail, or its control board die, a mech disc can go for years. I had a Seagate 1TB disk only just recently fail me after almost 90TB of use over the course of 4 years. It was also refurbed when I bought it too.

I dont have a freesync monitor but im thinking of getting one because my current one is a tv. I dont play alot of games that use dx12 because most games dont use them. I was thinking of geting the rx 480 8gb instead of the gtx 1060 6gb because of more vram and more cheaper

AMD freesync + RX 480 would definitely be a cheaper combo than 1060 and G-sync. Dell makes a 60hz Freesync 1080p 24' monitor for $150 now.

But yea like I said. 480 will outperform the 1060 at really anything above 1080p. 1440p and up is when the AMD cards start to shine. That and also like I said, longevity.
The RX480 will age way better than the 1060 in regards to performance over time. Case in point, my buddy's radeon 7970 he bought at launch was still kicking ass until a few weeks ago. Only replaced it because the fan went on it and any after market cooler worth using was $60 minimum.

>>

unfortunately not. Apart from a few comments discussing potential issues of resizing window, the only answer there clearly states that minimum window sizes are blocked in the interface builder part of MacOS.

My next question, or at least concern, is that I occasionally see people in desktop threads with MacOS. They have really clean fully riced setups. I wish I knew where to even start. I did some ricing in arch but that's because with arch you basically have to build it from the ground up. It's more complicated when I'm trying to tear down what's already installed.

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to set up a blog om Wordpress.org over Wordpress.com.

For .org:
>needing hosting space
use bluehost
>need to deal with own security and speed
cloudflare
>need own domain
Get one from a registrar

Is there any other major maintenance con of wordpress.org that I need to mitigate for? I want to run a blog but with much greater customisation than .com while keeping maintenance and coding knowledge requirement as low as possible.

What's the deal if my traffic gets high, does it get very expensive to host high traffic on a wordpress.org and where does that cost come from?

Tl;dr I just want a super-customisable wordpress site but for basic blogging, so as minimal maintenance as possible, what else do I probably need?

I have this digital television converter. It can play videos from pendrives. Here is the formats it can play, according to the manual:
>Video: MPEG-1 MPEG-2 MP@ML MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 HP@L3/H.264/AVC HD
>Audio: MPEG-1 (layer 1&2), AAC+
Is it good, or bad?

Sorry >>57946501 and >>57946505, I forgot to write my question on the previous post (deleted).

Figure out if I have overheating issues.
I've acquired some old machine, but for some reason I can't get it to show it's CPU temps, the sensors aren't being detected.

However it shutdown after a while when unning, and I'm suspecting the CPU is over heating, will running a CPU benchmark will confirm my suspicions?

It doesn't play AC-3 (Dolby Digital). I downloaded a movie and it had no audio, because the audio was AC-3 and the BHD-10S can't play AC-3.

Is this unacceptable and unforgivable?
>>
>>57946813
well is it? only you can decide.

or do you want someone else to make up your mind?
Here's what you think of it: It's okay, who needs audio anyway, you'll watch movies without audio.
>>
>>57946683
>without subtitles
Why did you say that? I can put subtitles on it. I'm not having problem with this feature... Except by the fact that the subtitles are always written on white, without borders. So they are unreadable on some scenes.

Is there a downside to leaving my DAC default sample rate at 96khz even when listening to content that is not recorded at that rate? Should I just set it to 44.1 or 48 and only raise it when appropriate?
>>
>>57946620
bump
>>
>>57947434
As long as you're not experiencing any cut-outs, loud pops or buffer underruns you're fine. The daily use profit is pretty much nonexistent since most content is either 44.1khz or 48khz. So apart from a very few scenarios you won't be noticing any difference.

I'd be way too lazy to switch the sample rate every time though, so as long as you don't have any of the issues listed above you're good.

>>
>>57948356
transcode is the same thing as re-encode (decode, followed by an encode)
what i said was trancode /only/ the audio, which is quite fast
the video works already, right? so just copy that across

for example,
ffmpeg input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -c:a libfdk_aac -vbr 4 output.mp4

any audio tracks with be transcoded into AAC, but other tracks (video, subtitles) will be left as-is

encoding audio is pretty fast, most likely the speed will be limited by your hdd, if you output directly onto your usb drive, you may not lose any time at all

So I went on kissanime.io -- a mirror of the video streaming site kissanime.to. .io was recently found to be a phishing website rather than a change in domain -- two days ago and watched something. I don't have an account on there or nothing so I didn't log in. But I did watch a video and I know embedded videos can carry malware. I used an uBlockOrigin

I've run two virus scans each with different software (malwarebytes and avast) and they're showing up nothing, which is making me feel more twitchy than if they found something.

1. What are some good measures for me to take right now? Am I just lucky and didn't get any? What could they actually have gotten from me by visiting and watching videos?

The problem is, some users on the web reported issues in running at 2560x1440 with the same card. In particular, 2560x1600@60 Hz is listed under supported resolutions, while 2560x1440 is not; as a result, some user on the web reported that they had to reduce the refresh rate to use 2560x1440 with the same card. Is there actually a limitation due to the use of hdmi (hdmi v1.3 should support up to 2560x1600@60 Hz) or is this a driver/configuration issue which one could easily overcome?

I wouldn't worry. Generally if you keep your software up to date you won't usually be vulnerable to the kind of thing that can infect you just from watching a video. Those kinds of exploits are patched quickly since they represent a big danger to users. As long as you didn't install some "codec" it was telling you you needed or something you should be fine.

None of that is relevant.

This was a quote from Barney Frank, a former congressman.

http://www.out.com/news-opinion/2015/3/20/barney-frank-friday

"When I first thought about politics in 1954, being gay was so universally despised, it was something I was going to have to try to repress. As I went forward, I discovered that repression actually worked and I got into a couple jobs, chief assistant to the mayor and then the legislature. I did make this conscious choice: I won’t be honest. I want very much to be in politics. I’ll have to not act on being gay, I would have to keep it quiet. But I will always be an advocate. I may be a coward, but I will always be a supporter. And because nobody else wanted to do it, I wound up being a primary supporter of the gay rights bill, not something I wanted, but I could not walk away from that.”

"For those like Ben Carson, who just announced that it was a choice, I do want to say at 14 I did not choose to be a member of what I thought was the most hated group in America. That was not a typical teenage reaction at the time.”

So you mean I should be safer with a 2560x1600 monitor since 2560x1440 is not recommended by Intel, even if I should be able to drive a 2560x1440 monitor with the same card by adding a custom resolution? Could I cause damage to the monitor if instead I use a custom 2560x1440 resolution?
>>
>>57950358
Always use the advertised resolution / refresh rate. It's safe to go lower if you have a reason to, but never higher. Otherwise you're overworking the monitor's internals and it won't make things look better even, it'll just be harder to use.

No good reason. Also, since the screen only has enough pixels to manage the recommended resolution, a DSR (dynamic super resolution) would do NOTHING useful, since it merely simulates a higher resolution. It's pretty useless. You need more physical pixels in a screen to get higher quality. Forcing 4K on a 1080p screen doesn't magically give you 4K.

Yeah I know, I have a copy of Windows 10 lying around, I was going to dual boot and that game comes free with the installation.

CPU use is constantly at 50% and in task manager its svchost and system idle process.

how do i lower this? running windows 7 on thinkpad x301
>>
>>57951078
You dont. You let your system do what it needs to do.
>>
>>57951078
show command line column and look at the service name to figure out what it is.

>>57949449
all your files will be right where you left them.

Why the fuck are micro USB to display (VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort etc) adapters so damn expensive?
>>
>>57949473
I think that's the most retarded thing I've read on /g/ so far.
>>
>>57950934

I think I found one:

Judging by the recommended requirements of a NVIDIA GeForce 970 or Radeon R9 290X equivalent, I think a 1050 Ti should suffice.

Fixed it
After uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers live without success, I went and checked if AMD somehow reenabled the autoconfiguration for the wlan, and sure enough it did, for whatever fucking reason
After disabling that with netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no it's now working perfectly

Thanks anyway /g/

I've never used any kind of linux before. Where do I start?
>>
>>57951379
You can start with a live image to try it out without installing, or with a virtual machine. Something like Ubuntu would be the best in terms of user-friendliness.

Jewgle Chrome is so full of shit it reached the critical mass and turned into a black hole.
>>
>>57951627
lol good one. I realize it only does that if google chrome is open. but damn it's such a convenient browser otherwise.
>>
>>57951652
Since it seems related to Google Chrome, I suggest you just try to reinstall... Make sure to delete leftover/configuration files after uninstalling
>>

Irfan View with the plugin pack is the best I know. Fast, lightweight, and displays almost anything.

they tend to do/use things most other kinds of programs don't, so they aren't well tested/supported
but you shouldn't (want to) do that anyway

if you want to try it, sandbox it in some way, keep in mind wine is not a sandboxed environment by default, it is designed to integrate with your system. don't assume it works like a VM where fucking it up can only affect the VM

Also posted in FGLT, but does anyone know if I'll have issues with an M720 or MX Master on linux? I don't care about the bluetooth compatability as long as everything like DPI switching and side buttons work as well as receiver compatability.

Also what's the correct syntax here, I want to subtract a decimal. If I write it like this, it thinks I'm subtracting 0. With a comma there are too many columns.
