They have some of the worst keycaps out there, but if you absolutly need custom keycaps then go for it. Otherwise get their barebones keyboards which are actually good, then get some keycaps from massdrop for like 30 bucks
>>
>>57932564
They're about the same quality as Filco, but those custom printed caps are awful garbage. Just get them with the front printed Vortex PBT caps.

why do you think I'm posting here 24/7
>>
>>57932670
No, there are good ABS caps out there. WASD just makes especially shitty ones. They're very thin and whatever they use for dye makes the surface flake off. With other ABS caps you only have to worry about the tops being polished.

Mass producing a good quality single uniform set is cheap if you have to tooling. Otherwise either buy it from some one else, or spends loads of money getting the toolong yourself. I know the classic cherry Esc key mold cost like $500000

Why arent modular keyboards a thing yet? I was going to get a Memeforce as my first mech, but then I discovered "CIY" keyboards, where you can easily swap switches without the hassle of soldering. I bought a Zhuque TKL on Amazon for $40 and it was an amazing deal for what I got. I swapped out the no-name china switches for some Zealios and PBT keys and I couldnt be happier. Theres also the Team Wolf CIY keyboard, but I havent tried that one.

"Up for sale is a Maltron 3D Ergonomic Keyboard with Cherry Brown switches and a L90 Maltron layout (WARNING: THIS IS NOT A QWERTY KEYBOARD). I purchased it direct from Maltron and, fair warning to all potential buyers, this keyboard is a piece of crap. The body is made from a really cheap, really thin plastic that will bend if you press down too hard. Each key's cutout looks like it was done by hand with an Exacto knife, so the keys aren't very straight (especially the ones in the middle, see image). Some of the cutouts were also cut too close so that the switches are either not pushed in completely, or will rub against the key next to it (in particular, the Right Ctrl key will rub against the Right Shift key, see image). The switches are pushed into the keyboard rather than mounted on a PCB, so they're easy to pull out, and each switch is soldered individually onto the controller PCB, causing a mess of wires. The 5 status lights are unlabeled and I don't know what each one is for, and the PCB for the USB port is held on with hot glue instead of screws. You can even see marks on the body where the hot glue was applied and warped the texture slightly, which they used as a lip so that the bottom panel of the keyboard doesn't sink into the body. The keyboard itself works properly, it's just really, really poorly constructed.

Frankly, I would have thrown this keyboard in the trash, but I paid over $600 for it, so I wanted to see if anybody was interested in it first. Don't say I didn't warn you though, but thank you for your interest all the same."

>original model Fs costed (when adjusted for inflation) $900

What's your point?

A 1-button mac mouse costed $300 after inflation. An early 5.25" floppy drive would run you $800 in today's money.

That's no excuse when we can build as good or better for far less today.

Hall effect keyboards cost over a thousand today's money and now we have that Acepad company in China selling new ones for $80.

All it's going to take is for one competitive manufacturer to get on board with capacitive buckling springs and you'll see some on the market for sub-$100.

Realforce 87U. Thought I'd love Topres but I really don't. They're nicer than ordinary rubberdomes but they rank lower than Cherry switches for my preferences. Turns out I like ALPS the best, with buckling springs a very close second.

>The model F has better build quality then all most every keyboard made today.

[citation needed]

Sticking it in a metal case doesn't equate to build quality pertinent to its use as a keyboard. Likewise the use of twisted metal tabs for plate retention isn't impressive just because the model M used shitty plastic rivets. Most other switch types don't have need of such riveting in the first place so no comparison can be drawn at all.

>And even then the other good keyboards cost $400+

And which keyboards might these be? And on whose authority is their status as "good" determined?

>Have you seen what Realforce and HHKB put out? Not exactly poor quality.

I wouldn't call the hhkb an outstanding example of build quality.
It is solid for being mostly plastic but it's still very underwhelming the first time you take it in your hand after spending so much for it.

I have to say I treated mine horribly since I take it back and forth work/home everyday in my backpack, and it held great, but I think it could be sold for 100$ and still make a profit
>>
>>57946650

For one thing I don't need or want an aluminum case, and a fucking ugly one with massive space-wasting bezels at that

What I want is capacitive buckling springs with NKRO. This could certainly be done with more conventional materials and more than adequate build quality for $100-150.
>>
>>57946954

I did. I'm not impressed.
>>
>>57946960
Made in Japan ain't cheap.

And the second you move production to China, the QC you had in Japan goes out the window.

Given the construction method they choose they're very excellent.
>>
>>57947011
Its still better then the spec sheet for topre and cherry :^)
>>
>>57947034

That's bullshit and you know it. Just look at Apple products. They're exquisitely made to high standards, and that's Foxconn in China.
>>
>>57947034
Do you think hhkb are assembled by samurais?

China really upped their quality game in recent years

Protip: all your 100$+ keycaps sets you buy are made in China no matter the brand

first mech keyboard, but not sure if i like the keycaps? looked through the wiki but not alot of options for backlit ones, any suggestions?

>Just look at Apple products
Yes. Parts manufactured outside of China and assembled in China.

There's a reason nothing that's meant to be the highest quality goes anywhere near China. ie Fluke manufacturers their high end stuff in America.

Name me one thing that's actually manufactured in China that is the highest quality you can get. Doesn't even have to tech related.

Don't worry, After 10min you'll get tired of kiddy lights and turn them off.

After that, any pbt keycap set is good for you

You sure about that. Its a well known fact that their tech and manufacturing sector sucks compared to the rest of the world, but their pharmacutical and medicine industry is all ready ahead of Europe, and is on par with the US. In some areas they are already the best in the world.

Currently on a shitty membrane Steelseries Apex Raw. Owned an M800 for a bit, but it died because Steelseries.

I would love a full form factor with backlighting that doesn't scream GAMUR. Would love a minimalistic 90s/80s look, but again, backlighting would be nice. I don't really mind that much of a backlight customisation, as you can interchange keycaps.

Friendo, you need a printed PCB. Or at least proper wire strippers so you arent 'scraping' off the insulation.

Topre fags by far

IBM's have lasted over 30 years and are still the best.
>>
>>57948592
Joke's on you, I'm poor.
>>
>>57948611
Both topre and cherry have also lasted over 30 years. Its nothing to be proud off. A lot of people seem to forget that buckling spring over membrane and cherry MX switches came out in the same year.
>>
>>57948687
Topre isn't as old as capacttive buckling spring or membrane spring. Capacitive buckling spring was released 1981 and membranes were released 1985. Topre was more like late 90's. And who cares about cherry? They've always been inferior to Alps and Buckling springs

>>
>>57948772
>Topre was more like late 90'
First time topre switch started appearing in keyboards about was in 1986, but the first mass produced topre keyboard was in 1987. Besides the patent for topre switches was filed in 1984

Europe is pretty big place. I think Cooler Master and Ducky have some keyboards there that fit your description
>>
>>57948884
Then it took an extremely long time to become somewhat relevant. As I said, Buckling springs are older. And how many people are using those old topres? Everyone using Buckling springs are using ones from the 80's and 90's. My point is they have lasted longer and aged better than topre.
>>
>>57948912
Thats only in America tho. you can still get old Sony topre keyboards, but shipping them is a hassle

Filco with browns. Not because it was a Filco, but because I didn't realize how shitty browns were coming from blues.

Honorable mention to Granite keycap set. Fuck DSA, and fuck overpriced keycaps hyped by ledditors.
