MOD-L: The lightest of the new mod switches with an actuation of 45g. These are said to be between a Cherry Brown and Cherry Clear. I have to disagree with that. I actually find these to feel very similar to Cherry Browns.
. EDIT: I've typed a bit more extensively and did some blind testing with the browns vs the MOD-L and have changed my opinion on the bump. The bump is a little more prominent on the MOD-L, which I believe may be due to the slightly heavier feel of the MOD-L (despite being 45g actuation). When pressed slowly, the tactile bump on the brown has quick onset/offset and feels sharp. In contrast, the tactile bump of the MOD-L has a longer onset/offset and the bump feels quite smooth and drawn out. I wouldn't compare the MOD-L to a topre switch (unlike the MOD-M). In summary, it feels like a slightly heavier Cherry Brown that has been made much smoother and the tactile bump softer, bigger, and more drawn out.

MOD-M: This feels drastically different compared to MOD-L. With 55g to actuate, these are the middle of the 3 new MOD switches. These have been previously compared to 45g Topre and I would say that's a reasonable comparison. When pressed slowly, it feels similar to the MOD-L but with a more noticeable bump, but one that is still smooth/drawn out. However, in contrast to the MOD-L, when pressed quickly, the MOD-M, retains its tactile bump whereas the MOD-L loses a bit of the bump. This makes it feel significantly more tactile when compared to its lighter counterpart.

Wobble: Both the side to side and vertical wobble are more than that of a Cherry switch from what I can tell. I have only tested these with OEM and cherry profile keycaps (I don't own DSA or SA). The wobble isn't to a degree where I would be deterred from purchasing these switches.

I've never owned a mechanical keyboard in my life and I'm considering buying myself one for Christmas. Right now I have my laptop set up on a docking station with a full sized membrane Dell keyboard from years ago and the rubber is disintegrating.

My friend has a Razer Blackwidow I've used before and the switches were fine I guess although a little loud.

Can you recommend me something with a quiet tactile switch, 80%, backlit at under or around $200?

I'm unfamiliar with any brands that aren't gaymer marketed so I have no idea about the reliability of certain sellers.
>>
>>57950817
>a quiet tactile switch
You have a few options such as Matias Quiet Clicks, and Topres/their clones. As far as back lighting is concerned there is only one Topre board that does this and it has RGB lighting. Their clones have more options. You can buy them here:

>>
>>57945855
>How much have you spent in total on this hobby?
About $800 of my own money. My first board was another $180, but it was also a gift.

>Most regrettable purchase?
A POK3R that I can't use as my daily driver anymore. Thinking of replacing the clears with something lighter, maybe even replacing the controller and writing some custom firmware. For now, it just sits on a shelf.
>>
>>57950893
I'll look there, thanks.

Hi /mkg/, first time poster here.

So I'm interested in getting a mechanical keyboard. I love my current keyboard (as in pic) because of the media keys and because of the very high activation force. Problem is my current keyboard came with my last prebuilt in 2006 and it's been through a lot so it's very dirty and the membrane is very beaten up.

So I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard with big dedicated media keys, high activation force and a USB hub. I'd also like a sleek looking classy keyboard.

I've seen a keyboard on massdrop, the Tex Yoda, that looks perfect for me as I like trackpoints. Problem is it's way too expensive and there hasn't been a drop for it in years.
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/tex-yoda

Thanks for any help in advance. If there's no suitable keyboard I can always just buy another of the one I'm currently using.
>>
>>57950893
>>57950970
Hold on, when I said quiet I just meant something that wasn't overly loud, not out of it's way to be quiet, sorry. A regular tactile switch like Browns or Clears
>>
>>57951020
Topres are still some of the best switches out there
>>
>>57951019

Congrats, you're getting a Daskeyboard. It has everything you've asked for. Have a nice day.
>>
>>57951005
I think it's mostly the cramped layout. I used to like it but now I get wrist pain after 20 minutes, even though I can use my full size with greens just fine. For daily use I've switched to a TKL with Matias quiet clicks.

I am typing this message (well half of it) on the left hand PCB. Seems to work! Really I need to get the plates sorted now so I can actually use the keyboard since I'm currently just balancing the bendy plastic prototype plate on the circuit board, making it somewhat of a nightmare with springs occasionally flying everywhere. This is the current setup:

Zoom in (real dimensions: 2448 x 2448)Image

I think the case should be simplified to just being the plate suspended above a piece of acrylic:

Zoom in (real dimensions: 1892 x 901)Image

Reason being that due to the PCB being somewhat experimental I don't want people having to spend a load on the case to end up with a £200 paperweight. That's the worst case of course - but it would bring the price into a more justifiable range, and there's always the option of producing the case later on. Any thoughts on this? I hope to hit below £100 for all the parts (PCB fully assembled and flashed) with this plan.

Topre never made their own keyboards, instead manufacturing switches for other companies, until a test run in 1999-2001, then - after being encouraged by decent sales - stuck to it.

Buckling springs and mechanical switches will, generally, age better than Topre - however, their weight and sound are not to my preference.

I see people saying the ABS on the Das Professional are actually decent, what did they mean by this?

On the das website they say at least the keys are "laser etched" so I imagine this means they aren't fading instantly like typical ABS.

Don't matter if it's PBT or ABS. Shitty legends are shit.

AFAIK it's the plastic becoming smooth.
PBT is a harder (and brittle, so it breaks when struck with a hammer more readily) plastic so it retains its texture for longer.
ABS wears down quickly because it is soft and begins to shine faster, as you would see in >>57957899

I don't think it would last as long as PBT for keycaps.
https://deskthority.net/photos-f62/whoops-i-did-it-again-hhkb-pro-1-t6955.html
It would get worn down like this.
Granted it was over many years and the keycaps are still in functional condition, but the PBT still has some texture on it so it has worn down less, unlike the spacebar.
I think any ABS would last a while it just isn't the prettiest or feeliest.
I have heard that Topre doesn't PBT for spacebars because of warping but IBM might have figured it out with their beamspring and buckling spring boards.

it doesn't warp over time, it's due to trying to run the mold too fast. It's less dimensionally stable as it cools, so you have to account for that in manufacturing and it slows the process down.

Yes, Topre's sheet of rubber is for the feel of the key rather than the actuation of it (it uses capacitance and a spring not a sheet of rubber striking another membrane) but it is a membrane keyboard nonetheless.

You know, not everybody has to buy a thousand times the same thing over and over again and then claim to have used "a good amount of switches". Some people just visit other peoples homes and get to use their computer for a brief period of time.

Same applies to these fags collecting computer mice.

Nobody needs to know what's inside, that's the beauty of electronics: You pay other people to know the insides and then combine these things together to a fully working product. I couldn't care less about COLORS in switches. Naming switches after colors is like knowing nothing about the world we live in.

You have to deal with other peoples decisions, anon.

Not the one you're replying to, but I have tried out Reds, Browns, Blues, Blacks, many rubber domes, cream ALPS and buckling springs - in the country I'm in, getting hands on anything which is not a "gamer keyboard" or cheap rubber dome is difficult. The cream ALPS aren't to my liking, the Reds/Blacks are too linear, the Blues are too annoyingly clicky - it deconcentrates me when coding - and the Browns are... horrible. (Buckling Springs are very nice in feel, but too heavy/loud)

Right now, my daily driver - because I could not find anything satisfactory - is a 1991 Olivetti membrane/rubber dome keyboard I found in my basement (which is nice, but the rubber has hardened over the years and is just a tad too heavy to press) and a ThinkPad X220 laptop keyboard (eh). The HHKB seems to tick all the boxes I'm interested in - it's a light, portable keyboard with a good layout, pleasant feel and sound (I am not sure if I prefer the normal or Type-S) - although I've also been interested in Matias's smaller keyboards (though I heard their QC has dropped sharply in 2014, allegedly?). Before that, I worked on a Cherry MX Blue board, but the click eventually annoyed me so much I sold it to a friend. This is why I'm looking for a keyboard.

I never understood this. Why call the hhkb the end game when Realforce exists and comes with a number pad for less than the hhkb? I would never call a keyboard endgame when it's less than ten keyless. When a keyboard is limited in functionality it is far from end game and is just a compromise.

>>
>>57963210
Doesn't matter since I want that space to keep my mouse closer and possibly having sheets near me.

Bigger desk with far away stuff does not interest me
>>
>>57963125
To add: One thing that puts me off from Matias boards is the insane gloss, but I do have an AEK II I could salvage for keycaps. The 1991 Olivetti membrane also has the common problem that you need to slam the keys and bottom out sharply to register a press, seeing as it's nothing fancy at all - but hey, it's the only keyboard I had in my basement which worked and didn't look as if it was taken straight out of a trashcan.

>>57963148
Part aesthetics, part portability (I move around a lot), part minimizing the need to move hands around (same logic which makes people prefer trackpoints to mice).

>>57963157
I know that BTC domes are Topre without the price and durability, but they're also big.

>>57963196
>brand name for a keyboard which sells a few thousand units a year at best
The HHKB is not $5 to produce. The cheapest Chinese Topre knockoffs go for $80, and the build quality sacrifices are visible.

>>57963210

>>
>>57963192
Maybe I'm living under a rock but I've never seen a HHKB advertisement nor one in any store in America.
Are you like 14 and everything you don't like is Beats?

People don't buy Beats for the name. They buy for the look or out of ignorance. Beat's advertising pushes that.
>>
>>57963220
BTC domes are much better value for money

Neither are beats by dre, that doesn't change the fact that both are cheap to produce and cheap to buy.

Maybe you should consider working out?>>57963223
Why would they ever need to advertise when they have you retards doing it for them?
>>
>>57963249
You mean like word of mouth? Because that's how Topre got its reputation. Not BS advertising.

They're endgame switches and no amount of childish comparisons will change that. HHKB and Realforce reputation is too strong among the community that uses their keyboards.
>>
>>57963223
The look is part of the Beats branding.
And advertisements have nothing to do with the comparison, the point is that people buy HHKBs to have a HHKB and/or to have a keyboard that's ~made in Japan~. That's why HHKB layout clones that cost a fraction of the price are still unpopular (bar the Korean custom ones, but they're Korean customs, of course people want them).
>>
>>57963249
I know. Diminishing returns are normal in every business, anon. Topre keyboards are pricey, but not 40x overpriced - unless you only care about the feel of the switch. As I said, I have other reasons to consider the HHKB.

I didn't buy it yet. Also, much cheaper? Name one. I expect "much cheaper" to be <$140, as the HHKB Pro 2 can be had for $215-ish if you look around.

Yes. To make things more fun, the original membrane HHKB was priced as high as the Topre HHKB is now; however, that was primarily because of the appealing high compatibility (Sun, PS/2 and ADB connector support in one keyboard! Was a fair deal in the mid-90s). Over the next few years, they slashed it to $139 before finally discontinuing it and going Topre.

You can get much better fucking quality for that money. Model F reproductions cost a similar amount, they have solid metal cases that have been powder coated, they have an optional HHKB layout, and modern case options with slimmer bezels. HHKB is for the autistic dweebs that pay for brand names.

Indeed. I just wanted to think about buying a keyboard, and all we get is this massive flamewar. Guess I'll stick to my ThinkPad keyboard for now and wait for a better thread.

>I did say "AFAIK", based on some reviews I heard.
I haven't seen any negative reviews. Do you have a link?
>>
>>57963610
Meh still a better deal for a 5100

You don't have any other bullshit you wanna make up to defend your rubber dome purchase?

Diminishing returns, anon. Generally, after a certain point, you pay a major increase in price for a minor increase in parameters. That's absolutely normal - the high-end is never a great deal and nobody is saying the HHKB is a great deal - they're just saying they like the keyboard.
>>
>>57963649
Model M, Raspberry Pi, and Windows 10 are the top results. Nice one you fucking troglodyte.
>>57963655
They are forced to like it after spending nearly £400 on it.

>£400

£210 for the regular, £280 for the Type-S, less if bought used.
>>
>>57963684
I see much higher prices on ebay.
>>
>>57963684
So far, I have bought 4 laptops in my life which cost less than that. 2 of them brand new.

I'm just saying.
>>
>>57963693
They are even cheaper here in the US at 215 bucks
>>
>>57954450
>>57963672
It must be the cherry adapters making the different noise.

Mine doesn't sound nearly as clacky as his does though. Maybe he's typing purposefully hard?

Still not sure I'd call the different noise a negative though. Considering the advantages of the software and being able to use Cherry key caps. But who knows. If it breaks in a few months I'll know I bought shit. Seems fine for now.
>>
>>57963693
Ebay only has cheap chinkshit and price gougers on it, why would you be looking there for pricing of anything?
>>
>>57963693
>buying on eBay just after "eBay is overpriced"

If you're in the US, buy from EliteKeyboards ($225 + S&H). Otherwise, amazon.co.jp + a proxy service OR an import buying service.

For example, https://shop.whiterabbitjapan.com/products/happy-hacking-keyboard-professional-2 sells them for $262, which is still mildly overpriced (by proxying manually you can get as low as $230 with shipping).

For the Type-S, add $60-$80 to the price, however keep in mind that even HHKB fans agree that the Type-S is not worth the extra cost.
>>
>>57963716
Where else would I look for cheap rubber dome trash?
>>
>>57963726
(In addition, keep in mind that from December 1st to 25th of every year, each Type-S sold via PFU or Amazon gets an additional key puller and colored keycaps set, which normally goes for $15, for free. Not a huge "deal", but it is there nonetheless.)
>>
>>57963726
Or I could get a BTC for free :)
>>
>>57963740
Good that you phrased it this way - you could! Not everyone is you. For people outside the US/UK, as we've calculated, it's still a notable cost, comparable to Chinese Topre clones.
>>
>>57963726
>$60 for literally just some foam rings worth maybe $5 put on the sliders
Definitive proof PFU are gouging the fuck out of HHKB buyers tbqh
>>
>>57963740
Not here in chink land :(
It would be cheaper to buy a korean topre clone instead of buying the high shipping cost
>>
>>57963740
>for free

Tell me where. Go ahead, tell me. Europe btw.
>>
>>57963764
The point is there's always a cheaper alternative to a HHKB.
>>57963775
I got mine from a secondary school in my area.
>>
>>57963780
Did anyone claim otherwise? Since the HHKB is one of the most expensive mass-produced keyboards available currently, that means almost literally every keyboard is less expensive. However, (a) used keyboards are not available equally and (b) new keyboards with quality comparable to the HHKB are *not* that much cheaper.
>>
>>57963780
>I got mine from a secondary school in my area.

Not gonna get one free, but I have access to these for cheap. Should I get them?

>BTC 5207
>BTC 5197
>>
>>57963795
The best keyboards have to be tracked down. I didn't get my beamspring by paying a stupid amount of money to some slit eyed japanese CEO.
>>57963807
Yes, anything BTC is great
>>
>>57963815
Again, people outside the US/UK/Western Europe have few options for tracking down keyboards. Flying to the US just to pick up a keyboard and avoid the HHKB meme would be beyond absurd, so that rules out a LOT of sources, and eBay is often overpriced.

Who knew that topres could derail a thread into shitposting so fast.

In Poland, all I've seen people get from universities in surplus is Unitra's own reed switches they manufactured in the 70s. Not sure how good they are.

Contact Universities outside of Poland, they're usually willing to deliver.

new thread

>>57963850
No just topres in general. It doesnt have to involve buckling springs, just read the thread
>>
>>57959304
the main point of bucklIng spring keyboards is to have tactile and audible feedback right on the actuation point.
topre can not compete in that regard.
