staggered is bad and a relic of typewriters with mechanical arms.
QWERTY wasn't designed to slow anyone down, but keyboard layout doesn't really matter unless it's a steno.

Speaking of which, why don't you fags use PLOVER?

how would you prove it? finger travel distance? native words in the homerow? people typing their whole life in qwerty vs people typing half their life in some other layout?

except they move diagonally no matter how your layout is, unless you actually make the keys fit your finger travel. and ideally one barely moves his hands while typing.

I'm not sure if I fucked up or not, /g/, but I need to know where to go from here.

I just bought myself a PCB partially done (SMDs installed) and bought a switch plate that holds 80 keys.

Literally every other goddamn google-surface thing only supports the 76-key with the fat keys on the thumb cluster.

Is there firmware/.hexes out there that supports the 80 key layout, or a GUI that does so like the Ergodox EZ has? Does any Anon have such a thing by chance?

Because keyboards, like all products under capitalism, are intentionally designed to be imperfect. You could easily create a keyboard that looks riced, has god tier mechanical switches, ergonomic, and has nice extra functions.
But Capitalism doesn't allow for perfect products to exist unless it's by accident. Think of that old logitech mouse for example, it was so good they had to take it off production and make its successors intentionally shittier, because otherwise noone would ever consider the new products.

Eventually you just cuck yourself into accepting this by pretending boring grey-white mechanical keyboards look "good" because "dude oldschool lmao" or whatever nonsense.

how do you guys like my mechanical keyboard?
>>
Guys I need your help.

I spent $130 USD on a Corsair K70 Lux RGB. Within two days of owning it, the space-bar started squeaking like crazy. People online said to use something like lithium grease, and to not use WD40 or silicone based grease.

So I used a q-tip and applied it carefully. After a couple hours, I was gaming and realized that my character wasn't jumping when I hit the spacebar.

The spacebar has three switches. Left, middle, right. I applied the lithium grease to the left and the right.

The switches I applied grease to are bottomed out. They will not pop up. They are stuck in the down position. Only the middle switch has any feedback.

The space bar is effectively ruined.

Should I try and RMA it?

If I decide to call it a total loss, what keyboard do you recommend?

I spend a lot of time on the computer, mostly shitposting and gaming. I would like to get into programming though.

I've been looking at the Das Keyboard 4 Professional with brown switches. Blues are just too noisy.

Thoughts?

QWERTY, was made to keep the keys from jamming; if too many of the things shot up on one side of the typewriter it would jam.
That's it.
>>
>>57921664

Yeah the middle switch works fine still. I didn't lube it up.

The left and right stabilizers are stuck in the down position. So when I'm gaming, I can't just hit the spacebar with the thumb on my left and, nothing happens.

The space bar is pretty much ruined with those two stabilizers permanently bottomed out desu.

>>57921683
Literally don't know man. The squeak was driving me nuts. I think I just used way too much lithium grease. I had no idea it would cause the stabilizers to lose feedback / bottom out and not come back up. Shits fucked man. Just spent $130 (150 after tax) on this thing not even a week or two ago.

>>57921717
This is promising. I'm kind of scared to operate on it though. I think I might give corsair a call and see if they will fix it if I pay them.

Honestly I don't really care about calling it a total loss. I was a little disappointed by the k70
>>
>>57921787
And how did they achieve that? By making commonly used together keys impossible hit right after each other and placing keys to slow to reach. meaning by slowing the typing down.
>>
>>57921794
are they plate mounted? if they are, you can just desolder the space bar's switch and replace the stabilizers

What's the downside of N-key rollover?

(I assume there must be something since they give you the option to disable it.)
>>
>>57927446
Every keypress in NKRO mode drains a small amount of your life force, eventually leaving you an empty husk.
>>
I got my new Ducky One today. Thanks for helping me pick it out.
>>
>>57924237
Can you link me one with dedicated home and end buttons?
>>
>>57927446
>they give you the option to disable it

That's only there for USB because it doesn't actually support NKRO.

The USB spec for keyboards only allows for at most 6KRO. In order to get NKRO over USB you have to break from spec in some way, which can cause the keyboard to not function properly in a low-level environment like DOS or your motherboard's BIOS setup.

Methods vary, such as installing as a composite device made up of 18 different 6-key keyboards. Or as a controller with 104 buttons that happen to map directly to keyboard inputs.

Meanwhile you will never have any issues if you're using a PS/2 keyboard connector because that protocol natively supports NKRO.
>>
>>57927446
It's probably for mac or linux. Some of them don't support full nkro over USB.
>>57927549
USB can support full nkro without issue. Realforce keyboards have full NKRO over USB without issue.
>>
>>57927791
>USB can support full nkro without issue.

Re-read the post. The USB HID spec for keyboard compatibility doesn't support any more than 6KRO, period. The only way around it is to break spec, which is exactly what an "NKRO" USB keyboard like a Realforce does. It doesn't mean a USB keyboard can't have NKRO. It just means it can't do it while following the spec.

A USB HID keypress report consists of an 8-byte array containing one modifier byte, one reserved byte and six keypress bytes (ie: a 7-byte packet). That's it. If you deviate from this format you're on your own for OS support.

A smart keyboard will stay in 6KRO mode until it receives a SetProtocol packet from the host, letting it know the host supports a wider range of protocols. Except some systems do stupid shit like send the SetProtocol packet but then operate in 6KRO mode anyway, or ignore anything past the first 8 bytes in an expanded protocol. Hence why disable switches are a thing.
>>

Realforce don't have any switches. My point is they have full NKRO over USB without issue. It can be done. You saying you need PS/2 to not have any issues isn't correct.
>>
>>57928029
What does having switches or not have to do with it when the standard USB HID packet sends 6 keypress signals as that guy said?
>>
>>57928050
It's plug n play.
>>
>>57928068
Actually you know what, I'm seeing a lot of people online saying Realforce doesn't have NKRO, so I'm gonna need you to prove your bullshit by pressing every alpha key one by one on this and showing a screenshot of them all green.

>>
>>57928029
Boot into a DOS environment (eg: MS-DOS on a bootable USB stick) with a DOS keytester like interceptkeys and try to press more than 6 keys at once on your realforce. I guarantee you it will not work. Meanwhile if you use a ps/2 keyboard with nkro it will work.
Some BIOSes behave the same way, and if your keyboard doesn't disable nkro or have an at least partially compatible extended mode, then you can't even set up your machine.

Not doing that now or probably ever.
>>
>>57928089

Most Topre boards are 6KRO only, including the HHKB. Technically all capacitive boards are natively NKRO but Topre's controllers traditionally only sent the plain-jane 6KRO packets.

That changed around the time they started making the Novatouch for Coolermaster though, since CM actually gave a shit about the controller.

If you want NKRO on a Topre board make sure to check that it's a listed feature or sufficiently new production. I'd assume all RGB boards will have it since they made those specifically to shit on Coolermaster.
>>
>>57928184
>Not doing that now or probably ever.

Yeah because NKRO over USB doesn't fucking work there.

No idea if all Realforce come with it. My RGB has it and I like it. Not a whole lot of use for it over 6knro but it's there.

Browns let you down

Don't listen to him.

They come with dirt preinstalled in the switches so you can get that gritty authentic shop floor computer feel without waiting six months for the board to fill up with grime.

It's a real time-saver.

Not exactly what he asked for, but a great keyboard for 40 bucks and he can use the keys on other kbs in the future

Like other contemporary Cherry keyboards, current G80-1800s have Windows keys, a USB interface and only laser-etched keycaps in light grey PBT or black POM.

Current G80-1800s have Cherry MX Black switches. Earlier models and special variations have several types of Cherry MX switches. For instance, the Cherry G80-1865 has Cherry MX Brown.
