Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Guy in last thread asking about blowing dust out.

I wouldn't use your breath because it has moisture that could maybe damage parts, it probably wouldn't, but I wouldn't do it. You breath is also not as strong as an air can.

Also don't use a vacuum because I've read that it can short circuit parts because of the friction and electricity it creates.

Just go to a local gas station or grocery store and they might have compressed air.

If you angle the can so that it will blow out the side it will minimize the spread of the dust. You should really only do this once a year, if you have animals maybe more often.

This way?
I don't have animals, but I have it on wooden desk and warming the room AC, that cause further dust build up.

Agreed, touch screen accomplishes the same thing as a mouse and will just add fingerprints all over your screen.

Finger print reader will draw more power from the battery and a password will be fine unless you're carrying highly secret data or some shit.

Backlit wastes power and if you know how to use a keyboard is completely useless.

Hey guys, I'm planning on upgrading my thinkpad t400 over christmas. I'm going to get a replacement screen, solid state hard drive, more RAM, and repair the headphone jack.

My plan is to remove the DVD drive and isntall a hard drive in the ultrabay there. My question is the following:

Will the hard drive connected through the ultrabay be slower than the traditionally connected internal hard drive? In other words, should I take the extra effort to remove my old HDD, replace it with the solid state for the OS installation, and use the HDD in the ultrabay as a storage partition, or can I just put the SSD in the ultrabay, install the OS on that, and call it a day? Would there be a speed difference?

I read somewhere that different sized RAM sticks leads to various issues in thinkpads.

Right now I have 2GB of RAM and want to add a 4GB RAM stick to the second slot, would this be okay? I'd rather not have to buy two 4GB RAM sticks, since I think 6GB of RAM would be plenty for me.

I just saw read this in a review of the T460.

>... the T460 is a boxy and heavy device that looks and feels more like a mobile workstation than an Ultrabook.
>The T460 weighs a whopping 3.8 pounds (1.7kg) and is 0.83 inches (21mm) thick. These measurements are reminiscent of laptops from a bygone era. So, if you're concerned about transporting your notebook everywhere you go, or if you want something that can slide into small backpacks, you might want to look elsewhere.

Is this nigger serious? My fucking 13" Macbook pro weighs 1.5 lbs more than that and has the same thickness. It's lightweight and tiny, I toss it in my bag and carry it around pretty much everywhere. I don't think I would want a laptop thinner or lighter weight, the sturdiness feels nice.

Fuck me, modern tech is a mistake.
>>

Honestly though it would probably be better to try and track down a T420 with the 4200M and a 1440x900 screen.

Is there anything wrong with the Nvidia chip?

I'd be coming from a T400 with the HD3470, and while that's dogshit in comparison to modern GPUs it's still nice having the bit of extra horsepower in a discrete GPU versus the Intel HD garbage.
>>
>>57874583
Because the dGPU shares the heatsink with the CPU thus increasing temperature which would be a downside if you want to upgrade the CPU in the future.

Also look up benchmarks, it's barely better than the HD3000. If you'd like gpu power there's the eGPU option.

>>57874583
General consensus is that the increase in heat and power consumption isn't worth it. Personally I'd say it's better to have a computer that's specced better and allows you to do some stuff you're interested in / don't yet know you're interested in without having to upgrade but plenty of people (especially the kind that would be on a niche technology forum discussing it) already have a very specific use case planned so for them it's moot.

There's certainly nothing wrong with the chips in the way that the dGPU T61/p gen are more or less all dead by now, and otherwise ticking time bombs.

A few weeks ago I got myself a Thinkpad T420. I had installed the latest ubuntu LTS with ubuntu tweaks but I had the intention of using windows 7 in a virtual machine for certain things.

After Windows 7 would be "searching for updates" infinitely, I figured there may be something wrong with the VM. So I wiped everything clean and but Win7 on it natively.

However, Windows is still forever searching for updates, and I've looked up which KB files to manually install, but even when I manually install those it says searching for updates on this computer and hangs forever on that loading screen.

Anyone else run into this issue? (the problem persists through different machines and internet connections)

The precision 5000/7000 series seems like a nice replacement for the T420/T430/E64xx. Full powered CPU, dedicated CAD card, nice screen, still sub 2kg. They occasionally show up in the Dell Outlet down here in Australia, and having played with one its feels a lot better than the T450/T460/E7470.

Does anyone here have a recent ThinkPad T460? I am strongly considering purchasing once.

Does it properly support Linux and perhaps a custom bios?
Is it designed well and somewhat sturdy?
Is it worth $800 new?

I am replacing an old hp laptop that is quite simply falling apart, and havn't gone laptop shopping in 5 years, so I know almost nothing. Any advice is appreciated.

From what I've read, use a thermal paste that doesn't require a lot of pressure to work great and replace the fans with the fans from a t430 with a discrete GPU (provided that's not what you already have). Performance should obviously increase, but whether it's worth it or not is dependant on what you use your thinkpad for.

I've got a T420. It has the awful and slow Centrino 6250 (I think) network card. I wanted something faster, so I bought a 7260 off ebay.

I went to install the modified firmware (whitelist removed), and it seemed to work. Or rather, it didn't show anything indicating failure.

Tried to boot up and got a whitelist error.

Here's the problem: I upgraded to BIOS 1.49 already, which apparently cannot be undone. 1.49 was intended to fix a "security" problem, which probably means this whitelist modding stuff.

DAMMIT. So, is there anything I can do? Wait for someone to eventually mod the 1.49 firmware? Is there some way to reset to the OEM BIOS image from the BIOS menu?

Is it a good idea to buy a used thinkpad to use as a server?

I want a little flexibility and reliable storage, so that rules out most of the rasPi crap. And decent mini computers/selfbuilts will cost at least 300.

So I thought that a cheap x2*0 in acceptable condition could be a nice option. Tiny, little power draw, decent hardware options. With a cheap expresscard, I could add a second NIC or 2-3 USB3 ports for external hard drives (which would be the most sensible way to handle storage)

Search for the model number for the panel (LP140WD2-TLG1) instead of the laptop

If its ebay see if you can see this model number on the sticker on the back

Avoid any terminology that mentions "compatible" panel (because then you're going to end up with a panel about as terrible as the T420's stock one)

Also if it's matte in this case, it is a fake. (The M14X has no matte option.) Laptopscreen.com is one to avoid for this reason.

If youre going for function over form you could use a shitload of crazy glue, cut out peices of plastic to fill the gaps and fuse it together with the glue.
It would look messy and the glue will leave that white crap all over the place, but it will hold together

Idid that to rebuild the wiring harnesses inside my x41

Consider anger management, friend. It's just great to be able to take your laptop to the library, to the park, or anywhere really without having to bring your charger, you get fast WiFi or 4G! Also performance is a factor. it doesn't overheat or take 2 years to do anything

Will a core 2 duo thinkpad that supports DDR3 RAM like T400, T500, W500 ect support DDR3L RAM? Will it drasticly increase the battery life or decrease performance compared to regular DDR3 if they're compatible?

Ok so apparently, excessive fan noise could be caused by some problems with the fan bearings.

Since the fan is sparkling clean, and I can't run thinkfan for shit, I wondered :

Do I really have to buy the 80 bucks spare fan ?

Or is there some chinkshit alternative ?

Not really. I get ~80-100mbps on mine. "antiquated and objectively slow" is still a far cry away from what you just said - "awful and slow." Works just fine and isn't slow by any means for the average user.

If you are truly in a third world shithole or the southern US you can power a blowgun off a spare tire then refill the tire at a gas station. Also works with inner tubes etc.

This is an example and there are many ways to do it.

https://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Hausfeld-Inflator-Inflation-MP600000AV/dp/B0007ZJ1IK/ref=pd_lpo_263_bs_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=KM4DP3V7160P7D9G5AQW

Remove the hose and locking air chuck, then connect the hose with the chuck to the handle instead. You can then connect the locking chuck to a tire and use the gun as a blowgun with whatever arrangement you prefer. It's just plumbing.

If you find yourself maxing out ram then it's a good upgrade. Interesting time to buy an X260 though, the new models are getting announced in 5 weeks and it's going to be a total redesign.
>>
>>57889840
I found some cheaper ones, but I don't know what they're worth compared to the brand fans.
Also is it really impossible to change it without removing the heatsink ?

On my T420 detaching the fan from the heatsink was super easy, only two small screws.

>widescreen model
Ya blew it. Not much you can do to that, I'm not even sure if a widescreen T61 board will fit the way the 4:3 ones do. And even then there'd be no point in swapping one in, because the widescreen 15" T60 has nothing that a 15" T61 doesn't do better.
>>
Bought a tablet x230 with a 180GB SSD, i7, and 9-cell battery for $200 and now I'm feeling like I should have looked for something slightly more powerful, like the hp elitebook 8570p with a quadcore i7 instead of the dualcore i7. :(
>>
>>57891478
Are you saying that a new model is better than an old one?

Woah!
>>
>>57891567
No, only that the 15" T61 is better than the 15" widescreen T60. The 15" 4:3 T60 is top-tier due to its 1600x1200 IPS screen, the widescreen version doesn't offer anything special. It's still good, it's just nothing extraordinary. I guess if it's an Intel GPU model you can flash Libreboot on it, but I'm not sure.
>>
>>57891648
Not him but can i get the T60 IPS screen separately and use it on a 15" T61 lid?
>>
>>57891667
No, the 15" T61 only comes in widescreen. You can only put a 14" 4:3 T61 board into a 15" 4:3 T60.
>>
>>57891695
So i need to buy the screen (because fucking nobody sells an IPS T60), a spare T60 and a T61 mobo to get the glorious 4:3 IPS with SATA2?

>>
>>57891736
Look for a T60p rather than a regular T60. Your best bet is one that doesn't list the screen specs, because those who do usually know what they've got and charge accordingly. All 15" T60ps left the factory with IPS screens, although they weren't all 1600x1200, 1400x1050 is still decent. You'll have to be patient for sure, the higher-end machines weren't terribly common to begin with and they certainly aren't common now. Your relatively cheap UXGA T60p is out there somewhere. It just might take some searching before you find it.

I have a feeling the redesign might be good. The P50 is a good sign. It has a lot of traits of the older thinkpads (top hinges, touchpad buttons, etc)
>>
>>57891736
Yep. This is a common mod known as the T601F Frankenpad.

Other than that I think you can get SATA2 on T60 using Middleton's BIOS

>>57889344
Retail or private server? I have a friend with the same spec, stock UI/minimal addons, and its still playable in 25 man raids (Cataclysm). I had a E6430 1366x768/Quadro/i5-3210M using LUI, Legion can get pretty laggy and hot in 15 man+ raids/world bosses, but 5 mans and general questing are perfectly playable (90-110fps constant). Same for Cata and Wrath, but the drop is lesser. Mimiron25 on 3.3.5a had some major fps drops, but that fight is quite graphic intense.

All of these are with low settings on everything but rendering distance (good), borderless window
