Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

vice city was the shit

since these threads are usually blog posts anyways, i'll share something

my first thinkpad is a t430 with 1366x768 which is what i am using right now and is my main pc

i bought a 2nd one that was cheaper, only 4gb of ram from a refurber, but it had 1600x900 res

i just booted it for the first time with ubuntu and put them both side by side, and i couldn't believe it. all this time i had been using these shitty 768 panels, i had no idea it was this great of a difference

This aint much of an expensive hobby
The only expensive ones were the G40 and 380ED
Rest were under 50$ Each with upgrade parts included

The x62 looks really cool, if love to have one, but at the same time i kind of like the limitations of these older thinkpads. Keeps things simple, also keeps parts cheap, 1gb sticks of ram for shit this old is like 3$, pentium M's and shit cost nothing

cheapest if you buy ones that are missing parts or have something broken, never bios locked ones of course but the standard "No HDD, no OS, no ram, etc" is much cheaper and the parts are cheap too.

They make decent shitposting machines.

but its able to play everything on the right of my desktop here

I bought my first Thinkpad this week, but I know this feel to an even greater extreme. I've been using a 15" Acer for about four years straight, but last month I got my hands on a Chromebook Pixel LS that just made my eyes explode when I first saw it.

My priority is to get a higher res screen on my T420 once I upgrade its RAM and put in an mSATA.
>>
Enjoying my X200 but decided I wanted something a little bigger and powerful for longer trips. Copped a T430 i5 3320m with 4gb ram and 500gb HDD but no charging cable (offered less for no ram/HDD but got denied). Was $125 a decent price for this and will my X200 charger work? Looks in good condition, just has some scuffs on the lid.

Sure.

- Upgrade ability
- Linux support
- Ease of repair

You can't get these deals anywhere else. If you can find an equivalently specced laptop chances are you won't be able to upgrade it, linux support will be spotty and you'll have to contend with shitty hardware design and also you won't be able to repair anything due to unremovable batteries and ram/hdd that are soldered to the motherboard.

Beware of updating the BIOS on the x201, as it has been reported that this may cause an MEBx error (requiring a keypress on boot, further implications still unknown). A solution to that might be upgrading the ME firmware itself afterwards, but unfortunately the ME firmware update seems "upgrade" the AMT botnet too (such as adding remote access via wireless in addition to ethernet). Pic related is the version history of the ME firmware for the x201, the possible fix to the main BIOS update side effect marked in green.

Here >>57848284 you have an example what might happen if you update the base BIOS on an x201 (you might end up with a ME error and then be forced to update the botnet firmware too to get rid of it). Dunno how great such risk is with the x220, but yea, just so you know. With 2010+ Intel shit, generally caution and mistrust are advised.

This. Not installing the driver obviously won't disable the botnet, but then again installing the driver doesn't make any sense either if it is your private-owned laptop.

Hey /tpg/, I am looking for a 12-13" laptop to serve as my new daily driver, I got tired of lugging around my T420 + powerbrick.

What I am looking for:
- decent screen (>1366x768)
- robust
- 2 SODIMM slots
- good battery life
- performance at least equivalent to my T420's i5-2560m
- good linux support is a must

before you say x220: i am not going to fuck around with soldering custom add-on boards just to get a decent screen

According to this http://hardenedlinux.org/firmware/2016/11/17/neutralize_ME_firmware_on_sandybridge_and_ivybridge.html uncucking the x220 should indeed be possible if you are up to the task of performing the procedure. Once this is done, that device shouldn't be appearing in device manager any further.

You basically have to suck up and get either the X220/X230 or the X201s. X201s is higher res but not IPS and weaker in every other way, or deal with a resolution that you don't want but a laptop which satisfies you in every other way.

>>57850284
You have to get to the X240 before you start getting any screen on the other side of 1366x768. By then it's already too late and tonnes of important features have started to drop off.

Can't swap the keyboard to a classic, Only one memory channel, no Trackpoint mouse buttons, a low voltage processor that performs worse than the X230 equivalents. Only added feature is the power bridge internal battery.
>>
>>57850446

I am also open the Dell and HP business laptops.
I am not going to purchase a laptop right now before CES, I am hopeful about the X270 returning to the roots.
>>
>>57850463
XPS 13 is probably your best bet, gorgeous laptop, but lacks a lot of the small features that make the X200-x230 special.

New is cool and everything but I wouldn't hold your breath for Lenovo to return features. Personally I also find the idea of buying a laptop new laughable.
>>
>>57849995
>performance at least equivalent to my T420's i5-2560m
A question about that, what's the extent of things you can do with a processor like that today?
I'm looking at a T420 with the same processor and I'm having second thoughts about the processor cutting it. Could certainly be an overreaction on my part though. All I need to do is some front end web development, browsing web (I tend to open an army of tabs though) and watching Star Trek.
>>
>>57850527
Not that guy, but I have the i7-2640M in the X220 on which I am typing right now.

It is fast. For no process is the CPU the bottle neck, always GPU. I can rip through photogrammetry workloads.

Ever since the 1st or 2nd generation of i7s or what have you I've never felt like my CPU was slow, so an i5 should be more than enough for your use case.
>>
>>57850527
I can run a Windows and a Debian VM (with a webserver + DB running) in my Linux host OS with Chromium open at the same time without any problem. I haven't really had any usecases where I ran into performance problems.

Downsides: the integrated GPU is kinda meh, consumes way, way more power than modern processors (I get ~3 hour battery life with a 9 cell battery at 2nd to lowest backlight with normal usage).
>>
in that matter of thoughts,

is the 520m still an adequate CPU ?
>>
>>57850809
For web browsing, multimedia, older games and other light usage, by all means yes. Even Core 2 Duo CPUs still hold their ground surprisingly well. You'd have to go back as far as a Pentium 4 or Atom netbooks to risk daily tasks becoming uncomfortable.
>>
considering I could get a t430 or an x220 for the same price and same conditions, both i5 (2ndgen vs 3rd gen though), 4gb ram. what would you guys choose? which one is more comfy?

I just got the P70 personally and I like it pretty well. I bought it maxed out and the performance in both my video edits and in gaming is very good. The keyboard is the best feeling I've used in a modern laptop, not up to classic ThinkPad levels but still good. Tons of I/O, removable battery and solid build quality. Battery lasts 9.5 hours with basic web browsing on lowest brightness.

I've only had it 2 weeks so we'll see how it works out long term but so far I don't have any complaints other than Lenovo glacial shipping speed.

You need a 90w charger, fairly certain the x200 comes with the 65w one. I think it can charge on the 65w but it underclocks the processor to 800mhz or something like that. You'll definitely want to get a 90w one off the internet no matter what.

I'm seriously considering this. Should I sell my gaming PC for a PS4 and a nicer Thinkpad?

I can dock my thinkpad and it will act as a desktop and I can get work done there then if I need to game do it on the PS4. I will miss my steam library but it's distracting me so hard.

I failed my first semester because I kept getting distracted by games and it also has distracted me from making music.

no

Keep your gaymin' PC and install Linux on it ONLY. No dual booting Windows. You'll be less inclined to play video games because of the somewhat (for the lack of a better word) 'tedious' setup in order to actually play them. However, you'd still be able to play the occasional game via Wine, PlayOnLinux or Steam.

>Not having any form of discipline

I don't think selling your gaming PC will fix any problems. You'll just find other things to distract you from school.

Learn some discipline, it will not only help you now but when you've got a job as well (unless you want to spend the rest of your life rotting in a cubicle).
>>
>>57855772
That's very true. Literally the only thing holding me back from doing this transition is my love for Overwatch competitive and playing games with my friends.

All my friends play PC games so it'll be sad to let it go but thinking about all the productive and happiness I'd get in the long run makes it sound worth it. Reading over this it literally sounds like a drug addicts story.
>>
>>57855863
I think getting rid of the gaming is the first step for me I think though. I understand what you mean, if I had enough discipline I could just cut down on gaming.

But the thing is that I've been pc gaming since I was 6 so it's extremely hard to keep myself away from it. If I handicap my options to play games I think that could effectively make me stop.

Video game addiction is a real thing, man.

Overcoming it is extremely difficult, but for starters, ask those friends of yours to engage in other activities you might find enjoyable.

You don't have to give up the vidya, though. I still play Dota 2 every now and then (ranging from once a day to about three or four times a week). I'll play one or two matches which is about an hour and a half each session. I'm not familiar with Overwatch enough to know how the matchmaking works but try to restrict it sensibly. Learn some discipline.

Don't completely drought yourself of it to the point where you feel severely depressed without it, though.

Not sure about battery life. Although I've heard that Windows is notoriously shitty for battery life; the Thinkpad is no exception. Try running Debian on it and see how the battery life is then.

Ubuntu for out-the-box pen functionality, but you make most Linux distros pen-friendly through the right configuration.

>>
>>57857658
Oh that's actually very simple to explain.

If selling used laptops was in any way relevant to your monthly income you would try to spend as little time per unit as possible to maximise the amount of units you can sell and maximize your profits/time you put into it.

And in before you complain about "good service brings back your customers", it doesn't apply here.
"Brand loyalty" doesn't exist on e-commerce portals.
People buying online rarely give a shit about purchasing from the same guy again if someone offers them a better deal.

I clean my shit before selling it online because It's not my source of income, I want to buff everything as much as possible to attract a possible customer and get maximum one-time profit.

But If you were to put the same amount of time you put into cleaning a single item into a whole shipping container of laptops you'd quickly realize it ain't fucking worth it.

I am using X240, it is powerful enough for anything programming related short of neural network shits. Make sure you upgrade to SSD and RAM to 8GB and you are good to go.

Heck, I even used to have Asus A46CB with i3 3217U for the same task before switching to this meme.

About the x220, the standard screen is already pretty outstanding. (I have a x200 and I tinkered with a x220 recently)

In my humble opinion, the only possible improvement is that IPS panels suck your dick.

It's not that AMT itself was cracked, much rather some methods were found to disable certain significant parts of ME while (apparently) leaving it oblivious about it.

And Intel's law department probably would issue a statement friendly reminding that unauthorized tampering with ME/AMT (such as reverse-engineering and/or subverting/circumventing/disabling some of its core fuctionalities) is in direct violation of their rights, patents, terms, and licenses, and could result in legal liability for any parties involved.
>>
>>57863417
They can't, that would be illegal in the US
>>
>>57863417
There have been several court cases that make it perfectly legal for people to reverse engineer their own devices, Intel legally cannot do anything about it as long as said hacks aren't being sold for money

No idea. It must be legal if it hasn't been shut down.

I think it means paying money for the hack itself, e.g. no info on the hack is available for free

Have you checked to make sure a service or process isn't making the cpu work harder than usual? Are your temperatures high?
When you say loud fan noise, I'm not sure if you mean the fan is constantly running on high, or of it is making an inexplicable noise, like a buzz or whine or something.

It's a translator. I need a stable AF link between devices. Any even really good usb-com will lose some data. It's fine for regular use but not in my case. My old IBM works just fine, but it's like 15 years old and struggles with modern applications.

Yes all msata ssds have the same form factor.

Dunno, i just remember kingston because of the shitposts and because i remember their speeds were crap when comparing benchmarks against other budget ssds, even against kingdians that sound like a kingston knockoff.

Does blowing on those exhaust vents a good idea? to remove dust?
Or I need to vacuum it?
>>

Blowing into it with a air can would be fine, don't forget to blow into the bottom vents of your laptop.

But if you wanna make your laptop completely dust free just open it up. It only takes like 10 minutes to take the backplate off and on.

Never done this before and I'm afraid I'd screw it up and render it useless since spare parts aren't available where I live.
