Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Got the P50 from the mail boys.
Pretty nice beefy computer. It's actually my first Thinkpad as a regular device, and it's not bad at all.

>Keyboard
Surprisingly good. Not IBM glory days, but better than most laptop keyboards. I've only used flat keys for laptops, so the curved keys feel like heaven, especially spacebar. Makes it feel like a desktop keyboard. Trackpoint is best mouse interface for a laptop.

>Display
I didn't go for the 4k screen, but HD still fine. Not quirky artifacts or anything.

>Software
Usual win10 faggotry + A little bloat from Lenovo. Updates, a little rocky at first, turned out fine in the end. Drivers are ok. Probably going to try out Xen hypervisor on the thing later, but this'll do for now.

>Xeon + Quadro
Xeon processor is probably a meme, but it was the only option for getting the quadro m2000m.

Haven't tested out the battery but will tomorrow.

To the anon that sold me his x220. That "install gentoo" txt file made me chuckle. So because of that I'll make it a personal mission to install gentoo. I initially planned on installing Mint but I figured why not.

I have a T430s and basically the speakers are pretty shit - at least in terms of the low end. Volume and high's are fine

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04

Is it possible that I might be missing a driver or something or is everything fine and dandy and the speakers on the T430s are just trash? I work on a T540p at work and the speakers, including the low end, are surprisingly really good (for laptop speakers of course)

Retail or private server? I have a friend with the same spec, stock UI/minimal addons, and its still playable in 25 man raids (Cataclysm). I had a E6430 1366x768/Quadro/i5-3210M using LUI, Legion can get pretty laggy and hot in 15 man+ raids/world bosses, but 5 mans and general questing are perfectly playable (90-110fps constant). Same for Cata and Wrath, but the drop is lesser. Mimiron25 on 3.3.5a had some major fps drops, but that fight is quite graphic intense.

All of these are with low settings on everything but rendering distance (good), borderless window

I picked up an X220, and have been using it for a year now. It's a great ultra-portable, amazing for note-taking with the new battery I picked up for it.
But now I've run into a huge issue: the TN panel seems to have kicked the bucket; sometimes it works if I manipulate the lid just right.
I'm going to try to check all of the connections, but if that doesn't do the trick I might just put in a nice IPS display.

Anyone got any experience with this type of issue on a ThinkPad?

I haven't used a physical disc in years at this point. Digital distro, USB sticks, and good old fashioned piracy have killed the optical drive.

I haven't bothered adding one to any of the last 2-3 PCs I've built even though they are literally like $20

If I ever desperately needed a disc for something I could just use my laptop and either transfer the relevant files or just make a disc image real quick. An optical drive takes up a shitload of space for pretty much no reason in a laptop though, it's no surprise they're being phased out.

If you mean removing each and every key cleaning it, and then replacing it, then I wouldn't bother if it's a laptop keyboard. Just order a new one and be done with it.
>>
>>57894112

>>
>>57894159

>>

Just make sure you flush the keycaps in clear water afterwards so all soap is off before they dry.
>>
>>57895156
Not op, but there is really no additional detail. Its just shiny and really weird feeling because of how smooth it is. Replacement stickers are $5 on ebay so you can just replace it later if you do decide you don't like it even more.

Chiclet keyboards are only popular because Apple made them a part of the Macbook line.

They only did that because you can squeeze a couple extra mm of space out of the vertical measurements of a laptop if you use a shitty island key layout.

They only did that because for some reason retards around the world decided that their laptop needed to be one third of an inch thick, meaning it has shit for battery life and is fragile as fuck to the point where dropping it from 12" onto carpet causes catastrophic damage.

Chicklet keyboards are literally retard tier.
>>
>>57895296
Chiclet is garbage. There isn't much more to say about it really. If you're deluded into believing otherwise, apparently you're just one of those who >>57895255 (dubs speaketh the truth) is talking about. Also, >>57895263.
>>
>>57895329
what are the 2 keys beside the space bar and the one beside right alt?
>>
>>57895366
>Chiclet keyboards are only popular because Apple made them a part of the Macbook line.

Unfortunately. Those type of keys were originally invented a cheapskate alternative in the 1980s, but failed because consumers weren't a bunch of sheep back then and recognized them for the garbage they were. Then in the mid 00s Sony tried to use them with their Vaio line of laptops, but afaik it wasn't hugely popular either. Finally Applel managed to get us all down the shitter. I'm afraid the same thing is probably happening with the audio jack right now (Samsung supposedly is planning to remove it too from the S8).
>>
>>57895329
I've got a beater X201T that I usually have with me in my backpack. Never was a fan of taking notes with laptops, but it's handy in other ways.

However, if I already had a T series, I would probably just use it.

You supposedly have to use oem batteries on the X230, btw.
>>
>>57895403
Toggling character sets I'd presume (but an actual user of a Japanese keyboard will know better).
>>
>>57895366
>Chicklet keyboards are literally retard tier.

They are somewhat better suited for the average person who clumsily hunts and pecks with just two (possibly sausage) fingers from above the keyboard. Touch typists using the proper homerow technique will find chiclet keyboards horrid, but sadly these days everyone is forced onto the lowest common denominator (minorities are only significant in a sociopolitical context).
>>
>>57895366
Apple took a basic idiot tier concept of thinner is better, and it worked, at least up until now.

It's what happens when a computer company becomes a fashion company and it's only real competition for normies is utterly shit tier Windows.
>>
>>57895422
I know ivy bridge laptops are OEM batteries only but Isn't OEM the best? Or it doesn't make a difference and lenovo wants to fuck people?
>>
>>57895473
I touch type on chiclet keyboards, and I think the isolate shape isn't much of an issue.
I think the real problem with most laptop keyboards is that they have a short travel.
Thus, it would give less feedback, and feels like shit to type on.
I've not had this problem with business laptops though, since they have an adequate amount of travel on their keys
>>
>>57893152
you can't flash an x230 with a custom bios, you'll want the x220 or the other **20 models if you wanna do that
>>
>>57895329
The keyboard difference already isn't an issue. You can swap out the X230 keyboard with the X220 one.

Hence, X230.
>>
>>57895053
>>57895218

>>57895542 is right. I haven't used the Dell one but I can tell by your comments that none of you have actually used a newer Thinkpad's keyboard. I know how it looks, like it's chiclet garbage, but using it actually feels nice. Doesn't feel like your typical Mac chiclet at all. The keys curve inward, like regular keyboard keys, possibly moreso than the keys on the old Thinkpad style. The key travel distance is great (as long as you arent using X Series or Carbon or Yoga).

The typing feel is objectively more responsive than my T420. The keys pop up and down a lot snappier, it's not as mushy. The board itself doesnt flex as much. I think the travel distance is higher too, since the keys don't have sides to them. I make a lot more typos ever since I switched from the X230 keyboard to the X220 one. I switched solely for the 7 row layout, which is a legitimate detriment. But for the rest of the keys, the modern Thinkpad one is actually damn good.

You can't judge by looks alone, I'm afraid.

I unironically like the key mechanisms of the newer keyboard better than T420/X220 era. I don't know why people meme them so much. They feel goddamn mushy as shit compared to T60 and earlier. Modern Thinkpad keyboard key feel is much closer to those.

Those were very exciting times when legimately better and better shit was hitting the market constantly, giving substantially better performance and/or entirely new possibilities.

Since a decade or so actual progress is minimal or even negative (quality drops, changing better concepts for worse, marginal performance improvement, botnet implemented everywhere, walled-in gardens, etc.).

The era from the 80486 up to the Core 2 was the best time for the PC, since after that it has been a steady decline.

I realized you can order both the SK-8845 and SK-8855 from Aliexpress, so they're not as rare as I initially thought.

I'm not really interested in the newer chiclet style, although I like its compactness.

But I'm hearing very mixed opinions about the older ones. Some love theirs, others say they feel like a cheap toy. Does anyone here have any experience with them?

Hi /tpg/, t60 fag here again.

I just wanna know your personal pros and cons with it.

And like is it good for installing linux?
>>
>>57897331
CPU goes up to T7600 (2.33 GHz), but that one can get a bit hot.
You might be able to install a T500 fan (which is more efficient and lower noise than a stock T60 fan).
The RAM is upgradable to 3 GB usable (the T60p supports asynchronous dual channel, so 2 GB + 1 GB will work in dual channel, dunno if it's the same for plain T60 too.
You should be able to purchase an docking station quite cheaply, it will give you 4 more USB 2.0 ports, a DVI port, and a serial port.
There's a PCMCIA slot which can be used for some upgrade.
If the keyboard you got there is not your native, it's recommended to swap it out (plain US ANSI keyboard is probably the best choice if you can use it).
If the touch pad is worn, you may get a new sticker for it, or swap out the whole palmrest.
If you only got a 65W power supply, you should get the 90W one, as it will charge the battery quicker and, most importantly, will allow your system to work at full speed without a battery installed (it's recommended to remove the battery if the laptop has mostly stationary use).
>>
>>57897331
Also you should recalibrate the battery so that you can see it's current wear level is, and have more accurate battery charge level readings.
To do this charge the battery until it is 100% full, then reboot the system, press F1 to go into BIOS, disconnect the charger and let it just sit there on the main BIOS screen until it discharges all the way and shuts down. Once it does, wait about 5-10 minutes, then connect the charger (don't turn the laptop on yet though) and charge it for long enough that you're sure it's 100% charged again. Then boot an OS again and all your wear and charge level readings should now be recalibrated for maximum accuracy.
>>
I need to try and source one of the square pieces of plastic that you find in between the rubber trackpoint cover and the trackpoint itself. I was cleaning and it must have fallen out as I can't find it. It's for an x230.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
>>
>>57897406
>>57897468
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, but luckily everything is in near mint condition and it is actually more silent than my t500!

But I am going to do what you told me and recalibrate the battery through bios.

Thanks, anon.
>>
>>57895627
I thought you could with an SPI programmer and SOIC clip, at least with Coreboot.

I'm going traveling in a couple of months and I was thinking of picking up another thinkpad for the trip. I'm currently posting from a x220 but I don't want to bring it with me becasue I love it too much and I don't want it nicked or broken.

I know /g/'s opinion of the newer "chink"pads but I've been looking at the x121e, x130e, x131e etc. due to being designed for kids and schools.

My thinking is that there're gonna be loads available and they are designed for kids to drop and generally treat like shit. Good battery life and small.

Whats /g/'s opinion?

Nobody had a similar experience?
Could it be the mobo failing or something?
>>
>>57896239

Mine does this almost every time I boot it from sleep.

I changed the power settings so it hibernates instead of sleeps, and this fixes that issue, but then it still has other little issues, so I have to make it a point to power down or don't let it hibernate. Pretty annoying.

Also, about one in every ten boots, it fails to load its own audio drivers.

I have no idea why these things happen and I've found no useful resources on the internet to diagnose the problem.

I have the same issue of a blank screen on my T410 running Xubuntu, but only when putting it to sleep through XFCE's methods for it. I need to change to a TTY and kill my display manage to fix it. Sleeping works fine with "systemctl suspend" though so it doesn't really bother me.

That's more doable. 2720qm seems to be the recommended quadcore to put in a T420, though. You can probably use that one without issue though, since it's the same clock speed.

Hypothetically you can upgrade to an Ivy Bridge processor which would get you the iGPU boost you want, but you have to flash Coreboot, which is no simple process. A Sandy Bridge quadcore is just a simple drop-in.

Is the eSATA port on the T420 is not powered, right?
What do you use it for?
I'm thinking of getting this
http://a.co/jkBD5K7
>>
>>57899713
The x121e and x130e are cheap and replaceable I know but I think the x131e was made specifically for schools.

They have "bumpers" around the monitor and have a LED to show if the laptop is connected to the internet, so teachers know who is and isn't using the web while in class.

I think they would make them quite strong and durable due to how schools budget for IT. If they had to replace like 20 of them after 2 weeks they wouldn't be a option.

The only reason I'm looking at them is because they always show up on auctions when schools/colleges close down and they go cheap. If they can last years or months before the school closes under heavy use then they sound pretty sturdy to me.

Now, that's lucky indeed. Last time I obtained a T60, the cooling system was wrecked and had to be repaired.

Another thing is that if you currently have an optical drive in your ultrabay, you may obtain a HDD caddy and keep a second HDD there. It's one of the definitely recommended upgrades which I forgot to mention earlier.

>>
>>57901917
Well good thing that the T420 ultrabay can be hotswapped then.

Get one made for thinkpads because it has that thing on the back that allows you to secure it or take it out.

I'm looking at it's configurations and it's not bad at all. Do you guys like it because of the old IBM design? It's keyboard layout and feel?
>>
>>57900641
Now this is low quality shilling.

Aliexpress suspended my account when I been trying to buy things and it takes forever for things to arrive and when they do you never really know what you're getting. At least ebay is straightforward to order it may take a week to get your money back but you end up getting it if you don't get the product.
>>
>>57903017
The T420 and X220 are the suggested models because they're the ones with the keyboard and design of IBM's models, the 430 and 230 have ditched the keyboard and most of the favourable design conventions in favour of a chiclet keyboard.

Any news on that T420 FHD IPS screen mod?

last thing I heard was that the guy selling them last year stopped because of reasons...

guys, how can i diagnose what's cause a t410 to turn off unexpectedly ? Since some time I have just windows, but I think this didn't happen with Mint. It just shut downs and then when I power again no problems or errors, also nothing in event log

Hows a T450 with 16 gigs,hd screen and original warranty for 500 bucks?
it really seems a good deal to me,even though i like 15' screens but the t5serie cost a lot more.
What can be upgraded? i mean like an m2 ssd or an ips screen.

Sorry I was sleeping. It's a Lenovo Fingerprint USB Keyboard. I think it's an older sibling of the Preferred Pro. Pretty mushy as you would expect but better than the cheapest Logishit. Plus it has a fingerprint reader which makes it comfy to login to Windows.

My working laptop is a T460S, and I really fucking like it so far.
i7, plenty of RAM and a beefy SSD. I can actually just run VMs with all the terrifying shit kept there, instead of ruining my computer with oodles of middleware shit.

Do you also enjoy endlessly upgrading your Thinkpad?

I had started with a mid-specced T420.
>i5-2520M, 4 GB RAM, 80% 6-cell, 1600x900, 320 GB 7200 RPM HDD, worn out touchpad sticker and trackpoint nub

In the last 1.5 years I have bought:
>96% panasonic 9-cell, docking station, 240 GB OCZ SSD, Ultrabay caddy for the HDD, new touchpad sticker and a lot of spare soft rim trackpoints, external monitor (Lenovo 5:4), Lenovo keyboard

Next purchase:
>single 8 GB RAM module (for future 16 GB upgrading)

Long-term plans:
>donor machine/spare parts, mSATA SSD, i7 CPU, USB 3.0 expresscard adapter, external GPU

How does it sound? What's your roadmap for upgrading?

Work might make me need 16GB, palmrest has a couple of cracks, screen has a chipped corner, one of the rubber feet fell off, slice died, might want to get a dock, screen starting to ghost.

ello tpg, i thought id get your dick hard with no pictures

i was reminded of this project because i finally got paid for it, my boss wanted a laptop, didnt know what to buy, he was gonna pay 250$ for a beat up hp with a celery and 2gb of ram at a pawn shop

so i built him a t410, buying parts online, as many new or refurbished parts as i could find, including all new body panels, brand new screen, refurb motherboard
but i didnt have the chassis parts, or any screws, so, working in a large machine shop with shitloads of cnc machines, i made my own with leadfree ecobrass
my god it looked pretty. The insides of this machine were mainly brass, finely cut out to minimize weight, i even added custom frame pieces to increase durability, including a box around the screen edges, one along the bottom of the palmrest, and custom cable harnesses

on top of custom made brass screws, i also got some rubber sheeting on the water jet cutter and made custom screwhole inserts to make the bottom of the machine entirely smooth

the inside of this laptop, looked better than any turboriced desktop build

and he'll probably never notice until he realizes that the laptop outlasts him, or takes a bullet for him, or he can use it to beat his kid or whatever with no damage

no pictures because this was all at work where im not allowed to have my cell phone, let alone a camera

just thought i'd share, hes pleased, im pleased, and im gonna do it again to my T42 whenever i can, to show that off
ive done something similar with my R30, because the harnesses inside and the hdd caddy were nonexistent, so i made my own with a 3D printer, but i think a full brass reframe and such on my t42 would be fucking fantastic

Got you covered m8, that's sort of my current T420 setup.

I know i could upgrade the CPU even further but seems like the quad core 2720qm is the best one i could put on this thing without reaching housefire or throttling issues.

The only thing left to max it is the 1080p IPS mod.

How does one into using the trackpoint?

I've got the t460s and seriously, been trying to switch from using the trackpad to using the trackpoint since about 3 days now.

I've got that program that lets you use the middle button as a middle click and allow scrolling simultaniously.
So far so good, but scrolling feels completely inconstistent, I have to sometimes press really hard on that nob in order to scroll more than like 2 lines per second, other times it feels fine and smooth.
This leads to pain in my index finger from the constant trying to push it harder.

Wtf am I doing wrong? Is the trackpoint just shit at newer Thinkpads??
>>
>>57918781
Also my sensitivity is already at max, yet the movement seems slow as hell to me
>>
>>57918781
Treat it like a clitoris. At a very early point in the 'hardness' scale, it is too much.
>>
>>57918836
While being more gentle to it, the cursor movement is so slow, using the trackpad seems way faster. It lasts like 2-3 seconds going from bottom left to top right.
Is that normal?
>>
>>57916100
>Don't use VGA, because it causes eye cancer.
If you have a shitty cable that is. If you have a nice thick well shielded cable then the picture will be good. I have a CRT monitor which goes up to 2048x1536@80Hz and has only VGA inputs. With a proper cable the picture is good (even though details are a bit tiny at a resolution that high.

Anyway what's with the stupid and vehement hate against some older standards lately? Is this board full of underages now who have never used Windows older that Vista or 7 on their own computer?
>>
>>57918873
not the same anon, but yes, that is normal

it may seem annoying at first, but you learn to like it. eventually you realize it is actually amazing, it mimics the precision of a mouse. have you tried to do slow, steady movements on a trackpad? good luck with that

but the trackpoint allows for any kind of use case. need to do something quick, use the pad. web browsing, typing documents, reading, you use the point
>>
Are trackpoints irreplacable on an x201? It won't come off and seems like it's glued to the small stick it sits on.
>>
There's a thinkpad t400 in a local pawn shop for $70. Buy?

Do I get X220 with an i7 without an SSD (but I already have a spare one) or a X230 i5 with an SSD but for $280?

>>
>>57918982
Still, why is scrolling such a pain in the ass with the trackpoint? It's completely inconsistent, moving the cursor itself is smooth, but scrolling seems like going 5 lines per second, then suddenly 10 lines and then 2 lines per second. All while pushing it with the exact same force?

>I will have a throwaway sim card with unlimited data soon. Plus there's nothing really interesting to put in that slot anyway, if you already have a beefy sata3 SSD.
I'll admit though, that I'm not really sure if I'll do it, because I already said that I'm not travelling with the x220 anyway. It's just the only thing that actually adds functionality. A slower, more expensive additional SSD won't help me a bit. Is there anything else I could use the slot for?
