I've been dual-booting Ubuntu GNOME and Manjaro GNOME on my test laptop for a couple weeks, trying to decide which I want to use as my first main Linux distro on my main laptop. I've fallen madly in love with pacman and the AUR, though I've been told that I shouldn't go with an Arch-based distro as my first. What do you think? So far, both distros have been working fine - though sometimes Ubuntu GNOME gives me a "system program problem detected" message on boot which... I THINK has something to do with my graphics drivers. Though I've never noticed anything acting out of the ordinary.
Also, I'd try Fedora 25, but it doesn't have proprietary NVIDIA drivers, and the free drivers for my main laptop's graphics card don't work well.

Arch is a hobbyist distro. Basically anything other than Debian, Ubuntu or Red Hat are hobbyist distros not meant for serious use.
>>
>>57849656
Ubuntu's equivalent of AUR are the PPA's.
Fedora's equivalent of AUR are the COPR.

The important difference being both PPA and COPR build the packages for you and you don't have to compile them.

Fedora doesn't have any proprietary software save for binary kernel blobs because they're owned by redhat, which is US based company and they have to respect retarded american patent system.
There's a 3rd party repository for Nvidia drivers for Fedora.

Go for *buntu.

I've also heard that Ubuntu is unstable with pretty much any DE except Unity. Thoughts on this?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Does anybody here have experience with using Ubuntu with a Lenovo Flex 4, or a simimlar '2 in 1 laptop/tablet'? Can you point me in the direction needed to get Ubuntu to recognize when im in 'Tablet Mode'? When i was using win10, it would go into tablet mode when the screen flipped passed a certain angle, like 180 degress or something and it would disable the keyboard and trackpad so the key wouldnt get pressed while it sits on your lap or table. I spent a few hours googling last night with no success. Any advice at all would be appreciated. Ill probably end up having to ask on an IRC or something, im really hoping this wont be too much of a hassle.

Honestly, I don't know what to do any more. HOW can the SOURCE file change after making a copy of it somewhere? As far as I know, its hash (sha1) shouldn't be affected by metadata, right? So how does it change?!

you know it's just a file with a special extension that has text in it right?

No, I meant source as in the file that's being copied. Basically.

>rsync /dir/file /newdir/file
>check the hash of /dir/file
>it's now different

I'd expect the new hash to be maybe changed due to corruption (hardware I assume?), but not the file which was being copied.

How do you manage software you installed from source (with the "make" command)? Like keep them updated, resinstall or uninstall?

You package it for your package manager. You don't just do "sudo make install".

better use your package manager, just use gentoo if you compile from source a lot.
if it isn't in your repos then just check in once in a while to see if there are any updates on github

Ok, my mom is a teacher and slightly tech literate, but the other teachers keep messing up her work PC with their malware ridden USB sticks.

I'm just curious why people hate on ubuntu and call it bloated?

I'm running 16.04 on an old thinkpad with a 120gb ssd and 8gb ram and all I did was install unity tweak, ncmpcpp, vlc, and a few other things. Tweaked the appearance and launcher and disabled the amazon botnet

I've never experienced lag or issues at all. It's the most seamless and lightest feeling os I've ever used so I don't understand why people call it bloated? systemd-analyze has it as 16second boot time

I have gdb installed and have build the project with the debug configuration.

If you press the button I have marked with red on my screenshot here, the "instruction-wise-debugging"-mode will be toggled and the assembly for each line will be shown.

If you press the button again, the assembly will be hidden again.

This works in my VM with ubuntu and on another laptop of my friend
>>
>>57851243
It doesn't do that in my version, it's the latest one so maybe they changed something.

also, do you need an IDE for Qt or just for C++?
If it's just for C++ then using a simple makefile for compiling would be a lot easier than fucking around with an IDE. I don't think Qtcreator is that good for plain C++.
>>
>>57850629
leave the source directory there and go back and sudo make uninstall and then delete it, and download the new source and reinstall. For slackware this is the best option for new software that isn't on slackbuilds.org, like the newest version of icecat.

fat doesn't support permissions at all, so the files get 'given' permissions, which defaults to what you were using (root), you need to override them if you want something else
sudo mount -o loop floppy.img floppy -ouid=1000,gid=1000

np, keep in mind this isn't permanent, in other filesystems that support unix permissions, you can make permanent changes, but fat doesn't, so the only way is to provide permissions at mount time (or change them with remount, you should read up on remounting, it can be very useful, you can change mount options without unmounting)

do not use genkernel. it is much better to configure & compile your own. try to get your USE flags right first time, or you're in for a lot of pain.
i personally found using GPT & UEFI to be harder, so if i were you i'd use MBR & legacy boot.

your first gentoo setup is going to be slow not because you have to compile everything, but because you're going to have to compile many things multiple times as you find more flags you didn't think to set

Sure thing buddy.

Pic related is a list of all GNU software.

Just check if your installation contains these and remove them.

Make sure to find and implement a proper replacement for GRUB before you start removing everything else, depending on your skills (i assume they're null - otherwise you wouldn't be asking here) it could end up being quite a challenge to get everything working properly and it would be a shame to waste time removing everything only to end up with an unbootable system after removing GRUB.

Bear in mind that removing ncurses renders useful tools like wavemon, htop, cmus, ncmpccp, mutt unusable.
>>
>>57854158
You need to install gentoo, stall, void, or similar. You need musl libc or uclibc and busybox.
>>

gentoo and void both include GNU software. It's the systemd that they have a beef with.

for a GNU-less Linux distribution Alpine is probably the only choice
>>
>>57854505
it doesn't have to be GNU-less from the beginning as I'm willing to even rewrite software if necessary. or i could just replace it with software from alpine.

>i'm assuming all the software has non-gnu alternatives or this could go on for quite a long time. i'd have to write the essential programs myself.
well for starters you can start writing a replacement for GCC.
clang is yet to be able to compile the Linux kernel.

and considering that you use gentoo, a compiler that's able to compile the kernel is a must.
>>

>>
>>57854535

>>57854554
that's not true. Linux kernel is a project independent of GNU and FSF. An operating system based on Linux is not necessarily a distribution of GNU OS. Android is a good example. Alpine too.
>>
>>57854535
the better question would be "what is there to like about gnu software"
>>57854550
i wouldn't need to since clang already exists.
i fail to see how this would stop me from achieving my goal of a GNU-less system.

not really. you could literally compile every single package off-site

Basically, for a long time I dual booted windows with Mint. When I used Mint, I found there were few advantages of doing so since I used it the exact same way I used windows. So, I went ahead and installed awesomeWM. This meant that although I literally couldn't do anything at first (it took me so long to figure out that the graphical package manager was called mintinstall, that sped things along), every time I wanted to do anything (connect to a network, change the volume) I had no option but to sit down and learn how.

And so it was that I gradually learned Linux. This is what my configuration looks like right now, which I think is pretty alright apart from the godawful icons which won't change for some reason (the icontheme works fine in xfce4 and .gtkrc but awesome doesn't like it).

Theming firefox was a big hurdle, I based it off a userstyle called tinycss but it didn't work at all out of the box for me so I had to learn css to fix it. I've still not managed to remove that seperator before the menu button, so if anyone has any ideas...?

but yeah. r8 my rice

it wouldn't stop the more dedicated ones though

that's absolutely pathetic.
no-one on the internet that doesnt know you cares enough to search an entire country to find you, and i can assure you no-one even cares to do any dumb analysis on your 'speech patterns'

i wouldn't be so sure of that.
you'll get more careful when someone finally finds all the threads you visit and logs every single thing he can find about you

I would just like to interject for one moment. The operating system you are suggesting for me to install, and rather commandingly might I add, will in fact, not directly solve my current problem at hand, and will actually cause me to ask further questions about the difficult process involved in installing it. Gentoo is a very nice operating system itself, but I'd rather you directly assist me in my quest to solve my current predicament.

I understand that many computer users run the Gentoo Linux operating system, and I realize they may enjoy it greatly and are not currently experiencing the current problem that I have whilst using my non-Gentoo operating system. Through a peculiar turn of events, I have noticed an enormous amount of users make the "Install Gentoo" suggestion, but many of its users are not aware that this suggestion, in most cases, is actually not an "easy-fix" to every single computer-related error.

There really are reasons for installing Gentoo, and there are people using it, but it is just for the few users who choose to compile their own source code locally according to their chosen configuration. Gentoo is just another operating system: the problems I am experiencing will not undeviatingly be solved if I make the choice to install it. All these so-called "Install Gentoo" suggestions I am noticing should cease immediately.

your message is simply a fake
it's not even your own original thought
how can you think it has any worth if it was merely implanted into you and you didn't realize it yourself?
you're just another sicko on the internet trying to scare an anonymous poster

you can't claim your post has any value if it wasn't something you realized yourself

that 10% would give you the info "speaker of American English"

nice false flag there. i won't fall for such simple tricks. that's like adding a mistake in "color" and saying you're british
i'm not trying to hunt you down as we speak. i can't be certain about you though. you don't seem normal by any stretch of the imagination. you might think so, but it certainly isn't the case

try this

clifu() {
q="${1:?}"
q64="$(printf '%s' "${q}" | base64)"
curl -sL "commandlinefu.com/commands/matching/${q}/${q64}/plaintext" | sed 1,2d | tac | sed 1,2d | tac
}

also needs a search argument like
$ clifu fortune
