Need some help, I want to ditch Windows, but I need my USB WiFI dongle working. I can figure out the rest

I have the driver on my install usb, all it needs is to be make then
sudo install make
then
modprobe mt7662u_sta
. But when I enter the directory and run make, it doesn't make. There is no clear error message at all. Not sure how I can work around this. Maybe I need GCC? But I can't get it because no internet. I tried making it in a Ubuntu VM and transferring it to my usb, but I have a feeling it won't work

>>

>>57858438
Forgot to mention, I assumed you're running a debian based distro so i made a debian based package.

What I would advice you to do first is to install the package in a VM installation. With VirtualBox and USB passthrough you should be able to test the device as well, though I'm not 100% sure.

Basically I would try to see if the package installs properly and doesn't throw any errors.
Once it's installed, the kernel module (mt7662u_sta.ko) is in /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/

HOWEVER

If it doesn't work, what you'll need to do is boot up the distribution you're using in a VM, do the compilation there and then generate a .deb package with checkinstall

https://wiki.debian.org/CheckInstall

I'm linking debian wiki because ubuntu documentation doesn't even mention the possibility of generating the package without installing.

My autism wants me to use as little RAM as possible dedicated to the booted distro so I can save more RAM for compiling.
>>
>>57858606
If you have really low ram then use clang for the packages it can compile. It takes up a lot less of it.
Or you just want to dedicate more ram to the compiler? It won't change much if you have a shit CPU.
The gentoo "live cd" is probably less demanding than about anything else but it doesn't have clang pre-installed.

I'm not trying to pretend that linux is mainstream but you can't do this because of how the general populace knows to at least try for these sort of positions or jobs because they all want to be that one guy copypasting code to escape their other shit job market. This is why "web developer" has lost all meaning, we're currently seeing people also do this for "full stack", not yet for MVC or the like so I can still win points with that.
>>
>>57859223
No idea if they've changed this, but according to the Tor spec basically what happens is your DNS request is forwarded to the exit node you're using and that node then does the DNS lookup for you https://gitweb.torproject.org/torspec.git/tree/tor-spec.txt?id=f9e111ead769d48441d99b52039ef0ccbd3f2c62#n1475

DNSCrypt is a DNSCurve implementation that uses TCP so you can tunnel it through Tor though you need a socks proxy to do so: http://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/1503/dnssec-dnscrypt-over-tor

This all depends what your goal is. If you set up your own DNS server (or register for a public one) and it's got your identifying marks all over it pretty pointless in then tunneling dns req to it via just letting Tor handle it as it usually does with a remote DNS lookup.

Just install this and use as advertised https://subgraph.com/sgos/

I'm on a new install of arch, and I can't seem to get audio to work properly.

I have configured alsa correctly (I think) and when I run
 speaker test -c -2
I hear static coming from both speakers/sides of my headphones.
Problem is that I'm not actually hearing any audio from firefox. Is there any way to fix this?
The only things I have muted in alsamixer are some mic sliders. My PCM is on full, but it doesn't even have a mute/unmute icon.

Hi /g/, I've scoured tons of forums all over the place trying to fix this issue, but I can't seem to find an answer.

I'm running Xubuntu 16.04 LTS. I'm trying to do a GPU passthrough and it's being a total bitch.

At first I couldn't get vfio-pci OR pci-stub to work, but eventually I got pci-stub to actually work for my GPU, which is an AMD R7 370

I finally got pci-stub to work, and just use a script to unbind pci-stub from the GPU and bind to vfio with a script. (it's complicated but it's the only way I could get it to work)

When I run my VM with qemu, I get this error:

qemu-system-x86_64: vfio: Unable to power on device, stuck in D3

It repeats 4 times. I tried using disable_idle_d3=1 in vfio options, but it doesn't work.

Why is it stuck in D3 mode? Is there a way to force it out of D3 mode?

when I run lspci -nnk, my GPU says the Kernel module is radeon. I've tried my best to disable the radeon module, including:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and doing: blacklist radeon and blacklist fglrx (just in case)
radeon.blacklist=yes in grub
modprobe.blacklist=radeon in grub
install radeon /bin/false in blacklist file
/etc/modules-load.d/blacklist.conf and doing blacklist radeon blacklist fglrx
/etc/modprobe.d/00-radeon.conf and doing blacklist radeon (in case it was just a parsing issue)

but none of those things worked (and yes, I ran sudo update-grub, sudo update-grub2, and sudo update-initramfs -u respectively.

What is even weirder is that when I run dmesg | grep pci-stub, I get a message saying it's claimed, but my GPU is still on and was being used by the OS. I had to force enable the onboard graphics to be used to get it to stop doing that .-.

Would anyone be willing to try to help me? I'll post more info if needed
>>

I obviously wouldn't have invested this much time if I was looking for a quick and easy solution (aka, don't want windows as my main OS)

well it's just linux with different packages/PM. it is possible, look into installing pacman on another system I guess, it is not advised to do it this way, it's probably easier to back up important data and then do a fresh instal as the point of arch is to be lightweight and customisable

I don't recommend replacing systemd on Arch, 'cause many package uses systemd.
You have to patch (or create your own) init script in order to make it working with system init other than systemd.
If you're going to use system init other than systemd, you better stick with other distro that doesn't use systemd by default.

Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system “Linux” is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.

arch is a meme because it sells itself as simple and lightweight while it really is the opposite
that said, arch is a nice distribution, you just need to ignore community memes like "the arch way", "kiss", "simple", "minimal", "lightweight"
if you do this, and don't act like an asshole (like a huge part of the community), arch is not a meme

Can't pretty much any distro that comes without a DE be considered "lightweight"? I'd call default Debian lightweight because it just has the absolute bare minimum needed to setup a system easily and thats it.

Well, even Ubuntu can be lightweight if you choose a netinstall. A lightweight system makes
a) the base install
b) the package management
Arch has a minimal base but very bloated package management, so basically, when you get a Debian or Ubuntu netinstall and install 600 packages, your system is still more lightweight than an Arch install with 300 packages.

So all I really want is access to the AUR, i3-gaps, a nice bar like polybar and a nice lock screen. I'm buying a whole new computer soon pretty much because this one is on its last legs so installing Linux is just a way of trying to milk some performance out of it, and for learning.

I'm considering attempting to install Arch but it seems pretty complicated. Seeing as half the reason I'm doing this all is to learn Arch seems like a good choice because you have to go barebones with it. I feel like Antergos and Manjaro are like easy mode in a way.

Fedoranon reporting in.

Pretty much like >>57862083 , I have Fedora 25 installed in a "just werks" machine.

Good alternative to Debian based distros. I enjoy having new kernels. I think fedora is one of the distros that is closer to the kernel development. Responsible dev-base, lots of money-earning people that actually depend on their work done well.

At least, as far as I know.

And for those who want proper package managing.
And for the possibility of switchable graphics.
And for those who want upstream GNOME.

I don't bully people for using Ubuntu, is also a "just werks" distro, but I just don't like having the same kernel for 2 years, or risk using a non-LTS that runs an "untested" kernel that only Ubuntu managed to integrate wrong.

You know what GNU/Linux really needs right now to grow?
It needs the really autistic and intelligent developers to design a "user friendly" distro.
No fluff, forget aesthetic. Just functionally acceptable, in practice and on paper, for new users to keep their installs LONG TERM without feeling overwhelmed, and without having to be told to learn bash.

I know all those really intelligent programmers just want to work on their minimal terminal based stuff. But I think we really need them to do the job instead of the people currently working on "user friendly" stuff.

We need them to take their autistic focus and come up with a standard for graphical configuration utilities and tools. Well coded, efficient, simple, lightweight, modular, applicable to any distro, and completely spanning just about every single thing new users would ever want to configure or customize on their Linux machines or re-generate config files/fix issues with most common problems they run into.

No this isn't something I need for myself, I do everything in the terminal and am happy with it. I just sometimes feel sorry for new users coming to Linux. We try to tell them it's getting better and more user friendly these days, but it's really not.
Even when they have the tools they need, the people who they would be getting help from have never used those tools at all and have no idea what to tell them. So we just tell them to pop open a terminal and do it our way which just frustrates them.
>>
>>57869319

And that's how it should be. You don't even know how happy I am when I get something like that for Windows-related problems instead of those long exclamations about where to click.

>>
>>57869367
Exactly.
I haven't used Ubuntu in forever either, but from what I hear it's still pretty much recommended to just reinstall every 6 months when the new release is out instead of being able to roll over to it.

I mean, fucking windows 95 had a more coeherent set of user friendly configuration tools, and windows was able to upgrade tons of people (against their will) to windows 10 without too many issues.
Why doesn't Linux do this stuff?

I really don't think people mind ugly GUI's. It doesn't have to be stylish, it just has to work well and be standardized.

>>57869405
Read what I said about Ubuntu above. But also I know you prefer it that way, and so do I. But don't you think it turns away a lot of people?
Even if it's still easier for them to paste commands too, I think it's even just a psychological thing. Knowing that they _have_ the same graphical tools as anyone else is more comforting than feeling like they're all set up with a set of GUI's that literally noone but them is using. It's gotta be a bit frustrating.

Anyways, this is just my opinion on what needs to be done to really push Linux forward

No. I strive towards making my operating system as much of a poorly hacked together heap of junk as it's possible.

Linux is a kernel, there are fucktons of distributions based on it, and not all of them are community based.
Some are from companies, and some are made for companies.

And what exactly do you expect to gain from bigger popularity? What good did Androids popularity bring to it?

I have a 256 GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. Devoting 200+ GB on a root partition seems wasteful, no? Since Linux installs games in the home partition. How do you guys set it up?
