Reposting my question on one of the deleted threads:
I upgraded from Fedora 24 to 25 but after rebooting grub only listed 24, and went into a reboot loop when I chose it. I reinstalled 24 afterwards. If I want to try upgrading again should I edit the grub config file somehow or get a program that does that?

Hi /fglt/
I'm using Linux and for a school project I'm forced to use "prezi", which is an ugly giant flash-based browser application for making shitty meme presentations. Anyways, it's repeatedly crashing, telling me I'm running out of memory when I'm obviously not, I have plenty free (using ~1 GB / 8 GB total).
Is there any way for me to tell firefox to allocate more memory to flash? Or am I fucked?

What are the advantage of tiling window managers vs non-tiling?
>>
>>57777316
Increased autism, looks so much better in desktop thread, etc.
>>
>>57775856
Revert to the old readline version/package. If you have to boot into a live system and revert all it's associated files manually.

The new package you wanted to install depended on the new readline and everything else on your system depended on the old version. That's what I think happened anyway.
>>
>>57777389

>>
>>57777389
I was mostly hoping for someone who uses either or both to give some perspective on the advantages vs disadvantages of each.
To me I find that I'm almost always tiling my windows but just in the primitive left/right fashion in most non-tiling window managers I use.
So I'm thinking I might want to take the plunge. But I'm sure almost anyone can sympathize with needing more reasons for making change.

I don't particularly feel the need for vertical tiling. But that may just be because I'm not on a tiling window manager.
>>
>>57777136
you really have a craving for those (you)s, huh?
>>
>>57777449
I see the advantage of tiling and I do things that mirror tiling WM's (e.g. fullscreen emacs, bound keys to split windows 50/50 in xfwm), but I don't like tiling WM's mainly because 90% of GUI programs really aren't meant for tiling, so the window manager has to stretch them often awkwardly

>>57777569
Well I'm fairly certain that with as volatile Americans are they'd flip on the subject when correctly informed.
There's a very slim minority who actually thinks governments breaking their own laws is a good idea in the general case. And among those who don't quite a few would be imagined to support the idea of pardoning people based on popular opinion.

But really the stance of being opposed goverments being asshats and supporting pardoning snowden is rather hypocritical at its core. He did break the law.
>>
>>57777676
>ranger

>>
>>57777682
The only reason there is a %30 percent that want Snoden pardoned is because they incorrectly believe that they were having their constitutional rights violated, the mass media should have persecuted the prick instead of pretending he was standing up for our rights.

Anyone "correctly" informed would support the treason charges and Snoden's execution.

I've been using Fedora on my laptop for 3 years now. When I tried to boot my laptop today which has Fedora 23 on it, my laptop went to the bios screen. At first I thought my hard drive died or something and decided to plug in an ubuntu liveboot flash drive. It booted fine, and I was able to navigate to my Fedora partitions though the terminal. All my files were there and no signs of corruption, but when I ls in my boot folder there are no more files there. Anyone have any idea what happened and how I can make it work?

>>57777940
Well, if you act on those beliefs in a way that harms the nation of the United States of America, then you are an enemy of myself and every other patriotic American whether they recognize that or not.

Dissent and anti-American sentiments lead to terrorism and violence.
>>
>>57777983
>then you are an enemy of myself and every other patriotic American whether they recognize that or not.
So you've established that your word is supreme to every other american and that their opinions on things should be disregarded entirely because of your natural right to assess and dismiss their opinions?

>if you act on those beliefs in a way that harms the nation of the United States of America
So I cannot make any deal with the united states of America where the objective judgement of outcome has been overall negative to the united states. At some indeterminate point in time or at any point from that decision to the end of time?

What ever the united states of america actually is.
>closed mindedness

I find it an interesting but rather unreasonable opinion to hold. And overall if this were the official and actionable stance of the US you'd certainly see world war near immediately.

You won't have much storage but you might be fine if you wish to do light work.

Cheaper than that you could buy a used chromebook or a thinkpad. Perhaps a normie didn't like it and decided to sell it.

I'd say go for it. Just look into the process of restoring the firmware in case it voids the warranty to sideload linux on it.

Might be the best thread to post but it's mostly relevant.

I'm looking to buy hardware. I already have a ThinkPad t420 that I use for programming, but it's kind of bulky. I was actually looking at either second hand X Series think pads and netbooks but I'm looking for recommendations.

-Great out-of-box Linux support
-Minimum 4 hours battery life
-Compact size (<4 pounds preferred)
-Affordable ($200-$400)

Asking here but it Linux support above all the highest priority for me, since I would like to use it for mobile programming and remote shell access. I plan on installing a Xubuntu on it.

Lads,

My department at University has a lab with a bunch of Ubuntu laptops. You take them off a shelf, and as soon as you connect them on one of the ethernet ports, they automatically switch to Windows Server where we can log in with our University credentials and have access to our student drive, internet etc. as well as the software useful for our department pre-installed.

How would I go about reproducing a similar setup at home, e.g. if I were to run an office/home business/internet cafe or whatever?

I think that's a shitty excuse, because once you adopt systemd, you're kinda forced to use everything that comes with it because of its design.

But you cannot have systemd on a system WITHOUT those "services" and "programs" to come with it.
You cannot have udev without systemd.
You cannot have polkit without systemd.
You cannot have a multitude of core programs anymore, because they make it depend on systemd for no real reason at all other then to be cool and be part of the systemd cool kids club.

You don't have to use the majority of those things in your picture. In fact, I'm not using the majority of those and most likely neither you.

>Why do i nee all of that from my init program?
Systemd isn't an "init program", idiot. Go to its website and read the documentation and you'll see what it is. It's a collection of tools developed under the same roof. Someone made a comparison to BSD and how no one complains about their core utilities being developed under one roof. I don't know enough about that to dispute it, but you should consider informing yourself before making such claims about systemd.

I don't even know why I'm trying to show some idiot why they're being an idiot for the nth time again. I guess it just feels good to rant and call someone an idiot justifiably.

>>57785899
>what is the benefit of using something more complex to set up like Arch?
there are no real benefits for you

All distros have pros and cons. Some distributions like mint or ubuntu have more cons than pros.

Most software you'll want to install will be available on the biggest distributions, so which distro you use isn't a big deal regarding that. Then it's more a question about how much disk space you want the distro to use, do you want to install and set up everything yourself or want a working desktop right after installation, do you care of the what the init system is, do you want the latest software or prefer something "stable" where you'll have to update your system every 2 years ? and the list goes on.

If you're looking for something minimalist, look at debian (stable or testing according what you prefer regarding release cycle) and archlinux.

Other distributions usually comes with a DE and ready for use

note that debian installer ask you if you want to install a DE and which one. Only problem is that you'll need to enable community and non-free repo and maybe install one or two driver manually

about arch, AUR is nice. Everything else is similar to other distributions.
