Let me explain.

The meme people are falling for:
>Arch Linux - A simple and lightweight Linux distribution

The reality:
Kernel bloated with literally all modules available, packages twice as huge as on other distros, the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.

Manjaro or Debian are fucking baller. Mostly just depends on what package manager you want. I prefer apt so I run Debian Sid.
>>
>>57748086
>>57748146
Well, I tried Manjaro myself in a VM to see myself (tried the bspwm edition, which is actually great), but the thing with telling the users to turn back the system clock to access the forums ... here Manjaro lost for me.

Debian sid is nice.
>>
>>57748088
So basically GUIX and maybe some ultra-retro distro that still uses sysv, acpid, and other things that shovel standard OS functions onto bash+the coreutils?

Every other distro made GNU less of the OS and more of a second class citizen, like the UNIX part of OS X.
>>
>>57748200
Use the FAQ: https://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.en.html
>>
>>57748220
>GNU is the OS because we say so

It's a partial userland. If it's not essential or the default method for carrying out functions that are part of what defines an operating system it's not part of the operating system. It's an accessory.

GNU on a typical linux distro is about as significant as GNU on windows.

I like Fedora better because you can get updated kernels without having to wait 6 months.
Also, the distro developer environment is more related to the kernel developer environment.
Also, tired of Debian's package manager.

Fedora's package manager is almost the same, but I feel that it handles dependencies better
>>

I'd choose Antergos with GNOME over Manjaro. KDE is just way too heavy.

Fifteen years ago I could maintain full control and knowledge over my computers, now everything is overcomplicated bloated shit. If I'm looking to switch to linux for privacy reasons, would it be a bad idea to use Ubuntu (or its variations)?

I know there's a switch for the spyware stuff, but my minds been trained to not believe that hitting a button to tell them not to spy on me isn't enough of a guarantee, after using windows.

But at the same time I want the most seamless experience possible so I don't flip flop between windows and linux for very long.

I tried mint but I had issues getting my VPN to work. Thinking of dual booting ubuntu and seeing if I can get it to work on there.

Reposting from last thread because I'm retarded and still haven't found a solution.

I'm trying out Slacko Puppy right now, and I'm having a minor issue; I also can't seem to find any mention of it elsewhere.

When I close my laptop lid, the system does not suspend. Instead, it looks like it suspends and immediately resumes when I open the lid back up. When I search for any combination of "slacko," "lid," and "suspend," I see people trying to get it to *not* suspend, so obviously most people have their laptops suspend as normal by default.

I'm on a refurbished 2006 HP laptop, so there's a very solid chance it's a hardware thing that's out of my control (for now at least), but I was wondering if there was anything else I was missing. I don't have a lot of experience with scripting, but /etc/acpi/actions/suspend.sh seemed to be in order. Previous Linux distros and the Windows OS it came with suspend fine when the lid closes.

My main PC has VC++ redistributable broken. It can never properly install it completly and therefore some progras or games can't run.
My main issue is that I want to play some PS2 games with PCSX2 but I keep getting the api-win-ms-ctr-runtime error or whatever.

After struggling with several solutions that ended up being useless, it seems the only way to fix this is by running the Linux version of the program.
I tried installing Gentoo, but as expected I'm a fucking retard that can't understand shit.

So here's the question: what's the easiest, fastest and retarde-proof way to boot a Linux-based SO, install PCSX2 in it and I imagine also the XboxONE controller drivers to be able to play some vidya?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It actually depends on the language the program is written in. A python program for example could run on OS X and GNU/Linux, while a C program would need to be cross-compiled for each OS.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system

Unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its

Users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is

The kernel: the program

In the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.

Anywhere between 10 to 30 GiBs for / partition. 1GiB /boot. 10GiB /tmp. Twice the amount of ram for swap. And whatever is left over for /home
>>
>>57755140
Well featured installation with few large desktop environments will clock well under 10G.
For comparison sake my run-of-the-mill installation of debian+xfce with few additional bits of software installed is 4,6G

I mean - I always use the default in most installers which is 50G for / partition but that's a huge overkill for your average desktop user i just hate the idea of ever having to come back to it.

/home should be whatever you feel like since it's your storage partition. If you're just planning to fuck around editing text and not keeping large files 50G for everything + swap should be plenty

This is actually pretty important in servers.

If you don't, and someone gains access to your system under a user with no real privileges. They can basically spam mktemp (or their own script) to fill /tmp with a bunch of empty files inside folders inside folders inside folders... inside folders. and then rf -r /tmp/* is not going to be able to remove it in a reasonable time

Also to be able to set up noexec and nosuid.

nigga. I only have 2GB for memory. I ain't doing that shit. Imagine a server running for years with 50 users sshed at any one time. I'd imagine the tmpfs partition you made would grow rather rapidly.

And that makes it a lot more harmful if someone decides to login and run that mktemp script a million times.

Why are you implying that the system is going to be this insecure?

Hell why dont we just put in a 1tb of ram to make sure you notice this issue before it gets out of hand, surly 1tb of space is quickly stoppable.

>>

>Why are you implying that the system is going to be this insecure?
Because unless proven otherwise, every single system is insecure.

>Hell why dont we just put in a 1tb of ram to make sure you notice this issue before it gets out of hand, surly 1tb of space is quickly stoppable.
Are you trying to prove my point?
As a sysadmin, you need to do with what you have. And holding the /tmp directory in memory allows someone to take down your computer by running mktemp on a loop. They could also do other types of attacks, but the point remains the same. Why buy thousands of dollars worth of equipment if you're only going to waste it on being lazy and not doing it right.

>Configure your system properly and you wont have an issue.

And people solved it by using the 'try ubuntu' instead of 'install ubuntu' option. lol

You have three options:

I've already attempted all of the fixes. Most of them are apparently caused by using USBs, I'm burning the ISO's to disks and have tried using USBs.

I even read that installing windows then reinstalling linux can work, but it didn't.

>3. Dive in straight to Arch and install manually. The error messages are a LOT more verbose and in bonus you learn a lot of stuff

I'm installing xubuntu because it's supposed to be an easy and straightforward switch from Windows. Seems a bit counterintuitive to switch to a distro that's considered advanced for my first linux distro.

Anyways, thanks for trying to help. Guess I'll keep looking into it.

Let me interject for a moment. What you are referring to as GNU/Linux is, in fact, wayland/arch/systemd/GNU/Linux. Or, as I like to call it, systemd Plus Linux Plus Some Other Shit.

SUSE has mostly been supplanted by openSUSE which is libre

Slackware is still around but it's Slackware, might as well roll fucking Gentoo or LFS at that point.

openSUSE isn't bad (I use it as a daily driver) but you sound like you'd prefer something more lightweight and oldschool like Bunsen Labs. Generally you probably wanna avoid desktop environments apart from LXDE/LXQT and XFCE

You seem like you're unfamiliar with how to use the internet, but this is all information easily accessible with some footwork, so I wouldn't give up yet.

Slackware is still alive but seriously, just install gentoo

And a very robust firewall.

also includes a bit torrent client that requires foreign IP's send more data to you than you to them first.

Slackware is old, but a very reliable and simple distribution. I love gentoo, but don't insult Slackware.

Yo, I'm not insulting Slackware, I'm just saying I can't comprehend its philosophy

Not in the sense of not understanding WHY they have it, I just don't understand how to apply it, Slackware is an ancient tome of sages to me, shit's fucking impossible to understand

Find a better guide for whatever you're trying to do then

all I got is this old laptop
>>

Can't, I need to follow that specifically
>>

SSH is probably already enabled if you've already completed the install. Connect to it with an ethernet cable and try it.
