Do a regular install first. Hardened doesn't have a desktop profile and you would have to fuck around with having an insanely long list of USE flags copied from a desktop profile.
You can also switch to hardened from a regular install but you'll have to recompile every single package on your system which will take ages if you have a shitty processor or have a lot of packages installed, shouldn't take that long though if you have a good one though.

I'm using handbrake, trying to rip an old dvd (bill bailey dandelion mind). When i select the dvd as source in handbrake it scans all the titles one by one and then does nothing as if ti failed. same for trying to play it in vlc, smplayer and mpv.

I read you cna install libdvd-pkg to make sure the encryption is being fucky so I did that, same problem. I can navigate to the dvd and look at the TS folders and such just fine, so the actual dvd hardware is working properly.

what do? this is in ubuntu.

I want to learn how to make basic scripts. I just switched over to Linux yesterday.

On windows there was a lot of pick up and go easy to use software that made making basic keystroke macros quite easy. But I can't find much on linux for it.

Should I just try and get autohotkey working with wine or what? I don't need to do anything more than hitting a key and having it type a sentence or two.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>>
>>57730666
Let me explain.

The meme people are falling for:
>Arch Linux - A simple and lightweight Linux distribution

The reality:
Kernel bloated with literally all modules available, packages twice as huge as on other distros, the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.
>>
>>57730682
Fedora isn't a freetard distro, pleb.
>>
>>57730704
>Kernel bloated with literally all modules available,
Oh you again. Proves how boring your life is for actively springing on a specefic distro.

The kernel parameters can be set according to your autism spectrum before installation. Not that you would know because you never really installed Arch.

Employed people use a kernel that works.

>packages twice as huge as on other distros,

Wrong. I always give you a simple example: install screenfetch. It's just a bash script. However, debian decides to install scrot as a dependency. The repo of debian is bloated no matter what you do with your package manger, it's not going to change anything on debian repo servers.

>the only lightweight thing on Arch is the non-existant installer.
If you need an installer there is architect, arch anywhere and antergos.

Text installers are objectively far more flexible
>>
>>57730720

Installing from unstable

Let's assume that we're running testing and we want to try enlightenment from unstable. There are basically two methods for installing:

# apt-get install enlightenment/unstable
# apt-get -t unstable install enlightenment

The first will not attempt to upgrade any packages on your system, so if specific dependencies are not met, the install will fail. The second method will attempt to install/upgrade any dependencies. Of course, given the above example, 'apt-get' will ask you before proceeding.

I was using linux mint in a VM for a few months just for pirating stuff without slowing my internet down by using a VPN inside of it. Switched over to using it as my main OS recently. I used mullvad as a VPN service/client in the VM and it was working fine for months, but now that I've switched to using it as my main OS when I try and use it I get disconnected every minute or two. It reconnects immediately.

Any ideas?

So I have this mouse problem under Linux Mint with xfce where when I click the LMB it sometimes double-clicks at random. I've checked the events with xev and confirmed it to be the case. Same thing happens with other mice I have to a different extent (one of them manifest this behavior at every mouse click).
I think it's probably the switch bounce problem (pic related), for which there are software and hardware solutions. This thing doesn't happen under windows with my mice, so I figure windows employs the software approach to this problem by default.
My question is - is it possible to turn on something similar for X in Linux? Or should I just solder a cap in?

I get the
"Error loading \vmlinuz-linux: Volume Corrupt"
when trying to boot Arch(thanks Windows fastboot) and I can't manage to fix it.

I've tried to use the live cd and
mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/boot
where sda5 is my linux partition, and sda3 is the UEFI partition. However it says it can't mount to the sda3, I get an error message:
"mount: /dev/sda3 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3 missing codepage or helper program, or other error"

I tired making sda3 read-write with
mount -o remount,rw /dev/sda3
but that didn't work either since it isn't mounted. Got the error message
mount: /dev/sda3 not mounted or bad option

I've tried to chroot into the install and run
pacman -Syyu linux
but it haven't fixed the problem. Probably because I couldn't mount /mnt/boot.

How do I fix this?

Trying out Slacko Puppy right now, and I'm having a minor issue; I also can't seem to find any mention of it elsewhere.

When I close my laptop lid, the system does not suspend. Instead, it looks like it suspends and immediately resumes when I open the lid back up. When I search for any combination of "slacko," "lid," and "suspend," I see people trying to get it to *not* suspend, so obviously most people have their laptops suspend as normal by default.

I'm on a refurbished 2006 HP laptop, so there's a very solid chance it's a hardware thing that's out of my control (for now at least), but I was wondering if there was anything else I was missing. >>

I think you should try an Ubuntu base. I like Xubuntu, very similar to windows, very lightweight and stable. I run it on my laptop.

Manjaro is also a very friendly and easy to use distro, based on Arch linux, has a similar desktop to Xubuntu. I have had some trouble getting it installed, but once you get it up and running it's rock solid. Very easy to use and one of the few distros that isn't ass-ugly by default.

Also, be careful not to erase Windows when you install Linux. Disk partitioning can be confusing to newcomers. I accidentally erased my backup hard drive once and am still suffering because of it. If you're installing Linux on a separate drive to windows, I advise you unplug the Windows one while installing to be sure there are no mistakes.

Just be careful, and you should probably just press the button that says "install alongside Windows 10" if there is such an option.
