Hey Ive got a bit of an unusual situation here. I'm looking for a pair of wireless headphones for my grandmother. Her hearing is horrible and having her tv on full volume all the time is an issue for anyone who isn't almost deaf. Unfortunately there don't seem to be many reviews on wireless stuff in the wiki's guides.

My budget is up to 300.
I'm in the US.
Source is a tv set.

The comfort level needs to be excellent.
Whatever sound signature makes voices easy to understand.

Really high sound quality isn't important with her hearing. As long as it's decent and doesn't cause issues with understanding voices it's good enough. Also I need to buy an analog to Bluetooth adapter as the tv is a little too old so any suggestions for one would save me some time. It has analog and optical outputs for audio.

mids and highs are helpful for vocals and old age
i dont really know wireless headsets though
if you're doing a bluetooth audio out from the tv (not really sure how that would work) I say just get something that's notorious for highs (maybe some grados?) and do a removable cable on there and plug in a bluetooth receiver. that's a little convoluted but it'd be really sweet to do that kinda work for a gift, i think.
>>
>>57691315
there are several wireless headphones specifically for watching TV, some work by radio frequency, some by bluetooth.
>>
>>57691333
Thanks for the brand suggestion. The tv doesn't have bluetooth so I need a transmitter to connect to it.

>>57691361
Are the radio frequency ones as good as the bluetooth? I had a cheap pair of those a long time ago and the things were awful and highly prone to interference.

I have no experience with them. All I know is the RF transceiver thing plugs into the tv's outputs and doubles as a charging station for the headset. I think bluetooth versions work the same way.

Thoughts on A&K Angie II? Looking for new multi-driver IEMs that doesn't have the splashy cymbols/highs of the Dunu's. They're on sale until the 29th for $1200 USD locally. They were $1500 before. It's cheaper on Amazon but won't ship to where I live. I have some Stax SR-003MK2 coming in the mail for $200~ USD but I have a feeling I want the Angies after. I can always order the Angies next year or I'm keen on ordering a FitEar TG334. Thoughts? I've been looking at the AKG K52, HD202II, ATH-M30x and some Phillips but I'm unsure of what to get. I will use them for gaming and newbie-tier audio prod. (learning).

I also feel more comfortable with Over-ear/On-ear than having my ears raped by an IEM, but if there's no good alternative then, how's the 20$ In-ear Brainwavz? I was looking for the HM5s but I currently cannot afford it.
>>
>>57693138
Hmm the E10s are twice the price where I live ($35A vs $69A) but I know they're pretty lauded. Might scrape together some more change and grab them.
>>
>>57691565
Brainwavs HM5's are your best bet in that budget.
Or M40x with HM5 pads.

You want soundstage for vidya gaems, since that gives you a lot better of a sense of distancing. Imaging is also a factor, but most headphones in that price range are all pretty similar on that front.

Best way to achieve good soundstage is distanced drivers, typically using thick ass pads. HM5's are exactly that. Comfy as all fuck too. They're the standard go to pads for comfy and affordable mods.

HM5's are neutral, and M40x are nearly neutral. Just slightly V-shaped.

Hyper X Cloud Core's + HM5 pads are also an option. They're moderately V-shaped, and have a detachable mic if you ever want that. Built well too, but look pretty ugly if you care about that.
>>
>>57691889
X1/X2's are good, ATH-AD???X series are also great.
558/598's again are also good.
>>
>>57692090
DT-770's
Fucking amazing low end, comfy as fucc velour earpads.
M50x with HM5 pads could work too, but their highs are a bit much, even when compared to beyers.
>>
>>57692354
HD 558/598's are the best bet for open if you can get them for a good price.
Modding 558's make them sound identical to 598's and theyre cheaper.
>>
>>57693059
i liked em yea
i traded for 880s and i like them more though
>>
>>57692533
440's are pretty shit.
Cloud II's are pretty good

440's have abysmal comfort stock, but you can buy replacement pads if you want.
Clouds have Decentpleather pads stock, and include velour pads, but can be replaced with HM5's and others in the future if needed.

440's are also quite bright. That said, their mids are very nice and crisp. Bass is a /bit/ lacking.
Cloud II's are slightly V-shaped, which is okay. The mids are still perfectly clear and present. Bass bleeds a bit into upper midbass.

440's are a lot more portable due to folding properties.
Cloud II's are decently large cans. Theyre built well but that results in them being somewhat unweildly for portable use. Similar to Beyers.

Also, if youre not using the mic function for anything other than shitposting via voice chat, and youre not going to use the velour pads, you can get the original Clouds for a decent bit cheaper. They sound the same too. The 7.1 USB adapter on the II's sucks massive ass as well.
>>
Reposting since I made some modifications and I didnt get many opinions last thread.

I'm probably going to end up purchasing some nice closed cans sometime in the near future. Just scouting out at the moment some good options.

I have a fucking massive melon, so that may be an issue. I've had to use my Cloud Cores on the max extension for them to fit right.
>Sound signature
Decently low end heavy. Prefer good extension and kick rather than raw amount of bass though. Don't want a bright headphone either. No Beyers.
>Past headphones
HD 598's, HD 600's, M40x, MDR V6, DT 770's

Recently sold my HD 600's after I acquired a pair of studio monitors that sound miles better, so that is why I don't need/want open headphones. Sometimes a man just needs some isolation.
All my other headphones I've sold in the past for upgrades or just for shekels.

Currently have Hyper X Cloud Cores with HM5 pads. Sound good, and built well, but I'm getting a bit bored since my studio monitors outdo them in all regards.

You don't really have many options within that pricerange. Best [and sort of only] option is Sennheiser 518. The pads aren't as good as 558/598 pads, but you can replace them if you want.
>>
>>57693995
The Cs version is significantly inferior to the open back version. the only reason to get the 598 is for the soundstage it offers at this price point. The Cs raises the bass and muddles the sweet midrange of the open back while making the highs peaky and nasty. Considering that the 598s were sold for 99 last black friday, it doesn't present a good value for the money.
>>
>>57694070
considering the 558 were $80, the 598 have never presented any sort of good value for money at any discouint.

>>
>>57694108
Yes, the 598/558's are better in some ways, but they are somewhat light in the low end, which it seems what you don't really want.
The 518's are a lot more low end heavy and warm.
And I assume by 'ah700/900x' you mean the ATH-AD series
The AD series is even more bass light than 558/598's

There really are so few affordable open low end heavy headphones.

Except for the part where I said I don't like them. If they had less high end a little less low end, I would consider them again after some ZMF Eikons, but I'd still rather find something more interesting.
>>
>>57694756
M40x are better than M50x. Most of /hpg/ will tell you the same
Both need new pads. HM5 pads are 23 USD on MP4nation, and are the best option.

An even better option is Brainwavz HM5's
Neutral and incredibly comfortable. Costs around the same as m40x with HM5 pads.
M40x are foldable, but HM5's are better built overall.

770's are a good option if you want heavy V-shape, but you seem to be heading towards neutral more based on your answers.
>>
Does rap/pop music still sound good in open headphones? Been considering getting the ad900x for gaming, but I listen to these genres a decent bit, I also listen to a lot of other genres though.
>>
>>57694946
Depends on your sound preference, but the ATH-AD series is quite lacking in the low end, so rap especially might sound quite lacking in body.
You can remedy this to an extent with EQ though.

Might want to take a look at 558's. A bit more low end with a trade off of slightly poorer imaging. Width is still fairly competitive to the AD's tho.

Is the headband snapping issue on the Senn 600 series really severe? I want to get a 650 and that's the only thing stopping me at this point.

I don't have a particularly wide head, I know not to stretch the headband and I'll be bending the metal arms out of the box to lower the clamp pressure (which should in turn take the pressure, and risk of snapping I would think, off the headband).
>>
I have the ATH M50x (and really like them) and just fell for the 598 Cs meme. Are they going to be at least as good sound quality wise? What about using them for producing?

Should I cancel the memeheiser order? (not shipped yet)

Please no ATH M50X hating just because they are popular/mainstream
>>
How does /hpg/ deal with getting cheap microphones to sound decently loud and decently clean on very shitty mic inputs on integrated sound cards (for voice chat, nothing more)? I used to have a Xonar DX which had a pretty good microphone input and I had no issues, now I've got to use integrated shit and the only way to get my voice to an audible level is to use +30dB microphone boost, at which point the background noise is louder than my voice anyway, so this setup is pretty much unusable in practice.

I ended up basically having to use the card itself as a preamp and looping it back to line in to get sufficient amplification with low noise, but having to do this is pretty silly.
>>
>>57695468
I had the same dilemma (except I don't own m50x or tried them) I ordered the 598c and if I don't like them I'll probably return them and get m40x or m50x. How do you like the m50x is the niggerbass meme true or /g/ is exaggerating like always?
>>
http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/can-you-hear-this-hearing-test/
Just did this and I couldn't heart about 15kHz, is it over for me? I've been listening to several hours of music every day for the past several years, I'm a musician, music journalists or whatever. WHAT AM I GONNA MISS OUT ON???
ps. post your aural failings as well
>>
>>57695555

not him but I used to own the m50x. Nigerbass is a total exaggeration. It's definitely emphasized but hardly to the level /g/ memes about. It's within a reasonable level of balance, and it's really fairly tight and clean, well extended, too.

The m50x's true downfall is that has no soundstage at all, it's a very cramped, enclosed sounding headphone. For that reason, I would only recommend them for portable use, I don't think they have a good enough presentation to be enjoyable for home listening.
>>
>>57695559
I can hear up to 17kHz, at 18kHz I can kinda sorta get a feeling that there's something there, but can't properly hear it, more of a "edge of hearing" thing. 19kHz nothing.
>>
>>57695555
Not true at all. They are for all intents and purposes flat headphones. Only when you compare them to other flat headphones you can say bass is slightly emphasized. I would say it's more accurate to claim they are V shaped.
>>

Yeah, that's what I figure. I'm very gentle with my gear so I probably shouldn't worry. I see people who've had them for 10+ years who say it's never snapped on them.
>>
>>57695629
I can't hear a difference even when I know which is playing, so I didn't even bother with the test since I'd be guessing at complete random anyway. I'm convinced that I wouldn't be able to tell when actually listening to music if there was any 19kHz content or not.

>>57695632

Quite some time ago my DT770's fucked up and I didn't get anywhere trying to get them fixed.

So now I'm looking to try something a bit different, thinking of getting the k702's as I've always thought they looked neat.

So I've got a couple questions.

How big of a change is switching to them from 770s (closed -> open) and is an amp needed for them as I just used my Xonar DX with my 770s, and with the impedance being pretty similar between the two just wondering if an amp is necessary.

I'd just get the FiiO E10K if I were to get an amp.

Checklist for retarded(headphone) questions:

We don't know, that's subjective. Some things can be quantified and compared but preference to sound signature, comfort and use cases are individual so knowing what you like is not something we can tell you outright. The purchase advice template is there for a reason.

>>
>>57696695
Honestly I can't answer that because sound is very subjective. To be honest, compared to the Sony, they are not that good. While sound cannot be compared objectively, the Sony have far better build quality and materials. The MSRP for these Sennheiser is just retarded. They have no metal whatsoever, they're 100% shit plastic, and the earpieces have the same nasty velour that's on the low tier Sennheiser like the disgusting Urbanite (which I made the mistake of buying some time ago).

When you get them, take a listen for a few days, if you feel they lack bass or that the vocals feels distant, I recommend you to buy the Sony MDR 1A. If the sony is overpriced in your country (these cost less than 150€ here), take a look at the ath Meme50x or the Ath MSR7 which is basically the same shit as the Sony but with an emphasis on the highs compared to the lows of the Sony.

You don't know what this means. Go learn how to use a parametric first.
>Don't want a bright headphone either. No Beyers.
Beyer doesn't have a real in-house coloration; their headphones are all over the place.
Custom One Pro has way less treble than DT770.

Most closed headphones are small, SRH1540 is out of budget, and I think that T50RP is one of the worst driver you could build a modding community around.

>>57692216
The Dunu has a higher treble peak than most other sets. That wouldn't be very hard.
>Angie 2
Part of the motivation for this new version is likely the carbon fiber weave and mold problems that the old versions had problems with. Simpler shell should be easier to produce.
If its anything like the other JH revisions, it wouldn't be dramatically different in sound. I haven't heard the updated version, just the old one. Didn't really like the old one, but that's me.

>FitEar TG334
Bass and midbass in abundance. Big, bulky earpieces. Solid feeling, but the old version was prone to cracking.
You can tone down the abundant midbass electrically if you wanted to do it that way. Most Suyama stuff has that bass boost thing, if not to the same level as 334.

Got these. Definitely comfortable, and light. I wore them for hours daily. Design doesn't look the most durable, but if you're not throwing them around or going outdoors, they should last you a long time. Sound quality is typical AKG studio sound: sharp highs (a little too sharp with the K612), a little lacking in bass (even from a neutral standpoint), and generally high detail across the spectrum with a flat curve and big sound stage.
Depending on where you're located, there might be other AKG headphones for a tiny bit more, but quite a big improvement in sound.

>DAC
That's probably not what you mean as no headphone needs a DAC.

In-ears, in my opinion ER-4SR/XR more specifically.
>>
>>57697537
To be perfectly honest with you, I would think twice before buying a headphone with round earpieces. Most of the time those will not fit properly over your ears, and the top and bottom of your ears will touch the earpiece, and the additional width will go towards your neck and not make a perfect seal. I had this issue with the Sennheiser Urbanite XL which obliterated my ears in a matter of minutes due to the pressure on my upper and lower ear. Other than that I've always bought 'phones with oval earpieces.

That being said, I'm not sure how big are those circular earpieces on the K series, but if you have large ears keep what I said in mind if you're very picky about comfort.
>>
>>57697537
K612 is AKG's flattest headphone, but not everyone likes flat. It is also their least sensitive headphone overall.
K702 has less treble from 2-6 kHz. Could help with the so-called "soundstage".

>There's the K702 for 40 euros more...
Country? Total price?
40 euros is quite a bit, but everything in AKG's 7-series are pretty much their "best" by many ratings. Detachable cable is a nice bonus as well, but I've personally got no damage or signs of wear on any AKG headphone cables. Admittedly, they're not the thickest cables, so I could see them being a bit more fragile than others.

>>57697594
Also a good point, but the size of the earpieces on AKG's over-ears are huge. Have yet to hear anyone complain about them being too small. I'd be embarrassed to wear these outdoors just because of their size.
>>

So I just bought a new pair of headphones after 4 years and they kinda sound just worse than my old ones. It's more bassier and there's more obvious seperation between insturments but there's just overall less clarity, just tinnier I guess. Dunno if it's because I'm so used to my old ones or what but I feel like I shouldn't be disliking a 4 years newer more expensive pair of headphones.
Old: Sony MDR-ZX500
New: Sony MDR-ZX770
>>
>>57698983
Now to fix that, you should use parametric equalizer like most people who complain about the sound of a pair of headphones they already own.
>>
>>57697129
I'd hope the Sonys are better build quality, they're far more expensive here (finding them for $300 here) so I feel that's an unfair comparison.

What would be a comparable closed-back headphone at a $100 or less price point? Reviews are all over the place at the moment, some saying the earpads feel like shit whole others say it feels better than the SE's. Some people seem to have an issue with it being all plastic, others fine with since it's high quality plastic.

I'm just feeling a bit anxious about these things, don't wanna feel buyer's remorse already without even trying them but I also don't wanna feel ripped off when I could've gotten something better for the price.

>>
>>57702022
DACs have digital shit on them. It's noisy. You need separate power and ground just for them digital components, because when they drain and sink power they shit their noise into it. On another hand, a basic class A amplifier (we can put a decorative heatsink on it being a class A much like shitty tubes that stick out of cases for display) will have no problems with noise except mains.

Guys is it weird that I have a pair of DT770 80ohms and most my music (played from my phone or laptop) sounds low volume when I play it, even at max volume? This is compared to even beats solo3 wireless headphones that I tried and my old M50s.

Every IEMs I had broke down in several months because the cable was worn down. So I thought I'd give bluetooth a try, but I have no idea how to find a relatively reliable piece.

>120 Ohm impedance might be hard for a laptop to power without an amp though
The voltage sensitivity is the real problem with K612, not the impedance. The higher the impedance, the more linear the amplifier will be driving it so in a lot of ways high impedance makes for an easy load.

>>57700596
Yes.

>>57701164
What?

>>57699168
Test of hearing range is mostly dependent on your inner hair cell size and amount, not brains.

>>57702494
Compared to what? Actually, not even necessary to know that as the answer is "no" regardless. Most of them perform worse than cheaper Delta-Sigma implementations(such as Modi). I can't see myself paying more for lesser performance even if both exceed what our hearing is capable of picking up by a hefty amount.

You don't pair DA-converters with headphones. You should get a DAC that does what you need. Method of operation of the converter chip is something you don't need to know, ever.

>>57702587
Class A is the most useless thing when AB can made with such precision that crossover distortion is hard to even measure. Get Class A if you need a heater for your room or just want to buy something esoteric. Yet again looking at the topology is truly not important.

Think of these devices as boxes with signal going in and another one out. The point is to maintain linearity through the amplification(or conversion). To do that you need competent design and all that truly matters is what comes out, not what happened in-between. Whatever steps the signal goes through inside this box is irrelevant when judging how it performs.

>But it dosen't give the dynamic range i'm looking for.
If you aren't lacking volume, I'm sure dynamic range is not what you are limited by in your current Rotel, in every way that term could be understood.

>>57700458
DT770, lower impedance models(32 and 80 Ohm) are fine for majority of devices without discrete amplification.

>>57701411
Bassy criteria is easy to fill, nearly every in-ear in your price range fits into that. Etymotic MK5 is the most neutral thing you can get within the budget but those might not be comfortable. ATH-IM50 is a decent bassy in-ear but the ear-pieces are a little bulky.

>>57702000
HyperX Cloud if you don't want to get an external mic or some clip on/attachable solution like ModMic.

>>57702658
NVX XPT100 is a comfortable closed back headphone with a slightly warm sound. Custom One Pro is a quite decent option out of the one you are considering already.

The Sonys are probably the most neutral but the oval shaped earcups aren't comfortable for everyone and their sound is a little V-shaped with good seal, slightly bright without. 280 Pro is a bit bassy and clamps hard. M50X is bassy/V-shaped with small-ish earcups and many complain about the headband design and lack of padding. K553 is anywhere from V-shaped to bright, depending on how well they fit on your head. Can't recommend them to anyone without auditioning.

Most DJ headphones have a boosted low end, decently rugged, with above average isolation. But then, the most popular DJ headphone is a small, on-ear, V-shaped set.

K550/553 are V-shaped, and kinda terrible.
V6/7506 is flatter, but the isolation is not that high.
Beyer COP sorta works, so does M50x. M50 comfort is just passable, the Beyer should be better.
