OP Question: which software does /g/ trust for encryption - veracrypt after the audit? truecrypt?
>>
I am hosting two websites on one VPS. One domain has TLS enabled through Let's Encrypt. The domain I just configured on the Apache server does not.

From what I have gathered, this kind of setup is a bitch.

I want to turn off the HTTPS on my first domain without removing all the keys and setup (in case I want to migrate the new domain to its own server later).

How can I quickly turn off HTTPS in Apache?

I want to host a purely HTML website, at home, with it's own domain. I know this has to be possible, since companies can register domains I will assume I can too, and as I can give other people my ip and port allowing them to connect to my website. No I don't need perl scripting or php or javscript or forms, no this site will not be having much traffic at all as it is very niche, no it does not even need to be up 24/7 as it will mainly be something I just link to people as it is a niche information center, every website seems to just try and dissuade me by making it sound so fucking hard when in reality I already have an HTML website, and all it takes is a single python3 command to bring it up which is all I need, just how do I get a domain so I don't have to give people my IP, therefore making it more memorable? Do I just contact my ISP?

You can learn to program anything that has a compiler or interpreter. A chromebook out of the box has neither, so no. You have to put some other linux distro on it to do anything with it.

If money is a huge issue for you, I reccomend getting a used raspberry pi, ssh'ing into it, and using that machine to learn programming on.

Secure shell is used to remote access command line interfaces
>>
>>57671894
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Shell
>>
>>57671894

Sure. SSH means "Secure Shell". It is a way of me accessing and using a computer remotely. I open up a terminal window, type in the ip address or domain of the computer I want to access, type in my credentials, and I get a command line terminal window for that machine. The command line terminal window behaves the same as if I were physically sitting in front of the computer typing commands into it.

I use ssh to access my home computer from work, my work computer from home, my media center from my home computer, my minecraft server from home, and my professor's homework server from anywhere.

A raspberry pi doesn't come with a monitor, so if you want to use it you either have to get a monitor for it or use ssh to access it from another computer. If you have a linux machine or a mac, you can use ssh directly from the terminal. If you're on windows, you have to download a program called "putty" to use ssh, but it does the same exact thing as a normal terminal window.

Trying out Puppy for the first time. Holy shit this is running so much faster than Lubuntu was. However, I'm still learning how to get things to actually, y'know, work.

Right now, my issue is the desktop. When I click the desktop, the entire desktop changes. On some themes, the icons just shuffle around, while on at least of of them, every icon but mounted disks/partitions disappears and the background image/color changes. Regardless, it's a pain in the ass. What the fuck is up with that? Is this due to JWM+RoxFiler and I can fix it by switching to a (heavier, but more familiar) desktop environment? Do I just need to install the fuckers or is it more complicated?

Need your help, guys

I built my computer about three months ago, installing two 4GB sticks of RAM. About two weeks ago, I ordered two 8GB sticks so that I could have a total 24GB of RAM.

I followed the manual for my motherboard, which said that Channel A would be slots 2 and 4, and Channel B would be slots 1 and 3.

I installed the two 8GB sticks into slots 2 and 4, and installed the original 4GB sticks into slots 1 and 3. Now, my computer recognizes that I have 16GB of RAM installed, therefore not recognizing the other 8GB.

Motherboard -
Gigabyte GA-B150M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1151

RAM -
GeIL EVO POTENZA 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
GeIL EVO POTENZA 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133

I heard about setting this up properly in the BIOS but I'm a bit clueless on what to do there

i have a lenovo y50-70 touch laptop
recently, whenever i turn it on, the fan goes to max speed despite only just starting up and the laptop not being hot in the slightest. it's really loud too.
i cleaned it inside and out, and it still makes that noise. putting it in power saver mode doesn't do anything either. the only way to stop this is to put it in sleep mode for a minute and turn it back on, but that's getting tiresome.

You should be fine but some parts of your OS might not be happy with it. A reinstall is recommended but not essential.

>>57671765
Small case --> Blower
2 fans running at lower speeds will be quieter than 1 fan at high speed, though it depends on the size of the fan. Link the GPUs you're thinking of buying because there's a few other differences that are important.

>>57672022
Philips SHP9500 if they're on sale, they get really cheap on Amazon and Newegg every now and then. For cheaper I'd recommend the Superlux HD681B or HD681 EVO. Different use cases will have different ideal headphones though. Fill out the form from /hpg/ and post there for more recs.

>>57672222
Nice quads. Depends on use case. Are you using it for MMOs or FPS? Does wireless connectivity matter to you? Do you need/want a perfect sensor? What sort of grip do you use? Do you prefer light or heavy mice? Are you using Linux? How many buttons do you want? Is a DPI switch important to you?

>>57673470
Most screwdriver sets will perform about the same. That one looks fine.

>>57673594
The NVidia shield tablet comes to mind for actual gaming. I can't think of that many tablets that have decent GPUs in them.

>>57673667
Some motherboards, CPUs or RAM sticks won't play nice with different brands, sizes and speeds of RAM.

question about RAM. i have 2 4gb chips in my machine. plan on upgrading to 16gb. theres 2 more slots and the 1x8gb is a bit cheaper than another 2x4gb. does it make a difference if i go with the 1x8 vs the 2x4?

Are you the guy who downloaded it after my recommendation 2-3 days ago?
The website has questionable design but the project is been around for a long time and has a good reputation.
I've used their codec packs for over 6 years now.

If you're questioning the security from other parties, there's a chance that they could exploit a mistake in the codecs to get code execution on your computer (this just happened on linux).
But that's on the codec implementation, not icaros.

Alright I'm going to ask a question that has been pissing me off for over a year. Let me just set this up.

Let's call my documents = (File A)
Within (File A) I have Files B-Z
I go into (File C) and I edit an ever so important document I don't want to lose.

I hit save as because I need a copy of it. It USED to be set where when I hit "Save As" it will automatically offer me to save it in (File C) where I opened it.
This means I could go into (File F) or (File P) and open a file and "Save As" in the same file that I opened it. So if I open in (File F) I save in (File F) easily.

Now if I hit "Save As" it's going to tell me to save it in the last file. So lets say I saved it last in (File F) and I'm in (File Z) now.
In stead of asking me to save in (File Z) it expects me to save it in (File F) because that was the last place I saved.

How the FUCK do I get it to save it in the FUCKING file I opened it in?

I've lost so many (cumulative) hours of productivity opening several windows so I could copy paths or just save it to the desktop and move it later.

So hypothetically if a drug dealer friend of mine asked me how to make his business more secure what advice would you give? here's what I'd do
>make a book filled with code phrases to describe what product is wanted and what quantity
>I'd make him an encrypted facebook messenger client
>make him a script to encrypt strings of text for when he posts about stuff on social media
>I function as a deads man switch, if he doesn't contact me every 48 hours a message gets sent to all his clients telling them to consider him compromised
>backup the code book and client list, deaddrop locations etc. to a VPS in switzerland (all files are encrypted) and if someone doesn't login and enter a code every 48 hours all the contents are encrypted 5 times each with a randomly generated 64 char password then wiped
What else could help him increase security?

I'm considering a new laptop to be my primary device. Can someone help break down processors for me?

The i5-6200u seems good, but is it worth holding out for a machine with an i7-6500u? Will I notice quite a difference when it comes to video editing, or even a bit of gaming?

How about the 7th gen Core processors? Is it worth just waiting for more machines to make use of the i5-7200u's? Any help is appreciated thanks
>>
>>57679182

If you really want to see a difference get a cpu that ends with "Q", that means it has four real cores, which will make a huge difference in video editing. But also the price.
>>

I appreciate the device but I'm after something more lightweight and portable which is why I'm looking into the U series
I don't think I'll be doing heavy editing, but definitely the occasional bit here and there

For the render performance difference look at Cinebench CPU charts.

Does a cpu just need to match the socket type to work?
Bought a game last night and couldn't run it anywhere near the highest settings. Finally going to make the jump from an i5 I got almost a decade ago to a good i7.

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R. Remember buying it when considering upgrading down the road, but things may have changed so much I might just be better off buying a new motherboard as well.
(May also try to make the jump to 4K too)
>>
So, I bought this motherboard (pic related) that doesn't have an HDMI out but has VGA, Display port, DVI and RGB. I bought the Asus VX238 monitor which includes a DVI to HDMI cable (and the monitor does accept HDMI, DVI, VGA and all standard inputs). Should I be fine or will the cable not work (does DVI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI matter here)?

Which Zenbook? I'm a bong so ideally not looking to go past £700, but the Yoga 900 is on sale for exactly that price with an i5.

I was originally after the Yoga 710, which features an upgraded 8GB DDR4 RAM and an i7-6500u but it's £70 more and not as premium.
There's the Zenbook UX360UA which seems decent too but that's also an i5

If you depend on video editing as a source of income get a laptop with a quad core processor with Q in the model name, that you can shove a fuckton of memory into (4 dimms), with a fuckton of hard drive space. Having two computers is strongly worth considering.

i7-6500u or i5-6200u are both sufficient for casual use or getting started with video editing. If you're not making a living off it now, if you're not a real fancy video editor now, a quad core laptop probably won't help you be one. Invest that money somewhere else to get to the point you're using your computer so much you need a serious machine.

Every method to do so works extremely poorly due to the lack of buffering, you see every lag spike. I could look into a way for you to do this, and I know there are ways to do this, but trust me when I say if you try it you'll realise you've wasted your time because it doesn't work well enough. The spikes of lag will piss you off to no end.

>>
>is it worth going from fx8350 to 6600k? In any scenario

Wait for Kaby Lake. The fact that it can decode 4k in my mind is VERY big in terms of future proofing, and its literally just around the corner.

As for if its worth it to go to i5-7600k, yes for gaming as that CPU now bottlenecks quite a few games notably keeping civ VI to 45fps. If you're a heavy professional user, sure. No otherwise. 4K support is an advantage in its favor but 4k HDCP streams aren't numerous enough for it to be worth it on this basis alone.

I don't think you can buy all the components in mobile form factor, and some models of CPU and GPU for laptops are OEM versions that are sold straight to manufacturers and you won't find them in stores or anything

I mean maybe it is possible but I doubt it's as cheap and easy as prebuilt vs custom built desktop
>>
>>57680037
Yes. If lucky you may be able to shrink the current partition on the drive & create a new one without having to move or delete files.

Installing OSes over multiple drives makes it more likely you will get a fucked up boot manager, which is a fixable issue but you have to know how to fix it. Stuff can happen like each drive will have their own boot manager, but each boot manager will only know the OS of their drive.

Most people on /g/ would take the oppertunity to just install a version of windows fresh on the new drive. Getting a version of windows can be problematic. Then just move old files to new drive or keep files on old drive.

Plenty of SSD vendors have software that will clone your old drive to your new drive. I don't tend to use such software though.

Differant brands have differant warranties and warranty policies. This is very important to pay attention to, especially if each company has return centers in your country, and their policy on who pays for shipping for RMAs.

Differant brands have differant coolers (biggest differance)

Differant brands tweak things to use more/less voltage, fit the design into a smaller card, etc.

private network = a private internet line you own from point A to point B. Nobody can see what you're doing on this connection because only you have access to the network.

virtual private network = creating your own private network "virtually" over a public network using encryption. So you can send things from point A to point B over a public network, but nobody can read them except the people at point A or B.

Proxy = a server you send information to that then relays said information.

What people think of as "VPNs" are typically services where you establish a VPN connection to a proxy server, and then that proxy server connects you to a website. This makes it so from the end websites perspective, the proxy (located in whatever country) connected to them, not you.

Nobody can snoop on your connection to see what you're sending to the proxy, because you're using a VPN. Since so many differant people use the same proxies in this setup, nobody can figure out who with a VPN connection to the proxy sent each individual request. VPNs can be beaten by figuring out that one user keeps sending very unique information over their VPN and working out who you are from there, or by simply compromising the VPN/proxy/your home computer.

You can use proxies without VPNs, which you sometimes see in LANs. You can use VPNs without proxies to connect to computers directly to eachother.

guy is retarded who preach about alignments and shit
thats one layer down, you dont deal with the actual positioning of data, SSDs firmwar deals with it

clone is OKish for mots, its slower because you have alrady existing OS there with lots of shit

clean install is fine, but theres absolutely nothing wrong with clone
if I would install clean OS with basic drivers on a freshly formatted 1TB drive, install my basic stuff, and then clone to a new SSD, I would expect zero difference between this cloned drive, and an installation of OS done right away on another SSD

checking you have AHCI set in bios though might help, and if not dont switch it right away or you wont boot, google how to switch sata to AHCI if your shit would not have it

also for clone pirated Acronis true image worked the best, I dont dozens of clones on it since version 2014

Is G-Sync a meme? Is it worth the extra 130$.
Is 1440p gaming a meme? Should I stick to 1080p?

Essentially, 1440p 144hz or 1080p 144hz with g-sync?

144hz Gsync 1440p IPS/VA (or TN for muh games)

don't get 1440P 144hz unless you have an excellent computer. Personally I don't use gsync on my monitor because I don't really know myself

the thing about gsync is that if you have 144hz monitor and hardawre that runs your games at those levels, then it will have almost no impact on your gaming experience

on some low fps scenarios there it might make things feel smoother and prevent some tearing and shit... but the difference between 60hz and 144hz is there, you will notice
but the difference between gsync on/off, well you will have trouble telling

i think /v/ would knew better on this

I have a 1070 and a 6600k with a custom water cooling loop for both. I think it can handle 1440p gaming in todays games but I am worried about next gen games. I have also never spent more than 10% of my computer price on a monitor so I am really hesitant about buying one of those 1440p IPS g-sync displays that cost a fortune. I am currently looking at the "AOC AG271QX" or the "Acer Predator XB271Hbmi".

The Acer has g-sync but is 1080p. The AOC is 1440p but no g-sync.

How much better is a Samsung 850 EVO over a Crucial MX300? Is the speed difference even noticeable?

I can get either a 500GB Samsung or a 750GB Crucial for the same price. Not sure which would be better.

nope, not really noticeable, I would get crucial if same price as samsung and +50%

It's okay. My chromebook was a piece of garbage so it never ran super well, but it will get the job done so long as you only use it for low-impact programs.

really? every review I find of MX300 says they are mediocre as fuck, and not even close to 850

its how they review, you take all the ssds from the last 3 years, put it in random identical PCs and tell the "reviewers" to find the fastest one by using normal every day use and they will be unable to do it... this is not a graphic card or cpu territory, where you get easily measurable FPS that directly impacts you.. they get some data in their stress tests but they dont really show in real life use

anyway, most imporatnt aspect of SSDs is their random read and operations per seconds, crucial MX300 is fine there, you dont need to worry.

really? nice, guess I'll go for a SSD this BF then.

This doesn't seem right but I don't know enough about hard drives to argue
