first for fedora 25

Fellas, I'm seriously considering buying a laptop (used/refurbished T430s is in my sights for the moment) and installing my first Linux distro. Feel like I've been too scared to switch, but the time has come

Which disto is best for an absolute beginner to Linux with more computer knowledge than your average normie, but still pretty shit (can't code, etc)

I've narrowed to down to Ubuntu, Mint, or Solus. (Gentoo seems too difficult). I swear on my life I'm not Kevin, but the only reason solus is on here (and I'm unironically leaning towards it) is because everything I've seen about it seems like it's the most user friendly. Am I wrong here? Also the budgie desktop looks really really nice. Can I get budgie on ubuntu or mint if you recommend that?

Basically whatever I go with, I would need to to run:
>Firefox
>Microsoft office (I'm a heavy excel user...is libre any good especially for advanced exce users)
>foobar
>ace player
>mpc would be nice but not important

Any help and advices would be greatly appreciated

Linux (licensed under GNU GPLv2) is an open-source kernel and usually comes bundled with free and open source software; however, proprietary software for Linux does exist and is available to end-users.

>>

You're correct, it's licensed under GPLv3, but The Linux Foundations violates it by shipping it with nonfree, binary-only ucode. Since they wouldn't sue themselves, it doesn't matter, but it matters when you say "Linux is free software" which it isn't because you don't have the required freedoms.

You can download the sources, edit them, and redistribute them.
Which freedumbs are you missing?
>>
>>57653107
Linux foundation releases Linux mainline kernel with no non-free modules or kernel hooks. Distro maintainers such as of Debian, SUSE, Arch etc include non-fee modules by themselves. Linux foundation does publish non free patches but they are independent from the mainline kernel. Because the Linux Foundation is not the co-ordinator of the free software movement. I didn't say Linux is a free software either. However Linux is not a proprietary software.

>>57653136
You are probably using gnome. You can validate by issuing the following command in your terminal emulator:
$DESKTOP_SESSION; ls /usr/bin/*session

considering you are a newbie I highly suggest you not to use a borderless window patch on GNOME.

honestly i dont know what the do and im reaching the limit to my patience with this bs

im mounted correctly at least i think i am.

5 seconds with your favorite internet search engine:

In order to successfully use efibootmgr the EFI variables filesystem must be accessible. This requires that the system has been booted in EFI mode (and not through the firmware's MBR mode) as otherwise the EFI variables themselves cannot be accessed. If the system is in MBR mode, reboot and do what is necessary in order to tell the system firmware to boot in EFI mode. Usually this involved either changing an option in the firmware's settings or selecting an EFI boot entry in the system's boot menu.

Do you know how to install gentoo alongside windows with uefi? i already have an efi partition made by windows
what do I need to specify when installing grub so it doesn't break anything?
>>
>>57654892
You 'might' be able to drop the Gentoo bzImage into the EFI boot directory that has Windows' EFI image and have the computer boot from that, otherwise look at grub specific shit. I don't use grub so I don't know how easy it is to dual boot compared to non-EFI boot.
>>
Redpill me on Lubuntu
>>
>>57654938
Where would I specify what exactly to boot from? In the uefi "bios" menu?
Do you use another bootloader? Is it easy to set up in the way I want to? I don't want to fuck anything up with grub as I have done every single time when not installing it on a separate drive.
>>
>>57654994
Some laptops with good implementations of UEFI will let you specify the .efi file to try to boot from. If yours doesn't, then you may have to find out how to boot EFI grub and boot into Windows/Linux from that.
When I set up Linux for EFI boot I just stick the kernel (bzImage) in /EFI/Boot/Bootx64.efi in the EFI partition and everything works perfectly.

When you need to block security updates in order to keep your distribution stable, there's something fundamentally going wrong. It may look nice for the average user, but under the surface, Mint is a horribly hacked together failure.

That said, it's basically just a worse version of Ubuntu with a different DE and different colors. I can understand when people need/want a just werks distro, but why not using Ubuntu which is developed by people who know what they are doing instead of some green painted, bad fork?

I'm trying to get into Linux but I'm having a hard time picking distributions.
I was thinking either Kubuntu because it's simple and doesn't have shit amazon spyware or Arch cause I feel a bit safer on something I've made and isn't endorsed by Google, like Kubuntu.

The problem is, I basically know nothing about Linux so I might fuck up with Arch and I don't feel very safe on Kubuntu since KDE was endorsed by Google.

So what do you guys think? I don't want Debian or Mint cause I've tried them out and don't like them very much
And I don't want Fedora or any distro that doesn't use standard BASH.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having a strange video problem. Now and then in firefox videos will stop playing properly, they will jump between two frames but the audio will carry on. This only happens periodically and can go from working to not working between one video and the next. I have experienced it with the nvidia driver and the nouvoeu driver. I don't know what else to do, I am assuming it is a graphics problem but I am cannot find much on google, I'm not really sure how to describe the problem in short enough terms. If I restart firefox it goes back to normal. Does anyone have any ideas why this happens?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>57657578
Do you have any idea how much of the kernel code was implemented by google and facebook, let alone how much of the development was funded by google?

Probably a shit question, but I'm using i3 as my window manager, and when I want to open up chromium, I type chromium into the terminal. But it's not just chromium that opens up, it's chromium AND the terminal, and the if I close that terminal chromium closes. Help me out senpai, can I get rid of the terminal somehow?
>>
>>57657924
Because it's made by Kev, innit?
>>
>>57657975
I don't understand, you type chromium in a terminal and it opens chromium + a second terminal?

Anyways, you should really be launching your usual programs using something like dmenu or rofi. But when launching applications from the terminal they are a child window or something so closing the terminal closes the application as well.
You can launch it with a "&" character at the end to prevent that from happening, like
>chromium &

the nsa asks literally everyone to install backdoors, don't you think they asked red hat too when they were work together? it may be open source, but it doesn't protect you from intentionally bad written code that can be exploited
>>
>>57658444
With that logic, we could already stop using Linux since there's lots of code written by Microsoft in Linux and Microsoft is part of PRISM.
>>
>>57658444
That doesn't address the argument.
If the NSA uses redhat products, which I believe they do, why would they put back doors in their own shit, so hackers and other nations intelligence agencies can use them?
>>
>>57658496
Linux is bad for security anyway because of it's blobs. If people aim for security, they should get a deblobbed kernel like Linux-libre and stay away from proprietary software.

GNU and Linux are both incomplete operating systems. GNU provides a large set of core tools, libs and shell - Linux is the kernel, a large program which makes your hardware communicate with your software. Together both projects build a complete operating system "GNU/Linux".

yes, you could compile it and all dependencies. It is not a good or logical way though.
Why do you want 3.22? If it is because muh bleeding edge i would suggest you to switch release models if your distro allows it. Debian for example does. If the reason is wayland 3.20.1 was the first decent version where wayland properly works and competes.
>>57655474
as you might know, some arch users behave a little weird sometimes. It has become quite common that they can't handle people criticizing their community or devs choices. If someone does this, some like to pretend the complainee only does so because he couldn't install arch himself.
>>57656270
He is actually kinda right. but you shouldn't blame users, you should blame mint devs and maintainers.
>>57656736
Careful with that. If you do anything artsy and a bit complex simultaniously, let's say edit a 20 layer complex image with 3840*2160px while simultaniously rendering something for it with cycles in blender and vectoring some image in inkscape while reading a tutorial on it with firefox you might run into a lack of ram and therefore experience a crash, which really sucks if you are rendering or forgot to save your progress.
i did write to swap (partition in my case, file works too though) on an 8gb RAM system before.

I'm thinking of moving away from Windows 10 to a Linux OS, however I rely on a lot of windows applications. I heard about something called KVM which supposedly lets you run Windows programs with proper hardware access. Could somebody explain the drawbacks of it?
>>
>>57666436
Linux is a kernel of the GNU operating system!
Search the web for "gpu passthrough", that's what you want, but it's actually not that easy. If you really can't find a better program for GNU/Linux, just dualboot. Simple programs like Photocuck, Foobar and some Games run in Wine without problems, but for AAA+ stuff you need a gpu paasthrough to a virtual machine.
>>
>>57665001
I used to recommend Ubuntu to people, but they're basically evil now. So I don't know.

It's still not bad just to start out on, but if you like it and want to stay on Linux I'd suggest finding something else after a while.
