PSA: DO NOT buy good headphones. It will ruin you.
>got hd600($270)
>it's too quiet
>get semi decent amp/dac smsl m6, happy with it($165)
>suddenly my 192kb/s doesn't sound that good compared to flacs or even 320
>so I replace my library it goes to 700gb, and I had a ton of classical on the line to download
>I go and buy reliable HDD 4tb($150)
>it's already at 2.4tb mark(I also had some jazz to add)

But at least I got my dream fulfilled of having almost all composers collected.

Anyone used the Audioquest Nighthawk? Is it a meme? I'm trying to decide between the them and the HD650.

>>
>>57646224

Yes it's a meme or yes it's good? lol
>>
>>57645677
The night in Nighthawk is really fitting considering they are dark as fuck and start dropping off at 500hz.
>>
>>57646269

Them being dark as fuck is what concerns me that I wouldn't like their sound. I also have some concerns about their physical design compared to the 650, in regards to just general serviceability and longevity (such as the weird little rubber arms that hold the cup to the headband thing).

Also, I would have to import them to get a good price, where-as I can buy the 650 local and know they'll last years with their spare parts being omnipresent.

I guess I can at least demo them.
>>
>>57646321
From my own experience with the Nighthawk, they are quite comfy but the sounds like they shoved a shit ton of cotton in front of the driver.
The SE535 is fucking bright compared to the Nighthawk. It has that little treble presence.
>>
>>57646354

Yeah, I suspect I wouldn't like them because of that. I had the UE6000 which measures kinda similarly in it's bass>mid>treble ratio and downward slope. I didn't like the lack of treble on those. I think I'll just go HD650, it seems the most sensible overall option for my needs.

Got HD600, happy as fuck but now on the patch of getting amp/dac for it. Good thing I don't buy anything ever and have spare money.

Anyone tried/heard CEntrance DACprotable, how it compares to DACport HD? It cost 150$ more than DACPort HD, has in build 8 hours battery, bass/treble EQ like on HiFi-M8 and thats kind of it. I will use it at home with HD600 so battery isn't that needed but it's definitely a nice thing to attach to the phone. I want to know if it sound's anywhere different to DACport HD and how is the EQ. Some people said that it's basically a HiFi-Skyn in none iPhone package.

Currently using Superlux 668B's

Looking around, the DT770's seem to be the go-to in this kind of budget range. Is that still mostly the case?

If so, which model should I get-- and does it really make a difference?

Also, should I look into getting a DAC/AMP for these? Are there any good budget ones, I remember reading that the "FiiO - E10K" is popular-- good choice, or is there any other alternatives (budget around £50 for this)

Cheers!
>>
I own a K702, but since people everywhere glorify the HD600, I'm about to pull the trigger on and check it for myself.
Is €275 a good price for a new pair (shipping fees and taxes included)? Its lowest price here was €240...has anyone else ever bought anythign from Bax-shop? They have a nice 60 days return policy, in case I won't like it.

Anyone have any recommendations on multi-driver IEM's in the sub-500 USD range? I had the UE Triple-Fi Pro 10's, but they recently broke. They lasted a good 5 years though.

Not sure if you guys deal in headsets but I might as well ask. Are there any good headsets or am I better off going with a mic and headphones separately? It seems like most of them are garbage headphones with a garbage mic sold to gamers for way more then they are worth.

770's if you want heavy V shape
M40x with HM5 pads if you want moderate V shape
Brainwavz HM5/NVX XPT-100 if you want neutral [whatever is cheaper]

all great options, choose your preferred sound sig
>>
>>57650068
Yeah, they typically are waste of money. There are like two or three that are kinda worth it.
Most headsets are worthless now due to Modmics and Boom Pros being affordable and easy to use, along with proper desktop mics getting a lot cheaper.
What is your budget though?
>>
>>57650068
Seperate phones+mic is always the way to go. There are a few pretty good headsets like the hyperx cloud for example
>>
>>57650068
Separate mic and headphones is always the better choice.

Oh, the /csg/ meme god tier cheap headphone. Not bad.

Replace the pads man. You'll appreciate the headphones a whole lot more. The stock ones are aids. Cheap 5 dollar ones on ebay/aliexpress are fine.

Get one of these
https://www.amazon.com/HDE-3-5mm-Female-Coupler/dp/B000E9U9GC
And a boompro
https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Gaming-Headset-Headphone/dp/B00BJ17WKK

Less than 50, and will give you better mic quality than other cheper headphones.

You need, NEED, new pads on any of the AT M?0x series if you've ever used anything remotely comfortable.

M40x are better than m50x as well. Not nigger bass tier, bass is actually tight, and the highs arent pure aids. Cheaper too.
M50x are the equivalent of Beats.

Modmics are fine. Worth whatever you value the ease of use at. I'd prefer a desk mic, but its up to you.

http://www.mp4nation.net/brainwavz-hm5-spare-earpad-1-pair
These. Worth the money. You can get velour ones as well, but they reduce the bass by a fair bit, and reduce the seal.

If you choose to get m40x over m50x, the m40x with the pads will still be cheaper than the m50x in the end

Just recived my HD600, everything looks so cheap... anyway i using the onboard sound card, and i hear distortion after certain volumes i mean i hear them louder but shittier, do i get an amp/dac or only an amp?
>>
>>57651938
As far as IEMs go I think a lot of people would recommend getting custom models once you hit the higher price range, for the improved comfort and isolation. I hear good things about 1964 ears.
>>
>>57651977
If you're using onboard you might as well get both.
>>
>>57650068

I personally own the HyperX Cloud, it's legitimately a good headphone for the money. I've never liked the headphone and mic combo, prefer a headset so I use them instead of my HD650 when in need.

Just don't get the cloud 2 version, they have a shitty usb dac that has inferior sound quality, particularly with the Mic.
>>
>>57652004

My idea was use the Apo/eq on the pc to play a little bit with the other HP and get a good amp, is it true that any DAC sound better than onboard SC?
>>
>>57652061
>is it true that any DAC sound better than onboard SC?

Not any DAC, and it depends on your onboard, but its typically true even of ~70 USD external DACs
>>
>>57652061
>is it true that any DAC sound better than onboard SC?
Only if you notice noise otherwise they'll probably sound the same.

The HD600's impedance is just a big boogy man, they're really easy to drive so something cheap like the fiio e10k or smsl m3 will be enough - you can still use EqAPO with these
>>
>>57651977
An amp is what you'll need to get the full volume range and be able to power through the high ohms, but a DAC won't hurt, and if you're not retarded youll be getting a DAC/amp combo anyways
>>
DT990s or AKG702
>>
>>57652061
Pretty much. There's nothing particularly wrong with an on-motherboard sound card, just that it's in the single worst place you could put a soundcard. And they tend to be cheap low quality dacs

Digital output = DAC at the other end of the cable
Doesn't change much from the software side, using ASIO would be a bigger problem than a DAC in that case

What do you mean by casual listening? For me casual listening needs to be as flat as possible as to not induce any fatigue.

If you have the money the ODAC+O2 combo is recommended by everyone. Also the schitt stack is good as well. If you're poor like me there's the ones that I've already mentioned - the e10k and the m3 plus a few other

Don't fall for the tube meme :^)
>>
>>57652258
I mean "casual" where flat doesn't matter
I have a hard time believing you need neutrality for fatigue but I'm just saying the 880's are cold and more analytical than 770's with copious bass and a warmer sound that sticks together better
I looked at the DT line trying to find flatness production, maybe that's why 770s and 990s sound similar to me, the 880s are really the most neutral ones but 770s are cheap and sound fantastic if you're not scrutinizing each frequency

Coming from superlux hd668b, the AKGs have a lot less bass, but it is tighter and goes much deeper. Superlux headphones sound like they just vomit the sound out with no effort.

I like the K712 bass a lot more even though it is quieter. It is to be expected though, since 668b is like 30 euros and k712 is over 200.

9500. More open, better sound-stage, better comfort.

Brainwavz HM5 or NVX XPT-100 if you want a neutral sound [whatever is cheaper]
M40x + HM5 pads if you want a moderate V-shape sound

Both are good.

I've heard they clamp VERY hard and are generally uncomfortable. I could be wrong though.

Both I guess
The sound is great on them, but comfort is lacking. 280's are quite similar, but just aren't as good as a whole

They're good studio monitors I guess. MDR's do better though.
Clamp is fuckin insane on the 280's though.

Comfort is fairly important to me. I do wear glasses, so excessive clamp could be an issue, though I do have a pretty small head.

It's not really the pads I find uncomfortable. I suppose it's more so the fact that I have a smaller head size than ideal for the headphones, so the pads lie on the top of my ears instead of gripping my head or lying on top of my head.
Plus my M50's broke, hence why I'm in the market for new headphones

The modmic is great, I can;t recommend it more.
The m50s are good but honestly I'm not too big of a fan. I got a pair of akg k702 and I fell in love with their clarity; the m50 just sounds muddy in comparison. However when I first got the k702 I wasn't too big of a fan, they sounded cold...boring. I now see that as neutral, open and full of clarity so your mileage may vary. As far as the pads go, they're really not bad but they got a little sweaty. Also, after 2 years or so they were pretty cracked so I got velour ones of massdrop for like $20 and they are a good investment. I haven't noticed a reduction in bass and man they are comfy. Hope this helps!

Hey, guys. I'm planning on getting some new full-sized closed headphones soon to replace my ATH-M50's. I have a budget of maximum $500. I have a Schiit Fulla that I use as a Amp/DAC and I mostly use the headphones for my computer. They can be the same level of comfort or greater than the M50's. I generally prefer a neutral, accurate sound, but I can be hard-sold on V-shaped signatures.

I'm considering the Shure SRH1540's, but I'd like to know if there are better options. Does anyone here own these headphones and can tell me at what volume or so they start to experience distortion (listed negative I read about)?

The distortion is a meme. A lot of people don't hear any and it was only tyll who brought it up and he isn't right all the time (see his fidelio x2 review). For the price you will not find better, sure you can get the fostex thx00 but those are bass cannons and the srh1540 are near reference in comparison. I own several headphones, including 400i and have tried many other high end headphones in the same price range, i still go back to 1540s.

do akg 712's really need an amp? Or is it just recommended? It seems almost every review of them makes a point of bringing up that they're stubborn to drive but my DT 770's are a higher impedance and they drive out of my laptop decently
>>
>>57659581
Just don't answer to them.

>>57660741
Impedance doesn't tell you whether you need an amplifier or not.

Amplifier/DAC checklist:
-Is it too quiet?
-Is the output impedance too high (fixable by equalization)?
-Is there noise/EMI or hiss to it?
-Does it sound distorted as you start to crank up the volume?
If the answer is no, don't get one.

>>57660801
well idk if the k712 has any of those problems though

Hence it's better to try them without anything first if you want to save some money. DT770 80 Ohm versions are much more sensitive than the K712 despite those having lower impedance. I can't remember the 250 and 600 Ohm DT770 specs.

Okay so, I'm trying to decide what headphones to buy. My budget is 40$ USD or under. I've narrowed my options down to two Headphones, the Koss PortaPro's, or Panasonic's Retro Over-the-Ear Stereo Monitor Headphones RP-HTX7-A1. What would you guys/gals reccomend between the two? Or should I choose something else? Comfort over long listening periods and decent sound would be nice, I also wear glasses so the headphones shouldn't obstruct them too much. I'll be using the headphones for gaming and casual listening. Also, NO EAR BUDS!

i have the m40x and wonder if i should have gotten the m50x because the high treble is piercing but i hear the m50x also has "metallic" treble so idk

i have soundmagic e10 iems and want a over-ear that sounds similiar. i'm thinking about getting the original CAL because it's cheap as fuck. does anyone know how they compare?
>>
Are there no good iems that don't have a coil around ear design? Doesnt work too well with long hair
>>
>>57660972

massdrop first ask you to pay, then gets the headphones made in china in a bunch
>>
>>57661054

mdr 1a was 180usd idk if it is still at that price.

The v6/7506 i doubt they going to get lower
>>
>>57662933

when the sound is more balanced usually you need to lower the overall volume, maybe you are used to have the lows over the highs. It often happens you star to miss things, but i suggest you that give it time first, if you are getting tired i could really be the volume.
>>
>>57663175
the volume shouldn't need to be boringly low. ive been listening to music long enough that i dont need high treble to hear all the parts of a song, but having high treble takes the enjoyment out of a lot of music cause it causes an earache.

i usually go as low as i can, i don´t understand what you mean about boringly so this is relative

i meant to get used to the sound signature of the HP, if you wanted the M50x which are unbalanced then maybe you want warm or dark from the start

ok, they still ask you to pay first there not made before the whole order is made.

What's the difference between 681B and 681 EVO?
>>
Ok I'm sorry for the newfag question, I looked thru the FAQ in the OP and couldn't find my answer, I'm not an audiophile, I'm just confused on which type of a gaymen headset to buy for PC.

There is a stereo, USB, and wireless version. All 3 have "true 7.1 surround" which is what I only care about (play overwatch competitively). All 3 have extremely similar descriptions but different prices, some come with a dolby USB adapter to use on multiple devices, is that what I need?
>>
Any experience with shure se215? All the reviews say the same thing. Rolled of trebles, great mids, etc. Any personal expireince with them ? Are they worthed for the price?
>>
>>57663632
Evo is extremely bassy, HD 681 is somewhat bright. Very different headphones all around, shouldn't pay the naming any attention.
>>
The headset in question is the corsair VOID btw
>>
>>57663771
I'm treble sensitive so I'll get 681 EVO then.
>>
>>57663348
Does anyone know? Could anyone suggest some good IEM in the 30€ price range?
>>
>>57663762
No, you only need stereo. You have 2 ears not 7, proper stereo is what you are after.
>>
>>57663348
I had one of those. They broke in about a year. But the sound was alright for its price.

You don't care about the surround sound, really. It's not going to help with your games at all, it's merely simulating "surround" sound creating a more immersive environment or sometimes just utterly ruining it. You won't gain anything in terms of positional accuracy with it. The "7.1" or "5.1" loudspeaker surround system specifications don't mean anything at all in headphones which use one driver per ear. Descriptions and manufacturer specs about the sound can quite safely be ignored too.

Wireless is there for convenience but can sometimes hurt audio quality. The rest of the options are just for convenience too. If you want to have the headphones hooked up with USB, video game consoles or into a standard audio jack, that's up to you.

>>57663769
They have very large bass boost, check frequency response measurements. If bassy in-ears are what you are looking for, they might be a great option. Isolation is one of the best, form factor and comfort really good for most people, they come with a nice selection of tips and stock cable is quality.

>>57663826
You really should consider other options. EVOs are mostly missing mids, their treble is peaky and very prominent despite the bass being almost overpowering. If you ask from me, I think they are terrible headphones all around. Even their construction and comfort is bad. You can find measurements too so no need to take my word for this.
>>

So my BeyerDynamic DT990 Pro has stopped outputting in the left cup. None of the cables look torn or broken in any way, and I can't see anything outwardly wrong. What can I do to fix this, if anything, and is it worth the cost to do so? If not, I'll just look for a new pair to buy, the DT990s weren't too expensive since I got the 250 ohm version
>>

The impedance (Z).
10 log (Z2/Z1)dB sensitivity difference.

not him, but if theres no difference other than that, then wouldn't it have just been more convenient to release it in its lowest impedance and thats all? Since they're essentially the same

High impedance models are useful for more powerful outputs, for high output impedance outputs as well as for studios where you(used to) use a single headphone output to monitor with multiple headphones in parallel.

Either their graphs are weird or I just don't know how to read these.

Everyone i've asked about the K712 vs HD650 says the senns have more bass yet this graph shows the entire opposite. Is it because of the K712's treble peaks that the bass sounds weaker? Would EQing the treble down acutally bring a more stronger bass than the default HD650?

Apples and oranges, they are completely different headphones. I would say something like this X2 is for someone coming from beats or other closed bass heavy headphones, sennheisers HD 600 for someone who want a balanced, bit laid back open headphones that won't change music too much with their sound signature like beyerdynamics do. I was a HD 600 guy, but since you have some audeze that you probably luv bass on HD600 may be lacking for you, alto bass on X2 was too much and coloured everything and was everywhere.

NOW the real memefight of the century is HD600 vs HD650, let the MAMAYS commerce.

>Why are amps so expensive?
Niche market, branding, easy to sell with price(high price can be intriguing and a reason why people are so interested in a product) and quite a lot of amplifiers also cost a lot in parts. That said you could manufacture amplifiers which offer a quality output with enough power for vast majority of headphones on the market for a very affordable price. Check FiiO products, E10K is a really safe bet.

It's hard to beat for Strayla. Any suggested DAC?
>>
>>57667407
You don't need a DAC, an amplifier perhaps. O2 or Magni 2 would be the easy recommendations for a high quality headphone amplifier with not much else in them but I don't know your budget or how much does it cost to buy/import one of those there. If you want to save money, get a device to drive your headphones with only after you know you need one. You might not.
