Do i get the hd-598s or the one sale HifiMan HE-400is. I mostly listen to alternative rock and jazz off of PC and phone. I also want them to be good for gaming on my PC too but i dont want to compromise quality for that.
Also, do I need an amp or dac for either of those choices?
>>
>>57610326
I think the HE400S (to avoid confusion with the name, the silver ones) would suit you perfect. I use mine for classical and jazz and they are phenomenal. Can easily be driven by a phone but really open up when I run them through some gear. Make sure to get some different pads though, the stock ones suck. I'm using the Brainwavz angled leather pads.
>>

Oops, forgot the 400i were on sale for 250. 400i for sure.

Right now I'm using https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Headphones-RP-HJE120-K-Ergonomic-Comfort-Fit/dp/B003EM8008/ and I actually have no complaints about the sound quality. What I want is earbuds that don't distort at higher volume, like these ones love to do.
>>
I'm set on getting the DT 770s by beyerdynamic. Do I need an amp or whatever that thing is called that audiophiles plug their headphones into?

Also considering the blue snowball as a mic since I've always used a headset and this one doesn't come with a mic.
>>
>>57610520
I don't have personal experience with the i's yet (ordered them myself coming tomorrow) but I think they definitely will benefit from an amp. If you're strapped for cash I know fiio makes some budget portable amps but I'm not super familiar. Im running the basic Schiit stack and for $200 it was well worth it. I'd say start with the amp then DAC after
>>
>>57610551
An amp would help with the 80 ohm version, and you actually need an amp for the 250 ohm version.
>>
>>57610428
Hm at least portable enough to throw in a bag. Removable cable would be preferred. Anyone try the sony mdr1a's? They're on sale for 187 right now. How's the soundstage?

I ordered a pair of Momentum 2.0 wired for 200 bucks from an AD which is rare in this third world shithole. Hardly any manufacturers offer warranty, but I've had pleasant experiences with Sennheiser service before, compared to AKG who told me to go fuck myself
How bad did I fuck up? I just think they look so fucking good.
>>
>>57610569
Gotcha.
Since i'd be blowing most of my budget on the headphones if i got the 400is, would something like a nobsound mini be good enough for now?
Or at least until i can save for something better?
(https://www.amazon.com/Nobsound%C2%AE-Bluetooth-Receiver-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B00W9G8LG8/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1479702456&sr=1-2&keywords=nobsound+mini)
>>
>>57610598

if you want bassy, these are not good, haver tried the m50x?

the k550 have good soundstage, and are a little v-shaped with more bass than highs, but are not as much portables
>>
>>57610551
Also another question: how good are these at noise cancellation/isolation? It doesn't say they can do that anywhere on the page but I don't want to hear talking/sounds clear as day outside the headphones(my current ones do this and its really annoying).
>>
Can anyone recommend me a decent desktop microphone? Something under 50$ preferably.
>>
>>57610872

>>
Got some SHP9500s on the way!
They were only something like 70 CDN, and a friend recommended them pretty highly to me
>>
>>57610853
I haven't heard the m50s but I've heard they're muddy in other frequencies so id like to avoid that. I'll check out the k550s.
>>
>>57610913
Don't even consider the K550's for portability
They're fucking MASSIVE, and don't fold, only lay flat, and the cable is 3 meters long, which means you'll need to tie it up and stash it in your pocket along with your PMP.
You'll also look like an autistic child wearing those massive headphones outside.
They're probably the best closed back headphones you can buy at that price, but they're not made to be taken outside
>>
>>57610926
Good to know, got any suggestions then friendo?
>>
>>57610955
I don't believe you'll like anything I can suggest. You seem to want to a perfect set of portable headphones for 200 bucks, and that just won't cut it.
You have to sacrifice something to have portability, or sacrifice portability to have a great pair of headphones with the K550/K550mkII

as >>57610980 said you need to choose

ill give you these

the mdr 1a give you the bass and the 10/10 confines, i say these are the more portable ones

msr7 gives you better sound over all but these are not bassy, have good soundstage, and a bit unconfortable, but not too much
>>
>>57611174
I'd say the 1a and the msr 7 are equally portable, considering neither folds, just lay flat.
The M100 actually fold, and I'm sure the Momentum 2 will go on sale for 160 bucks during black friday which is a good deal. Both of these fold, which makes them great for portability, but sound quality could be argued.

I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket and I'm considering a headphone upgrade this Black Friday.

I've been using Sony MDR-V6s for more than a decade now, and I've found myself going back to them even after messing around with others like Senn HD-280s, Grado SR-80s, ATH-M50x, and etc - I like them so much that I'm on my third pair through the years, but the itch is still there to upgrade.

Is it worth it to get a USB DAC/Amp? Anybody have any suggestions on what's a good match to the V6s?

tame the highs a little bit apparently but it wouldn't be a huge change, if you didn't like the 400i stock then it wouldn't be radical enough to make you like them.

that's the other thing, you always have the chance to return them if you don't like them, but you don't have the opportunity to get them for $250 again for at least a good while.

also HD558 > HD598

Electronic engineer here. Screencap this post so no one wastes time on this DAC/Amp bullshit again.

Every device that can output sound has a rail-to-rail voltage swing. For really shitty devices this can be something between zero and 1-2 Volts or less. For quality devices it will have a dedicated ground rail and negative voltages to reduce common noise.

Most of the time you'll be driving the outputs well below the maximum rails. Should your audio temporarily get high enough to require the full rail swing and the amplification needs to go to the rails, your amp will saturate and you'll basically only get that maximum rail voltage. Reality is even worse, the closer you get to the rails, the less linear your amplification is (see pic related). That means the more you need to amplify, when you don't a good amount of rail-to-rail voltage, the less linearity you get.

Also, when you have a shitty cheap device you get harmonic distortion, a non-linear effect where different frequencies can mix up or down to new frequencies. This is quoted as "total harmonic distortion" (THD) and even headphones themselves have this sort of effect. So the quality of the amplifier is important, rule of thumb is built it ones are usually shit. Also noise is a factor -- and with noise the more current you burn the lower noise you get. Something things like shitty iPhones can't afford.

So why is the external amp better and why do you need it? Usually the rail-to-rail voltage is much higher. a swing of 26 Volts is not unheard of. Most of the time you don't want to get even near these rails to stay in the linear part of the response curve.

Now for low impedance headphones, you can get away with using a low voltage swing. Wanna know why? Ohm's law.

Power = Voltage^2 / Impedance

To get the same amount of power (i.e audio level) out of a higher impedance headphone you need much more voltage. Thus you need a dedicated amp with low THD, low noise and high rail-to-rail voltage.

O2 DAC or get the fuck out of my house
>>
>>57612268
Now why you'd want a high impedance headphone is beyond me, I guess you can have more turns on the coil and get less noise in theory, or bigger arrangements of coils in series. I'll leave that one for audiophiles to argue about.

I'll add one more note -- external Amps/DACs are great because you don't have to pass through a noisy volume and get interference on the way out of your device. For motherboard audio this will make a difference between night and day. For an iPhone not so much.

http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/enter-next-generation-focal-elear-headphone-page-2

> A lot of people are currently making comparisons between the Elear and HD 600. I tend to think that comparison is more about the fact that the HD 600 has been a staple mid-priced headphone among enthusiasts for years, and the Elear is likely to become similarly known. (Yes, I think the definition of "mid-priced" has shifted upwards over the years.) Switching from the Elear to HD 600 has me immediately missing the heft and dynamism of the Elear. The lack of bass extension, the infamous "Sennheiser Veil", and a general impression of decreased resolution have me pretty quickly saying the Elear is easily the better headphone.

I would rather chop my dick off than listen to shits with their dogshit 'sound signature' ever again. Beats becoming 'good' is Dre realising that even his name won't warrant for such a dogshit build quality headphones so newer beats are a bit sTURDier and maaaaybe sound a bit less dogshit cus Chinese kids ration was increased by 20 more grams of rice.

Still, Shits are an overpriced GARBAGE with insanely shit sound 'signature', if you can call it a signature and not a muddy overblown bass, and there are still a lightning port that you can connect headphones to. Philips Fidelio M2L have a lightning connector, 2 times cheaper and are not a steaming pile of shit like Shits.

Any good upgrade? I think my headphone is dying, well the cable, everytime if i move the cable, say if i was in a middle of a game of leagues of cancer and tug on it, it would completely freeze my game and i would have to restart it. Mah fampatchi. Same story, had HD598 and got HD600 recently. Happy as fuck with my purchase, they are bit harder to drive but so worth as an upgrade, better at everything, literally, and compared to HD598 they have some bass.

Black lotus sounds real fucking good and makes me crank up volume all the way up and I usually never did with my macbook, altho that kind of indicates potential need of an amp. Naraku no Hana made me shed a tear at the end when triangle hit. Can't wait to get an amp and blast all my need stuff.

What will happen if i try to run a headphone with 300 ohms on an amp that can drive 150 ohms at most?
>>
>>57616096
>on an amp that can drive 150 ohms at most?
There's no such amplifier as there's no upper limit to load impedance you can use, only a bottom limit. These terrible misleading amplifier specs really need to go. We get the same question in every thread. So to answer, nothing different will happen, the headphones will work and the amplifier will work and in fact because of the high load impedance the amplifier will likely be operating in a more linearly compared to if you would plug in some low impedance headphones into it. The worst that could happen is that you don't get enough volume and in this case you need a more powerful amplifier but this is unrelated to the impedance of the headphones you plugged in.

You can use E10K with the HD 6xx just fine.
>>
>>57616096
Just don't. You better not know what will happen.
>>
>>57616096
It'll fries your headphone like a french fries and ready to serve as a burger patty.
>>
>>57615493
You might want to consider getting some Beyerdynamics then. They are more suited for metal with rock, and will go good with Eurobeat, dunno about Vaporwave but at least they will do decent with it. Consider DT990 and DT880, with first one being more 'fun' and metal centric while the later one being more neutral. Idk how strong is your thing, but there are different ohm versions of Beyerdynamics, from low 32 to a 600. Try them out in local store with your player, it might be a good fit for you.

replace the cable if you have to fiddle
though if you're using sennheiser's supplied 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter, you might want to replace that first, since it's a common weak point

but the thing with your game freezing is an issue with your computer's drivers. your audio drivers are detecting something being unplugged and freaking out. I think dell laptops have some shit that do that. dunno if any other manufacturer has similar issues
>>
>>57616544
Yes. I have the UEs, and if they sound anything similar, they absolutely are.

That said, if you're looking for low end boom, you won't get them outta those. They have kick, but no thud, and the highs are brighter than most IEMs.

If you do want low end, look into the Vsonic GR02 Bass edition. Low end is fucking amazing on them. I'm considering modifying them to have an MMCX connector like my UEs just so I only have to carry one cable around.

But TRRS/TRS/TS to RCA would all give the same result in terms of quality, same as XLR to RCA?
What difference would it make if was true balanced XLR to XLR in the amp Less humming maybe?

unless you're running long lengths or have a lot of EMI there won't be a difference

At this point, I'd rather just spend $60 more and get the HD600 instead of waiting for the 6XX.
>>
>>57614150
They weigh the same, the sound is V shaped in the 770, no removable jack, and the driver is 45m in both the headphones

Also the dt770 is made of cheap materials and breaks easily

1a sound chill and relaxed, they are also super confortable usually is better buy if you want to just have fun listening to music on a portable HP, the msr7 are more serious sounding, if you want to judge what you listen to then get those, there not as confortable too so

Casual fun confortable - 1a

Seriuous better sounding - msr7

Looking for a recommendation under 150 usd for a amp to drive the hd600 have anyone tried the SMSL ones or the fiio k5?
>>
>>57618406
I already have the sony mdr-7506, would the msr7 be much different from the sound on that? I don't want to get more of the same sound which is why I'm considering the bassier 1a.

Blocks out nuclear explosions, seriously you won't fucking hear anything at all. Safe volume levels too http://www.etymotic.com/downloads/dl/file/id/15/product/82/guide_to_safe_listening.pdf
>>
>>57618411

Also dont understimate the 1a sound, there is a lot of difference between the fun and the analitical listening, the later is usually better when you are alone in home, and for that is better an open can, if you are commuting maybe you want only to chill
>>
>>57618422

Both have a little more bass than the 7506 which is a little bright, you need more bass? (I actually love the 7506 bass, only it have no sub-bass)
>>
>>57618591
I love the bass on the 7506 as well but yeah I'd like some sub bass as I've been getting a lot more into hop hop lately. I'd still like it to be clear enough in other frequencies though.

Finally want to upgrade from shitty £10 earphones to good headphones. However I listen to music a lot everyday on the bus and in our University library too.

Do headphones leak a lot of noise? Big fear that I won't be able to use them in quiet public places because everyone will hear my tunes

Here's what I'm looking at

why does it seem like most people here either love or hate the x2's?

beats solo 3 sound great for bassy music. the main issue is with their price but they can be had for very cheap now. pretty much best wireless headphone at the price point

Is something like the nobsound mini amp sufficient as a starter amplifier for something like the hifiman HE-400is?
>>
>>57612268
Hey my man did you hate your signal processing courses as much as I hate mine? Is DSP or circuits more important for this kind of thing, or am I retarded for disliking DSP?

Also /hpg/ what are the best headphone deals for the holiday? I really want to get HD800, but I know there won't be any sales. Any other headphones (T50RP, MDR-Z7, etc)?

Just recommending these as the comfiest mofos ever. These are the only headphones I've ever worn with glasses that have absolutely no interaction with my glasses whatsoever. I can wear them all day with no fatigue.

If you wear glasses, the 598's are fantastic
