I realize this is the headphone general, but I don't wanna start a whole new thread and you guys probably can help.

I have a pair of speakers that can handle 500w continuous (likely only really good for 300w but whatever). I wanna stick them in my living room for home theater and listening to my record player.

All I need is an amp that can handle ~300wpc and a receiver with HDMI or bluetooth right?
How much will the receiver effect the sound if it's not powering them and is just moving channels around?
Or would it be better to get a mixer since I'll have a dedicated amp?

Specifics:
>Speakers: Cerwin Vega XLS-215's
>Turntable: Technics 1200 clone
>HTPC: RasPi 3 B w/ OSMC

Looking at a Yamaha MX-1000 amp (maybe M-85 but old and components might be hard to find if need be), no idea what receiver/mixer to get.
>>
>>57595873
>HTPC: RasPi 3 B w/ OSMC

it's like you hate video quality.
It will affect the sound but not by much, depends how picky you are. Do a research to learn how neutral receiver is.

My projector is only 1080p and I honestly rarely notice encoding. I'll watch anything that isn't a cam or in SD for the most part.

Thanks, any specific features or brands to look for in receivers?

You can actually hear the music with the HD600. HD650, its hard to distinguish (aka senheisser veil).

Vocals on HD600 are deadly good and there is much more detail compared to the HD650.

They're bassier but the sound signature is still very similar, just warmer and with less treble energy. I prefer the HD600. If you want a lot more bass you should probably look elsewhere.
>>
>>57596634
I'm using 600s after 598, I think soundstage is different but not by much, can play stealth games perfectly just like before. Things should not sound far away to determine distance of one from another, no idea how to explain this better. Basically in games I can still hear things that happen behind the wall.

A long time ago, I bought the Plantronics GameCom 367. It was ok, but the main problem was that after a while, the skin around my ears would get real itchy, even after cleaning the pads. Also, the area aroundthe pads would start to hurt after prolonged use.

I suspect that it is because I have a big head so the headset sorta squeezed my head a bit. Is that right?
Also, as I have rather easily irritated skin, should I expect a similar problem in the future if I get other full sized headphones?

A technical question about active speakers and headphone amps:
I want to get the JBL LSR305 as desktop speakers, use a xlr male to rca male cable and connect them to a headphone amp/dac like the AUNE X1s in the rca pre out and then usb to computer. This should work right?
Now, if I ever decide to get passive speakers and a speaker amp how do I connect those to the computer and the AUNE X1s?
Speaker cable from the passive speakers to the output of the speaker amp, then from the input to the pre amp out of the AUNE X1s?

Yuin PK2 & Sony MDRE828LP before that

I've had my Yuin PK2s for about 9 months and they sounded great, only for them to shit the bed last night. The wire innards that transitions into the plug must've come loose and the audio cuts out if it even bends slightly. This is apparently a common problem with Yuin earbuds and I wasn't aware at the time.

My previous buds of choice were the Sony MDRE828LP. I've been through several of these for probably almost 15 years as I feel the sound of these buds were unmatched. Unfortunately, they've been long since discontinued and I don't feel like lining the pockets of jewish resellers, as they're the only people who sell them anymore.

I'm desperate for good outer ear buds, which is slim pickings anymore and I despise inner ear monitors.

The material used is probably an irritant to your skin.
Try using some proper velour, otherwise you may have to move to leather or similar options

clamp may be a factor, but i doubt it'd do something to that affect

essentially get any traditional headphone that uses velour or leather
fill out a purchase request form [as found in OP] if you want suggestions.

Try the VE Monk+
Similar to the Yuin's. Might be better built, I'm not sure. Check em out

If not you can use one of those 'electronic spade splitter' things and open the casing to fix the Yuin's.

Might want to go and ask on /csg/ as well

Pretty much exactly how you just described it. Loudspeaker integrated amplifiers take in line level signal which Aune X1 outputs from its RCA pre-outs.
>>
>>57596907
I doubt anyone here will ever heard it. Its a fucking old headphone and discontinued too. Your best bet is to see the measurement of it.
>>
>>57600492
The LSR305 has its amplifier moved inside the cabinet, and that's about as much concern as you need to have with wiring.. You still feed the preamp to an amplifier, which is in turn connected to a speaker.
Whatever passive speaker you get, you will need the proper cabling to connect to your external amplifier of choice.

Nice, thanks.
What about if I want to use passive speakers and a speaker amp connected to the Aune X1. Would how I described it work?

>>57601500
Regarding the passive speaker since the active speaker setup should be good:
Passive speakers -> speaker wire to speaker amp output -> rca input speaker amp to rca pre out Aune X1 -> usb to pc
or do I need the rca output on the Aune X1. This is where I'm confused about the plugs and the order.

They are a tad to small, though. I get subdermal zits in my earlobes when i use them for too long. It is not possible for me to buy smaller hp because of this. It is important, that the padding does not sit on my ear.
Maybe a cm higher shells. The wideness is sufficient, though.

Thinking of buying something sub 200 USD which I'll mostly use to listen to music on uni. The most important thing is that it does not have much sound leak. What pair of cans should I get for the holiday season? Preferably under $250 US dollars
What I'm looking for:
-Overall good sound (I listen to many genres so there doesn't have to be any emphasis in the highs, mids, or lows)
-Semi Portable (I plan to use them indoors and outdoors)
-Under $250 US Dollars
-Fair impedance level (I primarily plan to use them with my iPhone 5s)
-Can be wired and/or wireless, doesn't matter
-Over ear or On ear

Here's what I've tried before:
-Sony MDR-XB950BT (Bad build quality and the huge emphasis on the low end is not something I really like that much)
-Skullcandy Hesh 2 (Uncomfortable and muddy)
-Skullcandy Grind (Not a big fan of it's sound quality)
-Beats Solo 2 (Uncomfortable over extended periods of time)
-Sony MDR-ZX770BN (Best I had out of these options, could use a little more bass and better design though)
-Sol Republics HD (Uncomfortable, muddy)

Bose Quietcomfort 35 (These are an exception do to the noise cancellation)
Audio Technica ATH-M40x
V-Moda Crossfade M100

Buzzing is generally one of the following:
>ground loop
>something is picking up ambient noise
>noise coming from a shitty source
I don't quite see how you can get a ground loop in your setup if it's just laptop > amp, especially since I assume the amp doesn't even have a grounded wall wart in the first place. Could be some other grounding issue but I honestly don't know what. Out of all my audio gear the only thing with an actual grounded plug is the subwoofer.

Shitty line-level signal cables can and will pick up noise, though they honestly have to get fairly long before it'll happen. I had very loud buzzing from my (loudspeaker) amp if it was switched on to a source that was turned off with regular RCA cables. I replaced everything with shielded cables and all the noise is gone now. You want to avoid noise as much a possible on amp inputs since it will obviously be amplified along with the actual signal. You don't need some fancy super-audiophile cables, just some decent, shielded cables.

HD 650, Fidelio X2 or HE400s for home listening? I'm confident I'd like the 650 the most outside of sound since they imo look the best, would probably the most comfortable due to being way lighter than the other 2 and are actually user serviceable which is good for the long run. They also give me the most confidence in their build quality since the X2's Gibson fiasco and the 400s being chink-ware.

I just don't know about the sound between the three. Any opinions on that?

Test them out in your nearby store, that's literally the best way to chose, and HD 650 and X2 are very different. I won't call X2 a GiggaNiggaBass cans but they are a basshead ones. HD 650 are very smooth and laid back, too smooth for some people (memeveil) and much less bass aggressive than X2, bass is there but not on a frontline like on X2 I guess. HD 650 have clearer vocals and more detail over X2. Both are comfortable with some edge to HD650, X2 pads are large but still rounded while HD650 are ear shaped. Soundstage is supposed to be good on HD650 as well, I listened to them but own HD600 instead, X2 do have soundstage.

Important thing is, X2 are ~32 and don't need an amp to drive them, but do benefit from it. So you are free to plug X2 into your phone or pc/notebook and they will work good with all volume you need. HD650 are 300 ohm, so they won't work with phones or some cheap notebooks sound cards. My HD600 give me enough volume on my macpro, but here I am looking for an amp.

Tl;dr, X2 are basshead work on everything musical cans. HD650 are more neutral laid back cans that most likely won't work loud enough with phones and may need an amp to a degree.

Thanks for the writeup, anon. I would love to test all three side by side but I don't have anywhere (that I can find here in Melbourne) that stocks all three of them. Even then, not every store offers demos.

I don't particularly like "up front" bass. As long as it's present at a decent level I'm good. I do appreciate higher levels of clarity, and the 650 allegedly being much more "fatigue proof" is appealing to me.

I have a strong amp that used to run my DT880 600 no problems, so I'm not worried about that. Basically coming from that headphone I want something a bit less bright and a bit warmer sounding. If the 650 do that then I think I'll be in end-game land.
>>
>>57607279
my thoughts are that you don't need a portable dac or an amp and should sell whatever shitty headphones /g/ convinced you to buy that "needed" them and buy something that isn't designed to drain your wallet with placebo garbage instead.

Yeah, that's what I've been leaning towards and I think you're right. The street price difference between the two is much smaller here than the $100US RRP gap they officially have, and I prefer the looks and cable of the 650. I do think the headband padding looks slightly more comfortable due to that gap in the top.

As for the difference in sound between the 600 and 650, the slightly more present bass and the (alleged) slightly better detail resolve of the 650 sounds more appealing to me, though I'm sure they're very similar sounding all things said...

I can actually demo those two side by side, but by the time I have the money for one of them I'm going to be very busy with work so I'll probably end up just getting the 650 delivered and be done with it. I'm agonising over the decision far too much anyway. I primarily listen with speakers nowadays, I just wanna own a good hifi open headphone again for when I'm in the mood or need to listen more privately.

Thanks again man. Good luck finding an amp!

Get HD650/600, coming from DT880 you will like them, X2 are more for someone coming from beats and other closed cans.
HD650/600 ARE less bright, more laid back and warm sounding than DT880. Funny thing that if I will get other cans they will be most likely beyerdynamic, because how opposite they are to Sennheisers.

HD650 are warmer and supposedly have better soundstage over HD600 that are more neutral. Any way around, I bet you will like any of them, they are really comfy both in sound and how they fit and you can listen to them all day without your ears getting tired, reason I got them over beyerds.

It's time to finally get them and hopefully end the search for my home headphone needs.
>>
>>57605632
>my budget is around 300$
If your budget is that high maybe just sell them and get HD650 if you want more bass/warmer sound, that sounds like a better idea than getting an amp to color the sound. Maybe you'll want to use the amp for something else as well, better to keep it neutral and get one that doesn't interfere with its input beyond amplifying it.

>I do appreciate higher levels of clarity, and the 650 allegedly being much more "fatigue proof" is appealing to me.
I have 650s and they're very non-fatiguing, even at loud volume, I think it's due to their warm sound. I don't have too much experience with hi-fi but I haven't heard anything that's as easy on the ears as the 650s, speaker or headphone, even at louder volume.

As for wearing comfort, I'm not sure what to say. Other people call them very comfy, but I have a large head and the clamp is pretty real. Worst case scenario you can bend the metal bits ever so slightly to ease pressure.

I wouldn't say they're very hard to drive, I've tried them on a Xonar DX and integrated audio, comfortable listening level is around 30-35% volume. On a Nexus 5 it's more like 70-80% indoors, so if you want to use them on the go in a louder environment a phone may not be able to drive them quite loud enough.
>>
>>57605677

im from UK, Tacsam MH-02 or Superflux 681 i think thats the model, both available on Amazon UK

Youtube the models, for the price they are great.

I went with Tacsam, if you do make sure to change the pads as the standard ones suck.
>>
I have equalized porta pros. Should I "upgrade" to anything else or have I reached the pinnacle?
>>
>>57608290

The clamp force was one of the factors that kept me away from them for so long. I have good news for you that I only became aware of recently.

Simply extend the headband all the way to the biggest size on one side only, and bend the metal arm outwards somewhat to whatever level you want. You probably want to make this bend as close to the earcup as you can, I would imagine.

Repeat the cycle on the other side and there you have it, no more clampy HD600/650s!
>>
>>57608358

LOL nevermind, I probably should have read the rest of your post... But yeah, in any case, I'm not worried about clamp. I intend to do that operation out of the box.
>>
>>57608358
Yeah that's what I ended up doing, I ever so slightly bent the metal part. They still clamp a good bit harder than any other headphone I've used but they're no longer uncomfortable to me.
>>
>>57608390

Maybe bend them a wee bit more? The other thing that has to be accounted for is head-size, which of course only worsens clamp. I'd say my head is pretty medium size, it's definitely not unusually wide or anything so I should be OK I hope. I really don't like strong clamp force but I hope the bend should be enough to make them comfortable.
>>
>>57608442
I'm fine with them as they are, every other headphone fit kind of loose, the 650 is a bit tighter but also stays in place perfectly even if I turn my head quickly and shit.

Easing the clamping force can supposedly change their bass response because it degrades the seal, but I haven't heard any change at all after bending mine.
>>
>>57608488

Yeah I've not noticed any perceivable level of change when I've loosened a headphone's clamp, and I've done it on a good few. This is especially true for open headphones which don't really rely on a "seal" anywhere near as much and are more about proper positioning. In any case I don't intend to lower the force enough that they're so loose that they'll fall off or anything, just enough so that the strong, vice-like pressure is gone on both my head but also the earpads, which should improve their lifespan.

I'm not going to be using them all day or anything, either. One to two albums is about as long as a single sitting will be for me with them so I think with a bit of a stretch of the arms the comfort should be quite good.
>>
>>57608552
Yeah, I quite like the way they fit now that they don't clamp as hard. My ears don't get too hot either with them on and I've had a few sessions where I've worn them a good few hours.
>>
>>57608584

Alrighty, thanks for the insight, anon. I think they'll be a good buy. It just sucks that both the availability and colour of the Massdrop 6XX are so shit, otherwise I could save a few bucks and get those.
>>
>>57608640
That color is pretty shit, yeah. The black and grey of the regular 650 looks much nicer to me, but in the end I wear them on my head and inside my house, so I would've gotten those if they even existed when I bought mine. I never bought anything from Massdrop, but I think it also takes a long time to get your product, right? The color doesn't matter much but waiting weeks or months is pretty shit.

I paid $375 for mine (in Europe) and they were on sale too. I could've fit both those 6XX and a decent amp in the price I paid for the 650s alone.
>>
>>57608718

Yeah I've never bought anything from them either but yes to my understanding there's a noticeable wait. Those who got in the first wave won't be getting them until well into December to my knowledge. So yeah, even if the colour was better, I'd still go for the 650.

Price here in Australia is quite good. $428AU from local, authorised sellers which right now is 296 Euros or $313US. Still ends up being a good $100AU more or so than massdrop but for the better colour, cable and immediate access it's more than worth it.
>>
Does anyone know how to turn Audio Technica ATH-M50x into bluetooth (via a adapter, connector or something)?
>>
>>57608767
>Those who got in the first wave won't be getting them until well into December to my knowledge
That's really pretty terrible, my old headphones were almost falling apart, probably wouldn't have waited either. This way I guess I also have warranty in the same country if something ever does happen, though I can't see how they could break down other than physical damage.
>>
>>57608826

Yeah, it's too much of a wait. The 6XX is basically for poorfag NEETs who want to conserve their birthday money, and people from countries where the currency conversion is very unfavourable, rendering luxury import goods expensive (South Africa for example).

And yes, local warranty on anything decently expensive is the way to go.

I want some headphones for gaming but also for listening to music. I mostly listen to Alternative Rock, but also will listen to others like electronic, and jazz.
Basically the reason I'm posting is because i want advice on whether i should buy the HifiMan HE-400i which I can get for $250 or if i should buy the Sennheiser HD598s which i can probably get around $100 near Black Friday.
I'm kinda new to this stuff so I dont know if I need an amp or dac for the 400is but ill mostly be using them for playing games and listening to music on my PC and LG G5.
Any opinions?

What are your thoughts on the ATH m20x? They look pretty comfortable.
>>

They could be OK. Never used them but I used to own the M50x. Their comfort was OK with a bit of a stretch of the headband but I found the earpads not as spacious as I'd like, and what I'd experienced with other headphones of the same size.

The M50x sounded good for what it's type and price but it had basically no soundstage at all which was pretty shit, honestly. Though at your budget you probably can't expect much soundstage anyway...

So the 20x could be good but you'd have to look for reviews and measurements to suss out it's sound.
