Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price, or improve specs or build quality.

>>
Do you guys have some basic do's and dont's for a first time builder?
>>
>>57448379
How much cheaper?

>>57448457
If you're ultrapoorfag 9000,
DO
Buy a prebuilt.
DON'T
Build your own PC.

If you want to buy a PSU,
DO
Get SeaSonic as first choice, a PSU from a reputable brand with better prices and specs second choice.
DON'T
Buy cheap no-name garbage.

If you want to futureproof your build,
DO
Splurge on a case - they aren't going to get outdated anytime soon.
DON'T
Get an Intel socket and expect it to last more than two generations, or get an Nvidia GPU - those fuckers age quick.

If you have a single 1080p/1200p(16:10 master race) or one or more lower resolution monitors, and don't plan to have any additions or do any upgrades in the near future,
DO
Get a card that will still hit 60 Hz minimum frame rates in games for your monitor(s).
DON'T
Buy the latest and greatest video card - by the time you add monitors or upgrade your monitor(s), a new card will have come out with the same performance as the previous greatest for half the price and with the current greatest having double the performance as the previous greatest for the same price.

If you want a PC relatively soon,
DO
Get all the parts in your build as soon as possible.
DON'T
Wait - that's another eighteen months with what you have now, and prices aren't going to suddenly go down drastically any time soon.
>>
>>57448457
Don't forget standoffs and the I/O shield first. Do make sure sure cables (and the plugs) will fit before you start screwing anything down. Do read the manual when putting the individual front I/O wires in.
Don't put things in slots that they won't fit in.
It's not hard

Looking to upgrade this, because I got a 4k monitor as a gift. Getting a 1080, and DDR4 ram while I'm at it. This wasn't originally mine, and obviously I barely have any clue what I'm doing since I'm asking, but how are the motherboard and CPU? Can I get away with not having to worry about upgrading those?

>>
>>57449362
Ddr4 is only supported by x99 and skylake motherboards. You would have to upgrade your cpu and motherboard if you want ddr4. You would be fine with only a new video card.
>>
>>57448457
Experience with a pre-built so you know your way around a pc before building your own one is always prefered. However if you buy a pre-built and plan on upgrading/switching components/modding the case later, never buy a Dell's. Their PCs are ridden with proprietary shits (case fan use 5 pins connector, short I/O wires, etc).
If you are still building a pc without much knowledge beforehand, never go for overclocking right away. Those OCing PCs require custom parts, and some parts will get in the way of other parts if you are clueless while picking parts. the less custom/after market parts you buy the less headache you will have when assembling your pc

just my 2 cents

I'm planning on buying a GTX 1060 for 1080p gaming at 60Hz
I'm wondering if I should get the 3gb or 6gb model. There's a sale on the 3gb model for 200€ when normally it's around 250€ and the 6gb model is around 300€ (located in Finland)

I've understood that in current titles the difference in performance is very minor, but how future proof is the 3gb model?
>>
>>57450651
If you're thinking about building that PC, don't. Get a Skylake CPU (eg i5 6500) with DDR4

Check suggested builds in OP

>>57450639
1070 or wait for 1080Ti in Jan

>>57450860
3GB is fine, you probably won't have nice texture options, but compared to consoles you will have enough VRAM
>>
>>57450945
I don't really care about how it compares to consoles, what I care about is how long am I able to crank up the settings @1080p if I do choose the 3GB model.

Perhaps having peace of mind regarding the future proofness of my computer might be worth the extra 100€
>>
>>57451155
Games are made for consoles first, which is of course why their specs matter, retard.

Also you can't future proof your graphics card (retard). 3GB will be fine as long as games are still made for the PS4 or PS4 Pro
>>
>>57448646

>>
>>57452230
Don't multiGPU, it sucks. 480 is plenty for 1080p. You can run CF on an i5 6500 if you want
>>
>>57452381
Get 3000MHz RAM
2TB HGST HDD
GTX 1070 or wait for the 1080Ti

You'll need a nice monitor to go along with either of those, otherwise just get a 1060
>>

This is my first crack at putting a build together. I tried to stick with logical increments and learn as much as I could but I'm bound to fuck something up on it so thanks for taking a look

I want a great machine for gaming, but I also need good processing power for audio production purposes, so I included an i7. I'm fine in the budget, I just want to clarify that the build makes sense and also to get some feedback on some better choices that I could make from those more experienced builders.
>>
>>57452408
Makes sense, thanks for the input
>>
>>57452440
Mobo is good but a gaymen meme. Get 3000 RAM. Don't get an EVGA card, they are literally a house fire. Your case is absolute meme garbage. 850W is a complete overkill unless you want to SLI two 1080's in the future and OC.
>>
>>57452693
You could SLI and overclock two Titan XPs AND have enough power for CPU and everything with 850w

About to grab this - I want a 1080 and considering last year, this might be the best chance I get to get a good sale for a new GPU.

Thoughts? Have you guys seen a better one elsewhere?
>>
6700 or 6700k?

Is it worth getting the K version?
>>
Yeah, worth it to grab the K but only if you get an HSF, since with proper cooling you can achieve pretty much the same lifespan but a faster speed on a card.
>>
>>57453207
Looks good, I have a gigabyte 1070 ($400) and no problems
>>57453214
Yes it's free performance you can use in a few years when your CPU starts aging. The difference is only like $15 right?
>>
>>57453214
But like he said, k versions dont come with their own CPU cooler
>>
>>57453260
What?
My 2500k came with a stock cooler, which I'm still using.
>>
>>57453267
Skylake K processors don't come with stock coolers.
>>
>>57453294
Oh. How come?
>>
>>57453304
K means you are overclocking, which means you are assumed to be a power user, which means you're going to want control over your HSF. Use your head, dude.

Any build with any new Intel CPU or old i-core/Xeon CPU, any build with performance on par with a FX-6300, any build with good single-core performance and multi-core performance.

Honestly, it really just depends on the game. If you're playing an unoptimized piece of garbage, you're going to need a better CPU, but for the most part, the above criteria is enough.

Just got my computer put together, but I can't get it to recognize my usb and wireless usb keyboards and mice. I have [pic related], but only one for a mouse, as the BIOS doesn't seem to respond to any keyboard I use.

Do I have to go out and buy an old p/s2 keyboard, or am I missing something?

As a related question, the new motherboard might just need its drivers installed, but the driver came in a CD, and I don't have any drives connected to the mobo. It has plenty of SATA ports, but the DVD/CD drives I tore out of my old computer only have IDE ports. Do I really need to connect a newer SATA drive to download the drivers, or can I burn the driver CD on another computer to an external HDD and boot from that via USB?

That's not gonna work out.
>DDR3 RAM
DEF not gonna work out, something with skylake CPU's not liking DDR3 or something.

>450w Power Supply

Okay, just because PCPartPicker shows 374 watts overall, doesn't mean it's under 450w.

Double it, then get a PSU that can handle it near or above the doubled number.
650 watt 80+ gold would be a good choice here.

>>
>>57456993
You don't really need a Z170 board if you're not overclocking, a H170 board may be a better option. Although it depends on how prices work out, and if you can find a H170 board with the features you want.

You're also missing RAM and a HDD. May be worth getting a bigger SSD, too, 120GB goes faster than you think, even if it's just an OS + applications drive.
>>
>>57457007
Get a new GPU. 480 or a 1060 probably, if you want to stay on the cheaper side of things. The 3570K probably won't bottleneck you too much, might be worth getting a good cooler on it and overclocking though.
>>
>>57457078
thanks. I'm tearing apart my old PC, so I'll have the ram and a HDD already.

>>

>>

It looks pretty serviceable to me, should be able to play most games that are out at the moment without a ton of trouble. You could probably go with a H170 motherboard if you don't plan to overclock, that may bring the cost down a little, but not massively.
>>
I'm gonna spend 1400 gbp on a beef rig come black friday, is this wise or should I wait?

My current rig is pretty old now. 3.2ghz i7, 560.

My interests are:
Competitive shootan (so going for the 144hz meme, I know that's not realistic at max settings even on the newest cards but for shit I take seriously I turn all the distracting effects and post processing off)
Heavily modded games, like enthusiast level FO New Vegas modding to make it like a milsim survival experience.
3D modelling as a hobby.

Anyone got any personal guidelines or suggestions?

Is it worth buying water cooling?
Is it safe to use velcro wire tidies in the case when building or can this cause static build up?
My processor will be an i7 and someone was ranting at me that I should get good cooling if I'm gonna blow 300 on the cpu alone.
>>
>>57453098
If it's a BenQ, it's a common problem. Try plugging it into VGA or HDMI, then to display port after it detects it.
>>
>>57457196
>Is it worth buying water cooling?
If you do a custom loop, sure. It's a LOT of work though, arguably too much for the reward. AIO coolers can't really outperform the bigger air coolers though.
>Is it safe to use velcro wire tidies in the case when building or can this cause static build up?
Safe and incredibly common. Nothing should be generating much static if they're secured well, and they'll likely be behind the motherboard tray, so they won't be touching anything.
>My processor will be an i7 and someone was ranting at me that I should get good cooling if I'm gonna blow 300 on the cpu alone.
Probably worth at least spending 30 bucks on a half decent cooler, the stock will perform badly. Do you need an i7 though? Most people really don't.

Unless you‘re gonna overclock, get a H170 or B150 mobo.

Get a OEM 1060 like msi or gigabyte, founders edition cards are loud and hot, and you‘re also a full atx tower case.
>>

>>
>>57457082
I was told the card is really outdated. Mostly just want to play MMOs and a couple fast paced games at 60 without chugging on high.

Thanks for the help, by the way.
>>
>>57457610
If you're only playing at 1080p, then a 480 or a 1060 will easily get you that kind of performance. You could even go lower if you want, but I wouldn't recommend it, they're already pretty cheap cards.
>>
>>57457593
Well that's kind of weird, the H170 is meant to be cheaper.
>>
>>57457643
I'll probably stick to the 1060, I guess.

As long as it stays cool, it's safe to overclock correct?
>>
>>57457719
Yeah, just make sure you know what you're doing, research is important if you're new to overclocking.

I've noticed there's a couple brands tied to the GPU itself. It's probably a dumb question, but that shouldn't have an impact right? I've read sometimes it affects how well it overclocks but I wouldn't say I'm 100% on it.

Last thing as far as I know, if I really wanted to push it to the limit where would I look towards for more recent stuff
>>
>>57457780
Basically the difference is the cooler on the card, and the level to which the card is factory overclocked. They're pretty much all at least decent, and there's not much good reason to buy the particularly expensive ones, but it's worth reading reviews before you commit, just to make sure there's no weird issues.

My PC's motherboard just died, and with it, my i7 950 is useless too since the socket is outdated.

Yes. Most pharmacies, drug stores, and supermarkets should have at least 70%+ Isopropyl alcohol in stock. It shouldn't be too big of a problem to find, but try to get 90% or above.

When you get it, just put some on a paper towel and rub the old compound away. Make sure the surface is perfectly clean and dry before applying the new thermal paste.

Before you go out an buy anything, if you have an internet connection, just try and get the drivers for your motherboard from the manufacturers website.

Since you might not be able to type anything without a keyboard, try using another computer (if you have one or have access to one, that is) to download the drivers and then put them on a USB drive to install them in your current build.

As a side note, some p/s2 keyboards don't always like being connected through USB.

Best of luck my friend.

You can go for a bit more RAM if you want, but that depends on how you use your PC, so it's not really a necessity.

1. How expensive are PC parts going to get when the Donald destroys free trade?

2. If you used a free upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and you build a new PC, can you put that old Windows 8 on new PC?

3. Is now a good time to build a PC or should I wait?

I am running an old 2600k which performs well enough, but my motherboard is having all kinds of problems and most of the stuff in my PC other than my GPU are at least 4+ years old at this point. So I just want to build a whole new PC from scratch.

>>
>>57467171
>1. How expensive are PC parts going to get when the Donald destroys free trade?
Think Canadian dollar prices at the worst case, and that won't be from free trade agreements directly. It will be from backlash and "revenge" treaties from other countries to punish and penalize America for pulling out of other country's FTAs. Sort of how alliances were during the build-up to WWI.
>If you used a free upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and you build a new PC, can you put that old Windows 8 on new PC?
My understanding is that you need to downgrade to Windows 8 for that to work.
>Is now a good time to build a PC or should I wait?
Around February, I'd say. Zen and Kaby Lake will be out by then and older parts will be on clearance.
We won't feel the impact of the Trump presidency and FTA killings until at least 2018 at the earliest.

Basically, EVGA's 1070 and 1080 GPUs have been literally catching on fire, because there's no real cooling on their VRMs, nor do the said VRMs have any sort of temperature sensor or anything so card don't even know to shut down or start throttling when they overheat.

Thanks for the help. I'd probably buy the GPU somewhere else where it'd be 250 euro. would the gtx 1060 3gb be better in that case for 220 or is the rx 480 simply better. Not familiar with the battle between amd and nvidia.
>>
>>57470995
RX480 is far better than 1060 3G, that card is gimped on purpose, 1060 6G is a different story.

I'm considering water cooling with a custom loop on my next build
For CPU + GPU cooling, would a single 240mm radiator be enough for some light gayming, or would a second radiator be preferred?
Probably won't be overclocking any time soon either.

put to pumbs or split in the exit of the pumb and join at exit of radiator

that must get you the better heat transfer.

Okay so I've been buidling a new computer and everything seems to work just fine, but when I try to install Windows 7 from a USB, it says a cd/dvd device driver is missing. I don't even have an optical drive.
I've looked online and after trying some more popular solutions (switch usb ports, set bios to legacy, redownload iso) I'm at a loss for what to do next. Does anyone here know of a solution that doesn't involve buying an optical drive?

The primary reasons for self built are expansion in the future (going to a bigger cpu, maybe new socket, and more disks), modularity, and silent/very quiet operation. Plus the motherboard I chose will take ECC memory, which is cool and useful since I have shitloads of it.

Prebuilts in the $150 area are loud, hot, Core 2 or sandy bridge machines in questionable condition and lack expansion.

SBCs or laptops are much more complex. If I go cheap then I have to figure out external disk enclosures and am generally stuck with shit specs and slow networking. If I go more expensive then I sacrifice options and don't actually save any money.

Will the performance gain of Kaby Lake be worth waiting to build?

I see comparisons with like 2600k, 3770k, 4680k, 4790k, and 6700k all being within a few percent of each other in performance (when overclocked). Like there has been almost negligible gaming performance increase in the last six years.

If I will ONLY game and nothing else, is it worth waiting? With this coming generation be any different?
>>
>>57480343
Wait and see the benchmarks, then decide for yourself.

Personally, I'm swapping over to zen when it hits the market.
>>
>>57480343
It's literally Skylake overclocked and USB3.1 native to the southbridge. All of the IPC gains have been proven to be directly tied to higher clock speeds, not any improvements to the architecture. FFS even the iGPU is exactly the same and is still called the HD 5200

What about optane SSDs?

Will I be missing out if I build now or will they be prohibitively expensive at first like SSDs were back in the day?

I am just trying to build a mid-range 1440p system that will run things well enough for a few years at least. So if they come out and cost like $500 for 128gb or something, that would be way above my range anyways.

Won't be ready for the market until halfway through next year. And don't hold your breath on the pricing. Think Intel 750, not 730.
