It's perfectly usable and has more sane default settings, a built-in terminal emulator, and other minor conveniences. But if you've already configured Vim to your liking, then there's probably not much Neovim has to offer. They're nearly identical from an end-user perspective.

I've made a venn diagram to show how similar and different Vim and Neovim are from eachother. See the attached image.
>>
>>57414174
If you want to right now, I'd suggest public toilets, especially those everybody can use, if you have those close, otherwise a restaurant's one
>>
>>57414191

>built-in terminal emulator

Basically, terminal emulator -> neovim -> terminal emulator? I can have a terminal emulator in the program that I'm running inside a terminal emulator? What for?
>>
>>57414250
>I can have a terminal emulator in the program that I'm running inside a terminal emulator?
Yes. You can run Neovim inside Neovim inside Emacs inside Neovim and so on.

>What for?
Purely convenience. When you have all the output of your terminal emulator in a buffer within the editor, you can much more easily manipulate and use that text within the editor. I guess it makes for a nicer workflow for some people.

So I'm trying to configure smplayer to work with livestreamer, but can't find anything with an issue like this.

I think it has something to do with the pipe and smplayer, since MPV works just fine. When I try to play a stream from shitbox under smplayer, it doesn't even play. Just gives me this:
Playing: -
[file] Reading from stdin...
Failed to recognize file format.
Exiting... (Errors when loading file)

(Of course after some other stuff that doesn't seem relevant)

Anybody have a suggestion? Not a big deal I can just tweak up the MPV settings a bit.

I managed to switch to the intel gpu via the driver manager.
So the updated nvidia driver is the fault.
the update manager can show the previous version (View > History of updates).
I'll be using the instructions from this thread

People already told you that a window manager has nothing to do with this. It depends on the GUI toolkit the program is using and its default file-dialog.
You cannot change that, unless you rewrite the program completely.

Quick question guys: I want to install Debian from an USB stick but the problem is that the installer assigns /dev/sda to the USB and my SSD becomes /dev/sdb. If I then choose to install GRUB onto the MBR of /dev/sdb on the reboot it will say "unknown filesystem" for all the partitions. Fixing from recovery/chroot is not possibile because the USB is always automatically mounted as /dev/sda causing the root to always be /dev/sdb. I don't have access to a CD drive. I just had to reinstall Ubuntu 16.04.1 because its sane installer assigns the devices names in a sane way. Is it virtually impossibile for me to install Debian right now?

This'll sound beyond retarded, but the laptop I got for college came with Windows 10. I dual boot on my home PC, but because of the laptop's autistic EFI problems I can't have both Linux and Windows dual booting, only one or another. I've tried it with mint, Ubuntu, and solus. You think if I switched to legacy bootloader mode, reinstalled windows 10 and then Linux it would function properly? I've narrowed it down to the bootloader not recognizing one or the other. This kind of horseshit is exactly the reason I was hesitant about buying a laptop in the first place.

anons, I just finished trying out KDE and XFCE on Linux Mint coming from MATE. KDE was buggy and imo quite ugly, and XFCE lacked a network manager, and when I installed WICD network manager it would claim to connect to the network but I still had no connection.

KDE breaks and XFCE lacks basic features. Also KDE was noticeably slower than MATE and XFCE.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?
I successfully updated the kernel settings and installed the new kernels 5 times so far but no matter what I do, the kernel stays identical now. No, always
make menuconfig

Also the new kernel is getting a panic: there's an init but it can't be executed (error -8 - that's ENOEXEC)...

Whenever you copy a config to a new kernel always run silentoldconfig. It goes though what options have changed or been added.

the problem with kde is can you really call it customizability if ever little change breaks something? and let's be hones kde breaks often, most of the time it's pretty minor but it's still a break
>>
>>57419708
Every KDE major version has significantly reduced customization options as well.

I was using xfce before plasma, and customization was a pain. Multi-monitor broke all the time, could not set hotkeys to work across screens. Menus were non intuitive.
In plasma I had zero trouble and did not have to search my ass of for custom configuration files.

>>57419708
That's true, but I have come to the conclusion that my time is better spent trying to fix these minor things than toiling away to manually configuring xfce.

I never said that customization in xfce was easy, I merely said that it's more customizable, which is a fact. In the end, the only current DE that's usable is mate. Sure, dconf-editor is horrid, but thankfully it's virtually never needed, and the rest of the configuration is simple, straightforward, and works.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Not wrong at all. Pulse doesn't even expose access to the full feature set (hardware volume controls, mutes, boosts, etc) of your sound card.

You're going to be doing a lot more work to fix issues introduced in a rolling release than you would be doing to fix the issues caused by a new LTS every 2 years.

You don't need to reinstall if you don't want to. There is a version upgrade function.

What are some good native linux games? Not games that run through wine. Preferably strategy/simulation.

Also from what I've seen most linux games seem to require Ubuntu. Is this right? Are they packaged as debs? Could you convert them to other formats?

He is running a distribution of Linux (without GNU) on his mac. I've seen it myself. I'm pretty sure he uses gnome.

That doesn't matter though. Using a distribution of Linux at his age is already pretty rare and commendable.

I'm pretty sure GNOME has touchscreen capabilities my friend.

So...
>Gnome: shitty defaults, barely no options. Like it or bust.
>Ubuntu - Unity: NIH-syndrome, shits the bed whenever you try a version upgrade or try to clean no longer needed dependencies.
>KDE: pants-on-head-retarded defaults, too many options to even find what you're looking for. Like 4 different sliders for the mouse movement that never manage to get the correct feel

Why live brehs
