1. Respects your freedom first and foremost, according to a social contract.

1. It necessarily compromises your freedom, even if you don't want/need it to.
2. True.
3. True.
4. Is Rawhide usable?
5. Not sure what this even means. Fedora Project is funded by Red Hat and Red Hat is liable for anything that FP does.
6. Repeat of point #3

So overall worse than Debian because it necessarily compromises freedom and it's practically owned by Red Hat (a single entity which cooperates with the NSA). Also the Fedora installer is terrible.

Wouldnt literally any of the fairly minimal ones do, provided you configure it properly?(ie not leaving all the kernel modules on in arch)
Gentoo is the obvious answer, maybe the compiling and use flags would be meaningful here.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm using Debian stable.
My hard disk is partitioned like this: 12GB root, 900GB home

I want my tmp folder to exist on the home partition, to avoid running out of /tmp space when making long recordings in audacity.

So I removed /tmp, created /home/tmp with permissions 1777, and created a symlink at /tmp pointing to /home/tmp and it seems to work fine except that the /tmp folder doesn't get cleared at boot/shutdown.

I'm guessing that's because the procedure that tries to clear the /tmp folder happens before the /home/ partition is mounted.

Any suggestions on what to do about this? I've googled boot order, tmp clearing, etc etc, haven't managed to find anything yet.

You listed reasons why they are not the SAME instead of COMPARABLE

1. Both do not have x.org server in default installation
2. No username/hostname defined
3. Similar install size
4. 3rd party builds like PPA or AUR

Every distribution doesn't have it, because every distribution offers a minimal installer.

According to you, every distribution is the same and comparable. According to you, we don't need any distributions, because they're all the same.

Ubuntu makes a release every six months, and supports those releases for 18 months with daily security fixes and patches to critical bugs.

As Ubuntu prepares for release, we “freeze” a snapshot of Debian's development archive (“sid”). We start from “sid” in order to give ourselves the freedom to make our own decisions with regard to release management, independent of Debian's release-in-preparation. This is necessary because our release criteria are very different from Debian's.

As a simple example, a package might be excluded from Debian “testing” due to a build failure on any of the 11 architectures supported by Debian “sarge”, but it is still suitable for Ubuntu if it builds and works on only three of them. A package will also be prevented from entering Debian “testing” if it has release-critical bugs according to Debian criteria, but a bug which is release-critical for Debian may not be as important for Ubuntu.

As a community, we choose places to diverge from Debian in ways that minimize the difference between Debian and Ubuntu. For example, we usually choose to update to the very latest version of Gnome rather than the older version in Debian, and we might do the same for key other pieces of infrastructure such as X or GCC. Those decisions are listed as Feature Goals for that release, and we work as a community to make sure that they are in place before the release happens.

I accidentally installed debian stable, how to I upgrade to unstable?
>>
>>57435285
You could switch the repo config in you sources.list and do a dist-upgrade but I would just install it over from the start. Sometimes moving from one branch of debian to the other can leave old annoying configuration files.
>>
>>57435285
Upgrading from Stable is actually the preferred way to install Testing or Unstable.
To upgrade, you
- Edit the file: /etc/apt/sources.list
- Replace all instances of "jessie" with either "unstable" or "sid" (purely personal preference between the two).
- Remove the lines with either "update" or "security" in them because unstable doesn't need extra updates or security patches
- run apt update
- run apt full-upgrade (or apt-get dist-upgrade)

It's also preferred to have a minimal installation (e.g. no DE) before upgrading, because the large gap between versions when upgrading is more likely to lead to issues.

Very noob type question but I tried installing ubuntu on a toshiba satellite CL45 using a USB. I wiped all previous data and did a clean install of ubuntu. However it does not want to... stick. Whenever I unhook the USB from the laptop it will not boot. Whenever I restart the laptop it asks me if I want to install ubuntu.

I looked on a few forums and all I could find was something about turning off UEFI in the Bios. However when I go to the Bios the UEFI part is grayed out and can't be changed.

How do I make my terminal window look pretty?

I'm currently using GDM and Gnome on Wayland.

I'm looking for lightweight, pretty, and fairly user friendly to configure.

Also what are some good file managers. Nautilus has some annoying tendancies, primarly typing automatically starts a search I prefer the Windows way where typing goes to the first entry with that letter.

Thank you.

>What are some good DE/WM setups?
That's a stupid, subjective question.
Look into all the available environments and decide for yourself.

>I'm looking for lightweight, pretty, and fairly user friendly to configure.
Lightweight is a buzzword, with no meaning. User friendly too and "easy to configure" is subjective. No one can tell you this, but yourself after testing it on your own.

I just think the 4 software freedoms laid out by the Free Software Foundation are important for allowing users to control their software instead of the other way around. I don't know how you extrapolate that into communism, but it's actually not a government system or mandated or anything like that.

From Wikipedia:
>An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. All computer programs, excluding firmware, require an operating system to function.
A kernel is one vital component in an operating system, but it alone doesn't make one. Linux is used in various operating systems.

I like Wiki, but their reasoning here is retarded. It reminds me of
cat file.txt | grep text

Most commonly used recommended way to grep text from a file. It works, but is it actually correct?
The question asks how to grep text from a file, so the correct answer should be:
grep text file.txt

Same goes with the operating system question. The most commonly used term != the technically correct term. Both, GNU and Linux are incomplete operating systems; together they form a complete core OS. So referring to both as operating system is correct, but it isn't what you're actually using; it's on of the many combinations: GNU with Linux.

Hey guys, I'm trying to set up a virtual machine with QEMU/KVM to run Debian on. The host machine runs Arch.

I've been trying to set up an internet connection on the guest VM but without success. Leaving the default networking configuration on when launching the vm, I simply get 100 % packet loss when trying to ping something. I have a Windows 7 vm too but that one works flawlessly.

I heard I should set up a bridge, but I wonder what I'm doing wrong. I attempted to set up a bridge using this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_bridge#With_iproute2 tutorial, but every time I set my normal network interface (eno1 in my case) have it's master as br0, a bridge I just created, the internet on the host machine stop's working. Any help would be much appreciated!

Help me, /g/.

I've been using Arch without dual boot for one year already. I play my games on my GPU-Passthrough VM but running two OS at the same time is too much some times.

I'm almost going back to Windows, since there's nothing that stops me from using mainly using open source software there.

Help me not doing something stupid, /g/.
>>
>>57440741
Well, do you really need to play games via GPU pass through? Is wine not enough? Because for anything I play, it certainly is, though most of the stuff I play already works on GNU/Linux by default.
Anyway, freedom has it's costs my friend. Do you really want to give up your freedom for something as stupid as to get to play the newest Battlefield or whatever the moment it comes out at 120 fps?
>>
>>57440724
From experience I've never had an issue going from stable to newer stable.

Only time something went wrong was going from Stable to Beta the dnf system-upgrade plugin crashed and I got stuck in a reboot loop but that was easily fixed.
>>
>>57440772

I have a G27 wheel and the support for GNU/Linux is absolutely shit. The rest of my games should run fine-ish.

Main problem being ARMA 3 and osu, which I never tried on Wine.

>>57440733

It should be running by default. I didn't have to tweak anything for my Windows VM.
>>
>>57440405
Didn't work, anon. the Umangu Server ISO wouldn't install on my drive.
>>
>>57440806
I didn't have to tweak anything either for my Windows VM, that one works. It's my Debian VM that isn't working.

Government control of the economy is socialism.
Giving control to a national government instead of an international one would fall under national socialism.

>Wait a second... so Hillary Clinton is less socialist than Donald Trump?
I would say her retarded social policies make her more socialist. Trump doesn't advocate nationalization of the industry though, he just has protectionist tariff policies.

>they guy and his followers said something, I'll just say they're joking/lying because I don't want to face the truth that they considered themselves to be socialists

They also considered themselves the master race.

But the reality of the facts is that the scientific consensus admits they were extreme right-wing.

So no, you're the one embarrassing yourself here.

>Government control of the economy is socialism.

>Trump doesn't advocate nationalization
Who, the one who keeps talking about taking our business back from China? I don't think we're talking about the same Trump then.

>Hillary has retarded social policies
She has common sense social policies. But thanks for showing your true colours.
>>
>>57441962
>Government control of the economy is socialism.
Excuse me, but are you retarded?

Socialism is about social justice and equality.

Government control is something else entirely. The government might control the economy in order to seek socialist values, but not necessarily.

How old are you?
>>
>>57442037
>scientific consensus on unscientific matters like politics has any worth whatsoever
>thinks someone can be extreme right-wing while holding left-wing economic beliefs
>thinks that "taking business back from China" means state expropriation of private industry and not making it harder for businesses to operate overseas by raising tariffs (neither of which I support by the way
>thinks that subsidizing poverty and locking people into one choice of healthcare is a common sense social policy
So no, you're the one embarrassing yourself here.

Your internationalist branch of socialism may be about this. But there are other branches as well. And government control of the economy is a common theme among all socialist governments.
