Okay /g/., hold me the fuck down

I decided to check if my Intel HD 4600 on my desktop has Vulkan support.

So i downloaded the intel tool to update gpu drivers on ubuntu 16.04, ran the update and switched on the iGPU (i normally use a gtx 760) in uefi, connected the hdmi cable to the card and finally ran Ubuntu.

Turns out the gtx 760 is rendering shit while the display is connected to the intel igpu.

what does /g/ think? Is anyone intrerested by this?
Apparently X can do optimus on desktops too.
Or at least route output from the nvidia gpu to intel display.

As you can see nvidia driver detects no screens , glxgears use nvidia gpu, and there is no vsync, the igpu has RGB limited colors, but overall this seems strange to me.

Can someone try to reproduce?

>PC has been acting as a brick for the last three months because installing a generic kernel would defeat the purpose but I can't figure out what the fuck is messing my install up and I'm to lazy to look each option up

So you tried compiling your own kernel rightaway, instead of using debian-sources or gentoo-sources?

So what size does /g/ make their Swap partitions? Half the size of RAM or same size of RAM?
>>
>>57405679
Well I've been following the handbook and I don't recall reading anything about whatever that is.
Besides, compiling your own kernel isn't that hard in itself, I'm just being a lazy shit.
>>
>>57405706
Entirely depends on what you're doing, how much RAM you have and if you want to hibernate.

You don't even need swap for casual use
>>
>>57405706
If you don't know what you are doing: Same size of RAM.
>>
>>57405714
yes compiling is not hard. but its far easier to do 'localmodconfig'
>>
>>57405743
I don't have anymore free slots in my motherboard tho...
>>
>>57405706
Loonix is pretty intelligent when it comes to memory handling. Don't be surprised when you have 70-90% usage, if new shit comes in, it just gets replaced with unused stuff, so basically you don't even need swap, but hybernating needs ofc a place to save all the ram. That said, hybernating is gay anyway.
>>
>>57405706
Old manuals say 1gb for every 100gb of storage space.
Properly function systems should need more than ~3gb though, unless you like hibernate over suspend
>>
>>57405792
"should" meant "should not"
>>
>>57405777
Not only hybernating. Also:
rebooting
suspending
turning it off

What do you guys use to create bootable USB's from windows?

I want to carry around a bootable rescue USB to boot into on "unresponsive" computers to retrieve files from them. It would also be helpful if I decide to install linux in another system. I was using Win32DiskImager but that seems to fuck up something about the drives : One of my 128GB flash drives suppsoedly grew to 400GB after deleting the partition Win32DiskImager made in Gparted. This was after I wanted to restore the flash drive to its normal configuration as a large NTFS storage unit.

Despite the fact that you've arranged the taskbar, desktop items, and overall copied the aesthetics as closely as you could to how it was for me on Windows as so I could transition to this smoothly, I have immediately determined after not even giving it a try at all that this is something that I can never learn and I humbly request that you put Windows back onto my computer this instant!

Have windows, shrink your partitions by the amount you want for GNU/Linux and leave it unallocated, create an usb installer with cp (cp installer.iso /dev/sdX && sync), dd or win32diskimager, boot it, select the enpty unallocated space to make your / mount point, install, install and autoconfigure grub2 if it wasn't done automatically

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Nah. Tried various flags. Nothing got rid of tearing. And if I forced it at a driver level in an xorg config or something, the desktop itself had no tearing, but videos and manchildren hobbies all have a lot of stutter.

I think it might just be something I have to deal with in X11 since it sounds like wayland fixes the issue I guess.

The only thing where it does happen to me is the video player in firefox (and for the chromium shills it also happens in the one in surf) but this can be easily fixed by using mpv.
gnome on wayland is pretty stable too if you can not fix it otherwise.

Would like some advice

I have an external drive mounted to /home/anon/media. It contains folders such as Videos, Pictures, Books.

However, I would like the folders in ~/media to show up in my home folder as well. Would setting up symlinks be the only way to do this? Am I unable to use mounting tools to have the contents of two filesystems exist in a folder together?
>>
>>57410256

Just as I thought, you're just another naive person who takes all the myths and memes seriously, without a doubt.
First of all, Arch isn't more "configurable" than any other distribution. Secondly, Debian has more branches than just stable. You have no clear idea about stability. You just throw it around as a buzzword. Do you consider your Firefox running on Windows as stable? Yes? Everything else is considered "stable" on Arch or similar distributions. They pick up the software as it's deemed "stable" by upstream and who release the software.

I suggest you look up in to the key defining features of a distribution and then make a choice based on that, instead of basing it off memes and myths you saw on here or elsewhere.

Ok so they all want to work properly? Good job. Problem is they don't.

Pacman does that.
If I remember correctly, apt's "purge" flag does exactly that too, so add apt on that list.

That depends on your environment. You're obviously using a different desktop environment or the same, but with different default keybindings.

Because there is no executable named "subl". Hit TAB to autocomplete it to "sublime" and then press enter.

Yep, sure does. Although I have to admit, I'm now only using KDE out of principal for wanting a push towards a QT DE. There are some distro-related tweaks I could do to probably make it perform better, but I've kind of realized that having thumbnails isn't a big deal to me anymore. (Especially when there is a patch for GTK2 that gives the same functionality)

I've switched over to using hydrus network to manage my images now, especially since I've learned I can share the library with a sym link. There are things on it that are just weird, and theming KDE is kind of a pain in the ass. Apparently the highlight title-bar color needs to be modified manually? I found that a little weird, so I just switched to arc-dark. There also aren't a lot of theme options for it.

Hint: everything will be equally shit. Your distribution won't matter. Your desktop environment won't matter. Assuming your browse the same content, with the same software, the distribution won't matter. The difference between performance on a "minimal" desktop environment consisting of a stand-alone window manager and other utilities and something "heavy" like KDE with all the graphically/CPU intensive stuff turned off will be negligible.

So musicbee DOES run in Wine, but I had to do a lot of fiddling with it the second time around. You will probably have to install 4.0 framework yourself, then might have to fiddle with the internet settings since WINE didn't coem out of box working with last.fm for me for whatever reason.

However, I switched to MPD and have no regrets. I really like how seamless it is, and it has so many fucking features to configure and tweak the way you want. The fact that it can run as a service in the background is also super nice. If I want to listen to something, I simply put it in the folder, and it's there because the folder monitoring werks well. It never wastes a second buffering, it will start playing as soon as you want. I think linux has a severe lack of good music player GUI's desu. I like having a cover art browser and album artist picture browser. I think that's why I couldn't use clementine, I just think the UI was too outdated for me. Small icons really don't do a whole lot for me, either.
Overall, the only modern feeling music experiences on Linux have been the following for me:
1) MPD + Cantata (because the GUI combines well with how powerful MPD is)
2) Tomahawk (but it is still a buggy release. Lot of potential though)
3) Lollypop (same as above)

I still just use musicbee on windows for the things I'm not comfortable letting Linux handle though, for now.

I suggest you don't use a file-dialog to organize and manipulate pictures. I suggest you use a proper file manager and an image editing-organizing program, which is part of some image viewers.
>>
>>57413260
That and the normal file manager
>>
>>57413278
post pic? I've used ubuntu before and the file picker in firefox will be small (nothing you can easily do about it sorry) but I don't know why your thumbnails in nemo would be small

well I meant of the whole window but that seems plenty big.

I struggle to believe there isn't a zoom in anywhere in nemo. Try holding ctrl and scrolling your mousewheel, that's the shortcut in KDE

You can only fit in like 4 images at worst on the biggest size and it persists on other folders. It's not usable

Install pcmanfm and change the sizes from >preferences>display>Icons. Nautilus might have similar settings, I don't know, I quit using it years ago.

Too complicated. Why doesn't systemd handle these?
>>
>>57413399

Because it's out of its scope.

In kate (text editor), I can't find the proper syntax highlighting for writing VBA macros. Visual Basic doesn't appear there. What should I look for?

If it doesn't exist (how?!), can I write my own? How much would it take from scratch?

Fun fact.

X is actually also a DE. It ships a text editor, pager, clock, and more. There is even spyware included. (xeyes)

I think I know how to fix this one.
Open your Konsole (terminal) and input the following command:
vim
Then type in this:
:syntax on

I want to get the alsa volume level to put on my dwm status bar with xsetroot
amixer outputs
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 65536
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 32766 [50%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 32766 [50%] [on]

How do I get just that volume level %? awk/sed sorcery?

Yeah, just run the vimtutor and you'll be capable of using it to do basic editing.

It isn't necessary to learn, but it can be used over ssh, it's very ubiquitous like you said, and if you take it beyond the basics it's a very versatile and useful tool.

If you use pulse, use the pulse device:

amixer -D pulse get Master | grep -Eom1 '[0-9]+%'

How do you learn this kind of thing? Extensive manpage reading?
>>

For learning the command line:

https://linuxjourney.com/

To learn specific commands, just look at their man pages. "man $command".

So I'm trying to configure smplayer to work with livestreamer, but can't find anything with an issue like this.

I think it has something to do with the pipe and smplayer, since MPV works just fine. When I try to play a stream from shitbox under smplayer, it doesn't even play. Just gives me this:
Playing: -
[file] Reading from stdin...
Failed to recognize file format.
Exiting... (Errors when loading file)

(Of course after some other stuff that doesn't seem relevant)

Anybody have a suggestion? Not a big deal I can just tweak up the MPV settings a bit.

how much GNU is there actually in linux? or how much linux is there in GNU? code wise?

is it like majority GNU or majority linux components?

it just feels like RMS is pulling a meme on me when he paints his picture where linux is basically a tiny gadget that makes up a small fraction of the work that went into modern GNULINUX systems

someone pls REDPILL me

>>
>>57414755
I don't use GNU at all. But the major distros contain about 3-5% of GNU impurities, the rest is made by The Linux Foundation and other independent developers.
