That's the last time I buy before looking into whether or not it even has sound capabilities, much less whether or not it can be installed easily.

Should I return the laptop, or is there a distro I can install on it without being a hassle? Trying to install Debian only shows the USB stick I used to boot the installation in the first place, not to mention that the keyboard didn't work (I had to use a USB keyboard instead). Should I go with Ubuntu or some kind of Arch?

It means that your pangocairo version is too old. Either compile pangocairo too, or get a older version of i3-gaps (the better idea). Check which version of i3 is in your repos and compile the gaps fork of that version.

Alternativly just use bspwm (IMHO better anyway).

Add "systemd.unit=your target" to your kernel line in your bootloader. I'm sure you're smart enough to find the right target which corresponds run level 3 of sysv.
I seriously hope you never require how to list a directory's content with extended info, such as owners. Because that would require you days to figure out and wait for an answer.

- Visually appealing, I don't want an interface that looks like it's stuck in the 1990's

depends if you want a minimal install or rolling distro. If rolling - opensuse tumbleweed, debian sid, gentoo
If a minimal install you can also use debian, gentoo, or ubuntu minimal but you have to keep in mind that most of ubuntu packages come preconfigured (some people would say bloated).

Fedora has new packages, a pretty well preconfigured gnome desktop and uses different system tools. Other than that Debian stable has much more officially (and security) supported packages, also better software availability through repositories. But the software is old yeah.

I would say that for a windows-purpose (media, web browsing, productivity, gaming) desktop usage Ubuntu is better than both.
But for developing i would choose Fedora though personally.
>>
>>57390889
Debian testing is ok, but you may experience lack of packages compared to sid (or even stable). (Debian unstable). For example no Krita.

i know screen res is currently 1366x768 but i have my thinkpad plugged into 1080p ips monitor when i'm at my desk

10/10 would use wine again, i'm okay with everything else running in this window too as now i can switch between different things as i used to on windows

it actually doesn't bother me. i initially tried linux in 2013 with fedora, back when yum was used rather than dny or whatever is current. i tried out manjaro, and crunchbang too. i didn't really understand it, and i was doing it with a shitty toshiba satellite. i didn't touch it again after basic functions wouldn't work, like the laptop wouldn't go into sleep mode, was really laggy, etc

fast forward to a few months ago, i build my first desktop and get my first thinkpad (t430). i put lubuntu on my thinkpad, and it didn't just work. the cursor would disappear after i returned from suspend, sleep wouldn't work, and it get bad screen tearing. even after i reinstalled xfce power manager, and installed drivers from a ppa. i decided to install stock 16.04, and it actually worked. i was amazed to discover that suspend/sleep works on a laptop with linux.

as for the desktop, i went with radeon because i cheaped out. little did i know that there are conflicts with X and amd drivers now, so when i found out i installed fedora. didn't really like it - it wasn't easy babby shit. then i tried out debian, and got pissed when i realized i had to manually install wifi firmware, and edit xconf when i didn't even know what the fuck those settings meant.

so then i just decided to install ubuntu, the only conflicts i've had are the wifi occassionally stops working and i have to restart the network manager, and secondly, its actually too handholding and i end up using the terminal and package manager often. not that its a bad thing though, its what has actually taught me things, versus just point and click like windows.

tldr, i am too newb for other distros, but am slowly learning
>>
>>57398801

i'm taking about ubuntu but with different DEs, you could install them even on your current installation by the way. but there are already versions of ubuntu preconfigured to work with much better DEs than the current "DE" you are rocking. try out ubuntu gnome or something i think you might like it if you don't despise unity just upon seeing it

Ubuntu makes installing systemd harder? You literally have not to do anything, it will install itself with the distribution. The same applies to Arch.

Too indecisive to pick a DE for Ubuntu and install.

I tried various and they all have potential but since I'm noob I don't know what extent of tweaking can be done to each.

I guess I kinda want the top combination bar from Unity (that combines the Linux status bar with the top menu bar of program windows so the min/max/close buttons are top left), but with the currently open windows in the unused middle portion like a more traditional taskbar. Then some sort of hidden GNOME like launcher that appears on super or something?

Really don't know.

2. Idk, you should research which DE does that best
3. Idk, you should research which DE looks best to you and fits the #2 criteria.

i'm about to get another, more portable laptop (probably a used thinkpad x220 but that's not for this thread) for school, taking into lectures and travel, and would like to try out linux (windows user all my life). i've only got two related questions.

i'd probably like to choose some user friendly distro similar to windows but easy to experiment/play around with later if i got time, and am currently reading the Babbies First Linux article on the wiki - i'm probably going to be doing MOSTLY internet and office stuff but i'm also a biology student about to start my bachelor's thesis and it's possible that i'm going to need to analyze data from the lab etc. our whole lab/department uses graphpad prism, with some exceptions here and there but nothing important. i myself haven't even used it yet but still - is there a good linux alternative for that? and what's the best linux distro that would fullfill those requirements?

>tl;dr: open-source alternative to graphpad prism? best distro for bio student that does mostly office work and shitposting but also scientific data analysis?

cmd1 | cmd2

The output of cmd1 is being directed as input into cmd2.

cmd1 &> | cmd2

Results in an error, because &> is for redirecting standard output into a file. Since | isn't a valid filename, it spits out an error.

You should really just run those commands and experiment to figure it out yourself.
