Buying new PSU and GPU tonight when there's no delivery costs on mindfactory.
>>
Is a semi/full Modular PSU basically required for M-Itx builds? They cost much more than normal PSUs and I'm on a pretty tight budget.
>>
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/VgNX2R
Is 550 watts enough for this?
>>
>>57385001
unless you want cables errywhere, yes.

>>57385006
yup. the AMP! Extreme draws 250 watts max, so you even still have about 200 watt buffer left with a 550W psu
>>
>>57385001
Depends on the case. If you want something roughly shoebox-sized then pretty much yes. You can usually stuff longer cables in there but they might mess with the airflow or cause your side panel to bulge out.

>>57384931
Neat. I have that PSU and the 0 RPM mode on it is amazing. Coudnt get it to move even with prime95 + valley benchmark at the same time.
>>
>>57385113
>>57385059
I was thinking of getting either the Phanteks Enthoo or the Thermaltake V1, will I need a modular PSU for either of those?

Is the Asus PCE-N15 a decent wireless adapter? It's currently $15 on Amazon with a rebate, but for every review that says "4/5 pretty good" there's another that calls it a slow piece of shit that constantly drops its connection.

I don't know a goddamn thing about networking, is this thing alright?

This is what it'll look like with a nonmodular PSU. This one uses a 900W one though, a more reasonable 500ish watt PSU will have slightly less cables.

So it'll be snug and might not be pretty but it'll fit just fine. The whole "mitx requires nonmodular PSU" rule is for qt small boxes like DAN case. A shrunk-down proper case like those two should have enough space to tug cables away.

>>

Wait for vega. AMD usually has more reasonable prices.
>>
>>57385678
Sorry, can't wait any more. I'll buy a 480
>>
>>57385734
Vega is coming at start of 2017 though, so a few months. There are rumours about RX 475 & 485 coming soonish too.
>>
>>57385802
sorry I need new GPU now. If the 485 and Vega will be significantly better and at the same price level as the RX, I'll buy either then.
>>
>>57385802
"wait few months" is a largely useless advice. There's always new graphics cards coming out. You buy one in your budget, then when you can't play games with it any more because it's too slow and outdated, you buy another one.
>>
>>57385317
Wireless connections is worse than any landline, even with a piece of shit Realtek 8111G NIC.
No matter how close or unobstructed you are to the wireless access point, you'll never get anywhere close to the full advertised speed of the router or wi-fi card. And it is affected by humidity, so on a rainy or foggy day you can actually drop packets with alarming frequency like the USPS. Just drill some holes in your wall, push a patch cable through, and crimp the ends with RJ-45 connectors.

AMD doesnt have anything that'll compete against 1070 at the moment. So if you want 1070 but don't want to pay extra to the green jew then waiting for vega is not that bad idea. Same thing with Zen.

But yeah 480 is pretty good for it's price. If one can't wait any longer then buying it is not a bad idea.

What? ROG Strix is always at top-three in benchmarks. It runs quiet & cool and the factory OC is very close to what you can get with manual adjustments.

1. no i7, you don't need it
2. get the i5-6600
3. overclocking is dead since haswell refresh. by the time you need it, you can already buy a new PC

Yes, there's not much power draw added. An SSD pulls like 10 watts, as do HDDs

>>57390349
basically the platter size is most important for the speed, the "5400" rpm isn't actually 5400 but power adaptive, so it can still peak quite high under load, so it's just as fast, quieter, cheaper, more reliable, uses less power

in every category the 1tb+ platter power saving drives are preferable

dunno about the very most recent blacks, but an ssd cache will do more for perf than any rpm ever will anyway for cheaper

>>
>>57385317
As long as it has the wireless connections you wan't and isn't the most extreme dirt cheap usb adapter you'll be fine. Everyone knows wireless is slower than wired by quite a lot. The only people that post negative reviews on those are people who expect their same wired performance through 6 walls and multiple floors of concrete and are pissed when it isn't.

I just got a TPL-link pci card like that for about the same price and it's been performing faster than the built in wifi on my laptop so you should be fine
>>
>>57390400
I looked into it and all cards shipping after Nov 1st already have the bios update and thermal pad applied, so i'm not concerned.

Is having an intake fan only a centimetre above your CPU cooler a good idea? I'm debating whether or not to just leave the case fan off entirely. Fan stacking doesn't do much, as far as I'm aware, but I'm really no expert on airflow.
>>
>>57391221
you need to balance the intake and out fans, intakes are only really necessary if you have a lot of airflow, underpressure (more outflow) attracts more dust but will sorta vacuum up all the hot air inside, overpressure repels dust but is more likely to create stagnant pockets

1. Is buying an operating system completely necessary or can I pirate one? Will it fuck my shit up?
2. Is it worth buying an optical drive? I consume most of my media over the internet but is it worth the extra money to buy one just in case?

I currently have a GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G

I hear that the i5-6600K 3.5GHz quad is pretty good, but then what about a cooler, preferably a water one?

and then are there any good mobos that have several usb ports and not just like 3?

does anyone of you have experience with upgrading pre built pcs? a friend of mine has one and wants to get a new gpu currently. i havent yet looked inside the case myself but i know we have to replace the PSU anyway. The RAM and CPU are fine so if the PSU is swappable the only part that im worrying about is the mainboard. is there anything restricting im not thinking about given the fact its a bare bones fujitsu or whatever board?

Get a faster ram and a better cooler. You don't need a full ATX case and I'd go with someone other than EVGA, unless they fixed the exploding GPU issue.

Stupid question:

If I need more RAM, I can always just buy another set of what I currently have, correct?

So if I get 2x8 ram now for 16gb, if I end up needing 32 down the line, I can just buy another 2x8 of the exact RAM I have now, correct?

Or do I need to buy a whole new 32gb set?

Yes.

Your issue is that -down the line- might be quite a few years and by then maybe some motherboards will no longer support DDR3 or you might not find that set anymore.

>>

It's not playing with fire, you simply need good cooling. This is how i see it and what your options are:
1. Bad value i7-6700 build with small form factor.

3. Good value i5-6600K build with small form factor.

ATX isn't an option. Most M-ITX isn't even an option with the space I'm working with.
>>
>>57411243
You mean mATX right? Then go with an ITX build, but ITX is usually more expensive and you'll need good airflow for such a small case.
>>
>>57411423
M-ITX as in Mini ITX. Or is that not how people initialise it?

Anyway, I'm well aware, but with ambients going up to 45 C and very limited airflow, why bother trying to wring out those tiny performance gains at the risk of compromising my thermals?

Seems silly to act like every person is going to overclock. Even people who are in a much better position to do so don't tend to mess with it, it's not the default.
>>
>>57411589
Mini ITX = ITX, there are smaller form factors but what you want is (mini) ITX.

Fuck off.

What's the difference between using a second GPU for PhysX and mGPU/sli?
>>
>>57414282
I'll tell you why they're similar: WASTE OF FUCKING MONEY
No one uses PhysX anymore and mGPU supports are dead

Thank you

I started working, saved some cash. Finally got to be able to buy a build that crushes everything you would throw at it.
Ordered it last night .. and then canceled it this evening. I realised I don't play games any more so I couldn't rationalise the purchase

What games do you lads play or use all that power on?
>>
>>57415117
Good choice. Save for your retirement instead.
>>
>cant get a cheap used LGA1366 motherboard with overclocking possibilities anymore because some big time youtuber spilled the beans on how xeons are good for gaming
god damn

CS:GO, HITMAN, DOOM. Dishonored 2 when it comes out.

What do you think?

You don't need 500W for this. Honestly why even build a computer if these are the parts you're buying?
>>
>>57415802
>Honestly why even build a computer if these are the parts you're buying?
Not him, but you're clearly a fucking moron. Nothing wrong with the build.
>>
>>57415117
>not building the ultimate 24/7 shitposting machine for $300 and blowing the rest on whores
>>
>>57415612
No, buy everything at once, unless you see a great sale.
>>
>>57415802
No i dont need 500w but its cheap and costs literally the same as the 400w version so who gives a fuck?

>Honestly why even build a computer if these are the parts you're buying?

So whats wrong with them exactly?
>>
>>57410117
>>57415612
That's a stupid fucking idea unless you have enough spare parts to build a test computer and check each component for failures/defects
I learned the hard way after spending $290 on a motherboard and waited 6 months for a cheap Xeon E3 35W TDP CPU to go on sale. The motherboard was dead and I couldn't RMA it by then.
>>
>>57415741
Objectively there's nothing wrong, but personally i'd get a SanDisk SSD Plus and a Sapphire Nitro 470.

I want to game at 1080p. The only thing I'm not sure of is which of these PSUs to go with:

>EVGA 650 GQ (semi modular, $70)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017HA3SQ8/?tag=pcpapi-20

>EVGA 650 G1 (fully modular, $80)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K85X2AW/?tag=pcpapi-20

>EVGA 650 G2 (fully modular, $80)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0106RDIN2/?tag=pcpapi-20

I like the idea of a 1050ti for the GPU, particularly the ROG STRIX OC one though I can't find it for sale anywhere yet:

Today was a super good day. I think I'll treat myself to a new SSD, the Plextor M8Pe 512GB.
Thanks FBI. You're not Russian hacks after all.
Anyone up/g/rade here?

Hey /g/ Im thinking of building a new rig with a 6600k and want to overclock the shit out of it but I can't decide if I should go with regular air cooling or a water cooling system. Is water cooling worth it or is it just a gigantic meme?
>>
>>57417818
imagine it being summer, it's hot as fuck and you need to cool off

would you rather jump in a pool or have your friend fan you with a book
>>
>>57417818
It's a meme unless you do a custom loop.
>>
What is the best 2tb 7200rpm harddrive thats less than $100?
>>
>>57417818
>Is water cooling worth it or is it just a gigantic meme?
Yes it is. It's only worth it if you absolutely need it because you're going to torture your CPU and even then, only custom loops are really worth it.
Or you simply don't care about money, in that case you should get whatever you want.

>>57417839

What's the difference between a b150 and h110 motherboard?

Just get a 500 GB 850 Evo.

Do you even play more than five games at a time?

Yes

>>57418278
H110 is a consumer chipset and the b150 is a business chip set.

I just bought the MSI mortar microATX motherboard. Itll be used with a i5-6500 and a gigabit gtx 1060 6gb

Did I make a big mistake?
>>
What's the point in getting a gaming motherboard over a regular one? I'm willing to spend the extra shekels if there's a tangible benefit I'll get from it if I don't SLI.
>>
>>57420134
Literally none. Sometimes they're made of higher quality parts, but that's about it. Just get something from Gigabyte's Ultra Durable line.
>>
>>57420181
Thank you.
>>
>>57420134

Extras on motherboards are a meme unless you know what it is and will use it. You feelings are correct.

Where can I get b its of metal in order to mount my reservoir and pump in weird places? I had a great place but moving my rad where I needed it robbed me of the location. Now I need to secure both of these some how. The res has holes where I need but they are recessed so my mounting hardware cant reach them. A standoff like piece of metal would be great. Can I look somewhere online for bits and pieces? Hardware store maybe instead?

Second problem is my backplate for the graphics card I just installed has two screws that for some reason will not catch. Was thinking about getting a slightly longer screw with the same diameter and trying that. Is this common?

Third thing is I want a drain in the bottom of the loom. I am using hardline tubing 10mm inside 12mm outside. Any company makes such things? I can find one of the EK site where I got my stuff. They have t splitters but I saw jays two sense has an actual valve he can open or cap when not in use.
>>
>>57420269

nm on the valve found them on EK didnt know they were called ball valves.
