if you intend on installing Linux and want to use a WWAN modem, make sure to get the Ericsson one.
Gobi ones require you to extract the windows driver from the installer and then utilise it via wrappers.
Sierra ones, no clue.
Ericsson modem works out of the box with ModemManager.

SSD can move forward to other computers. I don't upgrade screens tho since at home I use an external monitor, keyboard and mouse connected to muh Ultrabase. Every Padder should have a dock. Holds another hard drive in a caddy if want.

They paid retail. OTOH used Pads are often spectacular deals and tend to be very, very easy to work on. I can afford any notebook I want, but prefer what Pads and their docks and caddies enable me to to, and I can scatter notebooks about my home and shops without worrying if they get damaged or stolen or come to harm. For heavier work I have desktops.

Have you ever used one? X200 works fine with windows 10, and youtube runs 720p streams as well as netflix just fine. Things get a bit better under linux.

X230 works just as well as any modern laptop for day-to-day tasks. I even game on it (Mostly strategy and indie games). Once again linux helps.

Either you don't know what you are talking about, or we have differing definitions of "old"

But why would you do that when it supports libreboot? Also, the latest version of libreboot makes video performance and battery life better than stock, by improving CPU state support and allocating more vram.
>>
>>57392471
>But why would you do that when it supports libreboot?

To run Windows applications. I'm not only not paranoid, I would like the NSA to have my metada because it will look fine in any security clearance investigation and I may renew mine someday depending on employment.

libreboot should exist, but running it to no purpose on a PC not used as a classified workstation doesn' t add useful function.

Anyone know what the transparent plastic on the X200 motherboard is called, how to get a replacement?

I need to clean the motherboard because it got dirty and has some sticky grime on it.

The laptop has shown some weird errors in the past leading to some data corruption. I suspect it shorted itself in some way or another, looked like RAM errors but sticks were tested OK.

It's great and all but why deal with the shitty drive interfaces when you can have an X220 with an SSD in the MSATA and an even faster one in the SATA3, and still get an IPS screen and a really good 2nd gen i7 to boot.

Negatives are ratio and build quality obviously but because of the shielding & fan the X220 does dissipate heat better.
>>
>>57396650
You can get the intel HD 4000 tho which is actually a huge boost in graphics performance. If modern games are well optimized you can play at playable framerates. MGSV runs at ~30fps at 1366x768 on an Intel 4000. It is unplayable on the HD 3000 because it lacks DX11 support.

I found some Yosemite .dmg image, installed it through some kind of windows program, now i'm struggling to run it after i (probably) screwed something up with OSX drivers. I'd grab some suitable plastic, perhaps from a document protector, and glue it in place with clear RTV from an auto store. The sensor-safe RTV is fine for electronics and you can peel it off safely with some effort if ever necessary.

yes, it should theoretically be able to run it, given you have 4GB of RAM (though 8 are recommended); an SSD is also helpful; The processors have all the needed extensions and functionalities VT-x, (VT-d), Intel 64, Disable Execution Bit

What specs do you require? There are plenty of rugged and semi-rugged notebooks available like Getac, Itronix and Panasonic. Much love for Pads but military rugged (not just MilSpec, because there are MANY military specs) notebooks are nice and beastly. >In my case, I use a ThinkPad trackpoint and for a left-handed it's much better when inverting the buttons, the right button is much more accessible for the thumb when my index is on the trackpoint, I use gnome-settings-daemon in window maker and once changed in the GNOME preferences, all the applications without exception are inverted, and for GDM, [all which is clickable,] the result is the same no matter which button is pressed.

you can BIOS-mod the X230 and put in a keyboard from the X220
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Install_Classic_Keyboard_on_xx30_Series_ThinkPads

otherwise, X230 is a bit more expensive, has USB3.0 on the non-i7 models, and overall a slight CPU upgrade
>>
>>57416226
que?
>>
>>57416267
Both are pretty good, but the x220 is better because of the keyboard. The x230 is better because of the newer processor (and maybe IO, I think it has DisplayPort judging by the picture in >>57414611)

>>
>>57416701
Probably an increase of about 4-8% CPU-wise, also >>57416726
>>
>>57416695
The connectors are the same actually.

>>57416677
The "fuckery" is involved is an EC flash you can do in 10 minutes or less, all you need is a USB stick and access to a Linux environment

You'll also need the palmrest to be compatible with the keyboard's larger tabs, you can either just put in an X220 palmrest or use an exacto knife to make the slots in the X230 palmrest taller

There's also two pins on the connector to cover with tape to prevent something shorting out apparently, but I've read that this is optional and doesn't really make a difference

>>57416701
The CPU difference is negligible but the iGPU is a big improvement, and has DX11 support

Does small resolution on Thinkpads bothers you?

>>
>>57417686
welllllll it depends

obviously you don't want to work a prolonged time or at home with such a small screen and shitty resolution. But considering how light and small the X series laptops are, a much larger resolution does make that much sense (in my opinion). It can be a drawback yes, but it's fine for some developing, word processing and general internet

But in the X series, they're shit compared to the equivalent T series, starting with X240

I guess, you might need to look for kexes on your own (this is, a lot more research). I'm only starting my hackintoshing but it seems like Hackintosh is suprisingly universal concept, after installing basic "hacks" you can install it on anything that has OSX drivers. X230 has Ivy Bridge, and there was MBP with Ivy Bridge, so it should be entirely possible to run it.
