systemd does 10000000000000 things and nobody knows if it's well enough, thats basically why apple dropped systemd from the start and today it's only developed for the home system `linux' so basically you blame stallman for keeping it in upstream

Not him but, a Ubuntu like interface except during installation, it allows me to check the packages and applications I want to be installed.

For ex, I don't want Firefox, Rhythmbox and Amazon botnets because I prefer others applications. So to integrate all packages in a monolithic manner including the global bar is fucking annoying.
>>

install Gentoo or Arch then. You even have Debian netinstall or Ubuntu minimal.

I use Ubuntu minimal but when it comes to installing DE, I don't get the option to select sub-components. Only Xubuntu minimal or Ubuntu server which leaves me at blank screen on startup, worst case CLI mode with no X.

So I installed Loonix for the first time. It's Fedora 24. It's pretty good, and I'll probably end customizing it a bit more with GTK themes and such.

But one thing that's bugging me is the fuck ugly fonts. Looks like shit on Chromium and some parts of the DE, what do? Also, I'm having a lot of trouble trying to compile and install software like cmus and mpv. I have the files kept in a "Source" directory, but when I ./compile, shit comes up saying I'm missing this and that. Sorry for being a noob faggot, I just need all the help I can get. Someone suggest not using Fedora in the first place, but it was the only newfag friendly distro I liked.
>>
>>57372500
you should try https://solus-project.com/

everything out of the box is great and the package manager has mpv and probably most of the other shit you want. the default font rendering is great and it helps if you install the rest of the fonts available in the repo too.
>>
>>57372500
to fix fonts

dnf install freetype-freeworld

echo "Xft.lcdfilter: lcddefault" > ~/.Xresources

Hintstyle to slight and AA-mode to rGBA in gnome settings.
>>
>>57372448
>Maybe you configured `apt` weirdly?
Haven't changed anything regarding apt configs, everything standard. Maybe my VPS provider did some shit to the image.

I found a workaround though, should prevent overwritten configs by explicitly telling apt to not overwrite stuff.
Dpkg::Options {
"--force-confdef";
"--force-confold";
}
>>
>>57372500
>>57372586
Oh an fonts on Chromium are unfixable, they're not GTK dependent - blame Google.

cmus and mpv will not come in the standard installation because they provide mp3 encoding/decoding which is patented, and distributing such software without royalty in the United States is forbidden.

http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

Download both Free and Nonfree repositories for fedora 24.
Install them via double click (yumex-dnf) and confirm with password.
>>
>>57372500
should have gone ubuntu gnome
>>
>>57372500
I don't know what to tell you about fonts. I don't have an eye for what's ugly or not. Readable is my thing.
>compile and install cmus and mpv
Don't do that yet. You're new and stuff.
http://rpmfusion.org/
As root run
dnf install https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

You will now be able to install cmus and mpv from rpmfusion.org repos. Many codecs are covered by patents and Fedora aims to be runable by anyone including people who might be subject to paying for using these codecs. RPMfusion doesn't care about this and almost everyone who maintains packages for RPMfusion is also a Fedora package maintainer so you get the same quality stuff just from an unofficial channel.

The reason it's not working for you is you don't have the dependencies installed. Like for mpv you'll need ffmpeg and other stuff. For ffmpeg you'll need a ton of stuff. You can do a lot of the work automatically by running dnf builddep mpv. But if you're compiling it yourself you're probably doing it because you want to compile it with stuff not included in the default package. So you'll have to do a little bit of foot work to track it down. Most of what you'll need is packagename-devel packages. Which lets you compile stuff that uses that library. So builddep mpv is going to install ffmpeg-devel.

That OP is funny but wrong. Just look at Plan 9 to understand why.

Plan 9 is better in every technical way than Linux or BSD but no one uses because Linux/BSD are good *enough*.
The problem Winshit has is that it is haemorrhaging users thanks to retarded and pointless and evil shit like telemetry and forced upgrades. All those people are finding a comfy home in Linux and especially Ubuntu.
Steam is already on Ubuntu and has about 2000 games. There is far less reasons to stay with a shitty spyware OS now. All Microsoft had to was not be retarded but they went poo in loo crazy.

your lack of input is inconvenient but i will assume which part you are referring to

(left)
F=$(ls -1 | grep .mp3)
if [[ $F ]]

(right)
 for f in *.mp3; do
[[ $f ]]

running the same script:
Left; checks for any mp3 then continues and finishes.
Right; checks for the first mp3 then continues but when it completes, it executes for the next and so on until it reaches the final file.
what you're referencing requires a near full overhaul and gains nothing but satisfying someone else's syntax preferences

f1 () {

f2 () {

Sometimes windows just forces itself to the top of the order regardless of what you set.
Otherwise should work fine, just make sure that you don't have the disc with the other OS plugged in when you install the second OS. Afterwords you can plug the other disk back in and use the grub OS-prober to make a grub entry for it.

I've been running crunchbang linux on my aging laptop for a while now, but one day it stopped booting. I turned instead to Puppy. It's quite lightweight designed to always run in livecd mode, booting from a USB stick and storing shit it needs in RAM, so it felt like a reasonable choice for an old, shitty computer that might well be suffering from a failing hard drive that isn't worth the trouble to replace.

It features some rather... odd design decisions however, and I was wondering if there were any other linux distros that try to do the same thing, that I should try. Basically, one that runs well on a toaster that doesn't necessarily have a working hard drive. Puppy lets me do stuff like save changes into an encrypted filesystem image, and have several of those on the USB stick, and select which one I want to boot, which is neat, but not really a requirement.

I can't tell you what's exactly the cause of it, but I can tell you what's not, narrowing it down. I don't have an Arabic locale generated and enabled, but it's showing fonts just fine.

>>57380828
Actually, it's the result of having a gazilleon different one purpose """""tools""""" and strictly adhering to the alleged """"UNIX philosophy""""

Any number of those separate tools might break, and render certain functions completely useless.

Which was the case with MATE, Clemens was too busy renaming all the tools into MATE-sounding names rather than keeping the old Gnome2 names.

This caused all sorts of extreme brokenness. MATE 1.4 for example, had the funny bug where you when renaming a file (either on the desktop or within the file navigator) tried to copy or paste a filename, the display manager would segfault and you would lose your entire login session.
>>

I'm doing that on purpose because somebody called him Clemens instead of Clement or Clem in one of the Mint forums some time ago, and he sperged out. Apparently, the way french people would pronounce Clemens is earily similar to some yiddish way of saying traitor or something so he thought it was on purpose (since he is strongly anti-Israel).

this script has several style flaws:
- it is simple enough to use POSIX sh, no bash needed -> more speed
- don't parse ls, use a glob or a for loop
- never use uppercase variables in your own scripts so you don't accidently overwrite env variables, which are all uppercase
- > if [[ $F ]] || [[ $@ == *"-h"* ]]; then
quote $@ or it breaks on spaces
- > f="${a[@]/%mp3/mp3}"
here you're assigning an array to a string
either assign as array or use * instead of @

Sup guys

I switched to Xubuntu not too long ago and I'm really goddamn happy with it. I have almost achieved getting what I wanted out of a linux distro.

The thing is, I'm a pretty stupid person. I like XFCE quite a bit, along with some other software I use, along with ubuntu flavors because frankly, I don't have to do much extra after installation. I don't feel as though it's the best experience, but at least it's been the smoothiest.

So a while ago, on both Windows and hackintosh I had different programs that would allow me to snap windows to specific regions of the screen, all with the ability to use keyboards shortcuts for that, but also the ability to drag and drop a window at a specific region of the screen so it would resize and position itself how I wanted it.

Basically, if you are familiar with BetterTouchTool, this is what I'm talking about:

Apparently, my / was full (df showed 100%), so I removed stuff that wasn't necessary anymore (some files in /root that I made to cache things and various logs from /var/log / /var/tmp were moved to ~) and that helped.
Now my / is "only" 95% full and things are working again.

Now I do.

And if the earth blows up, your data is also going to poof.

There's no such thing as “redundant” or “not redundant”, there is only a degree of redundancy. You have to balance your risk assessment against the cost of protecting against them, anon.

Anway, ZFS allows you to replicate your volumes across multiple physical locations (`zfs send` / `zfs receive`), which is what I was referring to when I suggested ZFS as a replacement for rsync.

Most normal distros won't care about the hardware at all, as long as the processor architecture is the same. You can just copy over the entire partition (or re-use the disk).

Here is a guide for the Ubuntu installer: http://askubuntu.com/questions/343268/how-to-use-manual-partitioning-during-installation/343370#343370
step 6(the separate home partition) in the guide is optional

No, it's a rebranded Microsoft Windows 3.11, made by Jacob Appelbaum.

I need a good movie editor. Openshot good?
>>
>>57384670
That was a serious question by the way. What are the advantages of using this distrobution?
>>
>>57384710
I haven't tried out Openshot.
But KDEnlive is nice, also libre.
KDEnlive did everything I wanted it to. With a more-or-less relative ease.

FreeBSD is based on the original BSD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution) it has nothing to do with Linux.
>>
>>57384789
I see. So is this distrobution of the BSD kernel (I presume) any good?

So trying to dual boot Kubuntu with Windows 10.
I shrunk the windows 10 partition but the Kubuntu installer says that I need a Root File System on the unallocated space.

This is a screenshot from GParted, and it says that I need to create a new extended partition. Does anyone know how I can do it?

Nice, looks exactly what I was looking for.

FreeBSD is the most popular of the BSDs and it's generally regarded as a good OS although it's used mainly for servers.
>>
>>57384844
But Linux distrobutions are mostly used for servers as well. What are the main differences between them if you don't consider the server side of things?
>>
>>57384857
Most Linux distributions aren't made for servers, they focus on the desktop and try to be easy to use. FreeBSD doesn't focus on anything, it's supposed to be a general purpose OS (like Debian) so it won't be as easy to use as Ubuntu for example.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

That's not a really big issue for me. I can adapt pretty fast. So does it have any good and unique features if compared to Linux distrobutions?
>>57384952
>>57384971
piss off
it's called Linux. period
>>
>>57384952
Why did you change the labels? Linux is actually supposed to be the bigger once since GNU is entirely optional. I for one don't utilize GNU in my Linux system so calling it anything but Linux would be ridiculous

The BSDs have some neat features but for the desktop I don't think there are many advantages in comparison to Linux.

either because they like it or because they think they are cool for using it. I prefer the first type.

Linux is just one kernel of the GNU system, developed 10 years before Linux. What people use today is a combination of the GNU system and the kernel Linux.

Or is there a better method.

What people? I don't use that and referring to my installation of Linux as GNU/Linux is retarded. Which is what you did in post number 57384952. You can use your GNU shit all you want, but don't assume all people make shitty choices like you.
>>
>>57385116
No, most people linux because it happens to ship with their operating system of choice.
