Does changing the earpads on a MDR 7506 change the sound in anyway?? Does it make it better or worse? I've been thinking of getting velour pads.
>>
>>57359209
Changing pads will change the sound but, it's hard to say how or how much. Worse seal might be an issue with velours resulting into a little less bass. Whether you prefer this is up to you.
>>
>>57358944
DT770 then, getting those and a Zalman mic.
>>
>>57359457
I hope that you enjoy treble peaks.
>>
How bad is it if your amp pops when you turn it on. I have a Schitt Magni 2U. The manual says that it should take about 8 seconds for the amp to start after turning it on, but it starts instantly and there is a pretty loud pop.
>>
>>57359220
Do you know of any good earpads for the 7506s?
Hopefully ones that'll enhance low-end frequencies a little bit?
>>
>>57359756
You can't increase low frequency amplitude with earpads if the ones on the headphones now seal perfectly. You'll have to use equalization to do that. I don't have experience with aftermarket pads for those headphones so I can't be of much help there.

>>57359658
Probably not bad but in most decent amplifiers you have a relay that switches the output on after a small delay. 8 seconds is on the longer side this. Sounds like the relay might be broken on yours. Send Schiit mail/support ticket or however their customer service works to ask more about it.

If you want to be extra careful with your headphones during the amplifier's ON/OFF cycle, plug the headphones in only after the amplifier has properly turned on and keep the volume pot turned all the way down when you do so. Unplug the headphones from the amplifier before turning it off. A decent headphone amplifier has protective circuitry and a relay to make this pointless but cheap ones might not and in some cases the voltage peak could be harmful or at the very least uncomfortable.
>>
>>57359658
No wonder that it's called Schiit.
My cheap Fiio E10K doesn't have this issue.

I filled out a support request with Schitt.
I bought it around the time the model came out, so I think that it may be a q/a issue. Fortunately I still have a little over a month on my warranty. I should have done this sooner, but I thought that the popping was normal. I read a review of the product recently and it specifically metioned that there was no popping when turning it on or off, so that is what set this off. Also I am planning on buying some better headphones, so I would not want to damage them.

relay switch makes an audible click but it's quite different from the pop or thump that is heard when you turn on amplifiers with headphones attached. underage what?
>>
>>57365480
That thump is the power rushing forward in laymen terms.

The Magni has a relay switch that make an audible pop.

If any of you kids actually rtfm you'd see it's mentioned there.

e10k, no competition. The nobsound isn't even a dac, just an amp.

>>57365492
If a very clear pop is heard after the relay switch happens, it's pretty poor design which could've been suppressed with a flyback diode depending on where the pop originates in the amplifier. Anon said his Magni turned on immediately and makes a pop when it does while the relay should delay the turn on process close to 10 seconds. Definitely not normal operation. Read the posts next time?

A relay is going to make a pop regardless.

All the relay does is prevent the power to the headphones. Look at the circuit. The amp itself is on once you flip the switch.

What kind of noise is there at work? You could consider the Bose QC35 with active noise cancellation if the noise is constant background hum such as loud AC or engines. If not, DT770 is quite solid choice.
#2
Depends on what you want and how did you like the ones you had. Focus on that first, not budget.

>>57364323
Active nose cancellation doesn't work too well against abrupt noises and higher frequencies. Speech isn't blocked out very effectively by the active circuitry, passive isolation is the better option here. MSR7 would be a good option. Comfort is subjective so better try them out or buy with a possibility to return.

>>57364847
What about those MDR 7506s?

>>57366710
Probably your best option there already. Quality mics are not exactly a thing in these price points and many people here likely don't know a thing about the mic quality in in-ears.

Pls advice

I own hd600 and my laptop is my source of music(mostly rock and metal), it does not provide enough power (not enough bass). I bought shitty fiio e6 and it somewhat works but the battery discharges in 10 minutes and if I keep it plugged in while in use I can hear static.

Is schiit an ok option? I am a poorfag and cant really afford 500$ amps.

So far my favorite option is the beyerdynamic DT 770's 80 ohm, but I'm only concerned how they'll sound with less bass-y music and how they'll sound without an amp

i assume you're using the velour pads that came with your superlux
since the stock 'vaguely leather material' is shithouse

if the 681 EVO didnt make a seal, none of the larger superlux will
unless you buy good earpads
Its the same issue with AKG headphones for some people, though mitigated a fair bit because AKG uses good pads

find headphones with an 'egg' style cup shape and good pads

more lush and squishy pads would do a lot better with glasses, since they'll mould around the glasses and get a good seal
a good example are HM5 pads, especially the sheepskins
though they cost the same as an entire superlux headphone

if you cant spend much more than a superlux, look into second hand headphones.
>>
>>57372171
have you tried it with multiple headphones/outputs?
if so and it still feels unbalanced, then your source is probably fucked

so yeah, you would need a DAC
and maybe an amp, though cheaper DAC/Amp combos are your best bet anyway

just grab a Fiio e10k or an SMSL m3
or a Micca Origen+ if you can spend a bit much
>>
>>57372860
If you want a slightly more coloured and less clear version of your HD800s, sure. they'd probably be a fairly decent middleground between your 800s and k7xx
>>
>>57374228
if you love planar bass, don't do it
the he400i doesnt compare, and the he400s is only moderately comparable with nice sealing pads

their main advantage is the weight, build and better cables
imho they dont live up to that sweet deep darkness that he-400's are known for
>>
>>57376015
yeah, the schiit is a very good option
alternative is an o2 amp

even more so if you get the DIY o2 amp
if you know how to solder, then you've got a great amp for $50 USD
though it needs a housing, which can be had for like 20, or go cheapo mode and get a tupperware container and line it with aluminium foil
>>
>>57376462
770's are a good option
though m40x with HM5 pads will be comparable
build quality wont be as good, but removable cable and a bit more tame bass
soundstage will be better with the pads too
you can even do mods to make it open back and have really quite impressive soundstage

I just bought the HD 598s, up from my g930 wireless. So far they sound pretty good with music. I usually listen to my music at lower levels and it seems with these I can't do that (I'm assuming because they're open back). One thing that I've noticed is that voip programs like Discord and TS even with higher bitrates really suck. Like they sound terrible compared to my old headset. Is this just the way it is? I know it'll probably be the "the voip program sucks that's why" deal, but I'm just curious.

I have it plugged into the back of my motherboard using the Realtek ALC892 Audio Codec if that helps.

Haven't played many games with them yet, but the ones I have still kinda feel muddled. I guess fuzzy would be a good word? I don't know it's really hard to describe. I want to say it sound lower quality. Like it doesn't have that crispness to it like the g930s did.

Music at low to mid range settings sound pretty good. At least equal or better depending on the song.

So my question is, would a amp or dac help at all with these issues?
>>
>>57380156
The ALC892 has a headphone amp, but sadly it's only accessible via the front panel connector.
>>
>>57380156
>I usually listen to my music at lower levels and it seems with these I can't do that
what do you mean lower levels?
as in lower volume percieved, or lower on your volume setting/knob?
if you have even a slightly noisy environment you'll have to turn it up higher to drown out background noise

if you mean volume on your setting/knob then that is probably normal. HD 598's may just be harder to drive than your old headphones.

>One thing that I've noticed is that voip programs like Discord and TS even with higher bitrates really suck
chances are theyre just bringing out the poor quality in the audio that you weren't hearing before

>Haven't played many games with them yet, but the ones I have still kinda feel muddled. I guess fuzzy would be a good word? I don't know it's really hard to describe. I want to say it sound lower quality. Like it doesn't have that crispness to it like the g930s did.
should be the opposite
598's have amazing highs and mids, and the low end although tame, is very controlled

>So my question is, would a amp or dac help at all with these issues?
possibly. HD 558's and 598's have some issues with impedance
some people have reported that Fiio e10k's suck with HD 598's so watch out for that. I have no idea if its true though.

Yeah I think my friends just have really shitty headset mics. I have a snowball and I listened to myself on discord and I sound fine.

Hm. That might be a problem. Currently testing it out and I do notice at least a volume difference and slightly better sound quality. Problem is I had to re-adjust where the wire goes and it's not in a very comfortable position. Guess we'll see how it works out.

If I'm hearing a difference that means the I'm hearing the difference in the amp I'd assume.

So /g/ I don't come here often because I just don't but I've run into a dilemma in my search for the perfect headset. Part of the problem is I'm not sure how to word my question to Google (the questions and festures i look for throw me headfirst into an abyss of bullshit thatican'tbreak the surface of)and the other part of the problem stems from the fact that I haven't asked anyone because I figured eventually I'd figure out what I wad trying to find anyways. I don't even know if the headset I'm looking for exists. My cousin got a pretty decent Afterglow 5.1 wireless headset that I liked but i have questions he didn't have answers to. This is where I come to you and finally admit defeat. I am looking for a wireless headset with 7.1 surround sound that I might also be able to connect via bluetooth to my tablet or smartphone. It doesn't necessarily have to be 7.1 but I won't go under 5.1 and I have high hopes for 7.1. I was fucking around on pc part picker and found these Creative Labs EVO wireless 7.1 headset but the lack of a visible mic somehow makes me shy away because I'd like to have a crisp voice on the mic for clear, easy to understand communication. I do a lot of communication intensive activities in my mmo and I don't want to sound muddy, faint, muffled, or hard to understand.

Picture is related EVO 1

Thanks in advance if I actually can get some answers.

>>57380602
Stop worrying about an arbitrary amount of "channels" in your headphones. It's nothing more than marketing jargon. Headphones are stereo devices, they have left and right channels or "2.0" in loudspeaker terminology. With these two channels and proper processing you can simulate surround sound better than any loudspeaker setup ever could(5.1, 7.2, Atmos whatever) but this is done in software, not by the headphone drivers themselves. If those Sound Blaster headphones are anything like these...

http://en.goldenears.net/49018

You best forget them.

Mic quality is not dictated by the position too much. It's good if the mic isn't right in front of your mouth. You should try and search for mic quality samples online, some reviewers on Youtube do it(well Hardwarecanucks at least).

I hadn't realized I wad asking too much, I just figured that enough advances had been made that it existed.
>>
>>57380602
5.1/7.1 is pure marketing bullshit
you will never have 5/7 speakers and a subwoofer in headphones
its stupid and doesnt exist

its shitty marketing for virtual surround sound. which you can achieve simply with a 10 dollar USB dongle.

headsets are trash btw. only one worth purchasing is the hyper X cloud core
>>
>>57380854
Honestly I think those might be the exact ones. I'm also not exactly hip to all of what those graphics were showing me though but some of it didn't look good. Also, explain when you say channels are a marketing ploy. I thought that actually had to do with the different amount of speakers and positron to give true depth of sound. I'm not exactly savvy to virtual surround sound is though I have a feeling that actual surround sound is surround sound because of the placement of the speakers. I actively avoided coming and asking these types of questions to avoid being insulted and belittled like >>57380791 did because of a lap of knowledge or understanding. I don't have thin skin but unless you are going to help me understand after laughing at me then please refrain.
>>
>>57380874
Yeah, I saw that in one of my forays into Google. Thing is, I'm not stressing the fact that it's going to be virtual surround so much as I just want it. I'd also like to be able to get up from my computer, grab my stuff and leave with only a second to sync my headset. I hate all the fucking cords and want to dispense with that as well. I do have practical reasons for why I am looking for a decent pair.
>>
>>57380938
While I'm not here to explain everything to everyone asking, I'm also not an insufferable cunt who opposes to teaching things and making people learn/understand some basics.

Those graphs on Goldenears are showing the frequency response of the headphones. Very basic measurement for all audio gear and arguably the most important in judging how something sounds like. Simplifying a lot, the flatter the curve the better. The rest of the plots are not important. For reference, here is a headphone that has relatively linear response on the Goldenears' target:

http://en.goldenears.net/17992

Channels are not marketing ploy per se, but surround loudspeaker setup terminology doesn't apply to headphones. In loudspeakers you have a room, a listening position and an array of loudspeakers arranged at a proper angle and distance from you. If done right, the effect in the relatively narrow sweet spot is surround sound IF the content played back through them is mixed for the loudspeaker setup in use. In loudspeakers the channels mix together in the air and enter both of your ears.

In headphones, you don't use multiple drivers to create surround sound. It would be near impossible to do in such a small space and only complicates things. In headphones you bake the head related transfer function, reverb and other effects into the signal in software and then play it back. Only two channels are used to play back an altered signal.

The benefit of surround processing is mostly immersion. It doesn't really make sounds easier to localize as most content isn't mixed properly to use headphones.

Put on your headphones and listen to binaural content like virtual barber shop. Your headphones are perfectly capable of creating a very convincing surround sound experience as long as the content is mixed accordingly. The effect is more accurate than surround loudspeaker setups do. It is a thing to downmix and process surround sound to headphones. I've never heard it done well though.

I never owned anything like the HD800S before but I'm in the market for something that's better than the hd650. Would something like the HD800s make poor recording like from youtube sound horrible? Mainly concerned about music from electronic music genres that are recorded really loud..

>>
>>57387219
250 or 32, I'd get 250 if that's the only device you are going to be using it with.
>>
>>57388157
HD800S is a side-grade, don't let the shills fool you, I'd even argue that it's inferior to the HD650 based on its frequency response.
>>
>>57388157
>something that's better than the hd650
Might not be HD 800S then, it's different from HD 650 and while it does some things better than it, sound wise it might be worse.
>Would something like the HD800s make poor recording like from youtube sound horrible?
No, headphones don't do that. Compression artifacts or mastering practices are separate from headphone response. If there is a problem, you'd hear it already just as well on the HD 650.
>>
>>57388599
>>57388556
What's better then? I've heard some reviewers say the Focal ELear is like the hd650 but others say no.

>No, headphones don't do that. Compression artifacts or mastering practices are separate from headphone response. If there is a problem, you'd hear it already just as well on the HD 650.

Cheapo gaymen headphones most everything sounds equal quality. But with more expensive headphones I can tell the track on youtube was uploaded horribly since it sounds worse compared to something from like soundcloud. Would the jump not be the same from HD650 to HD800s or is it just hitting diminishing returns

From the past year of auditioning, I have had a preference for brighter headphones but have never bought a new pair. With the coming of the HD6XX, which is a HD650, I'm seriosuly considering getting it. However, since I like brighter headphones, is this a bad idea?
Just for reference, I preferred the HD600 over K702 and DT880. Also the HD800 over Ether and LCD2/3/4.

>>
>>57388696
>What's better then?
Subjective. I'd say HD 650 tops new Focals easily. Both have a warm tilted response.

>Cheapo gaymen headphones most everything sounds equal quality
If your headphones are downright terrible in terms of bandwidth, distortion or extremely colored, certain parts of the response can be masked out or be very hard to hear. This is mostly in the frequency response and it's unrelated to market status or price. If you are lucky headphone coloration might mask areas where compression artifacts are more likely to be present/audible. If you are not, a colored headphone might make it easier to spot poor encodes. I had laptop once which made the task of spotting certain mp3 artifacts pretty easy because the response of those garbage speakers integrated in it covered a very narrow bandwidth, including parts where the encoder was doing poorly.

>YouTube worse than Soundcloud
YouTube's compression exceeds SoundCloud's in terms of quality(128 kbps mp3 on SoundCloud vs 160 kbps Opus on YouTube). This is more of a problem with the quality of the source file uploaded and the fact that YouTube automatically lowers playback volume which often results into perceptually worse quality sound.

>Would the jump not be the same from HD650 to HD800s
Point is, it might not be a jump up at all. I own both of those headphones. I prefer sound of HD 650 but I only use the HD 800 because I happen to use parametric equalizer on literally everything and it makes the stock response a trivial matter.

>diminishing returns
You hit that point when you got the HD 650s already.

Here's where I'm coming from. I currently have the HE400S. I love the sound, the signature is close to what I want. I listen to a lot of vocal oriented music so imaging and separation is key to me without artificial treble. Bass extension is nice but I want a neutral amount in quality. I've been looking at LCD2's, STAX, and that's about it. Not sure what's out there that fits what I want. Definitely want open and under 1000USD. Main downside to the LCD2's is comfort and downside to the STAX is availability and the price has shot up recently.

>>57389587

>>
>>57389623
No, I'm saying that the transducer is the part of your audio chain that has the most effect. Plugging in a pair of porta-pros into a mjolnir2 isn't going to turn the them into much better headphones.
>>
>>57389606
You can get the SRS-3100 system from stax-usa for $790. If you don't mind used you can get a lambda + amp for considerably less if you hunt around ebay, head-fi classifieds, and yahoo.jp auctions.
>>
>>57389670
Looks good. As far as dynamics and other common headphones go where do these sit for performance? I'm looking to buy end game and be done.
>>
>>57389686
A good lambda system will out-perform most anything out there imo.
>>
>>57389645
Who knew? Doesn't matter what headphones you plug into Mjolnir 2 they aren't going to be transformed into anything. They'll sound exactly the same there compared to every other semi-competent amplifier capable of driving them. Same applies to every headphone. Amplification is simple. Linear response, enough power, low enough noise and distortion to be inaudible and that's it. Also near zero output impedance to avoid uneven voltage division on the models which have an impedance swing(s).

>>57389686
Audition them first. Stax coloration isn't for everyone and most Stax sound very similar. LCD2s are very different. Maybe find out what you actually like before choosing between random options in the "high end".

I'm in a bit of a pickle /g/. A short while ago I bought Bose QC35. I fell in love with the comfort and the sound quality, plus it was wireless! I was under the impression I was able to use the microphone while playing games, which does not seem to be the case, now I am considering my options:

1: Return them and get either a Kingston HyperX Cloud II or a Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum Wireless. The former being better, I think, but the latter being wireless.
2: Return it and buy a different headphone for gaming and a seperate microphone for better quality on both in comparison to option 1.
3: Keep it and buy a microphone.

I play games a lot and listen to music simultaneously, so I kinda want a good quality for both of these services. Am I falling into a gaming headset meme or not?

then why do they sell for cheaper than the hd600 everywhere?

That's totally my intention, but I haven't had the experience of hot glue lasting. Hell, the factory new connection didn't last.

sennheiser have been jewing audiophiles for decades. they didn't suddenly grow a conscience.

Could use some superglue. Hotglue is often just easier cause its typically less runny

Because hd600 is more neutral and everyone has one. And it's older than the hd650. hd6xx appeals to people who alrerady owns a hd600.

sennheiser momentum on ear, senfer UE, dzat df10, various gaymur headsets.

My senfer UE died in one ear, and I can't use them anymore, so I want a pair of iems to replace them, that will (hopefully) last a long time.

Where did you buy them from, and how long ago/ the repair job shouldn't be too difficult to do, though if you're not doing it yourself, expect to pay anywhere between $10-50, depending on where you take them.
