I have YST-FSW100 subwoofer, pic related.

Can I just hook it up to the amplifier's recorder out?

Small question for you mates.

As people who spend hundreds of dollars on quality headphones, do you wear the same in public or opt in for cheap, low quality IEMs instead?

That happens to me all the time. If you didn't have those before now, you have a gift. I've been told that the ringing is a cluster of nerves in your ear dying or something. You've got plenty left though.
>>
>>57333997
>>57334029
Nevermind, I was lied to.

>When the outer hair cells put energy back into the vibration, it’s called positive feedback or “saturation feedback”. The process is meant to amplify very quiet sounds more so than loud ones. Most of the time, it works great and you go on with your life, not noticing anything out of the ordinary. However, biological systems aren’t always flawless. Occasionally, the amplification level of one or more outer hair cells will go awry and as a result, the whole system will erupt into spontaneous oscillation.

It's not harmful.
>>
>>57334051

Okay, I think i'm going mad here.
Been switching from 32bit 44.1 to 192khz for 20 minutes through direct sound of windows10
wasapi another story, why does "push" sound better than "event"?

so 192 defiantly sounds better than 44.1 high and mids are the same but bass is muddy at 44.1
why? can anyone try and tell me i'm not mad?

Testing on hd600s.
>>
>>57334090
closed headphones?

I never used closed.
And my hearing got better, seriously some magic - I can hear what happens in the kitchen 10m away now with headphones on at moderate volume. Couldn't before.
>>
>>57333668
Some bad implementations of it yes. If it works correctly, it just adjusts average volume of the tracks played and doesn't adjut volume within the track.

>>57334587
Sampling rates of 44.1 KHz and above won't have an effect on sound on itself, especially not on the low frequencies. Something else is going on assuming this isn't just your head playing trickery with you. Headphones you use are irrelevant as should be the API(unless there's a bug of some sort).

I once used the Astro MixAmp which was hooked up to my PC using optical SPDIF. I could feed it with different sample rates and the sound would be drastically altered depending on the setting that was used. It was almost like switching between different EQ presets in media players. I never understoond what caused it.

>>
>>57334587

direct sound is software mixing (fucking with the sound so you can run you bluetooth headset between browser and games seamlessly)

wasapi is bit for bit perfect audio meaning you are tied to that aplication (superior)

anything else you here is related to dithering (how things are resampled between bitrates)

when you chuck all 3 in you will get confused....

tldr source is everthing

get back to the purest sorce

>>
Do you guys use any bars visualizer while listening to music? Do you think that watching a visualizer while listening to music is a safe, reliable way to check how close the headphone is to the source?
>>
>>57335821
How would that work?
>>
>>57335964
Consider the height of the bars and try to figure out whether your heapdhones reproduce the different frequencies at the expected volume. Of course it's not an accurate way to measure the heaodhone's frequency response, but at least you can see which frequencies are louder compared to what the visualizer shows.
>>
>>57335821
You can't possibly hope to do analysis in real time with graphic visualizations while using music which is extremely an complex and wide bandwidth waveform. I use one but only for interest. Your best way to analyze the headphone's neutrality is to listen to a logarithmic sine sweep through the audible frequency range(roughly 20-20 000 Hz) of frequencies and spot any difference in volume while the pitch goes up(peaks or dips of louder or quieter sound).
>>
>>57335994
> logarithmic sine sweep
Where do I find one? I know that audiocheck.com has some files to test headphone, but they din't have a complete file sweep. I need something to indicate the exact frequency while it's rising.
>>
>>57335984
That's like doing monitor color calibration by comparing it to a shitty printout of a color table.
>>
>>57327741
well, you could. but you really shouldn't. line out is just an analog output of the audio, the output of the amp can be to loud and blow the circuit..
if you don't turn it up to 11 you'll be fine though
>>
>>57336013
You could build it in parts from audiocheck, preferably a sweep that is slow enough for easily find out what is going on in the higher frequency range. Sinegen is a program which lets you adjust a sine tone frequency by yourself. Not sure where you can create a sine sweep without paying. Some DAW programs probably let you if you know how but I can't be of help here.

>>57327741
You can but your subwoofer's volume wont be adjusted while you turn the amplifier's volume knob to adjust the loudspeakers. If you do this connection, remember to use very low volume on the sub as full line level signal is going to get amplified by an extreme amount on the sub's end. I accidentally hooked my sub such a way once. Didn't break anything but fuck me was it loud. Sub is rated at 111 dB max but that was way louder and distorted.
>>
>>57336096
What about this log sine sweep here?
http://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_sinesweep20-20k.php
>>
>>57336305
That 20 second sweep is good.
>>
>>57336322
Unfortunately there's no way I can tell which frequency is being played though. Are there free and reliable spectrum visualizers that tell the exact frequency played?
>>
>>57336358
Oscilloscope

Honestly though this is why Sinegen is useful. You know exactly what frequency is being played when you adjust the slider.

Is Etymotic ER-4 the most balanced sounding audio product in production today?
>>

Were you successful in doing it? I'm having troubles with making it play in exclusive mode. Because the crackle and pops. I'm using the latest mpchc nightly and both latest lav filter + madvr.

Another person is having trouble with it here https://trac.mpc-hc.org/ticket/5855

How to change buffer for mpchc?
>>
>>57336691
Certainly has the most neutral response and best accuracy on the diffuse field without the aid of equalization. To me that means a very balanced sound but "balanced" is still somewhat subjective. The ER-4B, S/SR, PT and XR are all slightly different but the tonality is close to one another. IMO the best sounding headphones/in-ears on the market at any price.

>>
>>57336912

I tried some Bose in a department store and I liked how it sounded. However I don't need wireless function. I also consider getting a Panasonic model.
>>
>>57336482
I think they could use a boost in the bass so theres more impact, cause they sound flat as hell, in a bad way. maybe its cause my pads are shot.
>>

Some distortion however with lower frequencies

You can do that but the tape output won't be adjusted by the amp's volume control (as well as other things like tone controls). In practice this would make it extremely cumbersome unless you plan to set the sub and amp volume to some fixed level and never touch them again. Depending on what your source is, you could do that and adjust volume on the source itself.

If you try it out make sure you start with the sub's gain/volume set all the way down if you're actually going to feed it 2Vrms line level signal, it will likely be loud as all fuck otherwise.
>>
>>57327833
I've got HD650 at home, never take them out. They'd be way too cumbersome and I don't really listen to music outside. If I really want to I've got some JBL BT earphones I got as a Christmas gift last year. They obviously don't sound great at all, but they're fine for how little

I listen to while on the go.

Yes, almost every single sound card ever made has a mic input. You'd have to look hard for one without a mic input and get into "audiophile" territory.

Yep. Line in/out and microphone dont work. I've tried front panel and and back. Niether will recognise my desk mic nor my Samson SR950's. I've reinstalled Windows and that didn't solve it.

about DAC, depends, if you are going from motherboard line out to magni may workout fine
but if you feel like they sound muddy or not detailed- you need to get a dac
because they are detailed and not veiled at all, bass should be clean and not overshadowing
600s have more bass but not by much, it's cleaner than 598

FR and harmonic distortion at 500 Hz sine wave.

>>57350709
>being more accurate
On this target, on this measurement coupler, on these units. Honestly nothing too important and everything in these graphs falls in within normal production variance.

The THD against a single sine wave is a useless measurement. A single sine tone is terribly limited and THD even with full spectrum sweep and harmonics added is hard to tie in into audibility. While added distortion is never a good thing, these graphs are far too limited in scope to draw any conclusions from. Besides thats about 2 dB difference between the two in second and third harmonic, both well under 60 dB below fundamental. It's excellent performance.

again, compared to 598s and 90% of people reviewing/having 600s agree on that

>More bass is never cleaner than less bass
splitting hairs, that's what 600s are for that's what they do - you hear more lower frequencies but not IN YOUR FACE, depends on music more than headphones I guess
from what I listened last week bass is better on 600 than 598s/558s

my headphones are too low impedance for my amp. the knob is only at 7-8 oclock and it's fucking loud, if I make it lower there is channel imbalance. I'm using equalizer apo to limit the gain, does this reduce the "bit depth" and cucking my sound quality?
>>
>>57352039
Do you need an audio card for this or some software?
>>
>>57352288
>my headphones are too low impedance for my amp
No they are not. Your problem is excessive amplifier gain and/or too high sensitivity headphones for this amplifier. It's not related to impedance.

Too low of an impedance causes amplifiers to fry because of high power draw. It's a real problem with loudspeakers to have too low impedance load for the amplifier but not so much for headphones currently on the market.
>does this reduce the "bit depth"
Yes.
>cucking my sound quality?
You'll slowly creep up the noise floor because of quantization error but the quantization noise is so low even at 16 bits of precision that you shouldn't have to worry about lowering digital gain to counter pot channel balance. It's likely that even after lowering digital volume, your amplifier and the recording equipment used in the music production has orders of magnitude higher noise floor than what quantization causes and it'll be completely masked by the noise present in the system already. So really, don't worry about it when you have a clear audible problem with the volume pot.

Audio will only come out of one ear, but if you orient yourself and the cable a certain way audio will come out both. I tried cutting a section of cable that looked damaged, soldered the wires and wrapped them and it fixed it for a little while.

I used my Sony MDR-10RCs on a Dolby SS 3.0 (or whatever) laptop and I enjoyed them. They had high def clarity to my ears and a nicely warm sound sig. Then the laptop broke. Fast forward a year and I have a new, cheap laptop with Arch Linux (instead of Debian), recently bought a SMSL DAC/amp and expected the headphones to sound the same. But music sounds shit. Really low quality (like I spent £6 on iPhone earphones) & kind of "faint" as in not whole or present enough. Everything is grossly distorted. Vocals/instruments are thin, tinny, sibilant and spiky, so I can't manage to listen for long and I definitely don't enjoy it when I do. Sounds like something is wrong with my computer/software, I don't know what, or maybe even the headphones (but I don't know what headphone damage sounds like). Can speakers fry?

Could it be anything other than the headphones? My ALSA config? The SMSL defaulted to 96 kHz and wouldn't give me sound until I set DAC as default in ~/.asoundrc. The SMSL is on IN1 (connected by USB 3.0) and 48 kHz. I don't know if this is normal but alsamixer has no effect on its volume or sound. Does anyone know what I should do?

My Creative Aurvana Live 2 (black) just arrived in the mail I got for $45 refurbished. This is the first time I spent over $20 on headphones and I can definitely hear some parts of songs that I couldn't hear before.

I'm amazed. I didn't even know having the cord being a separate thing was a thing. Hopefully if I unplug and sit the cord somewhere every night it will last a long time before shorting out. My last headset was TekNmotion TM-YW100A and that lasted 2 years 6 months of daily use before it shorted out on me last week.

in case i ever get the urge to do something silly like buy balanced headphones or rewire & solder ones i already own
ideally i'd just like something with usb & optical in maybe a selector switch and 6.3mm out with a nice knob. but all the cheaper units i've found usually fall through on one of these

>You guys think I need a DAC?
'Need'? No, probably not, just listen to them from your current source and decide. I've got a Xonar DX from years ago and a MF V-DAC II, they sound very, very similar. On HD650 I can't really tell much of a difference, it's very subtle, but on my speakers the DX has noticeably boomier upper-bass and makes some songs definitely sound worse than the DAC. I prefer using the DAC for stereo music, but IIRC I spent $250 on the thing and if I hadn't heard it I probably couldn't tell there was something 'wrong' with the way the DX sounds. I don't regret buying it since its S/PDIF inputs are also useful to me, but I'd hardly call it a worthy upgrade for the money.

No and headphone "soundstage" is not requirement in any way to create perfect surround virtualization.

>>57355559
Yes it is by definition a terrible question which is starting to trigger me as /g/ is filled with people asking that. The worth of something is as subjective as it gets and you are asking people who you don't know a simple yes or no answer for that.

>>
>>57355672
For software, Razer Surround comes to mind. I'm not up to date on what is being done in sound cards right now. Sennheiser is making some digital processor aimed for "gamers" which I expect to be good but have nothing to back this up. Many Dolby processors I've tried have been awful echo chambers.

>>57355603
The ER-4SR is sound wise identical to the ER-4S. The new XR is basically SR with bass boost which results into a little warmer sound signature. ER-4PT is like the S but with more rolled off upper mid and treble region making it slightly more dark sounding. ER-4B is like S but with boost in regions where PT rolls off. They are all very close to one another sound wise. ER-4PT comes with an impedance adapter in the box to convert its response to ER-4S which is what anon >>57355680 mentioned. ER-4S and B are very insensitive in-ears whereas the PT is very sensitive. The new models, XR and SR, are somewhere in-between in terms of sensitivity with much better build quality thanks to the metal housing and nicer cables.

So I recently got Dennheiser 600 HD and really like them, however there was this 'dampening bass' overlay that annoyed the shit out of me. After some time I noticed that there is a foam over a speaker, removed it and everything sounds clearer, maybe 'unrefined' but crispier. Why it was even there?
>>
>>57355884
To tune the sound and to protect the driver housing from hairs/dust. You can tune the response with an equalizer more effectively.

The simpler solution is to get a headphone with a removable cable. Wireless headphones have a lot more going on and a lot more that can fail or simply be shit quality, including the battery.
