I'm about to start learning Python with the online tutorial just to be able to do basic homework stuff. I use Debian with Python 2.7, What additional stuff can you recommend me to use? I want to use autofs for automounting.
I already managed that my drives do get mounted automatically when inserted.
My only problem is that it mounts it to /run, even though I wrote
/media/$USER/ /etc/autofs/auto.removable
into the autofs.master file.
auto.removable only contains the key names, -fstype=auto,rw,user and the UUID.
Is / automatically /run for autofs?
Or did I forget to configure something?
I've already looked at autofs(5) and auto.master(5) and nothing mentions even that everything gets mounted to /run.
It's only for autistic reasons that it shouldn't be mounted to /run.

I am installing gentoo but I am a noob when it comes to network.

Just to confirm,

ifconfig gives me

While following https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:X86/Installation/System

should I just type enp0s25 whenever the guide mention eth0 ?

Both when editing /etc/conf.d/net and when using rc-update to automatically start the network?

I never need to search multiple man pages in one command line. Thus if I give a second argument to man, I'd like it to search the content of the man page for the first arg for the description of the second arg.
man man -k

Judging from your comment, I assume that you're confused about a few things and are trying to fix things which don't need to be fixed.
Assuming that you're using the latest, regular Firefox. compiled with GTK3 support (not GTK2) and the latest default GTK3 theme, Adwaita, you shouldn't be having any problems.

How do you expect Firefox to enable Qt if it doesn't have it implemented?
USE flags aren't magical things. They just enable features if said feature is available.
If it's not, it ignores it.
equery uses www-client/firefox
.
Run that through your terminal and see that Qt isn't listed.

You should write an article about your important discovery. Adding an use flag will automatically write a GUI for a program using that toolkit. No need to actually write anything, wasting useless lines of code and manpower. All we have to do is declare a USE flag inside Gentoo. It will do the rest.

theres no option to build it with qt support because firefox doesn't use qt.
theres no global or local qt flag for firefox.

Trying to extend the idle timeout for sshd. We have software that takes forever to install (SAS) and the ssh connections are timing out before it's complete. I've set the following in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

ClientAliveInterval 600

What discovery? I already have Qt enabled and installed on my system. What's left is enabling it in Firefox. We use USE flags to compile it with certain settings in this distro.

There is a global Qt flag in gentoo. You put 'qt' in your /etc/portage/make.conf and all GUI programs are compiled with Qt support.

@57354206
Seriously. Stop using Gentoo if you don't know how software compiling works.
Because you show clear as day that you don't.
Not every software has Qt integrated. No matter how much you want it to.
Firefox is one of those.
If you want to discuss it further, compile Firefox with ncurses and show your screenshot of its interface.
And if it's not an ncurses interface, stop posting in this thread unless you have a real problem.

Yes. I understand that Qt is not integrated into Firefox. That is why I want to compile Qt capabilities into Firefox by setting a global qt USE flag in my make.conf.

Firefox is a GUI app so I'm not sure that would work with it. And I don't want to waste my time on compiling something I will never use.

The people who ask such questions don't use 5% of Bash's capabilities. Using zsh "powerful features" means shit to them. They think that you need to get a new shell to change the prompt.

Troubleshooting steps:

What about curl?
Is there any output at all? Define "hanging".
Are you seeing this happen only for certain hosts?
does the problem happen if you use direct IP and not DNS name?
Did you update any network settings (either on your computer, or router) or drivers recently?
>>

Does bash have autocompletion that disappears once you're done completing?
For example in zsh I can do
cat <TAB>

a list of directories/files will show up, and if I press do<TAB> the previous list will disappear and be replaced with all the directories/files starting with "do".
Last time I used bash, the autocompletion was permanently printed on screen. Is there a way to change this behavior?
Can bash provide fuzzy autocompletion? (eg typing /t/d/f<TAB> autocompletes to /tmp/dir/file)
Also is there a way to have your prompt change color depending on the vi mode you're in? I managed to do that on zsh but I'm not sure I could do that in bash.

Please note I'm not saying that zsh is better than bash, in fact if you tell me these features are available in bash I'll abandon zsh on the spot (it's a bit too bloated for my tastes).

I was considering installing debian on it since I have gained much more experience with linux after dual booting on my main desktop, but I had a few questions about whether or not I should proceed with this.
1. Will debian be significantly lighterweight/faster than lubuntu?
2. Does debian give me the option to install a DE/WM during the installation process, or do I have to set that up later?
3. If the laptop is hooked up to a tv and I want to extend the laptop screen to the tv, can this be done with a simple wm like opebox? Some extra information is that I cannot clone displays because the laptop has a different aspect ratio than the tv, so it makes watching movies look really bad.

vim tells you to do :q when you try ctrl+c, which should be your first guess if you haven't used vi before assuming you're not 2 days into your loonix adventure

and your window manager is responsible for adding the x to the corner you actual retard. do you think every program made for windows programs in the fucking close button?

I'm not the guy you replied to btw he seemed somewhat autistic

Proof that Canonical is hurting the Linux community a lot. People ask:
>Why install Linux of I can have it on Windows with Ubuntu?
>>
For someone about to completely replace his laptop (my only computer atm) with a Linux distro for the first time, what would be a good distro to start?
It's a older computer, a HP shitbox with a Core i3-3227U with 4gb DDR3, and games aren't a concern.
From what I looked up KDE seems to be a more appealing desktop for me.

I know there are thousands of similar questions online but I wanted a more personalized answer.

BTW Ubuntu is hideous.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I would go with the KDE flavors of Mint or Majaro.

Yes, it is simpler. It has a graphical installer.

If you are new, use Ubuntu. If you don't like unity, use Mate or anything else (maybe KDE).
Ubuntu is the defacto babby distro. When you're save enough you can switch to Debian or Arch.

>>57356703
Manjaro is Arch plus even more incompetence. Pic related. Do you think it's a good idea to run a distro made by people who give such advices?
>>
>>57356711
7 is an ironic point because many people like to claim that Debian is somehow largely affected by SJWs.

Every sufficiently large community has extremists, not just Debian's.
>>
>>57356742
Kubuntu is Ubuntu just with KDE right?
>>
>>57356712
ignore 99% of what those autists just told you.
Calling manjaro arch is like saying Mint is Debian, which is completely wrong. Also, in most cases, the more forked version of an os you use the worse it is (unless it's made for a very specific niche).
For this reason, I would recommend you to try Xubuntu as your first distro. It is a lighterweight version of ubuntu unity, and also just werks out of the box.
After you've spent time becoming familiar with how to use linux as a regular user, then you can install debian. If you are feeling a bit ambitious and you are really interested in learning about linux, you could even go with debian as your first distro.
Just be aware that upon installation you will have to spend much more time downloading/installing packages, and setting up different programs than you would have if you had simply stuck with a *buntu.
>>
>>57356732
distros dont work like windows
what you see with windows is what you get, no changing unless you use some super shady shit
if you dont like how ubuntu looks, you can easily change the DE, apply some themes, change icons, etc to your liking

I can only recommend ubuntu to beginners until they get this new way of thinking into their brains, after that, they're free to roll with whatever distro and de their hearts desire
>>
>>57356752
Only some retards in this thread claim Debian is SJW as reaction to the BTFO pipermail. Literally nowhere else on the internet you read anything about SJW behavor. The devs maybe just added that harrassment site to silence some annoying gurl (just like mpv removed slave to silence all the "issues").

Debian Stable was a bit too out of date/slow for me. Arch is a bit too fast for me. Should I go back through the pain of installing Gentoo again and use that, or is there something else you dudes would recommend?

Use Debian Sid (upsteam packages just like Arch). You can run apt-listbugs to check if everything is fine and upgrade while feeling save.
